Ryan Newman joins @TODAY to discuss Daytona 500 crash (FULL INTERVIEW) | Motorsports on NBC
/ motorsportsonnbc
1:33 "I feel 50-70% safer than I did last year"
Spoken like a true engineer.
There's been a lot of criticism of NASCAR for the way the cars look or whatever, but take a look at Ryan Newman, and take a look at the evolution of the vehicles we call stock cars.
It's not the looks, so much as the restrictions, poor repaving, and idiotic point rule changes every other season. Everyone I knew admitted that that was a lethal crash for even just 15 years ago.
@@654Crossman Well that, too. We're a college football channel, but we love us some NASCAR.
The one thing NASCAR has actually done right in the new age is the safety of the cars. They are very safe these days. Prior to the 2000s era, Ryan would have died in that crash.
Mark C it’s been 17 years. Get over the points change
The cars are made to take roll overs and high impact side crashes. But the way he was hit they’re not made for that. As good as they are it’s something like that, that shows the weak points. Being face down driver’s side first toward the oncoming car it doesn’t happen everyday. The only protection he had at that point besides his driver’s suite was the window net .
It’s only job is to hold the driver in the car. Not to hold back another 3400 pound race car running at near 200 miles per hour .
You did win. You are still here, you won your LIFE. Stay humble.
Well stated
@Frank Bigschlong Ryan Newman finished in ninth place.
@Frank Bigschlong You're quite welcome. Have a good day.
@Frank Bigschlong Sorry to hear that.
Very well said
This dude engineered around his own death.... Saved by the "Newman Bar"
@themetal as much as i agree with you had Earnhardt been using the Hans Devise he would had survived ! The Hans devise was being used by other drivers and Earnhardt refused to have it installed and use it . Terrible loss but one cannot complain about speed and then turn around and refuse to wear a safety devise that may have saved their life at those speeds !!!
@@7natcho he also was using the open face helmet, for what its worth... He was to "old school" and stubborn for the evolution of the sport.
Most likely the Petty and Earnhardt bars as well.
7natcho NASCAR should have made him safety should have never been optional it’s nascar’s fault
@@dom.rockchalkjayhawk.8990 Yes you do have a very good point and an argument that would be widely agreed upon in today's world and safety standards of today . Unfortunately when senior crashed things just were not that way and safety was viewed differently .
I honestly thought he had died when I saw it live
Thank God he didn't
AMEN ❤
Marine1775Preacher1611 American1776 Stop it with the conspiracy bs. They were racing but something went wrong. Simple as that...
I thought so too. The black curtains, ambulance instead of a chopper; it all looked ominous.
First thing I thought when I watched the replay was "Dammit, I just watched another driver die." So thankful that wasn't the case!
@@v73c i really thought he was gone, just by the way everyone was acting. Maybe they didnt know how bad, or in this case how minor , his injury was. He was knocked out so they might have thought it was much worse that it actually ended up being. Watched Sr. hit and didnt even think he woulda felt that hit but boy was wrong. Then watch others have a much worse looking impact and walk away is so crazy in this sport.
He's very intelligent and humble.
He's arguably the hardest to pass in NASCAR. This crash is a good example gone bad.
Hope to see you back in the #6 soon Ryan!
I hope he does come back
@@Doomedrpgthecozygamer99 He will
Arguably? Thought it was pretty unanimous that Newman was the hardest to pass 10 years ago lol
Someone said he is harder to pass than a kidney stone.
Wonder if he learned anything about blocking the faster car.
Thanks for always taking pictures with me and giving me autographs. You’re not only a great driver but a really nice person to be around which I can personally vouch for. It would have been a tragedy on so many levels to lose you.
Great comment!
I’ll be willing to say, not one of the ppl interviewing him never watch nascar
its a wonder that they didnt ask him whats it like working with Jerry, on Sienfeld
@@BarryAir But they LOVE the crashes.
Honestly. It's basically just good publicity to be the first organization to interview him after the crash haha.
I understand doing the talk show circuit but I wish his first interview had been with NASCAR folks. He may be obligated by contract with NBC. But even so, he could/should have done the interview on NASCAR America with Kyle Petty, Jeff Burton, etc.
That's my 2 cents.
Tony Barnett I agree, they interviewed him nicely but they don’t watch NASCAR. They said “number 6 car” if they watched they’d say “number 6 Ford Mustang” and they just said “racetrack” they didn’t say which track he visited. It’s be nice if it were with petty, burton, or Earnhardt I agree 100%
I wish Ryan well he’s a great driver
He’s has several very close calls at Daytona and Talladega over the years and has been a very vocal critic of the restrictor plate racing. He’s also an engineer which doesn’t make it any easier for him to get along with others.
Wayne Swicegood always liked how he carried himself.
Wally Morgan Oh I like him too. That was such a scary crash. What made it worse was how long it took to get him out of the car. I really thought he might be dead. I have seen a lot of accidents but this one took the longest time to get a driver out of his wrecked car then they hid him behind those screens. I really thought the worst. I’m so glad he’s fine.
Dee Marie Dubois I also thought he was dead
I would have bet on it
It looked like the worse hit I have seen in awhile. Worse looking than Dale SR.
He is one of the last "old school" racers left.
Him, Kurt, Jimmy, and Kevin pretty much
Well now its just him, Kurt and Harvick
@@GraveDigger35 But its only a matter of time before they go
Pretty sad, bit let's not forget that in 2002 those guys were considered young guns while guys like Wallace and Jarrett were hanging it up.
i miss jeff gordon
Ryan Newman is just totally a class act
Besides the BS he pulled on Larson at Phoenix, he ALWAYS has been ...
protect your 2nd
He should quit while he is ahead
Something Dale Earnhardt didn’t do either
Ryan is my favorite driver. He definitely had angels watching over him. He also doesn't take anyones bs. He will call you out after a race if you screwed up and raced like a moron. Hope to see you back in your #6 racecar soon bro!
Exactly what I want in my driver. After the wreck, I grabbed my '08 die cast car and put it on my desk. (His Daytona winning car) First time out of the box in a long time. I didn't pray to it or anything. But just to send good thoughts to Ryan and all. I won't say I wasn't thinking the worst. Good to be wrong!
He's the "moron" that caused the wreck you moron!
Honestly I don't have much respect for the guy since he made a joke out of all the stuff Tony Stewart went thru when he hit that Ward kid but I'm glad he wasn't killed. I wouldn't wish that on any of these drivers regardless of personal opinion
I been a fan since he been in the altell dodge. He has always been my favorite driver too.
@@edimilner1 you’re the “moron” here. Hamlin pushed Blaney which caused the crash 💥 “moron”.
He is such a testament to the true safety of these cars. So many improvements have been made since Dale Earnhardt died in 2001. There have been ZERO deaths and (other than a few broken bones) no near-death crashes either. One of those innovations was moving the driver’s seat several inches towards the center of the vehicle. Lord knows if he would have survived had this not been mandated.
Zero in Cup.
Zero in the top three series but 6 in lower series, such as Whelen Modifieds.
Ethan Weeter I believe (but I could be wrong) HANS did exist and was available in the 2000 season, but was optional. After Earnhardt died, it became mandatory.
Ethan Weeter There’s no way Earnhardt would’ve worn it unless it was mandatory. Comfort was priority for Earnhardt. His seats were custom made. But yes, I do remember safer barriers being tested and installed at other tracks prior to 2001.
What folks forget is the months before Earnhardt, there were two deaths in NASCAR. Both of them at New Hampshire Speedway.
I can't remember a longer 2 hours in the nascar world than the wait for Steve O'Donnell's statement on Newman
Not just the Nascar world, the whole motorsports community. Me and my fellow F1 fans were SO relieved when we knew he was ok.
@@709mash for sure. Those fences just made everything even worse
This
@@709mash Yes
Dales crash comes to mind. But that one didn't look bad. He just never crawled out of the car
14 people dislike this. Ironically the same 14 who refuse to drink Corona beer in fear of contracting the virus. Idiots. Get well, Newman & be back soon ❤!
Maybe they refuse Corona because it's gross
@@TheJjrjr125 no argument here.
@@metfan1638 right..I never liked Corona. It tastes like it's old & skunky
Now up to 111 Got to be Newman haters, but then why would they watch the video in the first place?
metfan16 probably those dibenedetto fans that are still mad after bristol
Ryan is such an amazing person and driver. He speaks volumes for NASCAR
I've been such a fan for such a long time. Prayers for continued healing🙏💓
Thank you Ryan Newman for keeping everyone in the loop at how you are doing. You have no idea how many people love you! You are such an inspiration to many, I know so many people that think very highly of you. Just keep being you and thank you again!
Nothing makes me happier than watching this video.. we prayed so hard for Ryan and thought they were unheard for awhile. Thank you Lord. God bless and keep all of our drivers.
I read these comments of faked injuries and realize that unless there is blood and carnage people don't understand true injury. Ryan said that he had a bruised brain injury which is a very serious condition. I wish the very best for Ryan as he continues on his recovery journey.
Only one person
and one obvious troll.
Relax!
@@doodlepops707 how would you like it if you were accused of faking a head injury? So shut up troll
Isnt that the same as a concussion
@@aliostrowski1935 I am not a doctor, I was just reading that there is a difference between concussion and contusion which they described as a brain bruise.
your absolutely right . i think he should retired . no one knows the long term injury . we see this in boxing and football all the time , he shouldn't chance another head injury .
It sure is nice to see him survive that crash without worse injuries. No rush to get back in the car, taking all the time he needs, smart move for sure. Best wishes for Ryan, and I hope he is able to make a full and speedy recovery. Looking forward to seeing him back on track. Been following his career since 2002.
God bless you Ryan Newman and you're family!
You’re a lucky dog
So glad you're doing so good. That was one heck of a wreck
The retirement question reminds me of what Lynda Petty said to Richard after the 1988 Daytona crash, "Are we still having fun?". Lynda had asked Richard, before the racing started in 1988, when he was going to retire and Richard replied, "When racing stops being fun."
Glad to see Ryan Newman doing great :)
Ahhh. I remember that crash.. I was hoping for him to win. Hes my favorite driver. But when i saw what happened I was in shock and realized that he might be dead. I'm tearing up just writing this. But glad hes okay and waiting to see him win Talledega this Spring!!
Seeing him healthy warms my heart.😀
last nascar race i watched start to finish was the Daytona 500 in 2001. Watching a man that, to me, was an icon and near hero.....die.....broke my young but maturing heart. I stopped watching completely. Then, this year, i thought "its been a long time and not one loss of life since then. lets watch the 500 this year!"
When i saw Newman's crash.....I, like i think most who saw it, thought "did....we really just watch another racer get killed?" Im not his family nor one of his friends...i cant even claim to be a true fan since he isnt a driver i know a lot about (that tends to happen when you ignore a sport for a almost 2 decades. new people crop up and you dont know who they are)....but i was, again, heartbroken to see that crash and elated to learn that he not only survived, but was responsive! to see him doing an interview that soon after the incident is incredible!
Glad he is still alive (i cant imagine what his little kids must be going through) and NASCAR.....good on you for making these cars so much safer!
please don’t watch another race lmao everyone’s gonna be dead before the seasons over
@@jason-zx2ju haha lets be realistic....if i watch this season, people wont die....NASCAR as a sport will though.
this is why i cant have anything nice....that is alive, anyway. XD
KandaPanda unfortunately, theyre going in the wrong direction. you seen theyre having one lug tires now?
I remember seeing the 2001 daytona 500. My heart dropped when I saw the black curtains come up at the 2020 one. And I been trying to get into local dirt racing where drivers still die almost every other year. It doesnt matter if you know them. They were doing something great and saw true disaster. I been in wrecks, myself. It shakes you up, but you get back in for the next round. Glad to see Newnan is going back.
@Jeg Egg No my friend you are not alone.
I honestly thought he was dead. I was there on Sunday, had to sell my tickets, but I remember watching the race and this crash on my ship in the middle of the ocean and the coverage just ended after seeing Jeff Gordon talk with tears in his eyes. I really thought he was dead
Absolute miracle. Thanking God you are walking, talking and still with us Ryan.
He looks and sounds great but he’s smart enough to know that he can’t get back in the car yet!!
Well, he still needs to be medially cleared anyway.
he would have raced the next Sunday , the Dr wants his noggin to heal a little more though. Brain injuries are taken more seriously these days.
Thank goodness for Ryan Newman! Angels are watching over him.
Wonderful that Ryan acknowledged all the prayers. There were a lot of them.
Between this and Kenny on Dale Jr's podcast, NASCAR hasn't made me this emotional in a long time.
I had to watch that Kenny interview in segments because I knew I was gonna lose it. Schrader's one of those "heart of the sport" guys, glad he's still banging around the midwest.
Great to hear! That crash was horrifying to watch, I thought we lost him.
I've had the pleasure of meeting Ryan Newman 3 years ago. He is such a humble down to earth guy.
Soooooo glad you are well *Ryan!!!* ......Looking forward to seeing an *AWESOME* veteran driver back on the track! *Godspeed* my friend!!! =)
Glad you're still with us Ryan.
Those fab guys need a bonus check! And and thank you as well..
If Jack Roush , Doesn't give them a bonus... I would think Rayn will give it to them out his own pocket.
@Elon Musk bs. True capitalists share willingly.
@Elon Musk socialism doesn't either. That bonus would be taxed and given to someone who doesn't even know what NASCAR is
Blessed be. That’s all I have to say on that. Blessed be and thank God he’s alive. Continued prayers to you Ryan.
Ryan’s been my favorite since his rookie year it was my fiancé’s first Daytona 500 super hard to watch I’m so glad he’s okay
I am so happy that Ryan is ok. I miss working his pit at Charlotte as pit firefighter. He honestly is a great guy!!
Great to see him smile and that he's alive and well.
Having had a closed head injury, I would take broken bones any day.
I'm not emotional *you are*
Our prayers worked!! Love you Ryan Newman 👌🏻🏁
We are learning so much about head injuries and how they affect athletes. It will make better diagnosis and save lives.
A genuine humble hard working man Ryan Newman is... May God continue to bless an authentic Gentleman! Blessings Sir Ryan!☘💚☘💚☘💚☘💚
He is my favorite driver. Very happy to see him doing so well.
He still finished in the Top 10 in the 500, that’s another crazy thing. IIRC, Newman crossed the finish line in ninth place.
SO, SO glad to see that man in good health!!!
Pure AWESOMENESS!!....and shout out to the boys in the shop!
Every since he was a riookie in 2002 and I picked him over Jimmy Johnson for the running of Rookie of the Year I have been a huge fan. Can't wait to see him in his racing car again!
His smile at the beginning is honestly everything
Ryan Newman has been my favorite racer since I started watching back around 2003. I'm so glad he's ok.
It's crazy how 19 years ago on the last lap of the Daytona 500 we lost one of the greatest ever in a crash that didn't even look that bad because of the poor safety of the cars at the time
But that was a massive wake up call to nascar and because of the safety measures implemented due to a not that serious looking crash on the last lap of the Daytona 500 a man that was involved in what looked like a deadly wreck escaped with non life threatening injuries. The death of Dale sr. will never feel okay and will always be the greatest tragedy this sport has seen, but it comforts me that the sacrifice he made saved the life of Ryan Newman (in the same place and situation he made that sacrifice) and probably many other drivers
Well said, thank you !
So glad you're OK, Ryan! That was a tough night waiting to hear your status after the race.
Glad to see youre on this side of the dirt, Ryan! God bless and God speed!
I've been a Newman fan the last couple of years. I always pull for the "older drivers"
Amen. Prayers answered. See you back at the track, Ryan. Thank you.
What a blessing to see
It just completely boggles my mind that he survived that crash with just a moderate concussion. I am thankful beyond words that he is still with us. No broken bones, no sprains, not even slurred speech. It's just incredible!!!
One of my favorite drivers!!God bless you and your family.
All I can say is that I was honestly scared for him. The last time I felt like this was when Dale had his accident at Daytona. This is beautiful on so many levels. Safety has sure come a long way since Dale. Welcome back, Ryan
You rock Ryan!!!
Welcome back, Ryan. Glad to see you're ok
It's amazing how far safety has come in NASCAR. So good to see him recovering well and smiling. Can't wait to see him back on track.
I do not understand who would dislike this video? This interview was so well put together👍
Ryan Newman is a class act! He's one of my favorite driver's! Thank God he had guardian angels around him that day! I look forward to seeing you back in #6 one day soon! Love ya man!
This crash had me terrified. I kept looking for updates for two hours straight and finally I had heard he’s okay. I was definitely one of those people praying. He’s so sweet and humble, and this crash has made him my second favorite NASCAR Driver.
Amen to the guardian angels🙏🏻👍🏻
I was sure I witnessed his passing. I had a knot in my stomach. I am so happy but shocked at the same time. He was definitely in God’s hands.
He has been my favorite driver simce his rookie year driving the #12 alltel dodge. Much as any newman fan myself included wanted him to win that, he was so close he deserved it I am much more happy to see him doing well back to full health. Their is always next years Daytona. I do look forward to seeing him back behind the wheel. I'm glad he's safe above all else.
I'm so glad he's doing so well!
I've always been a Ryan Newman "fan" per say, but now...he's my DRIVER! Was Earnhardt, then Jr., now it's Ryan. I'm 51 years old and this young man will be "The Man" until he decides "it's time".
God Bless you Ryan, your family, your crew, and all that have had any part in making that car's safety a priority, for you to be talking, walking, breathing, and being with your family today!
Can't wait to see you on the track again Brother!
Your newest #1 Fan!
God blessed you and will keep on....hope to see u racing again very soon!! Amen!!
We had an assignment to write to someone famous when we were in 6th grade. I picked Ryan. I got a handwritten letter back thanking me for being a fan and a hat. He's been my guy since.
Hope to see back on the track soon, glad your okay.
You look great, Ryan! We are so very happy God spared you! We can’t wait to see you back behind the wheel!
I have been watching NASCAR for YEARS, ( Yea I am old lol. 20 even 15 years ago that was a Fatal Accident. I was so HAPPY FOR Ryan....
This MAN took a ride most commenters can't imagine and he's still here. Congrats to life Newman
Glad you're still with us Ryan ✌️♥️
I cannot believe he survived this crash. My son who was 8 at the time was beside himself. He did not sleep the whole night as there we little details on his condition. I watched other racing tragedies Greg Moore, Dale Sr live on TV but this one really hit me hard.
We are all blessed to have him survive with full movement as well💛💛💛
Glad he is doing well!
Welcome back Newman, someone was looking over you that day !
Never cried so much as to see him walk out of the hospital with his girls..I have met Ryan way back in his Usac days #39..Thank God Ryan is still with us.
Now there's a true driver. A driver ..., Born to drive. Very happy for your recovery Ryan! Man , .... You are Awesome!
Rayon is a remarkable person and humbling. He is living proof that safety is so important. Safety is what keeps our love ones safe so we can enjoy another day with them.
Very happy to see Ryan doing well. -Tom f4collector
Great to see him alive and doing so well.
Im so surprised that he survived! He is one of my fav nascar driver
I wish you the best your a very nice person . Keep you in my prayers
So glad you're ok Ryan! Can't wait to see you back behind the wheel!
Get well, but don't rush things. I am very happy that you survived the crash, hope to see you driving again soon. GOD BLESS!
GOD BLESS YOU.
Ryan ❤
Why would people dislike this? Sad people
So relieved to see Ryan well.
The energy was dissipated because of the way his car was rolling and still in motion when it was hit. If he’s stopped sitting upside down on the track and gets run into at speed he’s dead. Physics saved him.
Sure buddy...
@@Army4Runner Nice counter argument fool. stay in school kid.
Great interview! Thanks, Ryan for being who you always are... much love to you and yours.
When Newman started racing, I remember people saying, “He’s an engineer. Why would an engineer want to be a race car driver?” So obvious now...
Ryan Newman, the hardest guy for LaJoie to pass...
Awesome! Very glad to see Ryan is still good!
