Imagine waking up turning on the news to see that your taxes got spent on that
Still better than half the crap governments spend on taxes lol
They spend it worse on usual stuff, if only you normies bothered reading gov bulletins..
looks like somebody had something happy happened to them today @@BTChanOSRS

@@BTChanOSRS honestly I'd rather have my taxes go to shmex dolls than vanity projects.
Japan be creating solutions for problems that don't exist.
Then they don’t fix any of the problems that actually exist. Or they pretend they don’t see it.
this is how japan live in future
2024: oh we’re fine our population is dropping? Whatever
2100: where did half the population go?
I actually LIKED it and I think it will really WORK.
I wouldn't call this unnecessary 😏
Japan never surprises with the wacky things but this is really bizarre
as bizarre as Jojo's adventure?
You must have never been there
I actually LIKED it and I think it will really WORK. Mark my words.
I mean jojo had some bizzare adventures
You sound very easy to please Johnny.
I seriously doubt that little kids would even know what a love doll is.
Same.
even i didnt know what it was .-. like i didnt know they looked life like, I would probably think "oh that doll looks so real"
If it has clothes on and no one said it's a love doll instead of a robot, would anyone know? What are the visible signs that it's a love doll and not a lifelike robot?
Yeah the bit about children see it... and it has genitals UNDER it's clothing... just like every person? It's a weird choice but it's not inappropriate if covered.
i don't see an issue with them using a sex doll. people jerk off to and on their anime figures or posters so why is a love doll worse. people use posters in shops that people jerk off to at home. Just a fact.
Unless you know it's a doll it just looks like a realistic mannequin
@@LukeDeWoop wouldn't they put underwear on it?
@@KitOkunaru The Kimoto's are long, but maybe just to be safe. They would need to change outfits out of public view ether way.
to be fair, the doll does look good dressed up than a typical stale mannequin though. Maybe that's what the guy was going for.
And hiring models on rotating shifts? For how long? The cost adding up + make ups will end up being more than 2.8k for sure. Idk man this drama is kinda overreaction, how are the public going to know it's actually a lovedoll when it's clothed up. Kids definitely can't tell for sure.
Was thinking the same exact thing. Hiring a model or multiple models for several days would go way over 2.8k lol
As an outsider who’s never been to Japan I have to agree the images with the love doll were way more attention grabbing and I definitely would have stopped to take a look. Meanwhile the bluish grey mannequins blended into much with the indigo and I would have walked right passed them without a second thought
yep, it's better in long term. And thanks to this overreaction the dolls won't be used anymore and wasting the taxpayer money.
That's exactly what I was thinking. And as long as the doll was fully clothed and not displayed in a sexual manner, what is there to talk about. It's more concerning that there are people walking around, able to tell that a dressed mannequin is actually a love doll. It would be a waste of money if they could have bought a similar, realistic looking mannequin for a lot less. But then, no one would be talking about it, and maybe that's exactly what they were going for.
in japan, one model would be paid far more then 3k usd for one month and a doll like that is a one time fee.
Kinda sus that people apparently are able to spot a doll in an exhibit and INSTANTLY recognize, thats a love doll, not some kind of regular doll!
I get that the auditors can see it in the paperwork, but random generic tourist number 81381?. Very much doubt.
I was thinking the same thing. But my guess is that none of the tourists or locals knew since it was used for 3 events the last of which was in 2019 and only now in 2024 is it a news article. My guess is someone saw the paper work got weirded out and blew it out of proportion and that the original person involved had an idea saw that realistic mannequins are expensive and have long shipping and lead times and mad a bad judgement call.
@@MaheerKibria I completely agree, i was thinking the exact same.
Well, maybe the guy had one the looked the same, you know it's Japan, that kinda of doll it's as common as barbies over there lol.
WELL AT LEAST HES USING IT FOR SOMETHING OTHER THAN SEX IT'S ACTUALLY CREATIVE
@@pedrothevenard Im in the US and i have 8 (but anime), so what. Thinking they are just for sex is a uneducated assumption.
I’m going to be honest as an outsider who’s never been to Japan the love doll pictures were way more interesting and eye catching than the original mannequins which just blended right in. I would have absolutely stopped to check out the lanterns and dye with the love doll, but those bluish grey mannequins, I would have walked right passed them. I also wouldn’t have even thought it was a love doll if I wasn’t told
The guy who organised the love doll clearly had ulterior motives, but the idea itself wasn’t bad
Having worked for a U.S. state’s tourism department, I saw the title of the video and immediately thought this would be the case. Outrageous stunts like this work if they could have made a joke about it. I’ve seen a lot of wild projects proposed as “public art.” However, I doubt these people really wanted to cause a stir.
but it may work in their favor. i wanna see the tokushima love doll!!!!
So this doll was used for lile 6 years before it became a problem.... its a doll, as long as nobody was actually using it for its 'intended' purpose, this is very much a non problem
It doesnt have to be a problem to become news rube.
I think the issue was the cost, when they could've just bought a mannequin. But yeah news makes a big deal out of anything for clicks.
If nothing else, it would be more sus if they just displayed it once and put it away somewhere. Displaying it as much as possible helps justify the cost. I'm also 100% of the opinion that it's less horrifying as the standard mannequin anyway.
@@ariesaraya1822but the mannequin just gonna be way uglier and having a custom made doll or actor would be much more expensive than this. it's the perfect middle ground imo.
Serious question though, how would you know it's a love doll if you looked at it? From pics it's just a doll that's clothed, how would random person know? Why would person who doesn't even know care? I'm genuinely curious
Same lol
I honestly think this is a genius idea, you wouldn't even know unless you bought that model yourself or were shopping for it, it would even get people talking especially if what Joey said is true that no one visits Tokushima. Maybe people will even buy the kimonos for their love dolls. I think this is just an over reaction especially when there's temples and statues built for boobs and penises.
My guess is that it is a certain model and not a custom one so maybe someone recognised it or someone found the receipt while putting away paperwork.
@@Hopischwopi fair point, still a case of "it takes a degen to know a degen" and imo not exactly applicable to general public.. That's probably why it stayed a "secret" for so many years tho.. Oh well
The open mouth lol
Maybe the bought the “love” doll precisely cuz it would cause a ruckus. This is one of those all publicity is good publicity type of things. Otherwise, why not just buy a regular mannequin.
That's what I was thinking, the sex doll would get headlines, it's hella more realistic for showcasing dyed clothing than a standard mannequin, and once it's served it's use, someone can take it home; it's win-win. And from the looks of the price, they even tried to save the taxpayer some money by cheaping out on the sex doll, since I'm pretty sure they go for a lot more than that.
I love how people just assumed that when the simple option was this was the cheapest and fastest way to have a semirealistic mannequin. A silicone mannequin usually costs $1500-6000 depending on how bespoke it is, shipping, etc. The guy was probably just trying to save cash while having the shortest turnaround time. It's the same reason you would go to the factory. Think about it it was used for 3 events the last one was in 2019 It is only 5 years later that we are hearing about this. If you saw this at the event based on the pictures you would have no clue it was a love doll.
@@MaheerKibria It is most likely to save time than money. These silicon love dolls are 2000-3000 dollar a piece.
@@ZeroXSEED Also some manufacturers have option for photograph dolls that don't have certain parts but if it was case "we just quickly pick something up from factory" then maybe they had to take what was available. I think those usually are custom made for customer so it take some time.
NGL, if no one would of reported on it, no one would have known unless they know their love dolls enough to spot one... at first glance it is just some uncanny valley animatronics without the motors and servo to animate it. (or powered off.) meaning someone must of asked, got the answer, got revolted and made an article. i mean they could still use it, just remove the naughty bits.
Genuinely don't see the problem with this. Noone would even know without being informed about it first so why would it matter? It having realistic genitals doesn't make any difference if it's all covered up anyways and aside from that it's literally just a different kind of mannequin. The only people who can recognize it are people who own one themselves, which completely voids the issue for those people too. They wanted to obtain a realistic doll and they found an industry which is completely focused on achieving that goal so it makes a lot of sense that they would consider it as an option. The only issue i can see would be the investment cost since the dolls probably aren't exactly cheap for the simple purpose they have to fulfill and maybe the dolls were just an excuse for the government employee to get his hands on the doll once the project is over, although that still wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't the main reason for the purchase imo, better than throwing it away.
It’s prohibitively expensive and bought with the people’s tax dollars is the main issue imho
Its a good investment. Those 'love dolls' look way better and can pose better than your priciest mannequin. Solid investment and a weird tourist attraction. I'd say the man who got it there took one for the whole prefecture LOL 😅
'let's go to tokushima, see the lovedoll-- DO NOT TOUCH THE LOVEDOLL, IT"S GOVTMNT PROPERTY-- enjoy the inaka.'
They're doing a big brain play where they make headlines to actually get visibility
Would the normal populace see anything but a "realistic mannequin" - Nothing about it says "sex doll" - it is a nicely, conservative kimono, nothing sexual about it. Also, I used to work for a store that one department did sell sex dolls... one break, I read the literature in office about, and the company that made them, also made life-like forms for movies (need a dead body? Especially one that looked like it went through an accident? They provided). So yeah - I think the guy did a good job... think of all the free promotion he got through news, etc., and even now we know about it because you mentioned it.
Thats it. They convinced me. I will visit Tokushima when I visit Japan in April
HAH, they got you hook, line and sinker! This is what they planned all along. Tourism at it's finest!
hey to be fair 13 minutes before this video i had no idea the Tokushima prefecture even existed so the doll's doing something right at least....
The official should get a promotion. This was a genius idea. 99% if people wont be able to tell its a love doll and even those that might be able to would probably not assume thats what it is unless told.
Also getting a love doll manufacturer to make a realistic mannequin seems like a good idea to me. Just have to consider cost versus quality of alternative options.
@@Dan-Ky-Kong well if it's custom you could potentially ask them to remove the sex feature stuff for lower cost. This kind of thing isn't unheard of when trying to acquire unusual items. You get someone who doesn't normally produce it but clearly has the capability to custom build.
@@Dan-Ky-Kong Realistic AND fully articulates isnt cheap with mannequins... You can get a non articulating mannequin but "realistic" as they claim for $400ish and a fully articulated unrealistic one that can run $1k. The articulation is what costs if the joints are good and not cheap and limited. Sex dolls can do all the same poses a human can if not more than the average female and still looks far more realistic than any mannequin can. Life size wax or even same silicone statues sold by companys runs $10k and up and a American sex doll producer sells their sex dolls for $10k to 20k and up. $3k for a silicone doll is quite cheap but you can get them cheaper but it is Japan after all.
@@Spojo1It costs more to ask for a non sex version because they have to fill it which is more silicone or tpe.
@@Dan-Ky-Kong They cost around the same. Love doll might be a bit cheaper because they're mass produced, and only expensive if you custom order. So stock love doll < custom manequin < custom love doll
I used to live here… Tokushima was beautiful hidden beauty for hikes etc. there’s also the scarecrow village a bit further west. But as I have lived there and as I worked for the government, I can confirm this is the most Tokushima thing ever
unique is a strong word
speaking as a nepalese-japanese person, japan weird as shit sometimes
as a nepalese - kiwi person idk wtf is going on
@@Kfruistik lol
I mean, seems like people didn't really notice that it was a lovedoll so, I wouldn't have minded seeing it again xD
Then again after this came out it would be a great source of comedy. "Look honey they wheeled out the indigo lovedoll again!"
In about 10 years those will be androids.
I wonder if jpn has gov't auctions like the US. Can you imagine they hold an auction to clear out warehouse space and this pops up for bid amongst the other municipal goods.
I was thinking the same. Like, it would be a shame if it would be destroyed just due to the outrage. I mean, it was pricey and it's been already paid for, so perhaps there would be a way to get back at least some of the money spent. But then, imagine at the event, among some power tools and other stuff there to just casually be the doll, with the original packaging and brochure, and listed as "slightly used" or something like that 😂. And if it was an auction, how could the auctioneer keep a straight face while introducing the item and reading the points in the brochure. And imagine who would feel not too awkward to make offers for it 😳.
I dunno about flying all the way over there for a picture with the doll, but if I'm already going there, I'd definitely do it for the meme value
3000 usd considering moden marketing expeditures is peanuts.
I bet after that love doll is stored, it would suddenly disappear.
I don't know if I'm just weird but I would have loved to go and get pictures with it. It just seems so funny and unique, it would've been great to catch that moment in a photo.
I was wondering that too and that i was the only one 😂😂😂
its too funny so worth
gotta spend that budget somehow
Hmm interesting where can I buy one ?
Considering that this originally happened in 2017 (essentially 8 years ago, almost a full decade lol) says that it actually isn't a big deal and very few people made the connection or were offended by it (no pun intended). Maybe if they got it without the genitals, sure. Actual realistic and/or technical mannequins can cost up to $10,000 or more sometimes, so that's actually a decent move, fiscally speaking...and we know that this love doll is going to be built with durability in mind (lmao oh lord). My opinion is: "So what?" and also "Who cares?"
Remember: departments, if they won't spend all their funds, have their funds cut for the next year. That happens EVERYWHERE. And, whilst maybe, MAYBE cutting expenditure should be seen as a positive by all of us of common sense, the fact is that different bureaucracies compete with each other and having your won funds cut is seen as a loss of face. So yeah, stupid amounts of money spent on stupid things are something that happens literally EVERYWHERE, be it a democracy or a dictatorship, for petty reasons.
I was commenting mid video that someone in the middle of nowhere, at the literal other side of the world, was hearing about this and hearing about tokushima for the first time ever, but you just commented on that so... yeah, if exposition was the goal, I say they've acheaved it
He was probably planning to take the doll home after the exhibition was over, using the excuse of disposing of it. Maybe he "tested" the doll himself before displaying it lol.
So happy I caught you so early Joey~ lol awee you always make my day
Love the videos, man. Keep it up!!!
I really think it depends on the type of doll that was used. In this price range they are usually highly customizable (that might also be a reason why it was picked up in person). A possibility might be, that as a customization all potential openings were removed. In this case the only thing that was left would be something mannequin like. Without a question this was way to much money for such a project, but it may not be as inappropriate as it seems.
Subjective. It may be taxes used but the Japanese gov is a democratic gov which means they have the right to spend taxes as they see fit if agreed/voted by fellow gov members, thats how a democracy works. Your opinion is just that as a citizen to that democratic country. 3k usd is cheap compared to the amount our governments spends on the same things we buy for a fraction of the price which is like below 1% so again 3k for a doll that costs 3k for everyone isnt unreasonable and w/e their goal was with this doll was im sure met. You do know sex dolls made in Japan and in the US costs up to 20k usd, you do know this, right? They could of bought one of the humanlike robots for $50k and up that talk. $3k is chump change compared to what governments spends for pointless things.
This is a really smart marketing campaign for the love doll makers. I would totally go to this station to take a gander, for you know, future reference.
I think also, in terms of real life character promotion for things like animated series and even for traditional and historical characters, this medium of like ‘real life dolls’ is actually a virtually unexplored area… I mean, can you imagine for instance a real life, life like 7ft tall Sephiroth ‘doll’ for instance… I feel like, cost is prohibitive based upon demand and maybe there is ways that this can actually become an above board industry… equally in robots for instance… it’s a unique maniform expression of sculpting excellence… so, like I say, if they did the thing the right way, it seems like it is less likely to be wrong doing and more likely to be a misunderstood exercise in calculated risk…
Keep up the awesome work and videos Joey love the video
Amazing video Joey.
I did went to Tokushima just because I bought a 2nd-hand watch that was originally from there, so I thought I'd pass through there instead of through Chuugoku during a trip from Osaka to Fukuoka. It's an alright place. Didn't know there was a ufotable cafe there that's always full and only available by reservation so that was a bummer. Be prepared to bring more cash than usual 'cause for some reason most parts of the Shikoku region's allergic to Suica/IC cards.
I mean... let's be honest here. If they used a normal mannequin would we all be talking about it right now? Don't think so.
Also I don't believe anyone would notice what that doll was if they had never heard of such things... So I see this as an absolut win!
Now I want a horror movie where the doll breaks out of the storage facility to take her revenge on the officials who exploited her
No revenge in it but check out Airdoll by Hirokazu Koreeda. That has a sexdoll that comes alive.
Like any Doctor Who episode with autons
In order to promote tourism in our province, I will now begin performing nonsensical bullshit with public funds to attract national and international media attention
They sell realistic mannequins--probably for less than the doll costs. That purchase says a lot about that "male employee." 😅
Do we know that for a fact that you can get a more realistic mannequin than a silicon doll for cheaper?
This isnt correct. Most realistic mannequins do not articulate and they do not look near as realistic and they are hollow plastic or fiberglass. Mannequins that do articulate and mostly the unrealistic ones, they can go up to 1k if they are quality. The realistic ones that do articulate but they can run up to 5k. Also keep in mind, prices in Japan are just dumb high so even the prices i said is lower than what is in Japan to order. Sex/love dolls are cheaper for what you get which is silicone, no exposed joints and overall far more realistic. And no, that purchese says nothing about the employee other than he can think outside of a narrow mind like you.
As someone who's going to Tokushima next month, this actually helped me find out about the dye products. Nice.
tbf if i saw that irl, i would just assume it was a more realistic mannequin. Would never know it was a weird doll 💀
I know where I'll spend my vacations now
Honestly... if that happened in Canada, we'd make a mascot out of it!
It does look better then a mannequin and in the long run cheaper then models. It has genitals under it's clothing which will be odd to the person who will have to redress it out of site, but the general public wouldn't see. If having genitals under clothing is inappropriate then we are all in trouble. Might have been a cheaper alternative if using tax money though.
I dunno Jo Jo, that love doll is pretty striking. I suppose there are two questions, was the love doll used for any other purpose which I suspect can be ascertained forensically and did they do any other source search for similar ‘life like’ mannequins… because outside of the sex toy market, the life like qualities of this doll are super striking… is there a version that does not have the sex elements? Could be a growth market? Maybe like a general wireframe with lifelike head and arms and legs… something? I think, personally, there is a striking difference and frankly if there is no practical wrongdoing and they followed a genuine protocol to seriously pursue this idea that the man says he had, including procedural research… could be a nothing burger…
That’s honestly great, also what the prefecture was that again?
Honestly, except for it maybe being more expensive than a simple mannequin and the decision in the first place, their is nothing wrong with it being a love doll, nobody is gonna know unless you tell them, and even then, what is wrong for children to see it. It's indistinguishable for pretty much everyone from a regular high quality doll/mannequin, unless you or your kids are gonna rip the clothes off, nobody is gonna know and without this article nobody would care.
I'm gonna be the outlier and say this wasn't a bad move. There's no way to know the "model" is a love doll unless you know about love dolls. To the average person, it's just a very good looking mannequin. And I don't think I've ever seen a mannequin that looks half as good as one of those dolls.
If the intention was to make the clothes "come to life" by presenting a love doll, which is meant to look as human as possible, as opposed to using standard mannequins... I think it was not a bad idea.
Love dolls are an increasing market in Japan. Some people even treat them as non-"sus" items and merely love them for their aesthetic value, much like a Ball Jointed Doll. To many, they're not just an oversized "sus" toy but a work of art, an outlet for creativity or even a canvas to project their feelings on. So I think the stigma around them is kinda silly since it's not like the doll was displayed in provocative poses or anything.
8:52 me when I’m watching anime and someone walks by the room

Tbh the doll in the kimono looks good...
I don't know what is funnier. The title of the video or Joey's face in the thumbnail

Oh shit. This is great I am laughing so much.
I love how Felix show the good and cool part of Japan, and then there is Joey showing the bad and weird part of Japan. I love both of them btw.
11:44 Nah they're probably still "using" it
The man who organised this is pretty cultured
Honesty I'd probably just think oh that's an uncanny looking mannequin as I walked by but wouldn't really think much more about it. I guess they thought the extra expense was worth the "upgrade" .
It relieves stress and is a lovely welcome for visitors. Seems likes a win win to me
I don't think a normal / regular person would have immediately realized that this is a 'love dall'.
ngl kinda want to go see it in person. this is hilarious
The Awa Odori in Tokushima is worth the visit in the summer - great event.
You should totally visit that prefecture 😂
If that thing just ends up going back into storage is going to "magically" disappear
Now I want to visit the place. I'd say that's done effective marketing
That doll is gonna smell fishy in the mornings. 😂😂😂
It's getting attention, mission accomplished.
They should make an auction to recuperate the costs of the purchase, or at least a portion of it.
That might creep some people out
I wonder if the guy figured out that the doll would be cheaper and or more flexible than a high end manikin or the manufacturer just cut him a good deal.
I remember "live manequins" were all the rage in the 2000s, people would go in the store just to see the models pretending to be mannequins. That money could have gone to locals as a part time job and would be an actually funny gimmick instead of... a 3k sex toy.
I just know they're not gonna find her in the "storage" they retired her to lol.
Also "just" is a bit of a misleading title, this happened 7 years ago
In this edition of Just Japan Things that Don't and Won't Make Sense But Also Makes Sense: A Prefecture in Shikoku Buys //Love// Doll

Think it was a good call. Its one of those, if you know you know situations. I mean a love doll with no holes is essentially a mannequin.
That's basically a Ginama episode
a love doll is an upgrade to a mannequin
The warehouse manager where the lovedoll is stored at gonna have a time of his life
your local gov has a member who has a friend with unsold dolls and they cooked up an overpriced contracted supply
