  • A recent story of how I ended up onstage with Los Lobos, one of my absolute favorite bands... with 15 minutes' notice. I also showcase a few of their killer guitar riffs, of course. Make sure you check out their albums, and the ones by Latin Playboys too if you're into the experimental stuff. Special thanks to my friend Armando Tavares!
    Check out the epic session my band Dig Infinity did with David Hidalgo HERE:

    My neighbor was a KPFT dj in the early 70's (in Houston) and was a huge part of my musical education and evolution. He turned me on to Los Lobos in '72. I've seen them many times. Amazing band and love the way they trade instrument roles during different songs. Killer band. Those guys are higher level musicians.

    I saw Los Lobos on a PBS special around 1992 or 1993 that featured multiple artists covering Beatles songs as some sort of tribute. Los Lobos chose to do Tomorrow Never Knows and not only nailed the backwards time signature vibe of the original but just smoked the song in general. At that point I bought How Will the Wolf Survive and Kiko. Whiskey Trail, That Train Don't Stop Here Anymore and Riva's House just JUMPED out of the speakers. Great performances and phenomenal production and engineering.

      I think I watched that too about that time (PBS television early or mid '90s)I think they also noted the Beatles as one of the many inspirations on their music or something to that effect.

    Oh My God! You are one of the most fortunate human beings on the planet. But to be clear, no one just jumps onstage with Los Lobos. You obviously have the goods and the courage to deliver when called on to do so. At the end of the vid you hit on the key; you are a good listener. Good playing is mostly listening to and being aware of the environment.

    Great story! My “UA-cam time” couldn’t have come quick enough to finally hear it after you teased of the video onFacebook!
    Never realized Los Lobos did as much as they did. Kind of thought of them doing an album or 2 in the 80s, and then drifted into the nostalgia shows (and the occasional TV/movie soundtrack spot). Will definitely have to check more out! Also love how they do the jam band thing as well.
    You do realize though that now you are a Californian, it’s required that you learn more Dead tunes!

    • @JB_Eckl
      @JB_Eckl  Рік тому

      I know, I know. I mean I can play most of the songs from the American Beauty album on acoustic, so that should count for something!
      The thing to know about Los Lobos is that they went EXTREMELY experimental in the ‘90s. Sonically, conceptually, you name it. It’s really kind of psychedelic in a way. Tchad Blake’s engineering is on a whole other level. You’re really in for a ride with those albums.

    Welcome to the post-COVID world! What an exciting story for you and for us. My guess is there isn’t a musician of any level who dreams of being the stand-in for one of their favorite band musicians. You lived it! How cool. As a former very small-time studio musician from Days Gone By, your (their) advice ti listen to the music is about the best advice a serious musician can get. And the highest compliment to receive!
    Two small suggestions for improvement to your future videos. I’ve been watching you since you sat in your basement at your laptop and taught us - including this low-guitar-skill drummer - how to play gee-tar. So one, don’t clap your hands. It is loud and distracting. And I would ditch the “you guys” phrase. I know it is collective, but I am old enough not to hear it that way.
    But I want more so keep them coming!
