- A brief summary of a day's scouting-hunt Arizona OTC archery trip for deer in December 2022.
My focus of this scouting trip is the Coues Deer, as muley bucks' archery hunting is NOW closed for this unit.
The closure is part of the new AZGFD regulation that is a set quota harvest for OTC archery deer. Upon achieving the quota, the season for that unit closes. An OTC archery season by AZGFD terms consists of the early season Aug-early September, Mid-season December/December 31st, both of the SAME year and January of the FOLLOWING year.
Thus for 2023, the OTC archery season has openers in Aug-2023, December-2023 AND January 2024.
OTC archery deer harvest reporting is now MANDATORY.

Current harvest quotas are maintained weekly during the OTC archery deer season. It usually is updated Thursday/Friday. Should a harvest quota be met, AZDFG will close that unit, the following Wednesday. This is how the quotas are surpassed.
Example; Set quota is 5 muley bucks but report shows 6 bucks harvested. In those few days up to the following Wednesday closure, deer can be harvested by OTC archery hunters. AZGFD states that it is the hunter's full responsibility to know if their chosen unit is still open for OTC archery hunting, and for what deer species.

Tried to buy a license and tag on the 8th of December and was told they were all sold out for 2023.
Government bean counters sure messed everything up in Arizona!
For sure as a non-resident hunter these days.
Been hunting 24A since 2017, and both my coues areas there were burnt. Was there in Mid-December for a few days, and didn't see any bucks, just a few does.
Yes, fire devasted the area 24A, 24B & parts of 22 as well. Hoping these rains in 2022 will help to restore the feed habitat. But unlike conifer forests, the desert terrain is slow to recover from fire damage. In the NW USA, an area can burn one year, and the next year loaded with new growth & feed, just lacking cover.
Does are a good sign. Locate does as the rut should kick in any day now. I was in 24A again during December 29-30 and finally spotted buck activity in a basin where I observed group does earlier.
