I have the same Iron. My fuel tank got a leak on the parting seam of the mold. It splits when heated. Finally got it. Just need patience. A factory defect recalled in 1994. So I just fixed mine since there is no replacement.
I keep old plastic gas tanks on hand just to cut strips from, if the plastic is thick enough you can also just melt it back together though it will be thinner there, plastic bowls are also a good source of rod
I just have the kit that I got from harbor freight. The plastic filler rods it comes with are actually very good on many plastics and The Who kit is only like $15
a sad story? A buddy of mine several years back was holding his cell phone at a local gas station while fueling. The cell phone suddenly rang. All of a sudden a ball of flames blew up the whole side of that station. He got blown pretty far and got severe burns but survived.
Are there any cell phones that don't "suddenly" ring or vibrate? If cell phones at gas stations are an issue how come we don't see them "suddenly" blowing up all over the world? I think you are pulling some legs here or there was a different issue there.
I don’t believe it is, the rods are a lot softer. The rods that come with it work well for fuel tanks. Iv also used plastic strips cut from thicker fuel tanks and it seems to work good on most applications
@@smalltownmachineshop6860 I like the odds. They had 3 other machines that they lowered and lowered in price every few weeks. One was a small geared head LeBlonde lathe that sold for like $200, and the other was a big universal mill that I think sold for like $300.

@@fromthebackofmymind the seams can be tricky, the metal mesh or metal door screen really helps with those repairs
Thanks for taking the time to record and post the process
Thank you for watching it
I like the moment you fill the water lol
You just saved me $400 thank you!
I’m glad you found the video useful
Hi Adam,
Not seen this done before... Thanks for sharing...
Take care
Paul,,
I haven’t either so I thought I would film it for you guys
It’s sure worth a try and several try’s 😊😊
Nice video. What would you recommend in place of your plastic rod? Something around the shop

I’m going to try it before long
It’s not hard and quick to learn
Can you make a recommendation on what I need to buy to do this to my gas tank?

Never mind I just heard you say Harbor Freight
Thank you for doing this video. A new tank for my mower is close to $700.
@@grahamcovin they do get crazy expensive for what they are

That’s very unfortunate
@@smalltownmachineshop6860 yeah so moral of the story be careful with fumes and fuel.
For sure, nothing is ever worth the chance

I've seen where people use the plastic ties. Is the plastic they are made of, the same as the rods?

Most zip ties are nylon. Not HDPE or LDPE. Polyethylene is what these tanks are made of.
How do you dry it before you put gas in it ? Seems like you would have moisture in it
Just left it tipped upside down outside over night, had no issues whatsoever
Well it’s 110 in West Texas today so it’s not a problem lolol
Nice job....!
Thanks, that kit has come in very handy over the years
What kind of plastic is a scag tank? Thats what i have, thanks
I just used the normal rods but if the tank
Is thick you have a lot more options
Good timing :)
I am to please lol
