Never got super into Jawbox, but they’re still pretty great and are definitely a hugely influential band with ties to Dischord records (Ian MacKaye of Fugazi/Minor Threat’s label). Their singer/guitarist J. Robbins is one of the bigger engineers/producers in underground music. He’s worked with Against Me!, mewithoutyou, Jimmy Eat World, Bayside, Jawbreaker, None More Black, Paint It Black, Clutch, The Sword, etc.
The song is a description of the female body, but in a very cryptic form. "Hey angel angel, fly over and bless me, see you feign surprise, but I'm all eyes" To me, it's referencing women's innate understanding of sexuality and the power they have over men. "Savoring your sympathy" hints at a toxic, dependent relationship. According to the lead singer, that was a big influence on how the lyrics ended up coming to life, he was manifesting heartache from a previous relationship. Though the song is intentionally sensual and melancholy in it's sound, so that sexuality was also incorporated into the lyrics. It's abstract, but beautiful, my favourite song of all time, simple, but deep, and heavy.
