“Math isn’t a process, but rather a toolbox.” This really stuck out because it takes the stigma away from math itself which can sometimes be overwhelming.
If you're like me, it could be that you don't learn math like you do other subjects. When I was in school, I excelled at everything except for math. I couldn't do much about it then -- due to lack of technological resources and time. Years later, when I had access to resources and time, I was able to learn, through research, that I'm a visual and conceptual math learner, best served by video. I, for instance, needed to be introduced to the Distributive Property before the standard algorithm of multiplication. Once I understand the mathematical logic and concepts behind what I'm doing, my brain automatically makes connections to the various algorithms one could use to solve a particular kind of problem. I'm also the person that adds to solve a subtraction problem and sees division through the lens of multiplication. Once I figured out how I learned math (and started from the beginning), it became much easier. My brain basically views math as a language (of numbers) -- no different from a traditional spoken or gestural language or even computer language. To me, it's all the same thing.
