The illusion is lost because the mat needs to be 180deg turned round. So as the cat enters and sees the mat they just see something different not the illusion. By the time they've walked on it, there's not illusion just the smell of the material and knowing there is something different to investigate.

They only react to the rug itself, cause it is something which was not there an hour before. 🥰 If something is changed in their environment, it must be supervised (and needs some additional hair). 🥰
Additionally, the optical illusion only works from the camera side. The cats initially approach the rug from the opposite side, therefore they only see a strange rug but would never perceive a hole.

I was surprised how well the illusion works for the multiple angles we do get to see it. A perspective of a cat's head approaching the rug would have been nice to see. Still, I got the impression they were just inspecting a new object for the most part. Though preferring the edges of the rug when crossing it when running around with the human was interesting. It did seem like they were inspecting the illusion a little bit, as well.

These cats got me laughing from the start- they are super sensitive and could PASS anty test!!! Even lLook how they judged if you were going to worry about the thing that looked like a hole, before playing on it!! They are like children, but super smart
Noel wasn't fooled by the optical illusion because he's too smart for that. Lol. I guess cats don't always trust their eyes when seeing things, more sceptical perhaps?
First is visual, which reports a problem, they smell, and they can smell the rug, the fibers, the plastic, etc, it smells like something, rather than nothing, then they sweep with whiskers while getting a closer sniff and both report back that something solid is there, and finally if they aren't fully convinced, they paw at it for surefootedness. Some cats are quicker at reaching a conclusion on visual anomaly than others. When the guy started playing with them, they lacked the time to run through the diagnostic process, and so they mostly erred on the side of caution and juked the hole, except those that even while in pursuit mode, remembered that the hole is solid. Thats my take on it anyway.
I had a painting like this, trust me, in RL its not so cool, it only looks good in videos and when youre drunk lol. I also seen this in the street drawn on the floor. its better like that since there are no boarders.
At first glance I would think the cats can't even see the illusion because their field of view is only a foot or so off the ground like the early camera angle shows and there simply just checking out something new in the house as cats are curious in nature. However later on in the video a couple of the cats can be seen jumping over the illusion spot and pawing at the sloping areas in the illusion, so it's hard to say what they're really seeing. Cute cats!

Оптическая иллюзия возникает когда издалека смотришь и немного сверху.
С высоты глаз кошака никакого оптического обмана уже нет.

These cats got me laughing from the start- they are super sensitive and could PASS anty test!!! Even lLook how they judged if you were going to worry about the thing that looked like a hole, before playing on it!! They are like children, but super smart

Noel wasn't fooled by the optical illusion because he's too smart for that. Lol. I guess cats don't always trust their eyes when seeing things, more sceptical perhaps?

First is visual, which reports a problem, they smell, and they can smell the rug, the fibers, the plastic, etc, it smells like something, rather than nothing, then they sweep with whiskers while getting a closer sniff and both report back that something solid is there, and finally if they aren't fully convinced, they paw at it for surefootedness. Some cats are quicker at reaching a conclusion on visual anomaly than others. When the guy started playing with them, they lacked the time to run through the diagnostic process, and so they mostly erred on the side of caution and juked the hole, except those that even while in pursuit mode, remembered that the hole is solid.
Thats my take on it anyway.
Easy to be skeptical of sight when you have supercharged smell and whiskers! I'm surprised it fooled any of them very long.

At first glance I would think the cats can't even see the illusion because their field of view is only a foot or so off the ground like the early camera angle shows and there simply just checking out something new in the house as cats are curious in nature. However later on in the video a couple of the cats can be seen jumping over the illusion spot and pawing at the sloping areas in the illusion, so it's hard to say what they're really seeing. Cute cats!
