The interesting thing is, while most cats fail the mirror test (some actually figure it out right away), its actually an unfair test. Cats don't actually see detail very well, especially close up. Cats are far sighted, so they don't see 'themselves' in a mirror, they see a cat shaped thing that doesn't make noise and has no scent. That freaks them out. The mirror test is not a fair test because it doesn't take into consideration how an animal identifies itself. Cats identify things by scent first and by sight second. Cats rub their own scent all over their territory, friendly creatures IN their territory and identify things including themselves mainly by smell. It also doesn't help that there are only something like 400 or so coat patterns a cat can have. Imagine if all human's had one of 400 faces and there was no diversity further than that...that would suck for recognizing people since everyone would have like 8 million doppelgangers. Humans probably wouldn't use sight as a primary for of identification either.
*humans (plural non-possessive) human's = singular possessive (or a contraction of "human is/has") Apostrophes are for contractions and possessive nouns, not pluralizing.
It’s a glitch in the Matrix … Seriously though, I feel like I can detect the ‘photon lag’ here, at times … though, it’s probably something to do with the angle of the mirror?
I tried this years ago with a cat I had at the time. It was a smaller mirror and he was a few years old, not a kitten. He just sat and looked at his reflection for a while; then he went behind the mirror, saw that there was nothing there and, after that, he just wasn't interested in it at all, completely ignored it.
How can a human learn to tell the difference between a cat that hasn't figured out the mirror test, versus a cat that _has_ figured out the mirror test and thinks that their reflection is fun to play with?
An excellent question. Kind of reminds me of a study a while back, which came to the conclusion that young children don't understand the concept of one person not knowing information that another person knows. Except, I remember the question from that study. It was: "If Johnny wears Dave's shoes and walks through the house with mud on them, will Johnny or Dave be blamed for the mess?" I optimistically answered that Johnny would be blamed, because I thought it was UNFAIR that Dave should be blamed for something that Johnny did, and hoped that their parents would believe Dave when he told them the truth. The study came to the conclusion that young children don't understand that information isn't universal. But they failed to ask the follow-up question as to WHY the children were answering the way that we did. Because I have to wonder how many of the kids in that study answered the same way that I did, for the same REASON that I did.

Years ago, I saw a prank video on UA-cam where they set up a public women's restroom (hand washing area) with what appeared to be a mirror but was actually a window, with identical twin actors on either side.
When my cat first saw herself in a mirror (on a dressing table) she must have assumed it was a window. She immediately rushed round the back (she hated strange cats - she was tiny but feisty) and stopped short. A quick look round the front at the reflection again and she just ambled away - presumably realising it was her reflection. She was quite smart.
0:58 This right here I love. The kitten just intelligent enough to recognize that the other kitten doesn't exist on the other side of the mirror itself, but isn't clever enough to piece together that the other kitten is merely a reflection of itself, so it has to assume the other kitten is in some form a real entity.
My kittens tried to find the "playmate" - Behind mirror. :D Learned (as adults) to totally ignore this. On the other hand, Cats do seem to use mirrors to see *other* things? Cats are EVER Interesting! :P
Have you seen "Florida Man Experiencing a Mirror for the 1st Time"? Standing his ground, the guy walks past it, pulls out his handgun and shoots the mirror.
Brings back happy memories of my cat Hubert Herbert Sherbert who as a kitten used to do this sort of thing against the glass of the patio doors. Thanks.
