Der Ring des Nibelungen, a famous production from Bayreuth 1976, recorded 1980. Jeannine Altmeyer as Sieglinde, Peter Hofmann as Siegmund. Conducted by Pierre Boulez, directed by Patrice Chéreau.
Orgasmic! Wonderful singing, acting and direction, and Boulez whipping up a veritable storm of passion from the orchestra pit (very unusual from this usually highly controlled conductor). The best ending to Act 1 of Walküre ever!
It just doesn't see possible that two players could look so perfect for these roles - tall, fit, handsome and blond - and also sing this difficult music so well. Independent probabilities multiply. This performance seems to defy the Laws of Math.
Peter Hofmann forever.
All these years and many ring cycles later this STILL remains the best. I agree with (I presume from what I have read) all the other comments. So many thanks for the post!
@rusalkaism I attended the 1976 production, the third cycle, and forever Walkure will be Peter Hofmann and Jeannine Altmeyer. I know other artists have done just as well, in some productions perhaps better; I don't care. Firstly is the personal association having attended live, but moreover there was such power and chemistry between those two... RIP Peter Hofmann, you are missed.
This performance HOOKED me on Wagner! I was in a music appreciation class in college, in my second term or so of German classes, and a video was played of this. 2:04 to the end of this clip still gives me chills. I agree with what a lot of people are saying here...this is so hot and passionate. The leitmotifs from 3:02 on, the "So blühe denn Walsungen-Blut!"... incredibly stunning. A little over a decade later, it still completely enthralls me! The orchestration is absolutely perfect.
These two burn the stage with their white-hot passion---makes the heart pound!...and these two make it utterly believable that the characters are brother and sister....the most exciting, sexy and wonderfully disturbing Act 1 ever!
That last line is brilliant, disturbing, and so tongue and cheek on so many levels. Wagner must've been having a good chuckle writing the ending of this act.
I heard him do this part at San Francisco Symphony - not the opera. The Symphony did just the first act. He sang with Paul Plishka and Jesse Norman. He was wonderful. My date who sang in the chorus of the SF Opera kept saying - " Why doesn't the opera get real tenors like this guy?". What a large fresh and lovely voice. The opera had done the whole Walkure just earlier that season with Vickers. Sp that was quite a compliment. Hoffman was the best Heldentenor in the world except for maybe Vickers or King. He was certainly better than Kollo, Windgassen or Thomas. I heard all of them in their best roles. Hofmann should have recorded Lohengrin. Actually he should have filmed it. He certainly looked the part.
The resonance of that third-to-last chord and the curtain falling are the two most epic things about this scene. Oh yeah, and Altmeyer going down on the ground like, "Come at me, bro."
He was successful in Opera and Pop for years at the same time and didn´t become a Pop-Star because of "over-singing/lack of technique". Fact is, his carreer faded after putting the German "The Phantom of the Opera" on stage and that´s because he became very, very ill (Parkinson desease) at only 45. He didn´t make it public for years. Nevertheless I think you agree -watching this here- that it is damn sad that such a strong, healthy and handsome appearing Guy is strucked down like that..
what incredible chemistry, palpable sexual tension, fierce, bold and beautiful. I could go on listing adjectives but I won't. Simply stated, this is wonderful.
@rusalkaism Yes and no. It's a faithful recreation of the actual performances, recorded without cuts. But the taping was done without an audience, Mainly to allow for better camera placement. Mr Hofmann suffers from Parkinson's decease, and has done much to raise awareness of this affliction, Since quitting opera he's had considerable success in musicals.
Yes, I know that he has Parkinson's, but I believe that he actually lost his voice for reasons other than his disease. I do not think that he looks "strong" as you say (he needs a little more bulk for that.) I know that it is heavily in dispute amongst operaphiles, but I believe he should have been heavier to be a great Heldentenor. If you compare his recordings with other great Heldentenors, you hear that he pushed attempting the robustness of tone the greats had, thus shortening his career.
Peter Hoffmann lost his voice because of over-singing/lack of technique and went on to be a famous German pop star. I know that's common knowledge for most, but some might like to know...
Oh mein Gott.
Orgasmic! Wonderful singing, acting and direction, and Boulez whipping up a veritable storm of passion from the orchestra pit (very unusual from this usually highly controlled conductor). The best ending to Act 1 of Walküre ever!
Unvergessen ! Eine der besten Produktionen bis heute !
It just doesn't see possible that two players could look so perfect for these roles - tall, fit, handsome and blond - and also sing this difficult music so well. Independent probabilities multiply. This performance seems to defy the Laws of Math.
Peter Hofmann was my first Parsifal and Siegmund on stage. I will never forget his performances.
Schicksal ❤😢😢😢, so schön und so unendlich!!!
Peter Hofmann forever.

This is one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard!
Peter Hofmann is the most powerful Siegmund I have heard.
He is perfect for Siegmund. This production by Chereau and Boulez is great in every aspect.
Every aspect? No. Wotan is pretty tired. John Tomlinson in Kupfers Ring is much better.
Is not a film, but a live performance without public, only for TV, based in the production performed in 1976, in the Bayreuth Centennial.
Hofmann´s voice was really heroic. And he looked like a wagnerian hero.
Trying to catch my breath!!!!
Iconic performance!
I love this part!!!

Hoffmann will be sadly missed...and this was a great performance and production!
Such greatness!!

It's clearly not Hofman and Altmeyer. They are Sieglinde and Sigmund just as that mad genius Wagner imagiined them, a performance unequaled ever.
He has done it - best ever - !!!
I'm so sad. R.I.P. Peter Hofmann ...

He did filmb loehnengrin. I was there. the swan tasted plush
Have just heard the sad news that Patrice Chereau has died. This is a fitting memorial to him, I think, May he rest in peace (wipes tears from eyes).

chereau ring on DVD....Brilliant
Mi emoziona ogni volta, erotismo ai massimi livelli , capolavoro di tutti i tempi, regia insuperabie
Hmm ... gives new meaning to the last note of act 1.
I only saw Hoffman on stage once (as Lohengrin) and I was a convert! He was magnificent!

@rusalkaism Peter Hofmann suffered for many years from parkonsons's desease and died in 2010.
um wow that's pretty graphic there at the end
Wonderful singing. But Siegmund and Sieglinde. Get a room!
Remember they are brother and sister!!!!
start at 3:09 (music note for myself :))
)O( Back For More!! :)
And I thought Luke and Leia were messed up :)
Could you add also "Wintersturme" with Hofmann?
4:36 that deceptive cadence though
It is a special live performance without an audience afaik. But why should they sing to the audience? It is not a concert but a theatre play.

all they are dead.
They can't even articulate the words clearly at this speed!
