  • HOW TO DIY Hang on the back filter
Choose a plastic container or tote that fits over the edge of your aquarium. This will serve as the main body of your filter.
Drill holes in the container for the intake and outflow pipes. Ensure the holes are sized to fit your PVC pipe or tubing snugly.
Cut lengths of PVC pipe or flexible tubing to serve as the intake and outflow. The intake will draw water into the filter, while the outflow will return filtered water to the tank.
Attach one end of each pipe to the holes in the container. Use silicone sealant around the holes to prevent leaks.
Cut filter media (foam, sponge, or filter pads) to fit inside the container. This media will trap debris and provide surface area for beneficial bacteria.
Place the filter media inside the container around the pump. You may need to create a baffle system using plastic or acrylic sheets to direct water flow through the media.
Fill the filter container with water and ensure that there are no air bubbles trapped in the system. Allow the water to flow through the filter media.
Turn on the pump and check for proper water flow. Adjust the intake and outflow pipes as needed to achieve the desired flow rate.
