Ive read casually over the last few years. I normally finish a book over a few weeks to a month. Project hail mary was the first book i read in under 48 hours. Loved it
Love the rebrand of the channel to reading. As a fellow short-king who reads (who watched for fashion beforehand) this is a welcome surprise. Keep making the content bro!
Just wanted to say thank you for representing men that enjoy reading. I recommended red rising to my boyfriend (new to reading/books) because of one of your videos. & He’s HOOOOOKED. As an older guy, you missed some old classic “guy” books. 1. Any Western by Louis L’Amour. They are all relatively short and he’s a great storyteller. 2. Any James Bond book written by Ian Fleming (might as well start with Casino Royale, his first, but Moonraker is awesome (not like the Roger Moore film, which seemed like a spoof). 3. Crime dramas (you did include The Godfather) - I would recommend Raymond Chandler or Mickey Spillane. Also, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which is a collection of short stories featuring Holmes and ‘told’ by his loyal sidekick, Dr. Watson. 4. Michael Crichton - his books are all page turners. You could read Jurassic Park, but my recommendation is The Andromeda Strain. There are a bunch of others, but this gives you a good starter set of books. I’m not big into fantasy, or the “Marvel Universe”. I liked a few of your choices, notably The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (which is book one of a trilogy, all of which are great). The trilogy has been made into movies that are in Swedish with English subtitles, but if you can handle that, they are much better than the single Hollywood movie you showed. Cheers!
appreciate these! i was hoping to get Recs like these. i only could recommend what ive personally read as a still new-ish reader so i know im missing a lot of good ones too
Graphic novels totally count. Some people think they are a genre. But they are a medium. And contain all the same (and then some) genres that ’normal’ novels do. If you don’t know where to start, think what genre books/movies/etc. you like to read and ask a local librarian (or ChatGPT) to recommend you the best books in that genre!
I appreciate your channel for having book recommendations for the bois. Booktube is all YA and chick-lit. I know we are a tiny demographic and i appreciate you homie
Another great series for you guys is Sun Eater!! If you like Red Rising but want something on a larger scale, it’s an amazing series. The first book is a foundation, but once you read the second book you will be hooked!!
i read the first two and i wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to a new-ish book reader. i personally didn’t enjoy it as much as the other sci fi’s i listed on here, as i think the writing is a bit less conversational, which to me is important for getting a new reader hooked. that being said, i did enjoy it and the second book was like a 4.2 star for me so im excited for Demon in White cuz i hear it’s great
Bro... your review of these books and reigniting my passion for reading with your hilarious banter got you a like and a sub! Keep up the great work brother!
If you haven't read any King yet, I very highly suggest Different Seasons. It's a collection of 4 novellas (3 of which were turned into movies) that show you different sides of King's writing abilities. I found it by watching Shawshank Redemption and wondering who wrote it. Turns out it's one of the novellas in this book. Another one of those that ended up being a movie was The Body (Stand By Me - great coming of age movie that was released in the 80's) Definitely worth your time and a great entry point into King, at least in my opinion.
Your last video got me to finally start reading Red Rising and my man, I am hooked! It had been on my list for a while but for whatever reason you tipped me over the edge. Can't wait to finish it and get to the rest of the series. Also was a big fan of Project Hail Mary. The Will of the Many is high on the list too after the Red Rising series.
I also recommend Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman, just finished this last night and my god the book RIPS. It's a horror book set during the black plague
I love I took one look at you and immediately knew you were from Boston. Great books all. The biggest thing I took away from Atomic Habits is how each time you do something to form a new habit, you're voting for the person you want to be. I'd also recommend Mordew by Alex Pheby for the fantasy guys.
I appreciate the name change, just subscribed! Wasn’t sure how often you’d post about books so I didn’t subscribe before. The book videos have been great so far
Hey dude thanks for your book videos. Your vibe and how you talk about the books you like resonates with me lol. If you haven’t already look into “The Murderbot Diaries”. WORTH IT!
Good suggestions here. I typically suggest a lot of the popular adventure and mystery authors (Clussler, Baldacci, Dan Brown, Greamney, DeMille) to my friends. My sleeper would be Martha Wells MurderBot series... super short books that are almost always great. I am more of a fantasy person these days... but fantasy books are harder to get into (imo) as they are typically lengthy series.
You should give the Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee. Jade City, Jade War, and Jade Legacy. Although a little on the chunky side in length, they are great!
I would recommend anything by Cormac McCarthy tbh. His books are almost tailor made for men. He wrote No Country For Old Men which eventually became a movie, and every other book by him is equally as good or better.
watched a past video of yours and you mentioned Piranesi... so I dove in like 2 days ago and am halfway through... starting to get very very good. thanks for the suggestions... also, enjoying your video and channel vibes.
i’m not a guy, but i thought i could leave a recommendation. it’s called the warded man and it’s basically fighting demons 😂 it took me a minute to finish, but i loved it.
Hey Phil! do you have a pros & cons for hardcover vs paperback? Do you prefer one over the other? Do you only buy one over the other when you have to but inside you would prefer to have the option?
i tend to buy paperback cuz it’s cheaper. sometimes hard cover feels clunky to me. but that being said i’m reading a hard cover now and it’s really nice how my reading light doesn’t flop around so i’m enjoying that
“I’m a dude, he’s a dude, she’s a dude, cause we’re all dudes, hey!” While you were ripping the page on The Girl with the Tattoo I was typing it into Amazon to add it to my wishlist. I am a super detective/crime dude. Great book recs 🎉
Your brother's got good taste. I'm a big Stephen King fan and The Long Walk is still one of my favourite book I have ever read. I highly recommend 11/22/63 from King too.
Great shout out for How To Win Friends and Influence People. As hyped as it is, i think it is generally underrated. I know you said most guys recommend sports books or historical biographies.... And im gonna do that. The Rider by Tim Krabbe. It gets in the head of a cyclist during one race. Its fast paced and rather short (a great feature, right?).
haha hey they’re solid recs, i just wanted to do something different with these. plus i haven’t read a TON of sports biographies outside of like an MJ one and a Larry Bird one
I'm waiting for Amazon to deliver my copy of Red Rising before 10pm because of you. If I don't like it, I'll be back to claim my £10.99 from you in someone way or another. Probably steal one of your hats. It's only fair. No idea how you have under 8k subs! So before this channel blows up, congrats from England! haha
Really digging the content here man! I honestly haven't truly got into reading since maybe the Harry Potter books were coming out, so it's been a hot minute. That being said, I picked up Dark Matter and it sucked me right in. Finished it somehow in three days. I'll check out Hail Mary based on the recommendations here. Definitely second the recommendation for Dark Matter too
If anyone here likes “red rising” the most similar story I can find that’s actually well written would have to be “The Will Of The Many” although it’s not sci-fi. It’s more medieval, it’s great though.
These are great recommendations, the ones I'd add to your list are Dungeon Crawler Carl, one of the most dude books of all time. And Lies of Locke Lamora, it's like fantasy Oceans 11, incredible
DCC is probably my next read after Misborn #3, i feel like it would 100% be on here if i had read it at this point. Seen a few good comments about Lies of Locke Lemora, is that a series?
@philgotbooks technical it is a series, there are 3 but might eventually be 7, but I treat the first one like a stand alone, kinda like Mistborn 1 It is also my favorite fantasy book of all time and got me into adult fantasy
If anybody is reading this and is considering reading Project Hail Mary, do yourself this favor - read it, and DO NOT LOOK UP ANYTHING PRIOR. GO IN TO IT AS BLIND AS YOU CAN.
I read red rising thanks to your suggestion and I'm so glad I did so. Thank you for that. If I could offer one back, it would be the Saxon stories by Bernard Cornwell. Netflix did a good adaptation called the last Kingdom if you've seen it, but definitely worth a look. I listen to it via audible and the narrator is fantastic if you're into audiobooks
There you go 💯💪🏼 Boi is back with his recommendation. Here is mine for you: Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon Series (Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol, Inferno, and The Origin) I'm sure you will love it. Experience a thrilling blend of real-life locations and intriguing groups intertwined with captivating fictional mysteries!
Sometimes cool, old stuff to try is anything, but especially the early Conan stories, by Robert E. Howard, The Mike Hammer books by Mickey Spillane and the Parker books by Richard Stark.
Invincible is a unique suggestion. I love comics and I love invincible. But I say it’s unique because people don’t talk about it enough. Great story, great artwork. Great characters. I watched the show before i read the book. (Not gonna lie I liked the show better.) both are amazing. Good recommendation!
The terminal list by Jack Carr. Not sci-fi but a great thriller for guys. The book follows a navy seal whose whole team was killed overseas. He find out about a conspiracy behind it and must uncover it all.
One recommendation I have is Artificial Wisdom by Thomas R. Weaver. It’s his debut novel. By chance, I read it right before the California fires so it’s still stuck with me. It’s set about 40 years in our future and the earth is going thru a climate apocalypse so nations of the earth are choosing to elect a dictator that would help fix it. One of the candidates that’s running for dictator is an artificial wisdom. It’s a mix of thriller, mystery, sci-fi dystopian that I think dudes would really enjoy.
Red Rising big yes, alchemist no. How to win friends no. Atomic habits yes. Knight of the seven kingdoms and blood over bright haven added to TBR thanks brother. Some recs for you: Circe, Small Great Things, The book thief, Before we were yours, Station Eleven, Remarkably Bright Creatures.
Ok so I know it’s old and not “hip with the kids” buuutt I really liked Digital Fortresses by Dan Brown. I read this as an ARC back when bookstagram was a yahoo chat rooms (yes I’m old) but it’s really good and my husband is reading it now; I figured he’d like it since he is a computer analyst and IT guy 😂. Also anything by Michael Crichton 👍🏻
Sephelopha and a Josh Smith reference. Real recognize real player. Your book choices are amazing as well. I’m adding “The Rage of Dragons” to this list. I read 34 books last year which included the Stormlight archives and Mistborn and I liked rage of dragons just as much in not better!!
Try these possibilities that humans of the male persuasion might really like: Jack Campbell's The Lost Fleet series (military sci-fi), anything by Adrian Tchaikovsky (Cage of Souls, Children of Time, Alien Clay), Taylor Anderson's Destroyermen series (WWII destroyer finds itself in a primitive alternative Earth), Matt Dinniman's Dungeon Crawler Carl series (very fun and funny but serious and very high stakes), Sebastian de Castell's swashbuckler fantasy The Greatcoats (swordfighting, humorous, dramatic moments, male friendship), Lord of the Rings (also male friendship, high stakes and emotional depth).
Michael Sullivan’s Riyeria Revolutions series is fantastic! Fantasy with action, humor a great bromance. If you enjoy listening to books get the one with Tim Gerard Reynolds narrating. I’m not a fan of the dramatizations. Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files is Urban Fantasy. Gritty, action and heavily laced with sarcasm. I also liked his older series Codex Alera a fantasy, but I have seen reviews that are less favorable than I am. Larry Correia’s series Monster Hunters International series Urban Fantasy. Action, violence, great story and yes some humor. Correia’s latest series Saga of the Forgotten Warrior is Fantasy. Action, politics, not so much humor.
As a fellow short king who loves comics I say this with love and respect to you. I hate Robert Kirkman. I don’t like his writing and other comic creators have alleged that he’s screwed them over in the past. Perfectly fine to recommend Invincible, it’s a serviceable first comic. However, if you haven’t, you should read East of West by Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta. It also comes in three big compendiums like Invincible and it is big brained as fuck. Also comics totally count as books. It’s in the name: comic books.
I see red rising, I click. It's simple.

golden son, and morning star ( 2nd and 3rd book) are amazing sci fi

I'd like to add:
House of Leaves
The Lesser Dead
Love is a Mixtape (memoir)
Life After Death (memoir)
Dungeon Crawler Carl is another one to get. The audiobook is the way to go, in my opinion.
got it locked and loaded on Audible. Finishing my current book and then finishing the Mistborn trilogy and then i’m diving into DCC
Red rising got me into reading last year. Now reading The Su Eater series
Link your Goodreads...
tbh i don’t write reviews or anything on there so this channel is actually the best place to hear my opinions on books i’ve read
If you are okay with commitment the wheel of time is the best series I have ever read there is a lull here and there but worth it imo
There you go 💯💪🏼 Boi is back with his recommendation.
Here is mine for you: Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon Series (Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol, Inferno, and The Origin)
I'm sure you will love it. Experience a thrilling blend of real-life locations and intriguing groups intertwined with captivating fictional mysteries!
I burnt out on invincible at issue 24, need to pick it back up
immediately sent this to my boyfriend thank you phil got books
hahah that’s the goal! hope he finds a good fine novel from this list
Sometimes cool, old stuff to try is anything, but especially the early Conan stories, by Robert E. Howard, The Mike Hammer books by Mickey Spillane and the Parker books by Richard Stark.
Project Hail mary definitely my favorite book of all time
Invincible is a unique suggestion. I love comics and I love invincible. But I say it’s unique because people don’t talk about it enough. Great story, great artwork. Great characters. I watched the show before i read the book. (Not gonna lie I liked the show better.) both are amazing. Good recommendation!
Even if you don’t like westerns (crazy I know) lonesome dove is a must read for every adult
i saw 2toRamble vote it as their fav book of 2024 so my ears are perked
The terminal list by Jack Carr. Not sci-fi but a great thriller for guys. The book follows a navy seal whose whole team was killed overseas. He find out about a conspiracy behind it and must uncover it all.
Comic books in volume format such as trade paperbacks, hardcovers, and Omnibuses definitely count as books. Comic issues... not so much
I have read The Long Walk and its a good book. Well written and any male teen or higher aill appreciate it. Not like King's normal style.
I'm gay buy I like reading books like this. lol. Books like this doesn't make me cringe. Romance did.😂
Jack in the Box by William Kotzwinkle is hilarious. They made it a movie, Book of Love, and then renamed the book to the same thing.
A great book to add to that list is The Combat Codes by Alexander Darwin
One recommendation I have is Artificial Wisdom by Thomas R. Weaver. It’s his debut novel. By chance, I read it right before the California fires so it’s still stuck with me. It’s set about 40 years in our future and the earth is going thru a climate apocalypse so nations of the earth are choosing to elect a dictator that would help fix it. One of the candidates that’s running for dictator is an artificial wisdom. It’s a mix of thriller, mystery, sci-fi dystopian that I think dudes would really enjoy.
oh that sounds really cool
Red Rising big yes, alchemist no. How to win friends no. Atomic habits yes. Knight of the seven kingdoms and blood over bright haven added to TBR thanks brother. Some recs for you: Circe, Small Great Things, The book thief, Before we were yours, Station Eleven, Remarkably Bright Creatures.
I started reading in middle of 2024 and 100% recommend the Horus heresy books from warhsmmer. Damnnnn they good
Ok so I know it’s old and not “hip with the kids” buuutt I really liked Digital Fortresses by Dan Brown.
I read 34 books last year which included the Stormlight archives and Mistborn and I liked rage of dragons just as much in not better!!
that’s awesome i will be reading that for sure this year. just haven’t actually read it yet so i couldn’t rec it for this video unfortunately
@@philgotbooks lmk when you do. It’s very different but the revenge plot mixed with a band of brothers is awesome!!!
DCC is on my TBR! i’m sure it would be on here if i had read it already. But great recs overall appreciate it
Are the red rising books 4-6 worth it? I tried a few times with books 4, but really struggled (and absolutely love red rising)
I do recommend The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. Easy read. Could get it done in a day or two.
Nick Miller, is that you?
