In real life, using explosions in tunnels is incredibly dangerous and will shoot deadly shrapnel extremely far in both directions. It's basically a giant cannon. Amnesia situation should have been an unconventional game over screen at best.
Also, wouldnt it just collapse the tunnel? Even if you had plenty of hard cover, you'd just make it harder for yourself. Just crawl in there with some pliers.

Joe was a victim of his own poor understanding of TNT and chat, equally ignorant, backing him up. TNT is not nearly as volatile as he thinks it is and cannot, generally, be detonated by shooting it. This is a common mistake video games and movies make, but is not one based in reality.

Dynamite, once it has been fully manufactured, is rather difficult to make explode. The manufacturing process is obscenely dangerous (particularly in early days) and it can destabilize over the course of decades in storage, but as a general rule you do need more than just impact or heat to detonate it. You need both simultaneously, which is why it was used for so long.
Funny how both Metal Gear Solid and Half-Life came out within a couple of months of one another in 1998, and both feature this same sort of slow industrial diagonal elevator which has enemies coming down at you. Maybe inspired by a film from the era?
