TOP 10 MOST FAMOUS POOL SHOTS OF ALL TIME … And How to Shoot Them

- In a recent video ( • TOP 10 EFREN REYES FAM... ), I demonstrated and analyzed the Top 10 Most Famous pool shots by the Greatest of All Time (GOAT): Efren Reyes. In this video, I present the Top 10 Most Famous Shots by everybody else. I try to recreate them, and I give advice for how to be successful if you want to give them a try.
This is part of the "Most Famous Pool Shots" series:
• Most Famous Pool Shots...
CORRECTIONS:
- on shot 5, Corey was playing 1-pocket (not 10-ball), so it was a two-way shot where he was getting the 8 away from his opponent's pocket while also having a chance to pocket the 10.
- on shot 10, Shane was playing 10-ball, which is a call-pocket game, so he intentionally tried to make the 10 (or leave the 3 bad if he didn't). If he had called the 3 instead, the 10 would spot and his opponent would shoot.

Some people have asked why Efren's Z-Shot isn't on this list. The answer is at the beginning of the video. I have several videos dedicated entirely to Efren in my "Most Famous Pool Shots and Matches of All Time" playlist:

Hi, Dr. Dave. Just for some clarity:
On Corey's carom shot into the 10 (Shot #5), he was playing 1-pocket, so it was a 2-way shot where he was getting the 8 out of his opponent's pocket and also knew there'd be a chance he'd run into the 10 at the right angle.
On Shane's jump-bank 2-rail carom into the 10 (Shot #10), he was playing 10-ball, which is a called-pocket game, so he intentionally tried to make the 10 there. Had he made the 3 (and not the 10), it would have been a miscall and his opponent would have then come to the table.
@@chili015 that clears things up with the shot choice. I didnt think of 1 pocket.
Thank you for pointing these out. I should have been more careful and tried to find the source videos with full context. I also should have remembered 10-ball rules better.
FYI, I've added the following CORRECTIONS to the video description and pinned comment:

He was playing against Alex Pagulayan, and later in the match Shane called the same shot again. Alex said that if he made it he was going to quit.
Despite your self-deprecating comments, being able to recreate most of those shots is pretty impressive. 👍
Thank you.
I agree

Yep. Top players get "lucky" much more often than us mere mortals.
Great video, Dr. Dave! The amount of knowledge, patience and effort you put in your videos is really amazing. 😊
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
On Shane’s 3-10 combination, he called the shot, which you can see in the full video. Otherwise it wouldn’t have been a win in 10-ball.

@@DrDaveBilliards There's no pinned comment; you might want to check that. Btw huge fan and love your slow motion and theory videos- been following for years.
Watching this reminds me so much of my Dad. He was an above average pool player and he taught me so much. We moved to Arkansas in 1980 and I was hanging out in the local Snooker halls. I loved watching those old men fleece the unsuspecting, self professed hot shots that wondered in from time to time. I wasn't ever any good, but I loved to play.
Having your channel pop up randomly in my recommended channels was a blast down history lane for me. I was a student of yours in 2011 for a freshman engineering course and remember you talking about billiards back then. What a great surprise and thanks for being a part of my education that led me to work in aerospace.
It's good to hear from you, and I'm glad you seem happy with your education and career choice. Best of luck with thing in the future from Dr. Dave!
I was thinking the same thing. Played with Dr. Dave in the dorms once. We didn't stand a chance!
Loved this video - loved the way you show just how skilful the players are and how hard it is to recreate
love your videos.. practical advice. All these shots are really amazing and the number of tries to recreate some just shows how difficult some of the shots are, even more telling as the player is extremely experienced.
The Chris Melling shots were also in a called shot game which makes it even more amazing.
In Mexico all games are called shot...
@@mighty0muffin wtf
On Corey’s shot he is playing one pocket and he hit the ball out of Alex’s pocket knocked it towards his and made the other ball in his. That’s what made it an amazing shot and why he didn’t just pocket the eight

Hey Dr. Dave love the vids. I play league pool despite only being able to use my right arm only.
There was an amputee in my league many years ago and he was lethal. People felt sorry for him only the first time they played him. Then they feared him.
Shane called the ten on that jump three ten. It was a call ball match. Thank you for all the time you put in on these videos!
I was about to say the same thing. I don’t think he could see enough of the three to pocket it. You can hear him call the ten in the video.

I had a feeling you'd feature Alain Martel's shot. I think he applied a bit of left to the cue ball on that shot. Alain is a phenomenal player. I've seen him pull many-a-rabbit out of his hat in local pro tournaments in the 1990's.
Salutations, Dr Dave!
It's crazy seeing you recreating the same shots as other youtubers (like rollie williams) and nailing them in far fewer attempts, it just goes to show how far years of knowledge and skill will take you!

Wow incredible video, you are amazing as well, but as great as you are, when you try these shots it really puts into perspective how impressive these in-game shots are
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. And I agree with how impressive these shots are in match situations (even if some might be a little lucky).
Great video. I've loved that De Luna shot ever since he hit it. But for that shot, the more impressive thing to me is that he seemed to be closer to the rail than you demonstrated. He was jacked up on the rail it looks like, which made the shot and accuracy WAY harder.
I tried to match the ball positions as closely as I could by looking at all views available in the original videos, but you might be right. And I agree ... it is much harder if the CB is closer to the cushion.
Nice shooting on your part ... irregardless of the multiple attempts. Rock on Dr Dave👍👍👍👍👍👍

Most honest review of this video is quite favorable. Where most would show that those shots were easily to duplicate, you show your failures and noted how many there were; not glossing over the original accomplishments. Second, you explained the physics of each shot to the best of your knowledge and what you believed to original intention was. I really enjoy this form of commentary and it took me back thirty years when I was out of high school and hanging in pool halls thinking I might be pretty good when the truth was, I was pretty good for my small group of friends. I plan on subscribing and watching more of your videos. Thank you!

Hi Dr. Dave... small nitpick on the Deuel shot @ 6:55. You mention that he was "showing off," and that he had better options. But the on-screen graphic seems to show that he was playing one pocket (so he couldn't pocket the 8 and come back down for shape). He literally had to knock out the opponent's ball or it would have been an easy pot for his opponent. I think that was what he intended. Deuel was trying to knock away the 8 from the pocket it was closest to, to leave his opponent "safe" and he happened to knock the 10 in as a sort of bonus.
Agreed. See the "CORRECTIONS" in the video description.

- on shot 10, Shane was playing 10-ball, which is a call-pocket game, so he intentionally tried to make the 10 (or leave the 3 bad if he didn't). If he had called the 3 instead, the 10 would spot and his opponent would shoot.
Well Dr Dave, look at it this way, at least there's a lot of people out there that appreciate the game enough to know when there are mistakes! I'm also sure they hold you in high esteem for the work you do with this channel etc (I know I do) and after all, it only makes those videos you picked out even MORE impressive!
Thanks for that; although, I should have been a little more careful in trying to find the original match videos for shots 5 and 10 so I could have had full context. Thanks again.
@@DrDaveBilliards all good. Totally see why you'd say that and can understand if it feels kinda bad getting what seems like negative feedback. Just keep in mind how happy most commenters feel thinking they knew something the great Dr Dave didn't/missed. I'm sure it makes their day (but only due to how much you're respected)!
@@JH-ji6cj Thanks again. You are right. I should be flattered by how many people want to correct me.
Any advice for a natural righty but my dominant eye is my left? It makes it impossible to evenly line up shots in pool and in darts. I've learned to adjust over the years, but there's much guess work involved. I've always been looking for a solid way to overcome this... I even tried playing left handed and keeping one eye closed.
First, regardless of eye dominance, first carefully find your personal "vision center:"

Then find you personal best stance to achieve vision center placement:

Good luck!
4:10 The better you are the luckier you get. What a nice quote :)
Nice ... and true.
Albin O from the world Cup of pool 2019 vs Greece. Amazing shot!
Agreed. That shot is featured (shot 5) in my "More MOST FAMOUS POOL SHOTS of All Time … And How to Shoot Them" video here:

@@DrDaveBilliards This video Originally caught my eye, because I used to shoot in 8-ball Tournaments. Nothing Professionally, but just Locally. It was fun at least. The best I got was 2nd Place BTW.
Great video!

Nice vid.
Is the table a 10 footer?
Nope ... standard 9' regulation-size table.
Very impressive Dr Dave!
Thanks!

Hi there. I’m trying to get better at playing pool and think a coach might be a good idea. I’ve been playing 8 and 9 ball for a couple years now but want to be able to take my game to the next level (specifically being able to runout more often). Do you have any recommendations for resources where I could find reputable coaches in my area?
See the links at the bottom of the page here:

OMG, Trillions like and best comment for you because you are best on Earth and follower respect you, we need videos in Real 120fps or 240fps 8K resolution clarity quality and Sound in FullHD Surrounded 3D
I do need to upgrade my camera (and computer and software) some day.
Question, I’m kinda new to pool I mean I play using bar que’s, what would be a good 2 piece stick to use? I’m getting a table so really want my own stick
See:

I’m gonna practice these.
Good idea. They are fun, and you can learn something.

That match that Chris Melling played is dubbed the greatest 8 ball run out ever just because of those 3 amazing difficult shots he made
I wouldn't call it the greatest 8-ball match ever, but it was certainly the best shot sequence ever. See my "TOP 10 BEST Pro Pool SHOT SEQUENCES of All Time" video:

Awesome 👏🏽 great video 😬
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
Just a thought: I remember that in Byrne's training video, he mentioned that the spin on cue ball won't have effect on the object ball, but on the path bouncing from the cushion. However, in your last example with Efren's shot, it does have effect on the object ball. Just a little confused.
The main purpose for sidespin is to change the rebound angle off cushions, but it does have other uses, all of which are covered in the video and other resources here:

Enjoy!
I really enjoyed this. Well done... I would think that some of the shots setting it up 20 or more times would become fatiguing and hard to keep focus on what you are trying to recreate. Kudos!!!
I'm glad you liked it. You are right ... it isn't easy missing the same shot over and over again. FYI, I have a lot more videos in this series in this playlist:

Look up on UA-cam this Description... "Corey Deuel's Crazy Jump Shot." It was an insane shot made during the 2015 Mosconi Cup... It was a Nine Ball Match... This is by far an Iconic moment by this Crazy Talented Pool Player....
That is a good one. Thanks. FYI, I have this plus many other great shots from Corey and others, linked here:

Shot 2...my favorite! I think he planned it, with the intention of making it!
He definitely planned to get the hit, but it is very unlikely he expected to make that combo.
Very nice dr dave I like it
Thanks. I'm glad.
I'm glad you said the Alain Martel shot was "lucky." NOBODY can just walk up and make such a shot. I agree that he just wanted to hit the 2 -- the rest was a lucky fluke. Same with the SVB 3-10 combo. Great job on demonstrating these!
Agreed. With SVB's shot, he called the 10, but it was a two-way shot, where he hoped to create distance and maybe hide the 3 from the CB.
My all time favourite shots are draw shots because for me personally it's so satisfying to see how far one can bring the cue back down the table
Agreed. Showy draw shots are tough to beat in terms of visual satisfaction.
