I was a Thai ex-pat that had worked in Singapore for 10 years. I follow local football regularly and went to watch SPL and SG's NT matches from time to time. The first time I arrived in Singapore 10 years ago, I was dumbfounded that none of the clubs and even the league were privatized. It makes no sense as a Thai since we believe SG is more business mind than us. We privatized the league and all the clubs in 2009 and look what the Thai League has become. Thai League is now in the top 4 of East Asia according to the latest ranking from the AFC. Meanwhile, SPL (former S League) who was the number one league in SEA is ranked lower than Myanmar. And to this day, only LCS is a private club in the league. What an irony. When no one owns the league or club, no one cares about their performance. The clubs will participate in the tournament just for the sake of participation. They don't care where they rank because that won't affect them in any way. The same goes for the league. Why bother making the league more profitable when it won't affect their KPI? That is how the Thai League managed to cull away amateur clubs. If Singapore wants to improve, just needs to start by privatizing the league and I guarantee you will see a huge difference.
I agree, if someone like a Sky bought the league it would be much more exciting and aspirational for people within the country. The first person/business to buy a SPL club will dominate for a long time.
I agree with the point about footballing culture, many people have their careers hindered by academic results and NS. I've had classmates who were barred from playing in competitions due to poor grades even if they are the teams star player, the priority on grades instead of development in football is also a result of the aforementioned lack of job security. I feel that NS is also a major factor, the age we go into NS is prime development years for a football player, look at how many players in Europe's top leagues made their debuts in their late teens, or in their early 20s, CR7, Messi, Mbappe, Rashford, Becks, Lampard and many others. Look at Ben Davies, who got signed by Fullham, who jumped ship to Thailand because of NS.
When you have to work full time to compete instead of training full time, you get lousy players. Also importing a few pin pong player to play and win medals is easier.
Look at South Korea. There's tons of SK players in Europe. Quite a few of them already did their military service and went to Europe in their mid 20s. Going to military service did not hinder their progress one bit. Even Son Heung Min did his for three weeks despite having an exemption because he won a gold medal for South Korea.
I'm still unable to understand why Sg can't be more flexible when it comes to NS for these players. Just let them serve at a later age like Kr. I don't even mind if they serve after they retire from football in their early/mid 30s. I believe a mid 30s professional player will still be fitter than your average teenage recruit.
even if you are a talented singaporean junior footballer overseas, and playing at the barcelona academy, debuting at the age of 16 in the camp nou stadium, your career will still be wrecked because of 2 years national service. The best Singapore can do is hand out passports to 25 Brasilians who never played for their national team and hope to qualify for world cup.

It's a mindset that we in Singapore that we have is academic excellence and not sports excellence especially in team sports. All we want is individual sports excellence , that's why team sports are so neglected

Football is the most watched sport in the world. If you wanna put Singapore on the map in terms of sporting achievements, there is no doubt that this is the sport to invest in. The question is how serious the government is (this time round) to push for WC qualification? Past failures has shown that Singapore's attitude towards any sports is one where they try to invest as little resources as possible and hope to achieve the maximum outcome. To put it in other words its to "hope for the best". The argument that Singapore should consider "developing other sports that Singapore might excel in..." is flawed imo. How would we predict which sport we would excel in? Based on past results? Or targeting sports with a large pool of foreign talents readily available to be naturalised again? If we are talking about priviledged; individualistic sports such as archery, bowling, golf etc, then i would argue that in order for one to be able to partake in these sports, one would already have adequate financial resources. Futhermore, the pool of talents in these areas to choose from would be small, since the barrier to entry for these sports is high. I feel we should focus on a sport which Singaporeans has the most interest in. (Do a census or something.) This way we would have a greater pool of talents to choose from, and its also easier to rope in people who actually like the sport, but are sitting on the fence due to the lack of current career prospect.

I think Singapore doesn't take advantage of the European clubs coming to play in your stadium during their Asian tours. Japan and UAE hosted so many Club World Cup events and they saw advantage in it, that's why they're consistent at least in Asian stage. Singapore must do what those countries do to promote football and hopefully can talk much in Asian stage.
The biggest hinderance is NS. We gotta to revamp how national athletes serve. They are already serving the nation by representing it. We should look at how South Korea does it. Son Hueng Min went for basic military for a few months.
The biggest problem is that there is no joined up thinking or coordination between the school system, the clubs FAS, and Min Defence. 1.There are lots of good fields in the schools but they are locked up every weekend and not available for kids to have a kickabout. 2. FAS is totally powerless to do anything and have not contributed anything positive to Singapore football for many years. They are a bunch of amateurs. 3. Once a decent player makes it through the club academy there is no coordinated strategy of how to assist them thru their National Service commitments. So they miss 4-6month navigating BMT and then arranging any release from their unit to get permission to play football. Then they might have full duties and miss training and matches. No-one is looking at the big picture and thinking of solutions. A- open some school fields in each neighbourhood to use FOC for local kids to play. B- arrange any national sportsmen (whatever sport) to have, say, light duties 9am-3pm so they have some time in the day to dedicate to their sport. C- hold FAS accountable- what is their 5 year plan with yearly and quarterly milestones?. Most office holders are just talking cock and shaking leg... not producing any results. D- age group coaches at U14 to U18 to watch more schools matches and scout for new players. Some boys at the Sports School get too complacent. We need more competition for places. Install a national scouting database like they have in other countries like Holland and USA to track all players progress.
Football is well loved in Singapore but at the end of the day, no one wants to go all out to be a pro footballer, that is why it isn't well developed. We cant even beat Indonesia and Laos who we used to dominate We cant even beat Taiwan whose people are more focused on baseball and basketball. We cant even beat Guam whose population is like what, so much smaller than ours. We even lost to a Japan university team. Our people are just too focused on academic results and specialised jobs instead of doing career in sports. Don't say world cup, we are already struggling in SEA games. All the instagram posts are about 'hard fought draws', 'great fight from Lions', 'unlucky Lions', etc. But I do really like the employment of Japanese coaches because Japan can really play good passing football and they are brave to stay in this brand of football even up against stronger opponents. I did see improvement in our players but well this passing and possession football need to start from young. Hope we can build a strong team of youngsters to compete in SEA again. At least we are no longer resorting to useless long balls.
Last time we had Thai national players (Kiatisuk, surachai etc) and Iranian (Hamid Reza, Kharpour) World cup players playing in the SLeague, now, we have to go Thailand for example, to play in League 2. We are lacking behind eversince.
When selection is based on merits, only then can we make talk about making it to the World Cup. Now, you need an uncle or a famous father to get into the team.
I grew up with even more idiotic selection processes. For school selection, the coach (fucking ironic was the uncle of one of the playere) set a selection process by physical fitness. Which doesnt sound bad, but, the fitness he looked at, was pull ups. The guys who do the most pull ups, start first, the rest on the bench. There was more stupid thing involved but im not surprised the country hasnt gone far in football

A Vietnamese here. Wanna share some with you guys. First, I’m pretty sure that the problem is not with Singapore’s population. It may look small, but if you nurture them good enough you can still put up a decent team with homegrown. Which you used to do in the 90s (Tiger Cup 98 never forget). Secondly, you are clearly lacking grassroot capabilities. No,I’m not talking about stadiums. With that amount of land area having that much stadiums is impressive. I’m talking about the coaches level in general. P.E. teachers are most of the times chosen to be the school’s football team manager. The problem is, most of them is not even paid properly and are just glorified janitor. There’s also not much coaching courses offer to them. Which didn’t quite help Singaporean youngsters at school, where they spent most of their times, even if they choose football they get coached by Sunday League level manager. Which led to terrible youngsters. And as building a high-level youth academy in Singapore is not quite practically possible, building youngsters from schools seem the most possible for Singapore. Thirdly, S-League can’t even serve the main objective of a domestic league system properly: to develop local football. They can spent money helping an developmental Japanese side, a Bruneian royal team and a shambolic failure of a football academy attend the league, but not the local teams with actual fans. How can a league that pick foreign clubs over local clubs improve local football standard? Unbelievable. Finally, the FAS. The goddamn FAS. They make our VFF look like angels. I wonder if they have even kick a ball before. Yet they pick unrealistic goal.
Our leaders only want quick result, thus the importing of China players in Ping Pong. if Top tiers ready made players from Europe say they want to play for SG, our G will straight away get 100of millions to get him to play and claim credit like they nurture him from young.

J League had a lot of support and most importantly, tons of FAN SUPPORT. You'll also need a lot of money, i.e. sponsorships; Japan has lots of the conglomerates putting money in and I doubt companies here would do much.

Its the fact that we’re playing against the big teams in Malaysia while only having a full Sgrean squad that made me feel like I had a belonging both in Football and the country. Its the fact that there is a friendly but historic rivalry with our Causeway country that made me love football here but it’s all gone now.
One only needs to look at Joseph Schooling to understand why. Only a titan achievement of his allowed the deferment, and short it was. To qualify for the world cup, you need at least 11 Fandis to be born in the same era, pray to heavens their parents all send them elsewhere for training like Europe, pray all of them don't give up citizenship, and pray and hope all of them miraculously win some competition in ASIA. Then the ball can roll, and the whole team will have hope to defer and hopefully train and be better. Any misstep is back to army and poof goes world cup dreams. Size is an excuse, see Slovenia. NS see South Korea and their deferment age till 30. Reality is, I have more hopes of striking Toto than Singapore even qualifying for world cup. When we can even beat Vietnam and Thailand clean and fair and consistent in SEA games then let us talk. When our priority is clearing land for more housing for more humans for more GDP growth at all cost, I think team sports like soccer will never be a priority.
we can consider model after japan success at its domestic league. of course with some tweak due to certain culture differences. its good to set goal and being ambitious, but it takes a while to change the people mindset as well.
We need a complete overhaul… too many of these so called junior coaches have hidden agendas like securing school team contracts… another bunch are just egomaniacs and yes, the kid will have a great chance of making the team as long as the dad is an ex player or is bros with the coach… look at all the age group results, more than 90% losses and we are losing to teams like Cambodia, Timor Leste, Laos… forget the Thailands and Vietnams… we are at least 3 generations behind now…

In Singapore we need to do many things at once example if you are a professional athlete in Singapore morning you go to school evening you will have your football training and some even have part time job and then your NS come lol . But in many other countries if they are footballers they just need to concentrate on football that’s all .
When I was playing youth level there were players that were just unbelievable at football, but with the then $30 coe allowance what a joke alot of players dropped out went to vice cus they had to survive Singapore isn't a cheap country, imagine I put the energy I put into football to start a business or work gamble invest,. 1) Children in big footballing nations like England see football as an actual career choice. Football is make or break for them, they dedicate their entire livelihood to football. Us Singaporeans are more focused on school and education, football is a side gig for us. 2) Singaporeans have it too good, and that’s not a bad thing, most Singaporeans are financially stable or at least live in HDBs. Most of the top players come from poor backgrounds, living in slums and rural areas. Football was their only choice to get their family out of poverty, leading to there being a drive to succeed, which is something that Singapore doesn’t have. Just some other points: First of all, NS. Second of all, lack of interest in the local league. As a Singaporean who loves football, I have never and probably will never watch the SPL. It only has 8 teams and while I am inexperienced in the SPL it probably has the footballing quality of the National League in England. Why watch the local league and not any of the popular leagues, EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga? Last of all, we prioritise school over sports, which isn’t bad thing but it has some issues. I had a friend who was the star player on my school basketball team (not football but same rule applies) who got into the Zonal Final, coincidentally he came to school late that day and since he had come to school late two times in the past month, he had to stay back after school to clean the toilets. Long story short, he didn’t get to play the final and we lost.

1st thing is to invest in SPL with sustainable money. Facilities also another factor. Without proper facilities and right world class coach to help them, how they qualify world cup? Even now ASEAN cup also hard to achieve.
I think football in east asia is just a disappointment. Not counting the middle east and Oceana, the only asian teams that made it to the world cup were always japan and korea. Even china a big country struggling to qualify.
Cannot lah. In SG every kid need educational cert to atleast survive with a roof and food😂 Dnt matter what is your talent. Sports? Arts? Music? Throw away your dreams. Get that Cert.
Also while it is good for local players to ply their trade aboard, I'd rather see them playing in leagues like Japan/Korea's 2nd tier or even 3rd tier, or 3rd/4th tier of Europe top 5 league systems or 2nd tier of 'weaker' European leagues like Portugal, Holland etc than the leagues in our neighbouring countries.
Even if SG has the greatest coaches and facilities, our local footballers still won't help the country qualify for WC....we need immigrants from Europe/South America/Africa to play in our national team in order to go far
Instead of coming up with Lions12 nonsense. FAS/Govt should get big corporation to adopt a club each for long term. Sign those Marquee Players like J League back then and also like US Major League now. This will bring the fans back, this will help the local SPL, the national team and also keep some national players here. Bringing in thosebforeign teams can bring you so far.
Maybe players (and their family members) can explore opportunities to train with more established academies. Read about the journey of Japanese international player - Kazuyoshi Miura. He searched for opportunities further afield and returned to help them develop.
1) No sporting culture (compare our attendance to local games at a varsity / professional level vs overseas) i.e. people just don't care about local sports 2) First contact of sports is in school with teachers in charge of CCAs who could care less about the bigger picture / whether they are grooming the next superstar. These teachers also usually do not play the sport and are 'arrowed' to teach that CCA. They do not have a passion to actually coach. 3) Sports not being a viable career path 4) no safety net if sport career fails 5) focus on education / cost of living 6) small land mass - if a kid wants to train football over the weekend they have to book a court, even if it's in their own school (which will probably be used by adult weekend warriors) 7) National Service
we need either 11 Fandis in the starting 11 or find a truckload of players with SG heritage, naturalise them to don the Reds then we may have some miracle chance to move up from current status of Asean San Marino to Asean Italy.
As a Vietnamese, I think this problem is rooted to all SEA countries besides Thailand, who I think only underachieved this past few years to not qualify in the 3rd round qualifying of the World Cup last year due to losing key games, they clearly have enough power to even beat Vietnam and be the team in the 3rd round qualifying. The problem of the entire SEA and how they can't get to the world cup with their national team boils down to grass roots being very very terrible for every single team in SEA to the point where there will never be a clear path to becoming a pro footballer. Adding to that, the Eastern culture for the most part care only for your academic grades, and so football will never be considered as a job that is either lucrative or even secure.
There is a saying in Vietnam these days: “Thailand is the king at ASEAN, Vietnam is the leader of ASEAN in continental level and Indonesia is a joke that both of them laugh at.” . At funny as it is, Thailand did perform better when they are at the upper hand, while Vietnam perform better when we are the underdog. Every Vietnam’s manager except for Calisto make the deadly mistake of trying to get the upper hand against Thailand, we can’t really blame them though as the fans always want to stomp Thailand after all these humiliation for years. We are clearly not built for it even on history. However when it comes to continental competitions, where we are definitely the underdog, we play like an underdog and hit stronger teams. Most Thailand’s manager in this era, on the other hand, make the deadly mistake of not playing like an underdog against Asian powerhouse. In Southeast Asia, where they are clearly better than most of the teams there, their playstyle would work. The other teams, they don’t even have an established playstyle like Vietnam or Thailand, why even bother?
I won't be the least surprised if the best players we have today is either a CEO, a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, or IT manager or professor in one of our universities etc. But they are what they are in their respective professions and are not professional footballers in one of our local clubs for obvious reasons. And I won't be the least surprised if someone is able to mobilise a team from these various professions to take on the national team, and beat them. The best players we have are not those in the national team. To have the best team we can possibly have, we must be able to attract them to take up professional soccer as a career. And in the context of Singapore, that is a non-starter. It is the same problem we have with culinary skills. The best cooks are not those already running a food stall or working in a kitchen in our hotels and restaurants. The best cooks are those who will occasionally put on an apron to cook for friends and relatives at home for leisure, recreation and entertainment. To cook for fun and personal gratification is one thing. To cook for a living is something else. And which these freelance cooks are not prepared to do.
Don't waste time ah. Ur NS eats away the most crucial developmental period of a youth player's growth. What more our work/study first system strangles and asphyxiates the life out of individuals here Japanese companies have a system of sports and work balance system for those who aspire to continue their craft/discipline and would give time off to train whilst working. We don't even have say, our SPF/SAF/SCDF having a system whereby the athletes can sign on to balance both. In the very first place, the government doesn't give two hoots about supporting sport UNTIL absolute results happens (Schooling great example) and then oh let's jump on the bandwagon It is just so sad to see all the potential talents fizzle away into oblivion

As of June 2023. There are about 561330 Malays, 374860 Indians, 3072310 Chinese and 140750 others in Singapore. I know what u want to say. It's inrelevant. The team now make up more than 90% Malays and indians from a pool of 930+k people. Barely 30% of the Chinese population. I love football from a young age. All my peers play basketball so I go training alone. The football coach spoke in malays and players racism play a big part. Malay always think chinese as more inferior compare to them but did we beat china? I believe most Chinese boys love football had the same treatment. I know there are Chinese players in sg squad but even the most well known spend most time on the bench. You have a pool of potential talent in that 3mil pool but malays players and coaches didn't show class as majority. I always loved football the most. I was forced to switch to a more Chinese cca, basketball to represent my school. I just play for fun as I didn't really interested. When Chinese go for football training. unless we speak Malay if not it feel more like a quarantine than a group training. It's ok if Singapore did badly. After all which country ever succeed when the majority race didn't even care for it. You can replace the Chinese players with foreigners. Look at previous record and you will know. Yes most legends are malays, bcos you guys nv fully dig up that 3million pool of potential Chinese players. Want to win in asian competition? World cup? There must not be more than 40% malays and indian and not more than 50% in the starting 11. We have about a little more than 4mil local real citizen in sg. How you want to get sponsor when 3mil not even interested? Let say now we start to groom the 3mil Chinese local players the same way how now the players were treated without racism and biased. In 20-25 years later. Malay player will not exceed 10% in national squad. You guys got a chance bcos Chinese don't want to be bullied. Still don't understand? You want to win something? No more than 4 malays in the starting lineup and no Malay only language in the team. I been call cheena babi so many time bcos they think I don't understand. You guys is wasting that 3mil pool of Chinese talent. fyi Malaysia came in 2nd for the most racist country in the world. You guys know what you're capable of. Lastly those Malay encik coaches，you know why you got the job? Bcos no Chinese want a salary of 2k, otherwise you more likely to be security guard. As a Chinese majority in sg, we're often taught to give in to Malays and practice racial harmony. You ever tried hanging out in school with malays. They behave properly when they alone. In the dress room my clean shirt all was thrown over the place. School shoe lost and have to wear my boots home. I cannot imagine if Chinese is the minority. Sick.
should ask why Uruguay with smaller population and lower GDP per capita than Singapore can qualify regularly for the World Cup. Not all the time but regularly when they have to face top notch South American football nations in qualifiers. We talk a lot about local clubs in the local leagues but that it not the answer because unfortunately Singapore's population is too small. Not enough fans to fill the stadiums and the amount that sponsors have to spend (ie extremely high cost of living) doesn't commensurate with the publicity they get from a small market. Singapore should focus on the development of football players from young to a level that they can play professional level in top European leagues. Most of time that is where the top Uruguayan players end up. So the number one priority is hire several top level YOUTH coaches. Let's face it, our local coaches are nowhere on the world stage. Extremely difficult. Even countries with more than 1.4 billion people and no National Service like India and China cannot qualify and you expect Singapore to be able to do so. China literally spends way more than Singapore on its sports programs too. When you have individual sports, every now and then with a bit of luck, you get a genetic freak who goes and breaks the Olympic record in an event like Joseph Schooling did. But the chance of simultaneously having like 20+ (11 starters + substitutes and reserves) genetic freaks at one go is impossible. We don't have the culture. We don't have the financial incentives (salary relative to living cost). We have NS. We have a ridiculously small population (though this is actually less of a problem since Iceland qualified with a population of 334 thousand, but India and China can't with 4230 times the population, which is unfathomable to even comprehend).
You can't play football in our climate easily... Maybe only in the evenings, and we don't have enough land for football pitches. Better to focus on sports like badminton. Or just save the money and give to the lower income and people who really need it.
I was a Thai ex-pat that had worked in Singapore for 10 years. I follow local football regularly and went to watch SPL and SG's NT matches from time to time. The first time I arrived in Singapore 10 years ago, I was dumbfounded that none of the clubs and even the league were privatized. It makes no sense as a Thai since we believe SG is more business mind than us. We privatized the league and all the clubs in 2009 and look what the Thai League has become. Thai League is now in the top 4 of East Asia according to the latest ranking from the AFC. Meanwhile, SPL (former S League) who was the number one league in SEA is ranked lower than Myanmar. And to this day, only LCS is a private club in the league. What an irony.
When no one owns the league or club, no one cares about their performance. The clubs will participate in the tournament just for the sake of participation. They don't care where they rank because that won't affect them in any way. The same goes for the league. Why bother making the league more profitable when it won't affect their KPI? That is how the Thai League managed to cull away amateur clubs. If Singapore wants to improve, just needs to start by privatizing the league and I guarantee you will see a huge difference.
I agree, if someone like a Sky bought the league it would be much more exciting and aspirational for people within the country. The first person/business to buy a SPL club will dominate for a long time.

I agree with the point about footballing culture, many people have their careers hindered by academic results and NS. I've had classmates who were barred from playing in competitions due to poor grades even if they are the teams star player, the priority on grades instead of development in football is also a result of the aforementioned lack of job security.
I feel that NS is also a major factor, the age we go into NS is prime development years for a football player, look at how many players in Europe's top leagues made their debuts in their late teens, or in their early 20s, CR7, Messi, Mbappe, Rashford, Becks, Lampard and many others. Look at Ben Davies, who got signed by Fullham, who jumped ship to Thailand because of NS.

When you have to work full time to compete instead of training full time, you get lousy players. Also importing a few pin pong player to play and win medals is easier.
Look at South Korea. There's tons of SK players in Europe. Quite a few of them already did their military service and went to Europe in their mid 20s. Going to military service did not hinder their progress one bit. Even Son Heung Min did his for three weeks despite having an exemption because he won a gold medal for South Korea.
I'm still unable to understand why Sg can't be more flexible when it comes to NS for these players. Just let them serve at a later age like Kr. I don't even mind if they serve after they retire from football in their early/mid 30s. I believe a mid 30s professional player will still be fitter than your average teenage recruit.
even if you are a talented singaporean junior footballer overseas, and playing at the barcelona academy, debuting at the age of 16 in the camp nou stadium, your career will still be wrecked because of 2 years national service. The best Singapore can do is hand out passports to 25 Brasilians who never played for their national team and hope to qualify for world cup.

Football is the most watched sport in the world. If you wanna put Singapore on the map in terms of sporting achievements, there is no doubt that this is the sport to invest in. The question is how serious the government is (this time round) to push for WC qualification? Past failures has shown that Singapore's attitude towards any sports is one where they try to invest as little resources as possible and hope to achieve the maximum outcome. To put it in other words its to "hope for the best".
The argument that Singapore should consider "developing other sports that Singapore might excel in..." is flawed imo. How would we predict which sport we would excel in? Based on past results? Or targeting sports with a large pool of foreign talents readily available to be naturalised again? If we are talking about priviledged; individualistic sports such as archery, bowling, golf etc, then i would argue that in order for one to be able to partake in these sports, one would already have adequate financial resources. Futhermore, the pool of talents in these areas to choose from would be small, since the barrier to entry for these sports is high.
I feel we should focus on a sport which Singaporeans has the most interest in. (Do a census or something.) This way we would have a greater pool of talents to choose from, and its also easier to rope in people who actually like the sport, but are sitting on the fence due to the lack of current career prospect.

I think Singapore doesn't take advantage of the European clubs coming to play in your stadium during their Asian tours. Japan and UAE hosted so many Club World Cup events and they saw advantage in it, that's why they're consistent at least in Asian stage. Singapore must do what those countries do to promote football and hopefully can talk much in Asian stage.
The biggest hinderance is NS. We gotta to revamp how national athletes serve. They are already serving the nation by representing it. We should look at how South Korea does it. Son Hueng Min went for basic military for a few months.
The biggest problem is that there is no joined up thinking or coordination between the school system, the clubs FAS, and Min Defence.
1.There are lots of good fields in the schools but they are locked up every weekend and not available for kids to have a kickabout.
2. FAS is totally powerless to do anything and have not contributed anything positive to Singapore football for many years. They are a bunch of amateurs.
3. Once a decent player makes it through the club academy there is no coordinated strategy of how to assist them thru their National Service commitments. So they miss 4-6month navigating BMT and then arranging any release from their unit to get permission to play football. Then they might have full duties and miss training and matches.
No-one is looking at the big picture and thinking of solutions.
A- open some school fields in each neighbourhood to use FOC for local kids to play.
B- arrange any national sportsmen (whatever sport) to have, say, light duties 9am-3pm so they have some time in the day to dedicate to their sport.
C- hold FAS accountable- what is their 5 year plan with yearly and quarterly milestones?. Most office holders are just talking cock and shaking leg... not producing any results.
D- age group coaches at U14 to U18 to watch more schools matches and scout for new players. Some boys at the Sports School get too complacent. We need more competition for places. Install a national scouting database like they have in other countries like Holland and USA to track all players progress.
Football is well loved in Singapore but at the end of the day, no one wants to go all out to be a pro footballer, that is why it isn't well developed. We cant even beat Indonesia and Laos who we used to dominate We cant even beat Taiwan whose people are more focused on baseball and basketball. We cant even beat Guam whose population is like what, so much smaller than ours. We even lost to a Japan university team. Our people are just too focused on academic results and specialised jobs instead of doing career in sports. Don't say world cup, we are already struggling in SEA games. All the instagram posts are about 'hard fought draws', 'great fight from Lions', 'unlucky Lions', etc.
But I do really like the employment of Japanese coaches because Japan can really play good passing football and they are brave to stay in this brand of football even up against stronger opponents. I did see improvement in our players but well this passing and possession football need to start from young. Hope we can build a strong team of youngsters to compete in SEA again. At least we are no longer resorting to useless long balls.
Last time we had Thai national players (Kiatisuk, surachai etc) and Iranian (Hamid Reza, Kharpour) World cup players playing in the SLeague, now, we have to go Thailand for example, to play in League 2. We are lacking behind eversince.
When selection is based on merits, only then can we make talk about making it to the World Cup. Now, you need an uncle or a famous father to get into the team.
I grew up with even more idiotic selection processes. For school selection, the coach (fucking ironic was the uncle of one of the playere) set a selection process by physical fitness. Which doesnt sound bad, but, the fitness he looked at, was pull ups. The guys who do the most pull ups, start first, the rest on the bench. There was more stupid thing involved but im not surprised the country hasnt gone far in football

A Vietnamese here. Wanna share some with you guys.
First, I’m pretty sure that the problem is not with Singapore’s population. It may look small, but if you nurture them good enough you can still put up a decent team with homegrown. Which you used to do in the 90s (Tiger Cup 98 never forget).
Secondly, you are clearly lacking grassroot capabilities. No,I’m not talking about stadiums. With that amount of land area having that much stadiums is impressive. I’m talking about the coaches level in general. P.E. teachers are most of the times chosen to be the school’s football team manager. The problem is, most of them is not even paid properly and are just glorified janitor. There’s also not much coaching courses offer to them. Which didn’t quite help Singaporean youngsters at school, where they spent most of their times, even if they choose football they get coached by Sunday League level manager. Which led to terrible youngsters. And as building a high-level youth academy in Singapore is not quite practically possible, building youngsters from schools seem the most possible for Singapore.
Thirdly, S-League can’t even serve the main objective of a domestic league system properly: to develop local football. They can spent money helping an developmental Japanese side, a Bruneian royal team and a shambolic failure of a football academy attend the league, but not the local teams with actual fans. How can a league that pick foreign clubs over local clubs improve local football standard? Unbelievable.
Finally, the FAS. The goddamn FAS. They make our VFF look like angels. I wonder if they have even kick a ball before. Yet they pick unrealistic goal.
Our leaders only want quick result, thus the importing of China players in Ping Pong. if Top tiers ready made players from Europe say they want to play for SG, our G will straight away get 100of millions to get him to play and claim credit like they nurture him from young.
Really don't see our SG football developing any further even our FAS president Bernard Tan not even in the football industry or field before he joined the FAS ( the FAS literally just hired some paper CEO to just come and manage and talk some nonsense about achieving this and that with no ideal and efficient goal, fyi if they really do care about SG football should have already started the Unleash the Roar project decades ago lol )

Its the fact that we’re playing against the big teams in Malaysia while only having a full Sgrean squad that made me feel like I had a belonging both in Football and the country. To qualify for the world cup, you need at least 11 Fandis to be born in the same era, pray to heavens their parents all send them elsewhere for training like Europe, pray all of them don't give up citizenship, and pray and hope all of them miraculously win some competition in ASIA. Then the ball can roll, and the whole team will have hope to defer and hopefully train and be better. Any misstep is back to army and poof goes world cup dreams. Size is an excuse, see Slovenia. NS see South Korea and their deferment age till 30. Reality is, I have more hopes of striking Toto than Singapore even qualifying for world cup. When we can even beat Vietnam and Thailand clean and fair and consistent in SEA games then let us talk. When our priority is clearing land for more housing for more humans for more GDP growth at all cost, I think team sports like soccer will never be a priority.

1) Children in big footballing nations like England see football as an actual career choice. Football is make or break for them, they dedicate their entire livelihood to football. Us Singaporeans are more focused on school and education, football is a side gig for us.
2) Singaporeans have it too good, and that’s not a bad thing, most Singaporeans are financially stable or at least live in HDBs. Most of the top players come from poor backgrounds, living in slums and rural areas. Football was their only choice to get their family out of poverty, leading to there being a drive to succeed, which is something that Singapore doesn’t have.
Just some other points:
First of all, NS. Second of all, lack of interest in the local league. As a Singaporean who loves football, I have never and probably will never watch the SPL. It only has 8 teams and while I am inexperienced in the SPL it probably has the footballing quality of the National League in England. Why watch the local league and not any of the popular leagues, EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga? Last of all, we prioritise school over sports, which isn’t bad thing but it has some issues. I had a friend who was the star player on my school basketball team (not football but same rule applies) who got into the Zonal Final, coincidentally he came to school late that day and since he had come to school late two times in the past month, he had to stay back after school to clean the toilets. Long story short, he didn’t get to play the final and we lost.

Also while it is good for local players to ply their trade aboard, I'd rather see them playing in leagues like Japan/Korea's 2nd tier or even 3rd tier, or 3rd/4th tier of Europe top 5 league systems or 2nd tier of 'weaker' European leagues like Portugal, Holland etc than the leagues in our neighbouring countries.

1) No sporting culture (compare our attendance to local games at a varsity / professional level vs overseas) i.e. people just don't care about local sports
2) First contact of sports is in school with teachers in charge of CCAs who could care less about the bigger picture / whether they are grooming the next superstar. These teachers also usually do not play the sport and are 'arrowed' to teach that CCA. They do not have a passion to actually coach.
3) Sports not being a viable career path
4) no safety net if sport career fails
5) focus on education / cost of living
6) small land mass - if a kid wants to train football over the weekend they have to book a court, even if it's in their own school (which will probably be used by adult weekend warriors)
7) National Service

As a Vietnamese, I think this problem is rooted to all SEA countries besides Thailand, who I think only underachieved this past few years to not qualify in the 3rd round qualifying of the World Cup last year due to losing key games, they clearly have enough power to even beat Vietnam and be the team in the 3rd round qualifying. The problem of the entire SEA and how they can't get to the world cup with their national team boils down to grass roots being very very terrible for every single team in SEA to the point where there will never be a clear path to becoming a pro footballer. Adding to that, the Eastern culture for the most part care only for your academic grades, and so football will never be considered as a job that is either lucrative or even secure.

There is a saying in Vietnam these days: “Thailand is the king at ASEAN, Vietnam is the leader of ASEAN in continental level and Indonesia is a joke that both of them laugh at.” . At funny as it is, Thailand did perform better when they are at the upper hand, while Vietnam perform better when we are the underdog. Every Vietnam’s manager except for Calisto make the deadly mistake of trying to get the upper hand against Thailand, we can’t really blame them though as the fans always want to stomp Thailand after all these humiliation for years. We are clearly not built for it even on history. However when it comes to continental competitions, where we are definitely the underdog, we play like an underdog and hit stronger teams. Most Thailand’s manager in this era, on the other hand, make the deadly mistake of not playing like an underdog against Asian powerhouse. In Southeast Asia, where they are clearly better than most of the teams there, their playstyle would work. The other teams, they don’t even have an established playstyle like Vietnam or Thailand, why even bother?

I won't be the least surprised if the best players we have today is either a CEO, a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, or IT manager or professor in one of our universities etc. But they are what they are in their respective professions and are not professional footballers in one of our local clubs for obvious reasons. And I won't be the least surprised if someone is able to mobilise a team from these various professions to take on the national team, and beat them. The best players we have are not those in the national team. To have the best team we can possibly have, we must be able to attract them to take up professional soccer as a career. And in the context of Singapore, that is a non-starter. It is the same problem we have with culinary skills. The best cooks are not those already running a food stall or working in a kitchen in our hotels and restaurants. The best cooks are those who will occasionally put on an apron to cook for friends and relatives at home for leisure, recreation and entertainment. To cook for fun and personal gratification is one thing. To cook for a living is something else. And which these freelance cooks are not prepared to do.

Japanese companies have a system of sports and work balance system for those who aspire to continue their craft/discipline and would give time off to train whilst working.
We don't even have say, our SPF/SAF/SCDF having a system whereby the athletes can sign on to balance both. In the very first place, the government doesn't give two hoots about supporting sport UNTIL absolute results happens (Schooling great example) and then oh let's jump on the bandwagon

The team now make up more than 90% Malays and indians from a pool of 930+k people. Barely 30% of the Chinese population. I love football from a young age. All my peers play basketball so I go training alone. The football coach spoke in malays and players racism play a big part. Malay always think chinese as more inferior compare to them but did we beat china? I believe most Chinese boys love football had the same treatment. I know there are Chinese players in sg squad but even the most well known spend most time on the bench. You have a pool of potential talent in that 3mil pool but malays players and coaches didn't show class as majority. I always loved football the most. I was forced to switch to a more Chinese cca, basketball to represent my school. I just play for fun as I didn't really interested. When Chinese go for football training. unless we speak Malay if not it feel more like a quarantine than a group training. It's ok if Singapore did badly. After all which country ever succeed when the majority race didn't even care for it. You can replace the Chinese players with foreigners. Look at previous record and you will know. Yes most legends are malays, bcos you guys nv fully dig up that 3million pool of potential Chinese players. Want to win in asian competition? World cup? There must not be more than 40% malays and indian and not more than 50% in the starting 11. We have about a little more than 4mil local real citizen in sg. How you want to get sponsor when 3mil not even interested?
Let say now we start to groom the 3mil Chinese local players the same way how now the players were treated without racism and biased. In 20-25 years later. Malay player will not exceed 10% in national squad. You guys got a chance bcos Chinese don't want to be bullied. Still don't understand?

As a Chinese majority in sg, we're often taught to give in to Malays and practice racial harmony. You ever tried hanging out in school with malays. They behave properly when they alone. When the gang come all suddenly power become dragon ball Goku. I nv forget I went to my first ever training in primary. Was boycotted already quite sad. In the dress room my clean shirt all was thrown over the place. School shoe lost and have to wear my boots home. I cannot imagine if Chinese is the minority. Sick.
should ask why Uruguay with smaller population and lower GDP per capita than Singapore can qualify regularly for the World Cup. Not all the time but regularly when they have to face top notch South American football nations in qualifiers. We talk a lot about local clubs in the local leagues but that it not the answer because unfortunately Singapore's population is too small. Not enough fans to fill the stadiums and the amount that sponsors have to spend (ie extremely high cost of living) doesn't commensurate with the publicity they get from a small market. Singapore should focus on the development of football players from young to a level that they can play professional level in top European leagues. Most of time that is where the top Uruguayan players end up. So the number one priority is hire several top level YOUTH coaches. Let's face it, our local coaches are nowhere on the world stage. They are not going to take our youth anywhere.

Let’s be honest, even with the unleash the roar, it’s isn’t enough to be even an Asian power house. Look at the stadiums, field, equipment, infrastructure. FAS and the government can’t be bothered to upgrade them and yet still dare talk about 2034. Even 2010 World Cup vision was a failure.

SE Asians don't have the genes for football.Only 2 players from SE Asia made it to European ldg.Fandi and Lim Tiong Kim. I would include Sundram if Swiss lgd was top 10 lgd.We don't have the DNA for football.Fandi survived purely on skill,will power and 'Segamat'. Do not include the Dutch-Indo mixed players.
Extremely difficult. Even countries with more than 1.4 billion people and no National Service like India and China cannot qualify and you expect Singapore to be able to do so. China literally spends way more than Singapore on its sports programs too. When you have individual sports, every now and then with a bit of luck, you get a genetic freak who goes and breaks the Olympic record in an event like Joseph Schooling did. But the chance of simultaneously having like 20+ (11 starters + substitutes and reserves) genetic freaks at one go is impossible. We don't have the culture. We don't have the financial incentives (salary relative to living cost). We have NS. We have a ridiculously small population (though this is actually less of a problem since Iceland qualified with a population of 334 thousand, but India and China can't with 4230 times the population, which is unfathomable to even comprehend).
So Japan has 20+ genetic freaks all the time? its the system in China that failed. In india, there is no interest in Sports other than crickets.

Why can't Singapore make it to the World Cup is because ping pong is easier to win medals.
You can't play football in our climate easily... Maybe only in the evenings, and we don't have enough land for football pitches. Better to focus on sports like badminton.
Or just save the money and give to the lower income and people who really need it.
