Making Large Ceramic Vessels - Wheel Throwing + Hand Building

- If you can throw a pair of matching bowls, you can make surprisingly large pottery with the addition of a rolled slab of clay. I used 4" and 8" round tube forms to wrap slabs of clay, and with the addition of wheel thrown ends, made several large vessels.
This is the first time I have tried this. The biggest tip I can offer is to wrap your forms in newspaper. Make sure to not tape the newspaper to the tube, for easy removal.
I hope you enjoy. Please leave a comment.
I too put my often-used brusahable glazes in 1 and 1/2 pint mason jars.....and a syringe for precise drip control! Great video!
Great construction
Fantastic video
They'd make excellent brewing vessels. Great video and work as always
These are awesome! I have got to make some.
Absolutely great!
If I haven't achieved pulling vessels up to 12 " by the end of August, this will help me make growlers during the Scottish week at John C. Campbell Folk School week.
Thanks for sharing!
That tool at 1:26! I’ve never seen anything like that before but it seems like a great idea.
Thanks! I sell them on my website to help support the channel. www.justinsmakery.com
Awesome!!
Cool and creative!! Love your videos because they are so different....it's sort of "clay engineering art".
Thanks!
I really like the crawling, it’s a good effect. Love the blue dripped one also. 👍🇬🇧
This is my first time to watch your videos. Very informative and It is great to see the finished product .
Justin, you always present super interesting videos. I really like the blue with the run/drips.
Great idea! I will give it a try with more texture on the tube. thanks for the idea!
Justin, you are amazingly creative! I look forward to your videos. I will definitely check out your online store when I get ready to get back to the studio.
Thank you 😊
Very nice! I have been wanting to try my hand at some smaller fermenting vessels but knew I wouldn't be able to throw something big enough. Love the idea of throwing a top and bottom, then slab building the middle! Might be the answer to my issue.
I enjoy your videos so much. This was simply awesome! Can’t wait to try it.
Love love love, I am definitely going to try this out!
Very cool! Can’t wait to try it!
I love them all. 🌵🌵
Absolutely love it, I'm making some this week
Really nice! Hope to try it soon.
Those are cool, the larger ones are like the old milk jugs maybe? Nice anyway. Thanks for the video
Great love it and I will try one thanks
solid red with a powdery blue-green would be amazing. will you share that red recipe? it sort of looks like an improved randys red
Great results! Thanks for the always entertaining video’s!
Hey I’m wondering if you’ve ever added pieces of metal to the clay and what would happen when it’s fired?
Hi, Love the video. Where did you get your cantering hole maker? Great tool!
They look like military gear
They look great, thank you. I hand build but don't throw, when my kiln works! This begs the question though, could you throw short bottle and cut in half then put the slab extension in it?
You certainly can. I have tried it with so-so success. I find it easier to make each piece separately where I can control the edges and add galleries to receive the tube of clay.
Curious about the cool tool you used when throwing to clear the bottom thickness out.
Something you made or purchased?
I'm imagining I'd find that very useful myself.

Thanks for asking. I make them and sell them on my website. I call it a "Bottom Setter". www.justinsmakery.com.
