    Looks like mosquito hell. I have the same winch on my JLUR. Love it. On my previous JKUR I had the 9500 XCR which held up fine for over 5 years without issue and used many times. People always want to give a WARNing against SB but they actually make decent products for a lot less than paying for the name of some other stuff.

    another reason to have a mount that you can attach a winch to the rear of the rig. As soon as you said "This looks yucky and I don't know if the trail goes anywhere..." I was thinking...so, you are going to pull yourself a 100 feet at a time, just so you can turn around somewhere and winch yourself back out.....AND you don't know where you are going? Tell me you were once a 2ND LT.

    Thanks for posting this great video! I have a unrelated question: The wires that run from your hood latches to what looks like a lightbar are a great idea (they remind me of the ones I saw on the old WW2 Jeep movies.) Can you please let me know what the lightbar looking thing that says "Lake County Off Roads" is and what those brackets that hold it on are?

    • @TDHobbies
      @TDHobbies  4 роки тому +1

      I will make a little video for you. That light bar looking thing is a light bar, that is it's cover, some states require you have it covered so you are not prone to turn it on and blind oncoming drivers. Light bar is Rough Country PN: RC-70950 $279.99, and the brackets are PN: RC-70504 $63.00, and those cables are called "limb risers" when you go through heavy brush, they push the branches out of the way, or they will guide the branches over the top instead of the branches going along the hood, and then slapping you in the face. I will still make a quick video.

    I see all the comments on the duty cycle..(so I'll be polite here LOL) I have a 88 Dodge Dakota, I weighed it 3611 lbs with me in it. I'm gonna go with the XRC 9500lb series 2 winch ( I believe its the same 6.6hp motor as the x20 you have, in a different "cheaper" body) My point is I'm just wondering how long I should be winching at a time? The truck being an ancient chrysler product runs a 1200CCA AGM style battery. I'm not shy of taking way longer than I need to, if it means the winch will last longer, just curious what people think about that.

    • @TDHobbies
      @TDHobbies  4 роки тому

      I hear many different stories on this. It all depends on the load, each situation you use it will be different. I purposely strained mine to see how it would hold up in this video.Another problem with this winch is, the motor is isolated and you can't feel it if it's getting hot, I have never felt it even get warm and I know I have overloaded it here and there. So fast forward to today, and it seems like the winch isn't working as well as new. It seems to draw more current than it used to, and while winching makes a high and low sound most times. I did check the current draw and it's within specs, unfortunately I didn't check it while it was newer. This winch gets a lot of use, in fact I used it to get over some sand Saturday, and a couple recoveries. (have still pics and dashcam, maybe I should put it on here) Watch other videos and pick the advice that is given the most. Moral of the story, take your time with it especially under heavy load situations, Don't goose the button on and off. If you have a voltmeter in the vehicle watch for voltage drop, the motor can get damaged if the voltage goes too low. Hope this helps some, and have fun out there!

      @@TDHobbies Ah I see what your saying about the temperature in the sealed unit. I do have an extra voltage gauge in the truck I could wire to the winch as well as a amperage gauge. So slow and steady wins the race! Thanks for the quick response and advice, I appreciate it!

    • @TDHobbies
      @TDHobbies  4 роки тому

      gittyupalice96 when I talk about amps, I clamped a meter onto the cable to see the draw, a meter in the dash may not give you the info I’m talking about. Either way, if it drops voltage, your working it too much. You’ll know what I mean when you winch hard, LOL, the overall stress on the rope and frame will scare you to let off. Haha

    Who out there knows how hard winching is on a battery? How long were you winching though the mud? Just wondering if it's better to have 2 battery set up? Thanks - Great video

    • @TDHobbies
      @TDHobbies  4 роки тому

      It's hard on a battery, I have the biggest AGM battery that will fit, I think it's 1,000 CCA, and it's good for long pulls like this under lighter loads, it will pull down voltage on heavy pulls and you have to shut it down and take your time. This was a closed trail due to the mud, so I was not in anyone's way, and every pull is in this video. This mud was really soft, you can see how the axle is plowing, but it's rather soft, and the line is out a little ways too. with that being said, the winch is under less of a load with soft mud, and the farther out the line is, it has more power. You can go to Smittybilt's site and find some information on power and current draw, however actual draw on the battery is not steady. I can tell you that when I preload my line and pull about 1,000 lbs pressure it draws about 95 amps. I measured the amps with a meter, and guessed with the load. If you are pulling heavy loads, I mean like up a very steep hill, or through heavy clay because you are high center, it will pull upwards of 300 amps. When pulling very hard like that, it's kind of scary so you tend to go slow and easy naturally, but if you get into situations like that often, 2 batteries are nice to have. This is just a base answer, nothing in high detail, but I hope it helps. I used this same winch a few time between 11-29-19, and 12-1-19 in Rush Kentucky. Thanks for watching and putting up a real comment. I hope this helps answer your questions

      @@TDHobbies Yes, there really isn't a video out there that i have seen explaining this. I had to learn the hard way on my RZR last winter. I just bought a winch like yours. I am a bit worried about getting out in deep snow and not only not getting out, but then killing my one battery. haha I'll be walking out then for sure. So.. If i took my time and let the truck charge up the battery then pulled more and kind of switched back and forth i would probably be ok then?

    • @Grimorse
      @Grimorse 5 років тому +2

      Tony Fall2Fast General rule of thumb is 50% work-time. 30 secs on, 30 secs off. Running it for long times like in this video doesn’t prove its reliability, it just causes excess wear on internal components. Essentially shortening its lifespan. Good video though thanks for the upload.

    • @TDHobbies
      @TDHobbies  5 років тому +4

      @@Grimorse Thanks for your input and being polite, you don't see that much on here anymore. If you feel I am running it longer than recommended under the current load and the winch is demonstrating no signs of fatigue, I would think this is a good demonstration on reliability. I didn't really plan on a stress test in this video (I have done a few using this winch, but no video currently). I do agree longevity may be reduced if used like this all the time as I did not measure actual loads with a meter. One thing I will say is it never even got warm! I think the housing doesn't make much contact with the motor, I was TRYING to make it get warm and it never did, at least touching the outer casing. In fact I have overloaded it a few times (for very short pulls) and it just never gets warm at all. The housing design doesn't allow the ability to feel the actual motor like my old winch did. Again, thanks and your statement is a good, especially with this insulated motor design.. This winch get's a lot of use on the trails as I am a group leader lately and recovery vehicle, so far it's working perfectly, other than the wireless feature in remote failed. (Smittybilt warranted it for me) I highly recommend it.
