  • There are a handful of shows in the history of television that make an impact so large that it shapes TV for decades. MASH, Cheers, Babylon 5, and Buffy are a few that come to mind. But one the most memorable, was a series about people stranded on a desert island no, not Gilligan's island and no, I am not talking about survivor either. It was of course LOST. This series was not a silly TV show, it was a game-changer. It wasn't focused on storylines but rather a perfect combination of characters and mysteries. Lost is one of those series that still sparks strong emotions from people. Many people love it or hate it. But is the hate for this show misplaced? Is it really that bad or could LOST be one of the greatest TV shows of all time? Let's explore the Island in this episode of Gone but Not Forgotten.

Your point on binge watching the show is a major factor when it comes down to whether the person enjoys it or not.I actually was introduced to Lost when season 6 was airing on tv. We went to BlockBuster every other day after binging 2 or 3 dvd's full of episodes. Looking back, it was a very interesting way of experiencing the show bc we binged it but also watch season 6 live.

In the first couple seasons the network was driving the show hard to stay grounded. Any concept that was too Sci fi was rejected, which is why they called Walt special...not psychic. Yeah, the pilot episode was mind-blowing and I was instantly hooked. The first 3 or 4 seasons were addictive and well-written as far as I was concerned. Towards the end they introduced so many different parts of this island that I kept wondering, "Jesus, how big is this damned thing"? Honestly I have watched a lot of great series over the years. I still believe that the first season of LOST was probably one of the best first seasons of a television series ever. It just hit the ground running with great action, mystery and of course the flashbacks revealing the tragic and heartbreaking pasts of the characters. Its just a shame for me it all went downhill after that. Don't get me wrong I still watched it and enjoyed it but it was never the same. I can't remember the actors name but he played Charlie and was in the lord of the rings, he said originally they had a three season story but because of its popularity the studio wanted more seasons so they were forced to drag out what was a tight story into a bloated one. I wonder what the show would've been like if they had stuck to just the three seasons instead of having to add stuff all the time to pad the show out. I personally didn't like S2 because I thought the addition of that actress who is always getting arrested for DUI's was a bad choice , not sure if it was the way her character was written or her acting but she came across as really obnoxious, unlikable and toxic and she was suddenly one of the main stars. Apparently it was always written that S2 would be about her and those different survivors ONLY and I am dubious if that would've worked so maybe it worked out better that things got changed

After years of watching great TV series I have learned its difficult to wrap up a show and do a finale that is satisfying to everyone. When Lost came out I was lucky to get the first season on an old DVD rip . Somebody I talked to online just posted me a bunch of random DISCS and said you need to watch this. It was called LOST (obviously) and I watched the entire first season in a week and loved it and re-watched it all again straight after. I followed the show as the episodes aired on television after that and I remember the first time I watched the ending being bitterly let down, angry and felt cheated. I took straight to online message boards (when we still had them) and would get into long arguments and debates with people. There seemed to be two camps, the Lost Apologists (they were called lol) who defended the show tooth and nail and the people who hated the ending lol, Oh and lets not forget the trolls who just stirred arguments up .. I have re-watched the entire show a few times since then with the benefit of them being in a boxset (which I bought and still have) so I could watch the episodes back to back instead of waiting a week to watch one and then waiting an entire year between seasons so I could follow it better and the ending is not as bad as I remember and I enjoy the show still. I mean look at the ending of The Sopranos (many regard as the greatest show ever) and how that pissed people off but people have mellowed to it and get it now with the passage of time. I would say Dexter could be classed as a bad ending and the worse part about it is they had TWO separate chances to do endings and they dropped the ball on both of them according to fans lol I wasn't as invested in Dexter as much as I was with Lost so I was indifferent but the fans seemed to be annoyed

I remember when I first saw 'Across the Sea' back in 2010. I didn't like it and was actively angered by some of it. But through several re-watches over the years I came to realise that it actually unlocks the entire mythology of the show once you understand what exactly is happening and why. It's an answer episode for sure, just not in the way we expected or originally wanted. I view 'Across the Sea' as a decoder ring episode. You just need to know how to use it. I also think that Season Six works better if you watch 'Across the Sea' as the prologue to it and treat the episode as if it were the de facto season premiere, so it helps to contextualise everything that comes after.

Back in 1992 there was a TV movie on NBC called "Danger Island" that starred Kathy Ireland. In that movie survivors of a plane crash wash up on a tropical island, found a mysterious research station abandoned in the 1970s, discover mysterious experiments have been carried out on the island, and have mysterious people living in the forest around them. There's even a monster on the island, an octopus sea urchin looking sea monster. It hits all the same beats as LOST. I have always wondered if this TV movie somehow influenced Abrams or Lindeloff, even subconsciously, when they were creating LOST.

A group of friends and I that had all never seen it were hooked, torrented it, and watched it over the summer, trying to fit in one season a week so we could talk about it when we all hung out.
The amazing character development formula roped us in, but the latter seasons are like tailor made for the kind of dudes that love “mindfuck” movies (all of us).

Honestly, I love LOST and it was only after recently marathoning it that I realise just how well it stands up in comparison to shows that could never dream of doing something like. Wholly unique, wonderfully fleshed out characters reinforced by some of the best acting you could ever asked for and this show excelled at setting up intrigue. The Season 6 debacle was 100% a fault of the fans as it really wasn't hard to understand exactly what was going on and Juliet even alludes to it within the first episode of that season.
Personally I think the weakest point of the show was Season 4 mostly because it felt like this series really stalled itself out with the Widmore arc and I think Charles Widmore is a character no-one really cared much about. I didn't mind the time travel because it ended up being pretty well explained in the end.

The problem with the show was JJ s idiotic "mystery box" idea. They came up with cool mysteries that raised interesting questions, without any idea of the answers to those questions. That's just terrible storytelling. The Star Wars sequels were written the same way; cool mysteries and set-ups, that they NEVER had any answers to as writers. Loved the show though and it's characters while it was running, the non-ending ruined everything for me.

It was a great show. Great story, characters and emotioal moments. I watched it as it aired and it was a great day at work to discuss what happened on the show the night before. I was always a journey viewer. I latched onto characters I liked and followed them along their journey. While getting answers to some things in the show was cool, I knew they couldn't satisfy everyone and honestly I thought the cork in the bottle thing, litterally a cork in a bottle thing was soooo stupid. Locke was a fave, but I didn't like what they did with his story. I did like the intersection of his and Saywer's past. How did the man from Tallahassee get there? Always had the hots for Kate but man, did she cry a lot for a tough chick. I was really saddened and disappointed that Rousseau never had a happy ending and the way she went out made me angry. There have been many shows that try to capture what LOST did but they just can't. There's only one LOST.

There is only one Lost...and it let lost, became so convoluted and tangled, and at the end, it became nothing, a disappointment. One needed to invest so much energy, to remember all those characters, all those relations between them, and I guess all expected some spectacular ending, but near the end, it became so obvious that the series became kinda flat as a pancake, and it got lost...

    • @artboymoy
      @artboymoy Рік тому +1

@@ozymandiasultor9480 I don't know about that. I remembered all the characters and the backstories and how they were tied to each other while watching the show. It wasn't that hard to keep track of. But it was a large cast to manage which is why you kill a bunch of them off and bring in new ones.

people give WAAAAY too much credit for LOST to JJ Abrams, when the other showrunners like Lindelof and Cuse deserve more.

    • @melrupinski88

Abrams wasn’t involved past the pilot, except for one other show he directed. He left to do Mission Impossible right after the pilot aired and left the show to Lindelof, who then brought in Carlton Cuse.

Mostly decent watch, with a lot dumb stuff added. I hated that sometimes a 27 min episode spent the first 18 min rehashing previous episodes. The writers portray people as real idiots who constantly fight or use or betray each other. They all overreact to situations. Could have been a great series, but fell short. Made me angry most the time.

The final episode still makes me tear up. There are so many layers to it that it makes it one of those rare shows that gets better even on rewatches. That said, I would love to be able to watch it all again for the first time!

Some stuff is a bit misleading... like you say that Perrineau was written out at the end of season 2 - and then you show a clip of him being killed off at the end of season 4, which is not reflected in the narration at all.
