OOOHHH love this tutorial !!! I've had such a difficult time casting on (even following someone else's video tutorial) - can't wait to get home - watching this at work - and start this hat !!!! Thank you
I’ve been knitting for nearly 50 years and never liked the cast on end of the musselburgh! So I start at the point after the increases, using a cord to hold them. Then after doing the rest of the hat, I come back to the beginning and start decreasing. I just think it looks prettier when both ends are decreased.
I also don’t like that criss cross pattern so I just start off with a magic circle and 8 stitches then I place markers between the stitches and increase at each marker on every other round. That gives me a lovely rounded top with an 8 segment swirly pattern.
@catofthecastle1681. I’ve wondered if this is possible but wouldn’t you need to cast on so many stitches to begin ? Does this create a line around the hat where these cast on stitches are? Grateful for any tips 🙏
@@valthorman2270 You have to cast on the same amount in the body but you would be knitting them anyway! No, because you just slip them on the needles. No kitchener or anything like that! You just start decreasing as if you’re at the other end!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Want to make one of these hats. Scared to try beforehand. This will make such a difference. Will be getting to pattern now. Have a great holiday. ❤
Thank you SOO much for this video. So easy peasy. I made one when the pattern came out. I’ve been wanting to make another but all the starting again, i dreaded. Cast on today with your help and going to town as my Christmas eve cast on. Its perfect!! ❤
I was confused with the placing of the markers. I kept coming up with only two lanes and not 4 so I will try this method and I hope it works 😅. Thank you
I just started this hat and hate the M1L and R. I’m not that far along and will switch and tuck that end inside if it looks different😁 Thank you for the suggestion.
I never did the Make one left or right. I always increased by knitting in the front and back. Just be away of where you want that new stitch to be and the new stitch looks like a little purl bump. I could not show the whole thing as I did not want to give away the whole pattern out of respect for the designer. Hope that helps.
For a beginner, yes. For me personally, no. I've been knitting for over 50 years and I enjoy anything that is new or difficult. However, this video was originally made for my nephew who is very new to knitting. I attempted to simplify it as much as possible for him. Thought it might be useful for others so I put it out there on youtube. If you want to try something new, go for it and try the pinhole. A challenge can be fun.
So sorry you couldn't see it well. I think I will redo it with a more suitable color. I am going to post the same video continental style in the next couple of days and will use a lighter yarn and a closer view. Thanks for your feedback and support. It is definitely a learning curve! Best wishes
Yes, it is. My grandmother taught it to me when I was 5 years old and she lived in a small town in Northern England near Liverpool. It seems other viewers from that area know of this cast on too. Possibly it originated there. Best wishes!
Well, I give up right off. This pattern is ridiculously expensive for a hat, I am sorry. There are hundreds of other hats that are prettier and don't cost as much, or are free, and I have 30+ knitting books.... Not going to pay this much money for a hat pattern.
I hope you will find one you enjoy. It is a personal choice. The beauty of this one is the many layers it provides if you live in a cold climate and that you can knit it in many different weights and gauges. But, it is certainly not for everyone. My next hat will be colourwork with a latvian braid and that one is called August Hat and it is free on ravelry. Best wishes and happy knitting
I did and although I have knitted for years I found it the most difficult start point. Then working the gauge vs size vs wool wt was challenging. This might help.
I would have never ever gotten anywhere in this pattern without your help! I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this!
You're so welcome! Your comment made my day. 🥰
After 3 days and countless hours you have gotten me started! Thank you so much!!!
You are most welcome! Best wishes ❤️
It's a wonderful pattern
Knit a few times
Thanks for your tips
It really is a great pattern. I hope my nephew enjoys it as much as I do.
I’m casting this on over Christmas break. I’ve owned the pattern for a while, but the comments scared me. Thanks for making it look easy!
You’ll do great! The pattern is surprisingly easy. Just take it one step at a time and you will have a hat in no time. 😊

I am so glad that i was able to help. Wishing you a wonderful Christmas with lots of knitting. 😊
I usually used knit one front & back , never crazy about make one left/right. Beginning the top is easier the way you showed, Thank you
You're welcome. Happy knitting!
A very clear tutorial, thank you! I have the pattern and need to get going.
Thank you for watching and your feedback 😊
Omg that is the cast on I learned 45 years ago
I won't say how long ago I learned but it was my first cast -on type and I've used it for almost everything ever since. Always seems to work well.
Thank you!
You're so welcome. Glad it was helpful

I do the same cast on that my mom taught me 70 years ago!
I love it! I meet so few people who know this cast on version.
I just started this hat and hate the M1L and R. I’m not that far along and will switch and tuck that end inside if it looks different😁 Thank you for the suggestion.
Glad you found it helpful! 😊
When you knit a few rows off camera (for example, rnd 3) were you still doing the m1L and m1R from the pattern in that round?

Do you find the pinhole caston to be difficult?

I cast on in a simikar fashion but I only loop round my thumb once why do you dobut several times
I had to just cast on a couple of stitches to visualize it again. lol. I loop around once but the yarn crosses at the front. I hope that makes sense.
@@mywonderfulknittinglifeOK it looks like you wrap twice but whatever it works and mine works for me
@@gillianrolland4305 Glad you have a cast on that works for you. Enjoy your project!
Such a pity you used dark yarn I found it difficult to see - but thank you for all the hard work

Thats just a version of the long tail cast on.
Yes, it is. My grandmother taught it to me when I was 5 years old and she lived in a small town in Northern England near Liverpool. It seems other viewers from that area know of this cast on too. Possibly it originated there. Best wishes!
This is great to leave for posterity. Your hands look like they hurt.
Thanks! I have terrible allergies and I unfortunately touched something that did not agree with me. They look better today though.
I think it would be easier to follow if a lighter colored yarn were used. It´s not easy to see the stitches when the yarn is dark.
Thank you for your feedback. I will keep this in mind for the next one. Best wishes.
