Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite, Blades of Glory) joins us this week and talks about the feeling of ‘constantly being an outsider’ coming to Hollywood from a humble upbringing in the PNW and then heading back to Washington after years in the film industry. Jon shares some crazy stories from his family history that helped shape him into the anxiety and stress free man that he is today. We also get into (of course) our shared bond of horror, why Napoleon Dynamite never had a sequel, and Jon’s memorable run-ins with Will Ferrell, James Cameron, and Ali G.

Son Kyle was in the hospital with leukemia in ‘04 and every kid was wearing “Vote for Pedro” t shirts and raving about the movie. A great distraction! Thought it’d be cool to track down John so some Google searching and next thing you know I’m talking to John’s mom. I tell her the story and a few days later HE CALLS KYLE at the hospital and they talked for like 30 min. What a cool dude. Kyle’s doing great BTW!

He’s exactly right. I remember watching Napoleon Dynamite for the first time at home, seeing that first scene and I just started laughing, I couldn’t even tell you why, Napoleon was just standing there waiting for the bus, no dialogue, and I just busted out laughing, I knew then I was in for a fun time and boy was I right, what a great movie. So unique and magical in ways I cant even describe. If you know you know. Vote for Pedro.
That's the best I can explain what makes it funny. It's not something you can recreate, it's just so authentic
There really is no better way to explain it. There are two movies in my lifetime that I viewed in a theatre where I laughed so hard that I genuinely wanted the movie to end because my face was starting to hurt and I was getting a headache...from just the silliest, most juvenile humor that you can't even describe on paper. Those two movies were Napoleon Dynamite and Zoolander.

I still remember everyone in school quoting Napoleon Dynamite and wearing "Vote for Pedro" shirts shortly after it came out. My friends and I all saw it multiple times in theaters. We would cry laughing. Simpler, happier times.
you probably my age man i remember living in philly & me my brother & all of our friends hopping on a bus to the movie theatre on cottman ave to go watch it. we quoted that moved for the whole year even asked my mom for the dvd for christmas lol
I don't know if they still have it but a service station just off the interstate in Vero Beach use to have a rack that was nothing but Napolean Dynamite stuff...shirts, buttons, stickers, etc.
"Vote for Pedro" was on most of the items.

I knew Jon at BYU. I remember riding the bus home with him and he told me to tell my sister that his film made it into Sundance. I remember thinking, what is Sundance? (I grew up in Canada and had been living in Utah for only a few years). Jon is honestly the nicest guy and very genuine.
Is he still Mormon?
I grew up in Provo and that movie hit so close to home of my childhood growing up in the 80's and 90's in Mormonville Utah.

It's one of the greatest movies ever made. Hands down. Nearly every element was perfect. Cast, site, wardrobe, soundtrack, writing, timing. All of it.

I ran a a restaurant in Santa Monica Ca that had movie stars in it everyday. No one batted an eye ever at Morgan Freeman or Christina Aguilera. When this dude came in my waitstaff lost their mind and I had no idea who it was. They were trying to explain how HUGE he was and I was just laughing at the whole thing. A guy I have never heard of is shutting my dining room down. I went home and watched the movie the next day and loved it.
Napoleon Dynamite was a slice of life cult classic on day one. The awkwardness it made everyone feel was amazing.

When I watched Napoleon Dynamite for the first time I laughed so hard because it reminded of my high school in rural Kansas…. And at the end when Napoleon danced I had the same feeling when I first saw Star Wars…. It was a triumph of a movie!
I was never close with my father and haven't spoken to him in years but we saw Napoleon Dynamite, and later Borat with the same reaction, in the theater since I was home from university. We both cracked up the entire time and had a lot of fun recalling our favorite parts during the car ride home. It was such a magical movie that two people who were essentially total opposites could find common ground and bond even a little bit over how funny and at times touching Napoleon Dynamite is.
I freaked out when I saw Pedro in Eastbound and Down and again later when I saw Uncle Rico in White Lotus I yelled at my screen, "Uncle Rico!!!" much to my now ex-gf's bewilderment. I tried to get her to watch ND but she said "it was boring" about 30 minutes in (said the same about The Princess Bride) and from there I knew the relationship was not built to last.
I'm currently 33 years old.
A couple friends and I saw once, I went back and saw it solo two more times and to this day I have never been as excited about a movie coming out on DVD as I was with Napoleon Dynamite. Picked it up day one.
I remember watching Napoleon Dynamite the opening weekend, at the Bella Botega Theatre, in Redmond, WA. The theatre was so packed, my buddy and I sat on the stairs. It was probably over fire code. I remember thinking, "This is insane!" Everyone was laughing hysterically, and understood the jokes. Everyone understood the rural Idaho humor. Still stands as one of the indie bests of all time.
Napolean Dynamite is one of 10 movies I watch every year without fail. Utter classic.

I still remember vividly seeing this in theatres back in the 5th grade.
I had the exact same reaction as he is describing at the Sundance premiere. They start the film with him standing there waiting for the bus. I don’t know what it was, but just the way he was standing there, squinting his eyes, shirt tucked in, Afro, I just immediately started laughing. And I genuinely was crying I was laughing so hard throughout the entire movie.
You know you’ve done something special when people walk out of the theater and immediately start imitating a character. Naploleon, Slingblade, Forrest Gump, Office Space, etc.

Amen to Slingblade. I still do Karl Childers imitations to my kids and occasionally at drive thrus. Drives them crazy, but I can’t help myself.

The first time I saw it I was actually mad, I wanted those two hours of my life back. The second time I thought "this is one of my favorite movies". I watch it at least twice a year now.
I walked out first watch. But it grew on me over the next two years. Maybe because it was all you would hear the white kids talking about or impersonating at school.
The driving over the Tupperware test when the thing explodes and he peels of.... hits my funny bone so hard. I still belly laugh after at least a dozen full watches.

The more times you watch it, the funnier it gets. I giggle my ass off every time I watch it. Frigging classic.

The second time I saw this in the theater, I laughed so hard and for so long at the part where Kip drives over the "nupont fiber woven bowl" that the rows in front and behind, started laughing again.
My brother and I had to drive a van just like that in high school (me) and college (my brother). Let me tell you, parents of our dates DID NOT like to see us rolling up in a van!
Jon did a phenomenal job of bringing the Napoleon character to life 😅 you know it because so many people quote his lines. Just love this movie ❤ All the characters were amazing 😊
Napoleon dynamite is one of the only movies I can say I’ve watched that every character is cast perfectly, from laffawnda to Pedro’s cousins all perfect
One of the most endearing movies ever.
That insight into the type of people (and the mentality) of those who go to film festivals in order to “witness” a great film before anyone else - I think that’s spot on. It’s also so beneficial to films that they get their most optimistic audience at the front end, so that they at least get a chance to be picked up by a distributor and given legs that it might not otherwise ever get.
I still remember the first time I saw Napoleon Dynamite and laughing uncontrollably. It was such a different and original movie. There aren't many movies that I remember watching the first time.

My kids introduced me to Napoleon Dynamite in the last couple of years. My daughter 20yrs gave my son the movie this Christmas and he 17yrs gave her the vote for Pedro shirt. It's funny how things come around again. I watched it with my son a couple of weeks ago and it was so fun to watch him laughing.
The first time I watched this, I thought it was stupid..... Watched it 2 more times, and realized the genius behind it!!

Not all artists get to create a rembrandt in their lifetime. Regardless of what happens to Jon Heder's career from this day on, Napolean is one of the most creative, entertaining movies of all time. So many awesome lines, moments, funny scenes. Love ya bro'...
No way its a Rembrandt. That would be considered the best of the best. This movie is definitely not at that level. Its a good movie....but more like a Warhol in the art world terms.

NGL, about 15 years ago I was at a club in Toronto, roof top lounge and lo and behold who’s the DJ? None other than Pedro!!
I love this movie. It’s so hard to describe the plot of it to someone, and I love that it was difficult to tell when it took place. It’s such quirky humor.
We decided to go see it because my sister had such a hard time explaining to us why we had to go see it. It really brought back growing up rural to me, especially the crazy ideas to make money and the crappy summer jobs - like the time I took my brother to work on a chicken farm and he threw up from the smell as we were meeting the boss, who didn't bat an eyelash.
The first scene is, to this day, the hardest I've ever laughed at a movie....possibly in my entire life. When he "subtly" throws the action figure out the window and then looks so unbelievably satisfied as it bounces around behind the bus....I had to leave the theater because I was laughing so hard I was convinced I was going to either pass out, throw up, or both. I still can't explain why that scene hit me so hard, but God what a great movie.
I'm so sad I missed this at the cinema. The film magazine 'EMPIRE' gave it a such lukewarm review that seemed to miss the point of the film and gloss over its humour. So I never went based on that review.
Fast forward to summer 2005 and my friend had it on DVD, within the opening minutes of the wrestling figure scene I was crying on the floor with laughter. And it just didn't stop throughout the whole film. I just remember going on to show it to anyone I could. Great film!
When Napoleon Dynamite was released on dvd I was on Christmas break, home from college and recovering from hernia surgery. I was confined to the couch, barely able to move because my abdomen area freaking hurt. I asked my mom to go out to Blockbuster Video to rent the movie and it was one of the biggest mistakes of my life because I was laughing the entire way through the movie in absolute pain. It was great.
The first time I watched Napoleon Dynamite, I didn't get it! A friend of mine came to visit me and talked me into watching with her, and I got it! The humor is very subtle and the movie is brilliantly written. I also had a couple of friends years ago who played COD with Jon and they said he was a blast to play with. He would do the Napoleon Dynamite voice, just to mess with the other players. 🤘🏻
Nappy Dyno Mite was the epitome of the awkwardness of growing up. Highly relatable to anyone that was ever a kid.
I was 23 uears old when I first saw it, and it cracked me up. There was this pal I used to hang out with, that was EXACTLY like Napoleon (but he didn't find his Debbie Lol).
My Dad loved that movie. He wore a 'Vote for Pedro" shirt in almost 30 countries when he traveled.
I had seen this in the theatre that summer. The entire film I my brain could not register what I was seeing. After the dance sequence is when my brain accepted it as a great and special film.

When the grapefruit smacks Uncle Rico's windshield and he screams will forever be one of the funniest things I've ever seen in a movie. First time it got me so good I did the long exhale laugh where you don't make a noise lol... more like a long wheeze 😆🤣 gets me every time. The deleted scene of Kip and La-fawn-duh's wedding and Napoleon rides up on the horse 🤣🤣😂😂 gonna have to watch it for the bazillionth time now. VOTE FOR PEDRO!

To be the guy who played N.P. you pretty much could run for US President and when on that alone! I'm serious... Who doesn't love NP and EVERY cast member. Epic Movie!
The dance at the end is the culmination of the under boy who turns out to be the coolest kid.
In 2004 I was 19 and worked as a projectionist at Cinemark. I previewed this film late one Saturday night by myself...and I wasn't exactly sober. It was pretty damn special watching that alone in a theatre laughing my ass off to myself, thinking "oh this movie is gonna CRUSH next weekend"

I knew Tina Majorino from her Alice in Wonderland tv series, and I knew and loved Deidreich Bader from the Drew Carrey Show.
But I get what he meant.
Yes,I knew her from about 5 movies before this one. I also knew Jon Gries ,Diedrich Bader,Haley Duff, Sandy Martin, etc. from other stuff as well. Only a few of the actors really hadn't done anything before or anything highly recognizable.
My kids (at the time, they are grown now) and I loved this movie!
It's sweet and warm.
The soundtrack is awesome, too!
I remember being in mdidle school when this movie came out and literally everyone had a Vote For Pedro shirt on and tried to emulate Napoleon's vocal inflections.
The first time I watched, I said to myself, “ WTF was that?” Then I watched it the se one time, and I haven’t stopped howling at this masterpiece since.

My girlfriend's work did a group costume competition a few years back, and her and a couple of her friends did all the main characters from Napoleon Dynamite... and they won! Greeeat movie.

My friend told me about the movie Napoleon Dynamite. He'd seen it and told me about it. He said, "You'll either love it and die laughing, or you'll not get it and hate it. There is no in between." Well, I died laughing at the first scene of Napoleon standing there, and then continued laughing through the whole thing! And I still laugh out loud when I re-watch it!
There's another option. You get it and still hate it and find it stupid and not even remotely funny.
Yeah, that's not true at all. I found some of it clever and funny and about the same amount tedious and really uninspired.
I’ve found that people who don’t get it or like just don’t get satire. I bet the same people dislike or don’t care for the Far Side cartoons either. Napoleon Dynamite is about laughing at ourselves and everyday life.
I think the reason Napoleon Dynamite gained fame so quickly is that it perfectly captured American rural awkwardness. Almost every small town school/family has the same power dynamics and awkward characters that you're forced to contend with because there's no where else to go. The movie to me is so funny and slightly horrifying because I lived experiences similar to those in the film.
I think you're right. It's roughly based on Jared Hess's experiences growing up. My father in law grew up in rural Idaho, and he was in tears over all the scenes with the farmers and the FFA. As weird as the movie is, it is surprisingly relatable.
I was driving Lloyd Kaufman to a book signing in Chicago and he told me to check out this new film called Napoleon Dynamite. I went to the theater with my friend to check it out. I liked it. Haven't seen it in a long time. I got to check it out again soon.

I remember the first time I saw this movie. It was the summer of 2003 and while scrolling through tv channels I came across a movie that was so weird and funny I could not stop watching it. I couldn’t tell if it was how people really lived in the state or what. Then the next few months I couldn’t stop telling everyone about it. I still watch it today!

I was late to the party. Only saw Napoleon about 7 yrs ago. Brilliant film. Loved it instantly.
I was on the floor laughing at the twisted humor in ND the first time I saw it on video at home not knowing what to expect. I had tears of laughter on my face. Jon Heder is a comedic genius
I was getting blips on my radar about the movie and I finally watched it in the summer of 2005. The first time I watched it I was very disoriented and like, "What the hell is going on here?" When it was over I immediately started it again, to this day Napoleon Dynamite is the only movie I've ever done that with, and the second time through I was less disoriented and loved it!!! It's a wonderful film, has meaning in so many different ways, and I love it.
The time machine scene still makes me fall out.

Napoleon Dynamite is one of the greatest pictures ever made.
To this day it's the only movie I've watched in theaters, then went back the very next night with my friends and payed to watch it again.
I used ND to teach friendship and loyalty in my Home Ec classroom. Took us 4 days to watch it. Kids had questionnaires to fill out as we watched. I watched that dang movie 6 classes a day for 4 days!
Love this movie & Jon. He was so funny in Blades of Glory too.
I will say it's one of those movies that I just have to watch when I see it on. And, Uncle Rico is simply an amazing character. Love that movie!!!

Growing up in Singapore, I remember I was in Secondary School, I saw Napolean Dynamite on HBO, & I was like “Hey thats Jon Heder!” & this was after I just watch Blades of Glory, & it was the best thing I’ve ever watched.
I watched this movie after it had already come out on dvd. I immediately fell in love with it.
When is was 16 My Grandpa made my whole family go and see the movie in a tiny little small beach town theatre while we were on vacation. We hadn’t even heard of the movie and knew nothing about it. Nobody wanted to go but we all just went to make Gramps happy.
Wow , that opening scene , Napoleon standing there with a spider web hanging from his hair…… my dad lost it …. Laughing hysterically, and we all joined in after that. The rest is history
Nice. Loved this movie. It is such a brilliant movie. I compare it to what The Office is to sitcoms. Kind of remember how some people didn’t love it at first but came around. But I didn’t say well you didn’t like it when it first came out. I guess Napoleon reminded me so much of people I actually knew growing up.

My Mormon buddies from Idaho/Utah took me to see this movie when it came out. Knowing them for years made it make so much more sense. One of my favorite comedy films for sure.
I rented this from the video store on my street when I was about 12. Had watched most of the ones there and took it not realising what it was and I could not stop laughing.
I love this movie. No gross out humor. No sexual innuendos. Just pure silly fun.

Tina! Get your food! I saw the movie in an independent movie theater with my brother and died laughing! I told everyone about it but it was out of the theater in a week. Then a few months later it took off and was in all the big theaters. I was so happy it caught on. Incredibly funny!
One day I came in just as my middle-school daughter was putting a tape in the VCR. She said, "It's a new movie, all my friends say it is great." I thought, it's probably terrible, but I'll watch it so I can do something with my daughter. I watched it for a few minutes without figuring out what was going on, until he went to class and they were talking about hunting wolverines, and I just lost it. Then he followed that up with that silly butterfly thing, and I was on the floor, pretty much for the rest of the movie. I must've watched it a dozen times over the years since then and it still makes me laugh - a lot.
When your guest is matching the pitch and inflection of your impressions, note for note, without even trying - carrying on as if it didn't happen is leaving gold on the table.

I grew up in a small, innocent neighborhood in the 70's, waiting for the bus, going to class with my friends, encountering strange kids once in a while, and even had a friend who was a first generation Mexican. The movie took me back to a happy, funny time. I couldn't throw the ball a quarter of a mile, but my older brother, whom I idolized, could. Loved the movie.
I went to see Napoleon Dynamite with my friends the first week it came out - summer after my freshman year of HS. None of us had ever heard of it - just picked it out randomly because we didn't know what to watch. 😅 We went to a daytime showing in the middle of the week and were the only people in the theater. I don't think I had ever laughed that hard at anything in my life up to that point. To this day, Napoleon is probably the most singularly unique, and uniquely funny, movie that I have ever seen.
i remember the splash that Napolen Dynamite landed with, it was so insane! that movie was an absolute obsession for our generation for a long time there.

This MIGHT sound stupid to you, but I'm from Italy, and I want to visit Preston, Idaho, just because of this movie.
I remember seeing the first trailer on MTV and thinking it looked incredible, I was only 8 but it stood out to me.
