Gibson & Mesa: 5 Reasons Not to Freak Out -- Tones from the Boogie Barn Vol. 1

- It's no secret that I'm a Mesa Boogie freak, and I do live in a barn-like (in a good way) house, so there you go. Tones from the Boogie Barn! This series is all about the TONES, whether from my small army of Mesas, my beloved G&L Guitars, Line 6 and Chase Bliss Audio effects etc etc etc. But to start things off, we must address the elephant at the door: Gibson's bombshell acquisition of Mesa in 2021. Many are freaking out... here are 5 reasons not to.

THIS. Well said, my friend.
I think it may be a big positive. With Gibson’s commitment to keep innovating, they also understand the desire to keep the classics available (at significantly less than what a true vintage would cost). I foresee the Mesa brand still evolving, but I am hoping to see reissues of classic Boogies at a price us mere mortals can afford.
A year down the road, it seems like Mesa is on track. I’m looking forward to some Gibson reissues soon, hopefully.
@@JB_Eckl and a year later, I finally drank the kool aid. Got in a Mk V 90 combo (Vanilla tolex and wicker grill, of course), and less than a week later ordered a Rectoverb 25 combo (Helix pairs nicely with them for Fx fwiw) p
Finances willing, I WILL be expanding the collection (maybe a Mk I king snake or even a Fillmore).
All this from a “the only clean amp is a blackface fender, and the only crunch tone is a Marshall plexi” (barring the 5e3 deluxe which is just fun).. for me to go all in on Boogie says something.
This is amazing, because I’m running a vanilla/wicker Mark V 90 and a King Snake… WITH HELIX… as we speak
@@JB_Eckl great minds think alike! Lol
Cool video Man! People are freaking because they’re envisioning 2015 Gibson! I’m very interested to see what the partnership produces!
Fingers crossed!
I feel the same way. Evolution is a fact of life. I’ve had the privilege of playing some of the older Gibson tube amps and they were amazing. Looking forward to what’s to come
This is the most grounded statement regarding the merger and I for one am glad to see someone talking sense.
Thanks so much. It turns out I Fluff made most of the exact (EXACT) same points in his livestream the other day, but I promise I didn’t see it until just now. Haha.
I always love your demeanor and delivery, sir. Keep it chill and positive!
Tryin’ out here!!
Glad I bought my MESA amps pre-Gibson. Hope R Smith got paid he deserves it.
Do you really think quality is going to drop?
Nice video! Your editor is the best I’ve ever seen... or heard....
"He's" a smashing voice actor too. Ahem.
@@JB_Eckl why is he’s in quotation marks? Lmaoo
@@LAKANMusic LOL, I wondered about that too.
Nice video, fair point of view too. Got ya self a new sub. Would love a video in the Lonestar you got chilling in the background 😃
Thanks! Yeah I have to make some videos about that one. My workhorse for over 10 years.
I enjoyed that!
Thanks man.
Like many watching this, I'll never forget when my ears discovered Mesa. After plugging my gibsons and fenders into combinations of Marshall and Fender amps (sumultaneously) chasing a sound... there it was. The guitarist had thee sound with that Third Stone From The Sun riff throne in for fun haha. A Mesa Subway Rocket has been doing it for me for a couple of decades.
You mentioned Mesa availability in Australia and Europe. If this improves, I'm all for it. I got my custom shop Nomad combo from the floor stock in a shop in Italy. ( For nearly half the cost of a standard model in Australia ). I imported a Recto rec preamp from (old stock) a shop in Colorado for $1,500 ( Including postage, import tax and conversion to 240v ). Cost in Australia? Over $3,500. The only thing I purchased here was my 50/50 stereo amp shop demo which still cost $2,500 plus postage. If Mesa aren't selling well in Australia it's because their local distributors are milking it as much as they can. I tried to get a couple of replacement knobs and some tubes from Mesa direct. No chance. They have to protect a distributor who doesn't care about a customer unless he's spending thousands on a new amp. I would love to see them lose their franchise. Go Gibson.
First very positive development of the Gibson Mesa acquisition! I was in Guitar Center a few days ago and noticed they had some new (not used) Mesa pedals in stock…the result of Mesa now getting to use the distribution capabilities of the Gibson dealer network! I walked out with a Mesa 5-band EQ pedal…a pedal I have been looking for for a while now, but the single smaller local Mesa dealer in Minneapolis/St.Paul never had them in stock.
I hear you! Also, I love that pedal. I got so used to having the EQ on my Mark V, I wanted to be able to add it to my other Mesas. It sounds great.
@@JB_Eckl Yeah, I played Marks for several years. I now have the EQ pedal in the loop of my Triple Crown 100. It’s absolutely killer!
Yep one more thing to panic about lol! But no fear the Boogie Barn is hear;) Interesting about Yamaha owning Line 6 , didn’t know that although I am not surprised Yamaha didn’t blow it, they have been making guitars longer than Fender
Ok. Lets see what kind of amps come out of this...
I’m curious as well.
My Lone star special looks just like yours, I love it to death! Best amp I’ve ever owned by far.
It's incredible! If yours looks like mine, did it originally come from Long & McQuade in Canada?
@@JB_Eckl yes It did come from long and Mcquade
@@ericgould435 It was a special run just for them. What a great look! I also love the traditional LSS scheme, but these are even more… special. Haha.
Do you think 10 or 20 watts is good for bedroom level? Or is it too loud?
Honestly the Cali Tweed is the only amp that has true ‘bedroom level’ at its 2 Watt setting. I love the 5 and 10 watt modes on my other amps but it’s still fairly loud, especially if anyone else is home!
@@JB_Eckl I have a 5 watt Bugera T5 head and a cab with a 40watt jensen speaker and even that bitch gets loud so I was just asking bc I thought maybe 10 doubled the volume and 20 quadrupled it. Im also really considering this amp because I am looking for a combo that isn't too big with 6v6's
What amp was featured in this video?
Mark V in Tweed mode. 45 watts, Variac power.
Love your tone. I sold my dual rec , just sounded sterile to me. I like my lone star special and been wanting to try out a California Tweed . Unfortunately the closest Mesa dealer is over 100 miles away. Hopefully the merger with Gibson will remedy that.
@@mikebray4325 Thanks man. I’ve never been a Rec guy; my preferences definitely lean old school. The Lonestar Special is really what gave me the Boogie bug. What an amp! Might still be my favorite.
I admit I’m curious about the Badlander though...
I don't want to see messa boogie `s name on import gear . But I think
His design,s would work wonders on a epiphone product.
We should be seeing something soon… no idea what it’ll be.
How has Mesa’s business been lately? Wonder if they’re in financial woes and needed someone to buy them?🤔🤷🏻♂️
Not sure, but the last few new amps have been well-received. The California Tweed, the TC series and the lower-watt Mark Vs seem to have a lot of fans out there. Who knows.
Hoping for the best. So many companies are fleeing California because of the high cost of doing business there. I wonder if they'll move the Mesa HQ. Gibson seems to have improved quality, but they're overpriced IMO. Their factory Custom Shop stuff is more expensive than some really great boutique makers. I'm thinking specifically of Collings Gibson-ish electrics, but there are others (Fano, Knaggs, etc). PRS has been making better Les Pauls than Gibson for two decades.
I missed this take from a year ago! Apologies. I get what you’re saying, but I do have three modern-era Gibsons that are insanely great. My 335 from the ‘90s, a 2015 ES-Les Paul and this new SG. They certainly have the mojo.
Seems like this video has aged quite well.
Haha, cool. I have to say every demo of those Falcon amps is a bullseye for me.
Wasn’t Gibson in deep financial trouble just months ago? How is it they are now buying a company like Mesa?
No, actually they were in financial troubles a couple of years ago, then they was bought by a private equity fund which restructured the company. The current product line, which is excellent, is the result of that restructuring.
This is my understanding as well.
To be fair, Gibson hasn’t run their company that well for the last 50 years?
I was hoping the new management would turn it around… time will tell
So...another Mesa artist says it's a good thing. No way!
Hahaha. I guess so. But what I’m really saying is it COULD be a good thing. Only time will tell.
@@JB_Eckl Don't get me wrong...I hope you're correct.
Gibson will RUIN MESA!!!!!!!! Yes they will!!!
The new Mark VII looks pretty badass.
