Thank you so much for this video...my husband died 2 years ago.and not having funds to hire someone to do repairs I was able to do this on my own. So between him making me assist on projects and teaching me about tools and your instructional video I installed the glass and it looks so professional.
My husband passed away in 2021 and I'm doing all my home repairs as well. So thankful for UA-cam repair videos. I'm a Mrs. Fixit anyway so I don't mind doing my own repairs.
Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you ! I have 2 broken windows in my mobile home and the local glass company wanted to charge me $90.00 for each window replacement . I watched your video and went to Lowes bought the glass and the other things I needed and replaced the windows myself . That may not seem such a huge thing to most but I am a disabled woman and have no one who can help me with any home repairs or anything that needs replacing . I am so happy that I found your video .
Hey Tammy...I found the greatest company called swisco (www.swisco.com) If you have any door, window or other little things that need replacing.. You cam send them pictures and measurements of the broken pieces and they will suggest the new piece that will work, no matter what the brand or age of the part !! Cost me less than $20 to replace broken window pieces where HD wanted $300 for a new window.. I'm a small disabled woman, and love this company's help
Thanks for the tip about Swisco.com - you just saved me some money. I broke a corner key on one of my windows and was clueless on what they were even called, much less where to buy them.
Cool guy! I needed that! Now I can do my aluminum-framed widow replacement with more confidence.Your feature is likely to save me a few hundred that a handyman can cost.Thank you!
Thank you so much! My toddler just broke the pane in our front bedroom window and I was freaking out a little until i saw this video. Now I feel confident I can save myself a bill and fix it myself!
I'd like to take out the time to say thank you the video was very informative I know a lot of people say that this shit is self-explanatory but when youve never witnessed this type of work or never owned your own home its overwelming sometines.a little bit of guidance goes a long way I really appreciate the video I didn't need to watch all of it but the part that I needed you showed me thanks for taking out your time.
Maybe things have changed in the last few years, but i went to both Lowes and Home Depot, and I couldn't find the strips. Asked around and no one knew what I was talking about (but of course). Ended up just putting the glass in with "window glazing caulk" which was like $5 and I think it was Latex based but can't remember. Ran my finger over it, and it ended up looking pretty good. Found plenty online searching for vinyl bead glazing strips, but didn't wanna wait.
thx for the complements. i took a small sample of the broken glass and the hardware store matched the thickness. im sure you can match it with online stores as well.
What do you suggest would be the best way to clean it? Right now all the glass is removed, only thing left is a film of dust. My idea was maybe a 3/16" wide brass wire brush, that would make the channel shine perfectly or just use a rag, alcohol & flat head screwdriver! The silicone, i plan on making a 1/8 bead all the way around hopefully in the center so it will spread on both sides. From the looks of it, its mostly so it doesnt vibrate inside the frame.
just what i needed,I can see this home built back in the 70's (iI think) anyway I have this type of window did a crappy job.but now that I've seen this it's helpful. Thanks
Thank you so much for posting this! One of our front windows was broken ages ago, and my dad was very upset because a local firm wanted to charge us three to five hundred dollars. Wasn't sure how to go about this but now that I know I'll surprise my dad and fix it for him. Once again thank you. Ace!
Its hard to see what happens with the silicone when you put the vinyl strip on? I have an old house with alluminum windows, and the strips are deteriorating, and I need to see with more detail. So te silicone is only applied on the outside, then the vinyl gets pushed into the silicone?
My window is on the 2nd floor and the strips are on the outside..there a way I can take the widow panes out fix them and slide them back in? Standing on a ladder 2 floors up is a bit risky for me..
This is exactly what i was looking for. My 3 year old went butt first into a window and i'd rather pay $30 to fix it myself than +100 to have someone else do it.
Great video - thank you! You said to take 1/16 off of each side, is that 1/16 off of the top AND 1/16 off of the bottom as well as the left & right side (for a total of 1/8 off of the length & width)?
Its a 2 track aluminum storm window thats on the interior side of a mobile home! The track that the window sits in is level all the way around....(One side doesnt stick out further then the other) The track is 1/4" thick....The frame is really flimsy....I took it out of the big frame in order to replace the glass...I was thinking about taking out the top corners, run a bead of rubber silicone all around the track & then replace the glass & install back into window frame! Would that work?
I asked a local glass shop about the possibility of using Lucite S-A-R or similar in an aluminum frame sliding glass door and was flatly told it won't work, because the plastic expands and contracts far more than glass with temperature changes, going from binding and bowing at high temperature to being so loose at low temperature that it could fall out of the frame. Also, a strong impact that would break glass might not break the plastic, but it could flex a large sheet enough to pop out of the frame, precisely what one would _not_ want for security reasons. Plastic glazing only works for small panes or on frames that have been specifically designed for plastic glazing.
I was looking to find some video like this one. My 1971 house had a broken window glass broken and several "window guys" told me that there is no way to replace the glass only. "You need to replace everything" they say. Mine window is those one the move up/down and the worse part is that there was installed one storm glass between the window and the external side of the house. I would love to get some more idea how to work on it.
Beware of Sabotage. You don't need caulking to hold trim in place when the plastic lip slips inbetween pane of glass , frame of window and hooked frame edge for the leading edge.
What do you use if your window doesnt have vinyl strips like shown in the video?? This window that i have looks like a black rubber gasket that is on both sides of the glass! It was thrown away with the broken glass 8 mths ago and now i wished i had saved it!
I have aluminum snap in rather than vinyl. I can't seem to find the replacement snap in. Do you have a recommendation? Also, the pane needs to be slightly smaller than the window fixture itself correct?
Thanks for posting this. I’m about to attempt this myself tomorrow! My jaw just about hit the floor when I saw the trash can in the background of shot. I’m also in Edmond! Lol what are the odds? Are there any benefits to using plexi vs pane glass?
Thanks I had no idea how to replace the one that broke over a year ago. I covered it in clear vinyl when it broke. I didn't know what else to do. One question... How think was that plexiglass? Looks like a professional job.
Good evening, I'm a professional in the area of aluminum frames and ordinary glasses, laminated, tempered, acoustical term ... I want to go to the USA, have available employment in this area?
sounds like its a double pane glass with some type of gas sealed inside. you can bring it to a glass store and they can fix it up as new for a lot less than buying a new one.
This video no longer helps the average DIY homeowner because they stopped selling these snap-in vinyl glazing beads at brick-and-mortar hardware stores. I think the reason is that the dimensions and shape of the beads are as varied as automobile tires. There is no one-size-fits-all and it's costly to stock every type. My solution was to use Window Glazing Compound or putty such as Dap 33. There's another one made by UGL called Glasol, both are available at HD, Lowes and Ace's and you can use them for metal or wood sashes.
? i broke one of my vinyl windows, how much would a contractor or glass company charge me to install another piece of glass with it being vinyl windows and easier to do.
I have old aluminum windows in my house . I want to keep them , but they need some help , like stay open and new screens. Are there people out there that specialize in refurbishing old windows . I don't want new ones ??
DIY Tinker Nobody in my local Lowe’s knows what this is. I also looked it up online using your wording and was unable to find it. Could you please provide a link to this vinyl snap-in strip product anywhere. I reside in Raleigh NC. Thanks so much for your help!
I'm sorry but this is not the right way to replace the glass. The glass should always be removed first. With a glass cutter he should have cut smaller slices in the glass and then it can easily be removed from the frame. In cases where the glass has been hot glued a heat gun is used on the inside frame of the window to heat up the glue and then again the glass is easily removed. The strips are not sold at Home Depot or at least not here in Florida. Had he done the way I mentioned 9 out of 10 times the strips can be reused
ive cant watch anymore hope your not a professional I been doing glass 25 years I would have that done and look brand new even using the old bead in 20 minutes tops

Yeah these Homo Depot people nowadays know nothing about their job. They hire anyone.
Lol damn I can't find strips either
I got mine at Ace Hardware.
@@205KingWoolenAce Hardware sells them back where they cut glass. Got one to repair my broken glass last week.

Thanks brother!!!! Literal lifesaver man, replaced the window that my old lady made me break cause I was pissed off. Thanks for the video!
Afraid that's all you mate. No one can 'make you' break a window if your pissed off. Sounds like you should be looking at anger management next mate
I wanna say...THANK YOU!!! 😊 THIS HELPED ME TO WHERE I WAS ABLE TO REPLACE MY OWN.

I did used heat gun to soften the old glue then I did removed the glass without breakage from aluminum window.

WD 40 will soften silicone. Simply wet it good, give it 5 to 15min. to work, and remove.
Where can I find that vinyl trim? Home Depot don’t carry it anymore
Look for PVC leaf seal online. Home Depot still sells it.
before breaking the broken glass ALWAYS PUT A PACKING TAPE ON IT!!!
there is a tool to get the strip out first without breaking it. Once it is out, you can bend the glass bits outward until the glue lets go.
What is the tool called and where do you get it?
I asked a local glass shop about the possibility of using Lucite S-A-R or similar in an aluminum frame sliding glass door and was flatly told it won't work, because the plastic expands and contracts far more than glass with temperature changes, going from binding and bowing at high temperature to being so loose at low temperature that it could fall out of the frame. Can you put a vinyl windows without disturbing the marble sill ??

At what time you placed the glass? That's the most critical part of the job
Just what I needed to see!!
Beware of Sabotage.
You don't need caulking to hold trim in place when the plastic lip slips inbetween pane of glass , frame of window and hooked frame edge for the leading edge.
What thickness plexiglass did yo use?
Thank you for this video, was very helpful.

When did you put the window glass back lol
What do you use if your window doesnt have vinyl strips like shown in the video?? This window that i have looks like a black rubber gasket that is on both sides of the glass! It was thrown away with the broken glass 8 mths ago and now i wished i had saved it!
I tried using silicone and It did not hold very well, any recommendation, it is plexiglass to aluminium..
Thanks
3 WORDS. WHITE LITHIUM GREASE! it took me less than 10mins, grease front and back. Thank you jesus
I have aluminum snap in rather than vinyl. I can't seem to find the replacement snap in. Do you have a recommendation? Also, the pane needs to be slightly smaller than the window fixture itself correct?
1/8inch smaller

Think he needs to put some of the trash on the floor into that trash can.

thanks bro! really helpful
What's the cost for replacement ?
What is that vinyl trim called? How do I ask for it @ the store? Thnx
sure, you could do it like that too. it might not look pretty, but it will work. clean it very well before you put the bead of silicone.

Went to both and they don’t have them even asked for help and they don’t cary them.
Nice very helpfull, need to know more
what is that Vinyl strip called from home depot? I got this thing down, except for that part.

It's called vinyl snap-in glazing.
sounds like its a double pane glass with some type of gas sealed inside. you can bring it to a glass store and they can fix it up as new for a lot less than buying a new one.

5:16 states HD & Lowes

Its called vinyl strip snap-in

thanks
very help full im trying to wedatherize me aptment
thank you
Thank you!!
god bless you
Heat the strip first its a lot easy.
What happened to the part where he puts the glass in? You know the important part. 🙄
I’m here by i kicked my window in when I was on my hammock
and I think I will buy plexiglass as well instead of glass
And if you don't allow for the plexiglass to expand 8 times what glass does during hot humid weather, it will bow out and deform.
109 in the summer, storm and hail. Still clear as glass and holds up great.
"Always where gloves"
*immediately removes gloves

easy as, thx
“Always wear gloves.” That thing on your left hand is barely a glove bud... haha.
thanks alot
Clear caulk? We gone
take strip out first

wouldn't have happened if the glass was actually transparent aluminum
Chaulk?
Silicone!
So basically if you can do it.....we can do it! haha

Im fairly sure he knows what hes doing. Go and troll somewhere else

a box cutter has a retract feature for a reason. so you dont swing around the blade while working.
I totally agree. I have replaced windows and the first thing I do is consider safety.
I was not trolling I was looking how to replace in aluminum.....
ive cant watch anymore hope your not a professional I been doing glass 25 years I would have that done and look brand new even using the old bead in 20 minutes tops

I was looking for the actual putting in of the glass without breaking it or getting cut. The rest of it seems pretty self explanatory.
