  • Tommy Bolin Teaser - Classic Album Review
This is one of my desert island discs. However, it was not always this way. In 1975 when I heard that this guy was replacing my hero Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple, I had no interest in hearing it at all.
Within a year this album took me on a journey of discovery which introduced me to Billy Cobham, Jazz fusion and a realisation that this was one of the most talented musicians of his era.
The video talks about the album, related albums and which versions to get on CD and vinyl.

I have Teaser, Private Eyes, and Cobham’s Spectrum, all on vinyl. Love them! It’s quite uncanny how much our interests coincide!

You have a most impressive collection of Tommy Bolin material! I wish Jeff Porcaro got more credit for his playing on Teaser which I think is Amazing! I remember reading in one of the music magazines and saving the article about Tommy's death! That is pretty much how we found out about it. It was not on the radio or TV. What a DAMN loss! I do not think any of us have really gotten over his death! We just feel a hole in our hearts.

I was fortunate enough to see Tommy in Sept 76 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. I love this album, it has always been in my top 25

Hi and WOW! What was the gig like? That was just a few months before he sadly passed. Thank you for taking the time to watch my video. Teaser is in my top 10 albums of all time. Thanks, Phil

@@NowSpinningMagazine Well, it was 44 years ago.....He opened for Rick Derringer and Blue Oyster Cult. All I remember is being blown away when he did "Post Toastee." His death, along with Rory Gallagher and Phil Lynott are the self-inflicted ones that really bother me. When you look at what he accomplished (Come Taste the Band, Teaser, Private Eyes) in the 12 months from Oct 75 - Sept 76, it would have been interesting to see what he could have done had he lived another 40 some years.

@@alltheworldsastage899 I can imagine Post Toastee being amazing live. He was such an amazing player and could play any style. Another artist who we lost, in the same way, is Paul Kossoff.

I got introduced to Tommy Bolin, when a friend brought ‘Private Eyes’. I remember the event, that was the Geffen Records vinyl boxset. Of course I followed the legal tussles that prevented the original RPM cd ‘ lost on a raging ocean’. Yet the compromised song list, did include’ ‘Crazed Fandango’ . I actually prefer the band demo of ‘Wild Dogs’ as it’s more reigned in, with minimal lead guitar overdubs.Ditto ‘Teaser’ which came out on a ‘From The Archives’ series. Of course the MK4 rehearsals,we’re revelatory.

Great review of one of my top 10 favourite albums of all time. Having bought and loved "Come Taste The Band" LP, I was naturally curious about Tommy's "Teaser" LP. Mine is the original US pressing on Nemperor. The album surprised me when I heard it
    and I wasn't disappointed.
My musical tastes had become diverse somewhat and I'd already been listening to some jazz fusion such as by Return To Forever. Mind you the album came out after I'd seen DP MKIV in concert where they played "Wild Dogs" from. "Teaser". I also investigated the Billy Cobham "Spectrum" LP based on the current stories of how Coverdale had heard Bolin's playing on the "Quadrant 4" track and recommended him to Purple.
I bought "The Ultimate..." 3 LP boxed set when it came out. I was happy it had come out at that time. I also have a couple of different versions of "From The Archives" though both have identical track listings. Notwithstanding I also own "Private Eyes" on LP & CD. That one took a little while to grow on me but I quite like it. The myriad versions of "Teaser" on CD are intriguing. There's some nice stuff out there. I do have the original CD version of it but I might investigate further. Thanks again for the reviews. I love your passion when you do these. Well done. 😊 Cheers mate.

Try to find an album by a band named Rainbow Canyon Band, album title Rollin In The Rockies. Tommy Bolin is an uncredited guitarist playing the solos on the track Invisible Song. This album was produced by Jimmy Fox of The James Gang which is how Tommy got involved. It was recorded in Colorado.

Hi Patrick, thank you for sharing your story and memories of Tommy Bolin. You are very lucky to have seen him. I did have a chance but being such a big Ritchie Blackmore fan I passed on seeing Purple on the Come Taste The Band Tour. I regret that a lot. Phil :)

May 1976 Elvin bishop (with Mickey Thomas), tommy bolin and heart’s first tour I believe. Tommy and heart just blew me away and elvin wasnt too bad himself.
Nov 1976 Robin trower, Steve Marriott All stars, and Tommy bolin. I know that trower blew me away. Can’t remember much about Steve but Tommy like I said earlier was good not great but good. He was more relaxed and mellow and now we know why

Agree on all points (not least about the consistently horrendous artwork on the archive releases), great review. I presume you have the Miami '76 Deep Purple show, easily the best recorded MkIV concert.

    Thanks. Really interesting.
To me the Teaser and Private Eyes sleeves were cool so it’s a real shame, for me, that what followed were terrible choices.
Definitely a great, great, talent and some fine sounds.
Favourite of mine - very much getting back into good honest classic rock etc and was into Teaser at school in the 80s even though I didn’t know anyone who had it and my friend hardly listened to Come Taste the Band- which he got when we were a bit young. I am enjoying the Kevin Shirley remixes.
    Yours Aye.
