  • The best Sportsbike gear - our gear guide KNOX ARMOUR
    You may have seen on our UA-cam channel and our socials that we ride a huge range of different motorcycles, from naked to adventure and custom to off-road but seeing as a large proportion of the team here at Knox ride sportsbikes we thought we would run you through the best sportsbike motorcycle gear we offer.
    Rewind 10-15 years ago, sport bike riders were limited to wearing one or two piece leather suits, whether that is for riding socially on the road or commuting to work every day. Who wants to wriggle into leathers every day? No thanks!
    Nowadays sports bikes are used much more widely than before, people are using them for touring, commuting, track days, social rides and racing so having protective solutions that cover more of these categories of ride is more important than ever. That’s where Knox comes in and we’ve put together a our selection of products to keep you protected, comfortable and looking stylish!
    Upper-body protection solutions
    Knox Max Dual Active BaseLayer - www.planet-knox.com/product/m...
    Starting with the base layer solution - the Max Dual Active baselayer. This long sleeve top is made using Melange fabric finished with HYDROCOOL® and SILVERPLUS® for enhanced wicking, drying and anti-bacterial properties. This top is extremely comfortable and offers impressive levels of breathability, moisture management and odour resistance.
    Knox Urbane Pro MK2 - www.planet-knox.com/product/u...
    Next we have the game changing Urbane Pro Mk2 shirt, the ultimate armoured shirt designed to be used on its own with No Jacket Required. For 2021 the Urbane Pro’s performance has been enhanced, with all-new materials we have managed to certify this product to CE EN17092 Level AA - a class normally reserved for heavier textiles or leather jackets. The Urbane Pro offers everything you could want in a motorcycle garment, it is breathable, comfortable, impact and abrasion resistant.
    Knox Zephyr Pro Jacket - www.planet-knox.com/product/m...
    Alternatively, we have the Zephyr Pro Jacket. A similar product to the Urbane Pro Mk2 shirt with a slightly different fit/feel. The Zephyr pro mirrors the same CE Level AA protection but fits more like a stand-alone jacket and is supplied with a chest protector and level 2 MicroLock armour all round.
    Lower Body protection
    Richmond Jean MK2 - www.planet-knox.com/product/r...
    Starting with the Richmond Mk2 jean, a modern tapered jean approved to CE Level AA. The Richmond is really all you would expect from your favourite pair of jeans but built for motorcycling. We have ensured top comfort both on and off the bike, incorporated stretch allows for all day comfort no matter what bike you are riding. Given the added input riders use when on sports bikes it is important such a product is comfortable.
    Shield Jean MK2 - www.planet-knox.com/product/s...
    The second option is our Shield jean, this is a true single layer riding trouser made from Spectra denim - The pinnacle of the Knox jean collection. The Shield offers incredible strength and durability with superior protection at CE Level AAA. Spectra itself is 40% stronger than aramid and fifteen times stronger than steel and is one of the world’s strongest and lightest fibres.
    Best Sportsbike Gloves
    Handroid POD MK4 - www.planet-knox.com/product/h...
    Riding a sports bike on the road, you want not only top protection, but you want practicality, feel and comfort as well, the CE approved short cuff Handroid Pod glove provides on all these fronts. The specification of the Handroid Pod glove is second to none, Exo-skeleton protection, Knox Scaphoid Protection System (SPS) and BOA lacing system but to name a few.
    Orsa Leather MK2 - www.planet-knox.com/product/o...
    Another CE approved short cuff glove hand armour solution is the Orsa Leather glove. This glove provides excellent protection, style and superior fit. As for protection, the glove features a 3 part knuckle guard and like all the gloves in the Knox range the Orsa features SPS on the palms. The Orsa leather glove goes well with any motorcycle kit you wear, simply secure the BOA system and you are away.
    So there you have it, the list of gear we wear on sports bikes. The beauty with this gear is its transferable, you can ride any bike you want with our kit. All the gear we produce is designed to be adaptable to the conditions and to the motorcycles you ride. Our products perform at such a high level so you can be assured protection is always available when wearing Knox.
    If you have any questions be sure to leave them in the comments and we’ll get back to you!

    • @michbushi

      actually, it would way more than "double" the abrasion resistance, in reality - when you double up layers, you get way more than the sum of their abrasion resistances (for various reasons).

      Hi Damien, some of our products are made in the UK.. however, unfortunately, that doesnt mean there wont be customs charges due to the absolute nightmare that is "Rule of Origin" and includes YKK zips and some fabrics that arent made in the UK. In anycase, you would be charged ex VAT, but then have to pay it on import (so that is as per), but there would be a small duty payment to make of around 3% plus a small clearance fee. I own quite a lot of Knox kit: action shirt (level 2 armour upgrade), knox Handroid pod MK4 and Orsa gloves. However, I'm concerned that you are using and recommending textile kit for drag racing or spirited road riding, which riders who weren't born yesterday know are NOT fit for purpose.
    Unfortunately, EN17092 is a broken standard. It's way too lenient. It's essentially a rubber stamp standard for unsuitable materials. I'll explain why. First of all, samples are only dropped from 10mm - this is less than an inch. The kinetic energy is only 0.33 joules. This is not realistic since impact points will fall (down directly or even in a pendulum motion - same impact speed). Let's say we land on our elbow from riding position - that's a 1.2m fall with 5kg of a typical arm - the kinetic energy is 60 joules. With this realistic energy, nylon, polyester, UHMWPE (Dyneema, spectra, aramlith etc) will burst on or close to impact, leaving you nothing to slide on, except maybe your armour. Secondly, the concrete tile used in EN17092 (Darmstadt) machine has a very low co-efficient of friction (0.52) when calibrated with cotton canvas - this is not typical of roads anywhere, except maybe the German autobahn. You're more likely to fall on chip-and-seal (0.9-1.0 friction) or asphalt (0.6-0.7). So their tile is too smooth.
    I've been conducting a research project with realistic drop testing (1 metre height on medium asphalt at 45km/h to stop) and only cowhide (1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.7mm perforated) and 2 layers of dyneema denim (62% UHMWMPE) has survived the impact and slide. This is a city speed drop on an average asphalt road surface. I've done close to 100 drop tests with various common materials used in motorcycle clothing and whole garments.
    So far, garments with A, AA, and AAA - also EN13595 level 2 - textiles have failed to survive even 1 drop. Essentially, the tests are useless because they don't drop from realistic height (for zones 1 and 2 - impact and high abrasion zones, per EN13595).

    • @KnoxArmour
      @KnoxArmour  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, firstly, thank you for your support of Knox, we appreciate it.
      However, with regards the main point of your comment, I must come back on the strongest terms and rebut all of your comments, assumptions and findings.
      Firstly, EN17092 is entirely fit for purpose and anyone saying anything different either doesn’t have a full grasp of what is involved and/or needs to be corrected. The working group involved in creating it have many decades of experience and is formed from the most experienced and qualified people in the industry, from test houses, to scientific experts, Doctors and industry practitioners. Our own Geoff Travell, one of the longest serving members of over 26 years within the European working group, invented motorcycle armour 40 years ago and is happy to put his name against the EN17092 standard. The standard is fully ratified and fit for purpose… end of story.
      Secondly, lets address your own findings and testing apparatus… a scooter with a drain pipe strapped to it with a 5kg dumbbell sliding through it with fabric attached presumably to the bottom of said dumbbell. A terminal speed is reached on your scooter, you drop said dumbbell and then allow the scooter to come to a stop. There are so many fundamental flaws, inaccuracies and variables in your test apparatus that mean it could never be taken seriously. First flaw, you are using the inertia of your scooter and you sat on it to pull the test piece along. This is entirely un-realistic and represents a dragging force of anywhere between 200-300kg depending on the scooter and rider weight so significantly more than would ever be real. Secondly, there is no consistency in the tarmac you are using and it is not flat and has bumps in the road and there is no control of this. Obviously, repeatability is really important for any lab test, plus where there are bumps in the road and the dumbbell slides through the drain pipe, an extra and totally random snagging force is applied.
      Thirdly, no person in real life stays in a prone position for the duration of a slide. The body moves and tumbles and lots of different points of contact are being made throughout the accident time. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly the accident data shows that most accidents occur in urbane areas at 50kph - 30 mph and a significant number of these result in contact with a solid object whereby far the main danger is impact not abrasion.
      We appreciate your support and that you use Knox products, but before you try to undermine our products on a public platform, please do understand that EN17092 and our own products respectively have been rigorously created and developed and are fit for purpose with protection, practicality, flexibility and comfort in mind.
      All the best, Aaron KNOX

    • @The-Splat
      @The-Splat 3 роки тому +3

      @@KnoxArmour Aaron, I'm afraid it is widely recognised that there are issues with EN 17092 (a view that independent experts have voiced). What is more, MotoCAP test results have shown many garments provide inadequate protection despite their EN 17092 certification. For many of us, three things sunk the credibility of EN 17092:
      1. It set the bar very low indeed. Deakin University found that regular denim (!) can pass the abrasion resistance test required for an A-rating. Indeed, one well-known manufacturer sells regular denim jeans with knee armour and an A-rating.
      2. It will be the end of higher protection levels (au revoir to EN 13595 Level 2, the standard I’d want for track days).
      3. Online transparency: while Knox deserves credit for being open about its ratings (A, AA or AAA), some manufacturers hide them. (I’m looking at you, Dainese! What have you got to hide?) And Rukka is still using a loophole via a Finnish notified body to avoid giving its gear an A, AA or AAA.
      I agree with you that most crashes occur below 30 mph - it's what the data bear out. But a significant number happen above 30 mph too. As I consider Knox a premium brand, I would be disappointed if Knox products were only good under 30 mph.

    • @low-costgearbudgettour714
      @low-costgearbudgettour714 3 роки тому +2

      @@The-Splat What you hear in public versus private from manufacturers is vastly different. The Darmstadt machine is a disaster for riders but great for manufacturers. It might be fixable but the speed of bureaucracy is slower than 30mph :)
      I've offered Aaron a closer look at my results and he hasn't chosen to take me up on it. His reference to "pulling force" is ludicrous. There's just kinetic energy and static load. Whether the same is pulled by the QE2 or a scooter is irrelevant unless that force is on top of the sample. The only important factors are the impact (in joules) and the distance. Also the shape of the sample holder. Mine is anatomically similar to an elbow or knee whereas Cambridge and Darmstadt use flat sample holders. We are not flat!
      I use armour in the tests when appropriate. Nobody I know of is doing that in repeatable tests.
      I've now done approx 85 drop tests with 50 different material samples in my study. It's a public domain project and I share my results with several well-known European brands, test houses, PPE experts and riders. They have asked me to continue testing since nobody else is doing this kind of real world test on an average asphalt road, realistic drop height (1 metre) and average speed of an accident (28mph / 45km/h). My impact is 60 joules, roughly equivalent to an elbow drop from 1.2 metres (typical elbow height in riding position).
      So far, 2 layers of competition grade cowhide has done the best, surviving 11 drops without failure (1st layer holed but the 2nd layer is just scuffed) with an accumulated slide distance of 200 metres. Double layers of dyneema managed 90 metres (5 impacts), whereas 1 layer only managed 6-9 metres (in multiple tests). The double layer test was an interesting one because the melting UHWMPE of layer 1 added a low-friction glaze to layer 2 making it go much further than you'd expect.
      Most textiles go about 1-6 metres yet you'll slide about 14 metres from 45km/h to stop. If you have armour in place, you'd be fine but without it, you'd be losing skin and maybe bone.
