Godox FINALLY fixed this flash issue for Sony cameras

  • Godox has updated their on-camera flash photography products to have a metal hot shoe instead of a plastic one. This affects products such as the V1, V860II, V850II, V860III, V850III, and V350 speedlights, as well as X1T-S, X2T-S, and XPro-S triggers. The plastic shoe has been a pain point for Godox products for years, as it is extremely fragile. Even light contact with the side of a speedlight can create enough leverage to break a Sony hot shoe, forcing many users to replace them. Even if you are careful, the plastic hot shoe can loosen over time leading to a wiggly flash.
    This update also resolves the tightness issue of Godox speedlights / triggers on their newest cameras, the A1 and A7IV. These products have a shorter hot shoe height (to fix a problem with native Sony flashes), making the existing Godox gear very difficult to get on and off.
    At the end of this video I stated "I feel that Godox will replace this on all Sony products" as when I recorded this there was no certainty. I have since confirmed this directly with Godox.

    Thank you for the video. I bought the V1-S less than a month ago, and it broke on the second use. I sent it for repairs, and they had the audacity to say that this issue has never happened with them and that I used it incorrectly. I am very careful with my equipment, and your video brought me relief by knowing that I didn't make a mistake and that yes, it's a design problem.
    I just bought the shoe mount, and I hope that now I won't have any more problems.

    Thanks for sharing this Robert. I ordered one directly via Amazon here in Europe - not just as cheap as from Asia, but available within a few days for my V860IIS (yes, correct - for version 2 of the flash). I received and mounted it yesterday and - tadaaa - it works. Godox may have changed some dimensions between version II and version III. Therefore it does not fit absolut exactly to the outer shell of the casing (1,5 mm in the line of the mold release), but the 4 screws and the cable connection fit exactly. And finally the most important - it works (and gives me a much more solid feeling during the usage).

    Nice video! Just a quick tip from someone thats learned a ton from your videos and has done a bit of electronic repairs in the past. When you put the ribbon cable in, those gray things on the side are the locking mechanism. It needs to be slid down before sliding the cable in/out. The cable should go in easily without any resistance. Then once it’s in you need to lock it by sliding the gray tabs again to keep the cable from coming out. If you lightly tug the cable, it should be snug and tight.

    • @kifley19
      @kifley19 Рік тому +1

      The Grey tabs were already down on mine. I lifted them up to release the cable and then lowered once to secure the new one. I'm not sure if I did right but it seemed to work.

    You are a savior! I have a Flashpoint version that broke years ago. Replaced it with another plastic shoe recently. Now I need to get the upgraded shoe ASAP! I was going to sell it and continue on with the Sony Flashes, which are only good for the video light, honestly and suck with the autofocus when using that light as an AF light. I found the Flashpoint worked better with AF. Something with the timing caused a single point AF shot to always be out of focus with the Sony Flashes. Sony needs to really adjust their system in their next iteration if they expect people to fully be on board. The functionality is lacking, especially when I compare to how well my Canon Flashes worked. I've also broken a few of the Sony hot shoe mounts because a part of it is still plastic, but reinforced with some metal at least to make it last a year doing events. Now I have to hand hold it on a radio trigger if I want to use it, but there's no AF beam when I do! The replacement shoe, which I'm glad that Sony supplies for self repair, is over 100 bucks! I miss the IR AF focus beam on Canon. It worked way better and it was way less intrusive while working events! I really hope Flashpoint/Godox is going to be my brand going forward. I put my Flashes through the ringer and the reinforced metal is going to save me a lot of money and time! I only need the one on camera flash and get the higher powered flashes for off camera stuff!

    Hot tip. You mentioned inserting the data ribbon into the slot on the flash, being a PITA. If you notice the two circular punch-outs just below the end of the ribbon... Get a spanner wrench or a needle-nose tweezers and stretch the tweezer ends wider until the ends of the tweezers will fit into the punch-outs on the ribbon. Gently push into the flash-end, initially with a gentle up-and-back wiggle and it'll go in easier than trying to grip with a big pair of male fingers! To ensure a nice tight fit, I was also able to take a slightly wider set of tweezers and "gently", grab the ribbon-end and push a bit stronger into the slot on the flash. Can't overdo this to avoid crimping the very-thin ribbon.

    • @mikegrok

      That is a zif socket, ie Zero Insertion Force. The socket is white, on either side of the socket are a pair of darker gray sections. Pull the darker gray sections towards you with your finger nails, or a hooked piece of metal. Now the cable can be removed, and the new cable inserted. When you are done, push the darker gray sections to secure the cable and proceed with reassembly.

    Hi, Robert , thanks for your great videos, after exchanging all of my godox and flashpoint hotshoe flashes (3) I started to see that the Sony a7iv hotshoe get loose, I sent the camera to repair, after a month it came back and the issue only last a week , do you know how to tight it back again, it causing connection issues. and this is not the flashes since I used them with the a9II way before with no issues. I think it is a big problem with this camera and the hotshoe.
    any help will be appreciated, thanks

    On my a74, with the metal shoe, the contact isn’t that good… I lose flash connection when I shoot in portrait mode. Not sure if it’s only my a74’s hotshoe that is lose or it’s that way for everyone.

    Just another hint: There are two small holes on the flexible contact stripe. These are there in order to put in e.g. small tweezers and you can pull out and in the contact much better than with the hand.

    Great video ROB! I have a little off topic question: in very very dim light ambient, how do u get 100% focus on the right sobject? I'm having trouble in clubs etc due to the lack of assist beam i used to have on a previus DLSR.
    Thank you so much! 😊

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  Рік тому

      I personally haven't really struggled with this using Sony cameras. I remember on the A7III there were a few times in dim lighting where the subject had significant backlighting, so the camera couldn't brighten the subject enough to gain focus. I simply toggled manual focus, which automatically had peaking on, and then easily manually focused. Beyond that I really haven't had a scenario where autofocus wasn't a breeze in a years.
      You also don't have a lack of an assist beam. You just need to set it up the same way dSLRs use them. Center focus or point near center. AF-S. AF assist on in settings and on speedlight.
      People assume this doesn't work on mirrorless but they are wrong.

    I'm a professional wedding photographer and have new Sony A7IV and purchased new Godox V350s also Godox 860iiis and they both are inconsistent in light output when used in ttl mode on flash regardless of recycle time ready or battery charge etc and it's same composition with same lighting scenarios. My camera settings is on manual and I tried rear sync, fill flash and it's no fix. Sometimes it produces very powerful light output and sometimes under exposed.
    Is this a brand compatibility issue Godox with Sony? Is there any settings I need to do?

    In addition to having a Godox system for travel, I use Alien Bees in the studio with old Pocket Wizards. I broke a Godox trigger when I first got my A74 and just assumed it was wear and tear from using the trigger for so long. With the PWs, they work seamlessly on my A73 but miss the connection on the A74 randomly. I'm constantly pushing them during a shoot in to reconnect. I'm hesitant to purchase new PWs since I have no idea whether this will fix the problem or not. Thank you for the only place I've found the information about the A74 being the problem. I have already purchased a new Godox trigger (still has the plastic connector) but I'll invest in a new one when I can. With the PWs, though, I'm not sure what to do. If anyone has any info to share about how to trigger ABs with an A74 and the new tighter, metal connections, I'd love to hear it. TY.

    My V1-S hotshot cracked and than the whole locking mechanize just cracked right after it during a shoot few days ago. I have countless Godox products include V1-F that I have for four years without any issues but this is the worst of all. The XT2-S is very tight and I hope they will produce the metal mount for it as well.

    I did took you advise and toughened 4 black screws inside. No wiggle on the hot shoe anymore, bravo! But then I locked the flash on the camera and couldn't take it off later, because 2 small plastic pins, which secure the flash, wouldn't go back at all!!! Pls try yourself to unscrew hot-shoe segment, which facing the camera. It took me almost an hour.

You need a suitable screwdriver, nippers and a little ingenuity))) I assume that you can install it on all Godox products that have plastic hot shoe
