    "X French T Shirt" is a song that pops into my head literally at least once a day. I'm not using "literally" in the modern emphatic way, I'm using it in the proper way, as defined in the dictionaries of old.

    Ive listened to X french T shirt so much but when you said that the second part gets repeated for 3 whole minutes I was like "theres no way this is true"
    but it sure is
    That part never seemed too long or dragging or anything to me. I always loved that part the most. The way it builds.
    It's actually impressive to be able to pull that off

    Great live band. Got to see them many times in the early nineties. They played out a lot In NYC. Saw them with Fugazi, Jawbox, circus Lupus (my personal favorite). DC had a great scene. All the bands sounded very unique. No copycat scene shit. Hoover, Autoclave etc. I’m pleased to see a new generation of kids listening to the nineties amazing array of indie/post hardcore.

  • @loubob73

    The last time I saw them play was in Boston, opening for Dinosaur Jr. Most of the kids had come to see Dinosaur Jr, but not me. Everyone was standing there with their little backpacks on, as was the style at the time, politely watching S2T. But there was one kid who was bouncing around like a pinball, bumping into everybody, and mouthing all of the words. When he saw my S2T t-shirt, he stopped bouncing around, and yelled to me, “You get it man! You get it!” I thought that was so perfect. In another setting, I probably would have found this guy completely annoying. But in this context, it seemed appropriate. Most people didn’t really “get” this band. But those that did, thought they were the best thing ever.

    • @campion95
      @campion95  3 місяці тому

      It is, but it may be a true statement. As a huge fan of specifically “unique” rock bands I don’t think there’s really anyone that matches STT’s beautiful balance of bizarre and catchy. Primus and Mr.Bungle definitely can have hooks for days but they’re outwardly bizarre, I think what makes Shudder to Think so interesting is because they’re kind of like those bands disguised as a 90s Rock band, and to be in on it is a lot of fun!

    Growing up in Washington DC, I didn't quite get Shudder To Think at the time. I was more into their straight ahead contemporaries like Helmet and Quicksand. It wasn't til years later that I grew to appreciate how bizarre and unique they were. Another band that had a somewhat similar approach was New York's Barkmarket, who were fronted by Dave Sardy. Like Shudder To Think, they would often slip in really dissonant and angular guitar riffs in between more approachable melodic parts.

    Hey there, Ned from Spain here to say a gigantic thank you for making this video about. STT are amazing and this album is one of the great twisted wonders that a major label somehow, put out and promoted. I wish you would've mentioned that Wedren can't remember Chakka's lyrics which were lost or never written down. I've tried to figure them out to no avail. My late 80s band in NYC played a show with them and Craig was really complementary to us but I can't remember a thing about the show. As a drummer I must say both Mike Russell and Adam Wade, who's on "Pony.." are fantastic players.

    The way they were able to juggle discord (they were signed to dischord haha) and melody is incredibly unique. Dissonance, noise, odd time signatures and beautifully absurd lyrics make them so great. 🔥

      Great comment man! For sure I can imagine there are so many bands that are into STT big time, they definitely make Music for Musicians for sure but also with the Pop & Melodic sensibilities that a lot of “Music for Musicians” severely lacks! A truly unique band!

  • @arothmanmusic
    @arothmanmusic 4 роки тому +8

    Excellent. STT produced some fascinating and brain bendingly unique rock. Pony Express is filled with the sort of songs you need to sit with and focus on. The hooks don’t jump out and wave at you all the time, but once they find you they’re undeniable. “9 Fingers” remains my favorite track on that album, but the brief bluesy guitar solo midway through “No. Room 9 Kentucky” is one of my favorite in all of rock, and the return from the sloshy middle section in the middle of “Hit Liquor” bangs so hard you need a helmet. Thanks for giving this band their due respect.

I spent a lot of time with their albums in the mid-nineties and they almost felt like a special kept secret, even though they were on a major label and had a Buzz Bin video on MTV in 1993/1994 (or whenever that was). I'm so confused. My cynicism knows no bounds. I thought this was a parody *of* video essays about lesser known musical artists, and hyperbolic music criticism. "A band that was forgotten", "from an alternative universe"... I know your game! I was marvelling over how well constructed all the incidental footage was, and the filters used really DID make them look like videos from the 90s, and how the person that did Jeff Buckley's voice was hilarious. And thought "You know what, I actually wish this band was real, I like the sound of them". And then thought the comments were all on-point tongue-in-cheek impressions of know-it-all youtube commenters - making up album names which you forgot to mention like "50'000BC" - omg yes that is such a typical album name for a navalgazing rock outfit. And the album covers showed so much understanding of design cliche's in cover art.
    Dubbing over live footage of other bands was a genious touch. And wow you must have *made* some of the footage, haha the IMDB is there... it's publicly edited so that makes sense. Oh the music videos exist, guess you have to do something with the outtakes and broaden the hoax... and then I see "Uploaded 10 years ago" and after briefly wondering if UA-cam was in on it, everything fell apart and I don't know what's real anymore.
    I want to enjoy Shudder To Think, but how will I shake the feeling that that they're an incredibly well constructed hoax? Does it matter? Does being privvy to an excellently curated reconstructed corner of rock music history have as much to offer me as the mythology of being 'in the know'? Is the intersubjective abstraction of parody so closely akin to the subversion of musical and lyrical expectations expressed by intelligent and revolutionary artists to render the distinction meaningless? What is love? Baby don't hurt me?
    You also forgot to mention the 1995 E.P. Switchblade Kangaroo which was released on Spontaneously Conceived Records, but never found widespread appeal despite breaking such musical ground that it was even cited by music critic Simon Reynolds, as "The single most important musical release of the late 20th century".

    One of The best bands of their or any era. Great melody and angularity, delicacy and power, and memorable SONGS. Should be remembered with the best of the best. Where the band ended up musically, is all the more impressive when you follow along from where they started. Funeral at the movies, ten spot, get your goat - all classics!

    Great job on this! Funnily enough, despite their riffing of the band and their music, Beavis and Butthead were my gateway to this band when I was about 11. I never forgot the sound of Hit Liquor, even into my twenties and thirties, and one day I followed that memory to the rest of their catalogue and absolutely loved it. I had a stretch of about 3 months where I would listen to "Abysmal Yellow Popcorn Wall" at least once a day.

      But such a great point you made regarding the first track on Get your Goat.(I call it the endurance test). It's admittedly the only album I've listened to over and over and I love it. Actually the reason why I subscribed was your agreement with someone elses comment re: Dillinger Escape Plan, because I swear black bubblegum was going thru my head AT THAT MOMENT.

    Saw them many times in the late 80s and early 90s in DC. The original lineup with Chris Matthews on guitar was incredible and put out the most unique and amazing music of that band’s career, yet everyone focuses on and praises the later lineup. They completely changed their sound and ditched playing the majority of their earlier songs (because Nathan Larson couldn’t play Chris’ guitar parts!) At that point they really should’ve changed their name. They weren’t the same band.
