Grand Cherokee ZJ Manual Transmission Swap Part 1

- This time I'm starting with a virtually bone stock '97 ZJ Grand Cherokee Limited. In this video, I get the Jeep's 5.2 V-8 bolted to a NV3500 5-speed and a NV231 transfer case out of a '94 Dodge Dakota.
Interested in a ZJ manual conversion? I've got parts at StickShiftZJ.com - Авто та транспорт
Man this is exactly what I was looking for. Knowledgeable and straight forward. Really appreciate you taking the time to make this video!
Thanks, I'm glad it helped!
Dude your the man! In the middle of bringing a 96 zj with the 5.2 to back to life. Really considering the Manual transmission swap as well.
Thanks! They are a lot more fun to drive with a 5-speed, I highly recommend the swap...
after getting recommended your videos, lbg very quickly became one of if not my most favorite mechanic channels. every video is a treat❤
I’ve watched many auto to manual swaps from Acura integras to fox body mustangs and sir you are very smart! Thanks for passing along the information to help build a hotrod jeep!
Thanks, I appreciate that!
sweet install
I had a sweet 2dr & 2wd XJ with a 5 speed, and that was the 2nd best part.
#1 = 4.0
#2 = Toyota trans
very nice , very nice
Badass, love these 5.2’s with the NV3500 would love to see a Durango NV3500 swap haha i was going to say, i bet this swap with Dakota NV3500 has shift tower further back whereas the Ram has NV3500 shifter tower more like the first swap you did, i learned that just from differences between Ram and Dakota NV3500. Dakota V8 with NV3500 have the NV3500HD with lower gearing etc the ram has a little wider gears like the GM NV3500 with shift tower more forward by dash where as Dakota is its own NV3500 lower gears shift tower further back etc
I know this is a but late but for anyone doing this swap you can just use a dodge Dakota crank sensor with a 5 speed it gives you the proper clearance and all you have to do trim the crank sensor tab a little to let it plug in
Your badass man
Thanks!
thanks Bro!
Would have been nice if the sensor was located by crank pulley like Gm .
Having the ability to go 2wd without full time 4x4/AWD is also beneficial.
the other way to make it work is use the standard trans crank trigger they are shorter
The 5.9 / NV3500 swap turned out excellent! I appreciate all of your help, and advice. ~
I have videos up on my channel if anyone's interested in the final results, but I'm looking into exhaust clearance issues, so excuse the leak!
No problem, glad its up and running! I watched your videos, it looks like a lot of fun to drive!
@@LowBuckGarage It's a heck of a lot of fun. I just worry about everyone's favorite thing to say about it: "NV3500s are rated for 300ft lbs, and 5.9s put out around 350"
The 360 in this Jeep is a bit tired compared to even some of the 318 builds I've seen in other Rams, Dakotas, and Jeeps with NV3500s. Heck, one guy even said I could have gone with an AX15 and been okay, but others will tell you that even a 318 will kill an AX15. I guess only time will tell for sure.
Besides the exhaust leaking (I'm planning on a new exhaust when the front end has an inch or two more clearance, and wont crumple it again) The front shaft, and the shifter boot is the issue I'm having. I wanted to go with a locker like you did on the 4.0, but I also do more streeting than offroad. Was hoping to find an LSD for this, but that's a whole other, pretty expensive story.
@@5.9manualzj I'm glad its fun, that's the most important part! I've got a NV3500 in my drag racing ZJ with a 5.2, and I'm wide open on every shift. So far so good. The only people I've talked to that have actually blown one up had them in the 1/2 ton full size pickup. I bet that as long as you don't beat on it too badly you'll be ok, FWIW.
Just yesterday I swapped in a rear axle with a factory LSD into the 5.2 ZJ in this video. I picked the whole axle up for $200, just missing brakes. Turns out it also needs one wheel bearing, but still a pretty good deal. I had put a want ad in on craigslist for a 44HD, and the deal came to me, so they are out there. Good luck!
@@LowBuckGarage Yeah I have't lost any stoplight drags yet with this thing. Don't need to take it up too high with the 5.9 to get power. I've so far only taken it to a bit over 4000rpm, and had plenty of fun. Can't wait to get the exhaust done.
What was the 44HD out of? Just another Jeep? or could I find a Durango or Dakota axle?
@@5.9manualzj My 44HD was from another ZJ. Apparently they were also in the WJ's, but with a different bolt pattern, and probably different suspension brackets. You could also get the Ford 8.8 from an explorer, which is a popular swap but much more work.
Go with the 242 ...lose the ujoint style front-axle shafts for cv style shafts and that is how you get awd with these jeeps ...
That's the first video of your playlist "V-8 ZJ Manual Trans Swap Jeep Grand Cherokee" but you start off by explaining something and saying "in the last video"...
well... would be great if you could make the playlist complete. I think there's some major introduction missing here.
hey sorry for the questions, love your videos by the way, VERY informative!!!! the clutch cover to flywheel bolts, I found the actual size from mopar, the actual P/N has been discontinued, so I just got grade 5 bolts from lowes. most of my bolts have come from there in preparation of my swap. so did you use a lock washer on the clutch cover to flywheel bolts? im asking because iam unsure as to what ACTUALLY keeps them held into place, ya know with all that RPM haha
I used lock washers on the pressure plate bolts, and no washers but locktite on the flywheel bolts.
Would the same process for the WJ? I want it manual.
Hi sir! Awesome build! I apreciate if u can make a swap like this on my 98 zj 4.0
I built my 4.0 5-speed swap before I started doing videos, but I have a bunch of tech tips in this playlist ua-cam.com/play/PLfyVixelWstCOiN4wFl-1Dr4ADOTKzqA8.html Its a pretty straightforward swap to put in the AX-15, I do an overview of my completed one in this list, too.
Disculpe como le ISO para adaptar los cables del velocímetro
I have been thinking my 98 5.9ltd needed a manual swap.
I wonder how hard it would be to make a t-56 work!?
why not just get a crank sensor for the dakcota?
Got a question. Can you do this with a 2003 Grand Cherokee with a 4. No ú
0 l people are saying you can't
hey were you ever able to find the actual bolts for the six flywheel to engine bolts? and what about the clutch cover to flywheel bolts? do you have a part number or size for those bolts? thank you for your time
I'm still using those modified bolts, but ARP sells the right length as P/N 240-2801, 7/16-20 x .875, under $20 for a set at Jeg's. On the pressure plate I used some regular 3/8-16 x 1" bolts. The factory ones have a slightly enlarged shoulder to center the PP, so that would be better if you want to do it right. I haven't had a problem with mine yet, FWIW.
i was wondering could you use a manual crank sensor
The plug was different, so I would have had to splice the wires. For me, I felt better just making a spacer than chancing a bad connection.
Low-Buck Garage, great video! Is it possible to convert a WJ to manual?
Thanks! Its definitely possible, both the 4.0 and 4.7 motors have manual transmissions that bolt up. I've never tried it, so I don't know the exact clutch pedal or computer solutions, but I do know that those problems can be solved with some patience and trial and error.
Do the 5.2 and the 4.0 share the same output shaft length, splines, etc? Or even bellhousing? I'd love a manual in my 96 with a 4.0 straight seis
No, the 5.2 and 4.0 are different. However, you're in luck because the 4.0 is an even easier swap! You need a AX-15 out of a 4.0 Cherokee or Wrangler, and its almost a bolt in. I just loaded a video on my 4.0 ZJ with the 5-speed swap.
The 231 transfer case that you used. Did you have to swap your stock 4x4 shifter? I ask because I have a 5.2L with the 249 transfer case stock. I have a 231 to go in the jeep, but I dont have the 231 transfercase shifter. So can I use my 249 shifter and just swap the plastic gear indicator on top?? Hope that makes sense
You can use the stock linkage, but you may need to change out the tab on the transfer case that shifts it and adjust the linkage length. The 231 does with with the stock shifter, my 4.0/5-speed ZJ uses that set-up and it works fine. Do a search for 249 to 231 swap, there's a lot of people that have done good write-ups about it.
👏👍🇧🇷
My jeep is a 97 zj with 5.2L with automatic. I have a NV3500 from a 98 ram 1500 which had a 5.2L so can I use my starter? Or do I have to get one for a 98 ram 1500. For this swap???
You'll need the Ram one. The starter's on the opposite side with the manual trans. Also, it will interfere with the exhaust on the ZJ, one of my videos covers manifold and header options.
I have a cherokee zj 1993 5.2 4x4 and I want to convert to the standard of which trucks can I get the transmission
The best fit is the NV3500 from a Dakota. The one from the full size Ram can be made to work, but the shifter is too far forward to fit nicely.
Do you still sell the pedals I want one soooo bad
Yep, I list them on ebay as seller stickshiftzj, and I have links to the listings on stickshiftzj.com
How much u charge have 5.2 Auto would love a 5speed
The 5-speed is way better than the auto, but I don't work on other people's cars. I'm way too backed up with my own projects!
What did you use for the clutch an brake pedals I have a rigged up set up I Ben useing on my old jeep but my new jeep I just got I have everything to swap it but a different pedal for the clutch so I don't have to take stuff out of my old jeep I'd like to find the right set up
For the brake pedal I just sawed off half of the stock one. I've got a video of that here: ua-cam.com/video/MRB5NZmtnbw/v-deo.html On the clutch pedal, I make reproductions of the stock bracket and use a modified TJ pedal, video of that here: ua-cam.com/video/FbDEH0ryxZ8/v-deo.html If you're interested, I sell those through stickshiftzj.com. I make more when I run out, so if I don't have any available right now I'll have more soon.
I'd like to order one ill have to check them out thanks man
hi, i was wondering if i can also do this to my 1998 jeep grand cherokee 5.9 limited??
Yes, the '96-'98 are almost identical, and there's only slight differences for '93-'95. The one in the video is a '97, but I've also converted my '96 daily driver and '94 race jeep.
@@LowBuckGarage Thx for the quick reply, what is your email?

I need an automatic 44re for my jeep Haha
Would this transmission be compatible with a 99 durango 5.2?
I expect it would, I bet you can transfer a lot of dakota stuff into a durango. I've never tried it, though!
@@LowBuckGarage I have a cammed 95 dakota with a 5.2l, 5 speed transmission, 4.88 gears, but I'm terrified to start this🤣👍
@@deezee2694 Sounds like a sweet truck! You'll probably need 2nd gen dakota interior parts, so I'd get those parts and get the Durango all prepped for the trans swap first.
Like it was made for it... Cause I just made it for it. lol
Where are you located? I’d like to pay you to swap my 98 2wd zj to a 4wd.
I wish I had the time, but I am just jammed up with projects. The 4wd swap is really easy, if you can find a cheap 4x4 version, just park them next to each other and switch parts. You shouldn't even need any fabrication at all, everything just bolts on.
Hey. Your video very helpful, thank you for that. I'm starting my swap. Everything going good but only problem i can't find bearing sleeve adapter. In which store you buy this bearing adapter ? Can you help me please. Thank you.
I found it at O'reillys, but others carried it. Try P/N FC69907, that should be the adapter and bearing. They didn't have the adapter alone available there, but the whole unit was pretty cheap.
@@LowBuckGarage Thanks for the answer.
Just bought this bearing. I'm happy. I can now continue my project. Thank you for helping. Good luck in new projects. Waiting for new videos.
Would you be interested in doing this for me? 96 5.2 4x4. Lmk if so with an email and I’ll reach out. Thank you
Sorry, I don't even have enough time to do the projects I already have started. I can't take on any more, I'd never get them done!
