THE DAEDALUS: 1 of 1 Handmade Aluminum-Body Roadster Inspired by Vintage European Racing | EP18
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 жов 2022
- From myth to masterpiece, the first street car he ever built will become a legend. The curvaceous Daedalus roadster, hand-built from scratch over a span of 17 years in a two-car garage, is a one-off original design with a hand-formed aluminum body, 302-cubic-inch GMC inline six-cylinder engine, C4 Corvette suspension, Truspoke wire wheels, and custom leather interior.
Inspired by European sports roadsters that ruled Sebring, Le Mans, and high-end tracks around the world in the late 50s and early 60s, owner and builder Kris Heil incorporated styling cues from Aston Martin, Jaguar, Ferrari, and Porsche without copying any particular design. Come along as Nicole Johnson learns the art of the English wheel and takes Kris for a coastal ride across Bixby Creek Bridge in Big Sur, California.
ABOUT KRIS HEIL: Kris is a retired firefighter from Northern California who serves as crew chief for his brother's Formula Ford race team. He is currently accepting offers to purchase The Daedalus. For more info about The Daedalus and how to reach Kris, please visit his website.

Thank you so much for watching..glad you enjoyed it!!
No thank you, for great content 👌
@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour You didn't really pick your nose in this car, did you?
@@seivaDsugnA hahaha you'll never know!
@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour Hahahahaha! 🤣👃
The most impressive part of this story is that his wife was supportive of his dream and secure enough with herself to allow her husband to spend countless hours even years on a passion project without giving him a guilt trip about feeling neglected... kudos to her for that.
@@krisheil8266 ok what's the secret? how to get/be around such gem?
I would be in heaven if my hubby loved cars so much he built something this cool! He'd just have to share🙂
Beautiful coastline drive in such a masterpiece of a car. Well done !
I think most wives are supportive of guys who do things like this because it ensures they WILL be around if they're working in the garage on it. Plus it beast them drinking. You probably pay for the car with what you save in booze + you live longer.
Do you know any retired couples?
She will support everything that get him out of the house during the day!
Jokes aside, it's a masterpiece, he's extremely talented and she know it
Thank you,Sir, for making the most beautiful car my old eyes have ever seen. 82 years on this planet, and finally, a car that made me cry. Just wanted to let you know that.
Thank you so much for watching Scott. You just made our day!!
Wow my pleasure as a designer. 🧠what a brain. Wow
Sono completamente d accordo , il maestro ha avuto un gusto nell armonizare le linee dell auto , top !!! ( ITA )
This man is humble genius. So great to witness his engineering art.
We agree!! Glad you enjoyed watching!!
Like others here, I've been into engineering, metalworking and have been building race cars and tube chassis' for decades. In 35 years this is the most beautiful car I've ever seen. Everything is just absolutely gorgeous. Understated. The entire combo works flawlessly and oh my word, the bodywork! The visual look is nothing short of perfection. Timeless. Prettiest car I have ever seen. Nothing to be changed or improved. Unbelievable work Kris! Once you master the english wheel and start forming panels, the sky is the limit. Something I DON'T do a lot of. But can admire even more so when you understand how painstaking and patient you need to be. And moreover - skilled!
Well said!! Thank you so much for watching!!
@@krisheil8266 50+ years of world wide auto adventures ( England to India) all over Europe + South America and many of the US states, this is the King of Custom Cars! Perfectly Pretty + Muscular! 1 M minimum.
Absolutely stunning, so much so, that car would be placed in a museum, or an underground garage vault! 1/1, no one else has it, and I should hope that all that you did is patented! You are an artist, and one of the great minds of this world to have developed such a beautiful car.
I’m speechless….Kris is a craftsman. After the accident his attitude and mental approach is admirable. Not only did he not give up but he turned the heartbreaking experience into an opportunity to make design improvements. Love your show Nicole….you don’t just focus on the cars but bring the cars personality out from the owners who build them.
Yes..we totally agree!! Thank you for watching and for your kind words!!
Rebuilding after basically a total loss. Ugg! Ok that is dedication.
As Mechanical engineer and Designer, Car enthusiast, Motorcycle Fan and Bicycle Freak I must say:
All my honour to this guy!
It´s technically well thought, looks mechanically perfect, and the design, the shape, as well inside, is a master piece!
And Kris is a very, very nice person! Togehter with Nicole in this car, it was a pleasure to watch.
I am happy, that these kind of people are on the planet.

Okay, but 4900 rpm does not give an engine much live feel. We all know that.
@@sommelierramon As one of 3 people who have ever driven this car, and the only person who's ever driven it for 6 hours straight, I can tell you it feels perfectly suited to the car in every way... a very satisfying experience and I wouldn't change a thing!

@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour I love te car, but I'm European and grew up with 60's Ferrari's ,etc... and their sound. And their breaking downs, yes. This car sounds very healthy, for a truck, sorry, beautiful car, ever . Oh yes I'm sure driving this car is really nice, no doubt. I wouldn't refuse it. So absolutely:💗👍
I absolutely love it “I named it after the crafty old man, not the stupid kid!” Never a truer statement!

Im with you.. made me laugh this story. And with a point!
There's been plenty of amazing cars on this channel, but this one takes the cake. The knowledge and skills required to build something like this...simply, wow. Not to mention that sound...great video as always!
Thank you!! We really appreciate you watching..glad you liked it!!
i totally agree the talent to build this and the patience involved just to get it this right cause it is right.
"I'm a builder, not a collector". My philosophy as well. Always ready for the next adventure. Thanks Nicole for another great episode.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching..we're glad you enjoyed it!!
Holy smokes - this show is way better than anything on cable television. Subbed - look forward to more episodes.
Seeing a GM straight six wrapped in 50s style racer body is like something from a dream. Great video.
Thank you so much for the sub! Glad you enjoyed watching!!
Agreed
I am very thankful to UA-cam's algorithm to make me stumble into this amazing story. Thankful for Nicole and her team to have produced this video. And specially, very thankful to Kris Heil for having produced this precious beauty in his golden years and to make a dream came true. After being questioned why he wants to sell his Daedalus, Kris replies: "I am a builder not a collector". But I tell you this, Kris: you are living evidence that one can achieve his/hers dreams, no matter how old one is. And, perhaps, this is the most valuable lesson one can take from your creation. To dare to create, to dare to live life at its fullest, with a true and meaningful sense of Life. What an inspiration! Wow!
A final sweet note for Kris’ wife (Cindy?) who, as @Nicolas Ruvalcaba correctly pointed out, has a great deal of credit. Cindy and Kris both bring an inspiring example of what Love really is (or should be), which reminds me a Erich Fromm’s line of what Love is about: "In love the paradox occurs that two beings become one and yet remain two”.
Thank you!
PS - did you notice the feedback this video got from the audience? 3.600 replies out of 13.000 likes, that makes probably the highest UA-cam interaction rate ever. Well done!
Thank you so much for watching!! It's comments like yours that inspire us to continue our search for new and different stories. It was our honor to be able to share The Daedalus and Kris's incredible story of the 17 year journey to it's creation!! All of us at Detour truly appreciate your kind words.

@@krisheil8266 Hey Kris you need to film your next project for the Smithsonian. Your mindset of construction is Historic! Jay Leno would Love to own this Masterpiece. So would any auto collector.
I have built road & race cars for over 50 years. Kris's talent & eye for detail is staggering. What he has built is a thing of beauty. Well done mate, you have given me a new mountain to try & climb. (edited because I miss-spelt Kris's name)
Hi Kerry. I have just read your comment on building cars. Do you use the same technique as kris I find it fascinating to build a car with a wheeling machine and wooden bucks. I wish I could do something like that. One other thing are you on UA-cam showing people how to do all this stuff because I would definitely watch it. Cheers.
@@russcooke5671 I am not on YT showing what I do. I am on quite a few of "A Foreigner in the Philippines" (search Kerry when on that channel), but my history was building race, rally, speedway cars & also performing left to right hand drive conversions on imported cars.
I was a teacher of panelbeating (body work for the US folk) in N.S.W. Australia for 13 years. I then moved to California for 11 years completing restoration work on pre & post WWII cars. I also built hot rods & custom cars & trucks.
Now back in Australia basically retired but doing a lot of "hand forming" of car & bike panels no longer readily available. Yes I have an English Wheel, along with a shop full of the necessary tools & equipment that is required for this kind of work.
One of the good YT channels is "Make It Kustom" & for a young bloke, Karl is talented and shows a lot of ways of doing things with basic tools. That is something I used to teach my night classes (hobby class) after showing & demonstrating all the equipment the college had, was then to show the class how to do the same at home with basic gear.
i'm on it, i'm on it, i was paying attention when you said strength comes from geometry not from weight, and i was delighted to see you also make models. i used straws and hot glue, at the same time captured the full design in pyopenscad (full parametric python-based 3D). the straws made sure i got the geodesic rigidity right!
Nicole, what a humbling story of a man and his dream to build a one off machine, and after his accident he never gave up to rebuild it better than before. Chris has the perseverance to keep going until he realized his dreams.
We agree!! Thank you for watching!
Kris's wealth of knowledge will be greatly missed when he is sadly gone. What an absolute masterpiece of machinery. I feel honored to have been able to set my eyes upon its glory. Thank You Kris.....You are a Legend in my book.

you can't stop enyoing this car
For a man who had never even been a car guy, you have an enviable and stylish eye for design. This is beautiful.
Can't believe this work of automotive excellence hasn't been snatched up by someone yet. 😲
What a car! My all time favourite is the Jaguar XJ13. This is Jaguar, Maserati, Ferrari and Aston Martin thrown together with just a hint of late C1 Corvette. Absolutely gorgeous and what a relief Chris didn't just chuck an LS V8 in there. Cross flow straight 6 is genious. True art on four wheels. Broke my heart to see the original wrecked.
Thank you for watching!!
Absolutely absurd. Props to this gent. That is one of the most gorgeous cars I’ve ever seen in my 53 years.

I couldn't sell it work of art .
WHAT a beautiful car! A beautiful drive. And an owner who happy to let us all enjoy it! Thanks Chris and Nicole!

Chris isn't just a fabricator designer, engineer etc he is pure artist. The Dadalous is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. The body lines and subtleties he incorporated show his artistry and his love of design. I hope we all get a chance to see his next creation. With everything he has learned the next one should be fabulous.
Barrett Jackson auctioneers would have a field day with this one and it surely would finance his next creation with alot in reserve.
Thanks for sharing!

I really enjoyed this. I build furniture and fix cars, was a cadcam draftsman, also cook, but now work in IT for state government and Chris just showed me my dream retirement life, wonder if it will happen for me, but if it doesn't I'm so glad to see this!! Nicole I missed you giving a comment to Chris' ultimate compliment to you when he said he doesn't usually ride shotgun and (it's the first time) he feels totally comfortable with you driving. That's from a man who spent what, 17 years creating (yes i'm going to use that word) the vehicle, got into a wreck by a wreckless driver, and rebuilding, that is an ultimate expression of a man's capability over some material things put together, and people like you and me actually see the love in humanity over a moving art object. I could see myself learning the english wheel now that my kids are grown, thanks for sharing this with all of us.
That car better be put in the Museum of Science and Industry at some point. What a beautiful example of engineering and passion.
It is meant to be driven, sounds and looks beautiful.
Hands down one of the best shows on UA-cam, and I spend hours a day on this platform.
That's awesome..thank you so much!!
Chris is a bigger charmer than he is car builder. 😂. What a genius of a man with decades of experience. I'd work a year for free helping him just to learn some of what he knows.
All I can say is “WOW” truly rolling art and craftsmanship like no other. Thanks so much for sharing your car through Nicole’s UA-cam channel.

I guess I have to say this is “The” most beautiful car that I have ever seen. As others, I am an apprenticeship served mechanic. I have worked in Engineering. And worked on everything from Motorcycles to high end Cars, and then on to yes! Tanks. Yes the real military tanks. I think that this guy, apart from being a great guy is just one fantastic engineer. This is one of the most gorgeous cars I’ve ever seen. The midnight emerald green was the perfect color to show off the stunningly sexy body lines! The body truly does pay homage to so many sport coups of the 1960’s: Jaguar, Ferrari, Lotus, Aston Martin, Cobra; without copying anyone of them. Oh, and the classic European straight 6 exhaust note. Just perfect! If that car had been put into production in the 1960’s it would’ve been a legend among its peers! Exquisite in every way!!!
We agree!! Thanks so much for watching..we're so glad you enjoyed it!!
@@krisheil8266 you’re so welcome Kris. You deserve every compliment because you really knocked it out of the park with that one. There is not a car lover of the era you modeled her after, including myself, that wouldn’t want a poster of it hanging on their shop wall. It came out that fantastic. By the way, LOVE the interior color as well. Everything about the car is like how Mary Poppins described herself, “Practically perfect in every way”. Enjoy the fruit of your labor my friend. Cheers!!!
Now that I understand the engine, I think it is the best choice ever. American straight sixes are the unsung heroes and deserve a little love too. Pure genius.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us..we appreciate it!!
While they didn't make inroads with the hot-rod fraternity in the '50's, there were a lot of dragsters built with "Jimmy 6's"! Could put out some serious power. Great engine choice and it sounds great!

What a masterpiece. The looks and the sound. Perfection.😍
Glad you like it! We appreciate you watching!!
What a testament to his engineering skills that the car was able to handle the accident as well as it did. To come back and improve it is inspiring. I don't recall seeing another home-built special sorted to this level. I love his choice of the big GMC inline-6 with such unique old-school hot rod components as it truly fits the car. Seeing how he was able to use enough off-the-shelf parts to keep it easy to service also shows an extra degree of thoughtfulness. Whoever ends up buying it will be one lucky individual!
We couldn't agree more!! Thank you so much for watching..glad you enjoyed it!!
It is a tube chassis car. It is very very good at passager protection. It is superior aproach to anything mass produced. Downside of design is, in general, lack of usable space. This car is good example - while it fits only two people it still can't cary more than 4 grocery bags and maybe fifth wheel.
I have two words for this car: simply beautiful 💙
Thank you for featuring Kris, Nicole.
Our pleasure! Thank you for watching!!

I'm amazed that Nicole has never driven the PCH before. I'm a Brit and a retired video editor, but in the 80's and 90's I visited the US at least once a year, and I did it 4 times! It is indeed a magical place. Some of the views are among the best in the world. On one occasion I stayed in a tiny motel at a place called Lucia, about half way through Big Sur. It was right on the edge between the road and a sheer drop into the Pacific. It had little cabins with decks and getting up in the morning I sat on the deck with a coffee and just looked at the view.

I've always wanted to build a custom ride, since I don't have the garage space to build a car I'm going to start with a motorcycle. Wow. As a Brit who admires the classics like E type Jags, and 1960's Ferrari's and Aston Martins etc, I am blown away by that car. To build one like that is amazing. How satisfying to drive your own super car!
We're so glad you enjoyed watching!!
I want to say how much I love your channel before you get millions of subs, you're amazing.

Yes..we agree! Thank you for watching!!
You guys always pick the coolest cars. I especially appreciate the opportunity you give the owners to ‘talk story’ 🤙🏼 about their build journeys.
Thank you..we're glad you are enjoying!!
I can't get over how beautiful and perfect that car is!! It sounds great and Nicole shifts the gears so well, I felt like I was driving it.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for watching!!
If I had put that much time into creating such a gorgeous car, I definitely could not let it go. Thank you for sharing. Awesome.
You're welcome!! Thank you so much for watching. Glad you liked it!
Wow. Just wow. It is so inspiring to someone accomplish this. I was at first awestruck by the design, execution and classic beauty of the car. However, after listening to the joy Kris obviously had building it had me smiling through the entire video. Well done eliciting that Nicole!
Wow, thank you! We're so glad you enjoyed it!!
I;ve been going to car shows now for over 50 years, This car is one of my top favorites.
The skill level this man brings is second to none! 💯👍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍
Thank you so much for watching. We're so glad you like it!!
I really really enjoyed watching Nicole really really enjoy driving this beauty. Handbuilt, by the most handsome dad dude. On that sunny day dream coastline road. Beautiful, everything! If I had millions laying around, I'd buy her the car in exchange for taking me on an ride on that very road, so I could watch her smile again and listen to this roaring inline six. Like, really!
What a nice comment! We're so glad you enjoyed watching!!
What an honor to be able to see such a wonderful creation, especially through the always thoughtful, insightful, and thoroughly enjoyable Nicole Johnson viewpoint! Kris built a car cobbled out of the dreams of everyone who grew up admiring the wonderful sports cars of the 1950's and early 1960's. But he built it so much better! I first learned to drive in a Jaguar XK-150 - when it would run... The Daedalus is so much more! Thank you Nicole!!!
Thank you so much for your kind words. We truly appreicate your support! Glad you like this amazing car as much as we do!!
That is a true racer at heart: designing a car around a cylinder head. Well done!
