What's there to hate? I owned a 2011 panamera 4 for 3 years with first gen dual clutch pdk and now own an 03 996 tip cabrio now for 3 years aswell. As a matter of fact the time lag to change gears is the same, can't notice the difference. As a daily driver tip is great and bullet proof!
Owned manual cars for many years and no longer keen on driving them in traffic. On the open road they can be nice but in town they're a pain. In any case this car has a huge amount of torque low down the rev range so one can execute ferocious overtakes without even changing gears. I'd take the tiptronic without hesitation.
Got the tiptronic in my one. Its faultless and a joy to use. Great video and you make some very accurate points about ownership. An honest video for anybody thinking about taking the leap.
Just spent THREE DAYS at one of the biggest Porsche rally's in the USA - 150+ Porsches. There was a HEAVILY modified 997.1 Turbo with Tip. That car kept up with 991 GT3 RS's - even in the corners. I'm not exaggerating. Completely changed my mind about the Tip. As for me personally, I followed a 997.1 Turbo Tip Cab through the mountains one day...for about an hour...that car was just as fast as me in the corners and MUCH faster on the straights. I will never talk down the Tip again. Is the PDK better? Sure. But the Tip is great in a Turbo
Yea, I have to say the 997.1 Turbo Tip is still a hell of a car. The Tip goes better with the Turbo than non-Turbos because it permits the turbos to stay spun up compared to dropping off some with a 6MT
I have an 08 Turbo with a Ruf turbo conversion and an EVO chip. For a daily driver I hate the on and off the clutch in traffic and appreciate the way the car shifts with the Tiptronic S. Drive it like a maniac or sit back, turn up the tunes and cruise. This car is wicked fast especially in Sport mode.
The Porsche Tiptronic transmission is actually a Mercedes Benz 722.6 5 speed auto trans that was used a lot in their high HP high torque models like the E55 AMG and the McLaren SLR. This unit was known for being light weight and capable of handling 1000 HP/TQ. It was used in a lot of Chrysler products where it was known as the NAG1. When the Eurporean motor press was shocked that 997 Turbo was faster 0-100 kph with the Tiptronic than withe manual. That was something that wasn't much of surprise to us in America where drag racing is the most popular form of motorsports. An auto especially a well built one with a higher stall torque converter will always always beat a manual every time. This especially true for a turbocharged engine where there is never an interruption of boost or power during shifts as you would experience this with a manual trans no matter how fast or skilled the driver is.
I have 997,1 Turbo with tiptronic, I also have a manual 996 Turbo and a 355 F1. if I had to choose one it would still be the tiptronic! Lets face it, even if we all think that we are Michael Schumacher and Rossi 99% of us are not! 997 might be getting old but its still a very fast car and no way I am driving that without both hands on the wheel! Bet that 99% can't get the full performance out of a manual 997 turbo! The 355 I always use the paddles, never in full auto! Different cars fit different driving styles. And don't forget, when new the tiptronic is the more expensive and the Turbo is a sports/cruiser not a track car! If you want the manual so bad than you should also want rear wheel drive? That means a GT3! 997 Turbo is best with Metsger and Tiptronic! My opinion!
I am lucky enough to own a 997 turbo tip and SLK 55 AMG both 06 reg and I think the same gearbox. Both are a joy to drive, and for once someone has stuck up for the gearbox. Well Done Jay for a great review, and congrats on reaching a 100k milestone.
just traded the 997 manual C4S for the 997 turbo with the tiptronic. Spent a good bit more for the peace of mind of the Mezger in the turbo. there is an extra 100 horsepower in this trade-up. So far, the extra horsepower is nice and the tiptronic does not bother me but there's no doubt that I'll miss the visceral driving experience of the manual on a windy mountain road. agree with this guys take
My 2009 Turbo is also a Tip with ceramics. My 2012 is a PDK with Center lock wheels but not ceramic brakes. I like the TIp and the Ceramics best. The Tip shifts like the older muscle cars I grew up with, and I love the ceramics mainly because the wheels stay clean. I also think that the weight saving and marginally better braking is detectable for me. I would have also loved a manual, but that just was not an option for me at the time. These cars are so fast, I think I prefer to have both hands on the wheel when I play hard.
One thing that nobody talks about with the five speed tip Tronic is you don't have to worry about doing a clutch job that could cost you 6+ thousand dollars to do
The Tiptronic S is an upgrade to the original Tiptronic, with the ability to adapt to driver's behaviour, and also allows driver to change gears without entering manual mode. In manual mode, if there is no driver input for a period of eight seconds, the system reverts to automatic mode.
I have a 2008 997 911 turbo tiptronic. With my bolt on mods and tune I’m pushing a little over 520hp to the wheels. I can’t imagine trying to control all that power on a road car all while shifting with a clutch. I can just mash my gas pedal and in a blink of an eye I’m at 120 mph with my heart racing and a smile on my face. I’ll keep my tip tronic
I had a 997.1 Turbo tiptronic, I thought it suited the car perfectly. The tip allows you to focus on driving instead of shifting, which is nice when you're going 100+ mph
The internet is never the correct place to find the reality about cars. RR are unreliable, Ferraris burn down and the tiptronic boxes are the worst thing in the world. I think it suits very good to the 996-997 Turbo engines, especially on the road. Most people who buy them use them as a daily driver anyway. With a relatively small amount of money you can also upgrade the software which makes the gearbox more responsive. I am wondering if the average driver-owner of one of these can shift faster than what the time the tip needs if you select it yourself through those buttons. All these cars are amazing and have their own character and soul. In my book a true petrolhead is someone who can appreciate what a machine like this can offer and not the one that just goes for the V10 noise/sound-powerrrr-manual trifecta and 'shames' everyone else's choices. I always frown when people bitch about the wooshing sound of the Turbo - Porsche is more about go than show and personally i think it sounds awesome! Thanks for the video
... I have a similar tiptronic S in my 996 C4s and I have to say that it in combination with the engine in a power to weight 5kg/hp ratio , makes an amazing overall package ... Plus , that ratio is considered within the limit of the " Big Supercars Champions League " .... Anyway more than enough for me !... 👌👍
For me the argument about being able to shift more quickly is not really the point. I know that I can't, without any question, but the 997.2 GT3 RS shifter in my 996 Carrera is so enjoyable to use and I think I'd miss that experience. I want to move to a Turbo next and a 997 is a realistic proposition. The ~£10k difference between manual and tip is incredibly tempting... would I regret it though? "Not terrible" is hardly a glowing endorsement from someone that will have driven many 911's in many flavours. 1st world problems eh! :)
Patrick Beadle is suggest you drive both tip and manual turbos. You can’t compare a tip from any other variant as the turbo works very differently with this box due to its ferocious speed and only really having to use 2nd and 3rd gear so unsure where the manual box would actually help or be any better? In a Carrera where you’re constantly going up and down it’s understandable. Happy to take you out 👍🏻
I own a 996tt with tip . I live in Vancouver . Honestly when driving my Ferrari ( gated manual ) I rarely ever get into third gear unless on a bridge . Same with my tt . Personally the 15% less I paid for the car seems great value since shifting is almost nonexistent for me unless from first to second. Too each their own but I don’t regret the tiptronic purchase at all and after two plus years , I’m loving it . Also the lack of shifting allows my right hand to do other things while driving women around ;)
The tip box is like anything in life when it's different, doesn't conform with convention , it meets opposition. The tip box is actually very good and matches the car perfectly. I daily drive my car and fits in with my lifestyle. I have changed my steering wheel, that's my only complaint about the tip, the button placement . Steering wheel upgrade , problem gone for me. On the track you can just leave it , it kicks down well if you punch the accelerator and let it shift up in auto . Long live the tip box
That car is stunning. No omne has ever let me drive their turbo but from talmking to lots of Turbo owners most of them with Tip boxes they all seem to think the gearbox suits the car really well.
Full disclosure: James drive my 997 Turbo manual last year and it's the review that is on the channel. I've had a tiptronic Turbo and sold it because while it gave immense performance and was incredibly fast in all situations, it simply wasn't that enjoyable after having a 997.1 C2S. It lasted less than a year and I went and picked up the 997 Turbo manual which is much more involved as a driver's car. But the truth is that the Turbo is probably way too fast for UK roads and the C2S is possibly the pick of the 997s... As for people asking about reliability, the only issues I've had in 6 years have been with the AC condensers rotting out, and it's cost under £2,000 to maintain in that time.
Did you get a 997.2? or 997.1. I'm torn between at 997.1 (2007) or a 997.2. I love PDK but I so prefer the look of the .1 and sound. the .1 in question has had a full engine rebuild and it already has the stronger IMS. I haven't driven a manual in over 5 years so I'm worried about stalling and being an all round worse driver haha!
I had a 997.2 PDK and tracked it. Before that a 997.1 GT3. I could easily outpace 997.1 GT3s at the track. The PDK is a game changer. I drove manuals all my life and I’ll be damned if I’m going to drive the slower (manual) car
@@ruben9967 manual becomes unsteady at that high point. Honestly tiptronic isn’t probably better performance wise at that hp but the manual I probably more fun
Have a 997 Turbo here In Japan. Superb daily driver and faster acceleration than the manual. Would obviously prefer the manual version but so hard to find here. Great video!
I was looking for a manuel 997.1 turbo becouse the " internet" said it was better and i thought i would like it more than the tiptronic. I desided to testdrive the tiptronic too, just in case and i can tell you i prevered it over the manuel! Me personal, i think in this type of car with all its power the tiptronic is a better choise... For me it's nice to drive it relaxed in town in auto, instead of poking arround in the gears. But if you deside to race it put it in manuel and use the tiptronic to shift faster than manuel, its not a PDK but its not bad either... My advise to you if your interested in buying one, dont believe the hype and try them both!! Anyway you cant go wrong with both of them, its an absolute beast!! Its a very underestimated car with the last Mezger engine, prices will go up!
Ive the tiptronic 997.1 turbo i can say i like it even more than pdk :) that thing can hold huge amount of torque and power without any modifications into it
This video brings some very good points. I own a 996.2 GT3 Clubsport in Tokyo - and have many Porsche mates. While I'm a manual person myself, I think the tiptronic is a very solid unit. Many of us here in the Japanese Porsche community do respect the 997.1 LHD Tip as the "best buy" - no PDK issues that could cost a fortune (starting with the 997.2), the last mezger, and vastly cheaper than a manual. And significantly more power than the 996. Of course one can argue that the 996 turbo tiptronic is the best buy - 15% less than the 997, and a significantly more edgier design. But if you don't like the design of the 996, or it's slightly blunter handling, and the HP deficit - the 997.1 Turbo is a tremendously appealing car, for those who want to really put on the miles, without the constant worries. It may be different in London - but here the 997.1 Turbo Tip, is the under-the-radar car that can be used for daily errands, can be driven by the wife, and can go for the 320kph blast down the Wangan, chasing the GTRs, and GT3s. All without any tuning, that could put significant stress on the bodyframe.
From a tuners perspective, its easier to upgrade with a tiptronic than manual... since the manual clutch must be replaced when upping the horsepower. Also, once upgraded.. the torque is incredibly strong and flat from 2000-6000rpm .. there is little to little gear shifting needed when doing spirited driving on the road or a typical 1-2 mile track. With the Tip, basically only uses 2nd and 3rd gear .. 4th and up are for saving gas.. and nobody knows why there is a 1st gear??
I've got a .1 tt manual and you've missed the mark considerably. It's fine if you need to justify the Tip but make no bones about it the manual is by far the better option. If one is doing substantial power upgrades as I've done, replacing the clutch with a more substantial single mass fly unit is really not a big deal and truly transforms the car. Driving twisty roads and short courses requires all manner of shifting prowess, heel toe and rowing of the gear box - remember the car is geared for 200mph but it's not by any means geared "tall" especially on 1-2-3 positions
Been driving a manual for a while now, honestly would prefer a semi automatic for 'all out attack' seems like it's quicker shifting and can focus on steering better
I owned 993 Tip S back in 1996 and yes it wasn’t ultra responsive but it was 90% perfect for every thing else. Also had 997.1 with Tip S in 2006 and that was much much better. Then bought the wife a Boxster in 2013with PDK and that was and still is stunning. Tip doesn’t work well on track but PDK is fantastic... also ignore everyone that says you have to have optional paddle shift as opposed to buttons on wheel... I had both and preferred the ability to use you thumb palm to flick gear on both side of steering wheel. Hardly ever used the stalk based flippers on my Cayenne.
Agree on the paddle shifts.. and have seen some horrible mods on adding longer paddles onto the front of the button shifters.. really bad idea.. and scary for track!😳👍
I haven't tuned in for a week now as I'm now fully back at work after this COVID thing. So please accept my belated congratulations for breaking 100K subs. Nice one and well deserved.
Hi Jay, you made laugh out loud, as if i wrote your script. In 2008 i was at palmer sport and came away bitterly disapointed at the 996 tip, as soon as you mentioned Palmer i knew where you were going with those silver slow shifting 996's.... did not stop me getting a 991 manual though... keep up the great posts. Scott
There’s a reason why Manual Porsches are rare beasts, when you’re really going at it changing gear can take away from the visceral experience at high speeds. I love the PDK in my panamera turbo but I’m looking for 997 gen1 turbo tip, for weekends and tuning and wouldn’t ever consider a manual.
A couple of years ago I discovered the first tip boxes in the 996.1 were actually a ZF box. I think when the 3.6 engine was introduced in the 996.2 they changed to the Mercedes box as the old ZF box couldn't handle the extra torque. That the only reason I can think of anyway!
Been watching 996 and 997 turbo's for sale over the last couple of years and the tiptronic accounts for at least 75% of the cars for sale, I believe it was a lot more popular than the manual. due to how well it works with the massive torque of the turbo.
Bang on. There’s a lot of people who comment without knowledge. The tip isn’t as great in base models but in the turbo in my eyes it’s a perfect inbetween from Manual and leg ache. It changes quicker than a manual and if you wish to gun it, sport mode + 2nd and 3rd gear is all you need. The fun doesn’t last long if your right foot it flat so I tend to 1/2 or 3/4 throttle it most of the time.
My SLK AMG was the same, big torque rich 5.4l engine and an ok gearbox. You could be arguing with it requiring a downshift. But because of the flexibility of the engine it meant you didn’t need to change as much and so masked the 70% performance of the gearbox
I’ve got a 2.7 987 tiptronic because I couldn’t afford a manual and you still get the handling if not the acceleration. I’ve had a manual 986 2.7 and a manual 987 3.2s in the past and I’d put the tiptronic in the middle of the three. Auto not because I can’t be bothered changing manually but because when you get stuck in traffic jams especially on motorways it’s just so much easier.
Wow.. matching my three Box experience as well.. and totally agree with your assessment!! I still have the both 986 2.7 Tip, and a 987 ‘06 S manual.. having a hard time letting go of the former.. they are a very different driving experience.. but both fun to drive! Tiptronic is a learned experience.. I did not understand how to drive it properly until I track trained in it.. huge difference now when I drive it.. I think most people don’t understand how to use them to their advantage.. and added enjoyment!👍😎👍
I have a 2001 986 with tiptronic and sure it would be better with a manual. Reason being I'm old and used to manuals but in auto it doesn't let you choose that wonderful sound. I have a BMW 530i and that is suited to it and wouldn't change. I do use the manual side of the tiptronic a lot for said reason.
Before I bought a Porsche I desperately wanted a manual but eventually ended up with a tiptronic. But, I absolutely love it and wouldn’t want to change. I always drive it on ‘manual’ and it’s just great fun. Always two hands available for the steering wheel, faster shifting and as a result great acceleration. Respect for the purists tho.
I've got a 986S with a tiptronic and I reckon it's great for an auto. I do a bit of city driving as well as open road and it is very easy to live with. It's good fun when you do the double tap on the gas pedal to tell it you want to play.
986S 99” 2.5 love the vehicle it has enough torque down low and rev’s high with great shifting in auto or manual and also has enough power to weight with the perfect balance for phenomenal and handling! It’s a BLAST of a vehicle to drive in all conditions that’s also a fantastic convertible very diverse and best of ALL worlds! 🏁💨💨💨💨🥳👍
The manual car does 75mph in 2nd and 110mph in 3rd so while you're driving it hard on the road the only gear changes you'll ever do are 2nd to 3rd (and strictly even that shouldn't be necessary, particular since it's got more than enough torque to stay in 3rd 99% of the time anyway!) and back to 2nd. Great, that's really exciting, maybe one gear change every now and then! It's really just not worth worrying about. I'm afraid it's all just willy waving.
True. Almost anything in the US runs between 2nd and 3rd gear (110mph) so my tip is sick. Tho a manual feels way more visceral… le sigh… I wanted to save $10k.
I have a first gen Cayman S tiptronic. It’s not bad at all. Shifts in manual mode are nice and fast. But now I kind of wish that I got the manual, just for more driving joy. Also cool to learn more about the background of this gearbox. I guess if Mercedes was using it in turbocharged V12s then it must be pretty solid.
I drove a 996 Tip at Bedford Autodrome - had a paddle sift conversion and simply refused to downshift It was the only car I spun on the day - and I drove there in my own Porsche!
I always find it strange that a " cheap 911" is often the convertible with the auto box. As a driver who isn't about to attack the ring or book a track day,yet am attracted by the pull of the Porsche badge, the spec above would actually attract me to it.
Torquey engines work with all sorts of torque converter autos really well. The more modern the gearbox gets the less downside there is with any sort of engine. If you live in dense metropolitan areas with lots of traffic and going through city centres, like me, you'll appreciate a good auto box. That's why I don't bother that both my 91 Supra 3.0 turbo and my GT86 are automatics, plus the Lexus hybrid eCVT. I'll get manual cars as dealership loaners during service for 1-4 days per year and I absolutely don't miss a manual around here the other 360+ days. Especially if it's as miserable of a thing as in Toyota Aygos where 4 out of 10 times the reverse gear will fight you and call in sick for work.
The Turbo isn't a driver's car anyway. For a very fast GT car, of that time, i think that gearbox makes perfect sense tbh. IF i were interested in a Turbo, and could save a shit ton of money by chosing a Tiptronic, i'd go for one with no hesitation.
Finally someone hasn't posted a negative video about the tiptronic box 👏 I honestly don't think 10k on top just for a manual box is worth that extra more. 10k is a hell of a lot of money for someone like myself who is actually considering the tiptronic over the manual. All the other videos people post, they think everyone is rolling in cash 🤦♂️ like everyone is a millionaire 😂 they need to come down from their pedestals...idiots
I have lived with both tiptronic 997.1 (3 years) and PDK in my 997.2 Turbo S (3 years) and there is no comparison. I've seen referenced a number of times there is not a big difference between 997.1 and 997.2. I have owned and lived with both and to me there is no comparison, There are 30+ improvements, some crucial. The 997.2 is lighter, bullet proof DFI engines where the turbo version provided the architecture for all future turbos, torque vectoring & dynamic engine mounts (Turbo), new electronically controlled 4 wheel drive system over the old mechanical version (4,4S, Turbo), improved suspension, sustained extra power (Turbo S), Bi-Xenon and Led lights, upgraded quality materials, stereo and useable telemetrics. To me the 997.2 is the more resolved and honed car and perhaps the perfect Porsche for its size, and performance for the UK.
Unsure what your really comparing here. If I buy flowers from the shop 5 days ago and then buy some brand new ones today... the new ones are going to be shiny, brighter, feel better. If we compared 5 day old tulips to 5 day old carnations then this would have been a far better comment 👍🏻 There is also a 20k (50%) price difference which may also make your comment to some a little out of scope.
@UC5N-7XWr4zW6KsUnVv03PPQ he didn't claim the review was of the 997.2, he was merely expressing an opinion, probably because jayemm was discussing some features of the 997.2 eg how the gen 2 pdk compared to the tip
Thank you for your comments. Apologies for me not making it clearer. My first comment referred to this specific review when jayemm suggested there wasn’t much difference between Tiptronic and PDK. This led to my second comment based on previous jayemm reviews when a gen 2 997 wasn’t viewed as a big difference over a gen 1 997. I should have made it clearer but was taking the channels overall position. Both great cars of course.
@@stevefowler2112 Or you could put the £10k you saved into Bitcoin or another great crypto then sell it next year to pay off your house/buy a new 992.2.
I believe that auto is faster than manual of the line. Had 996 turbo with manual, hills sucked- getting fast of the line sucked too! I'm really thinking about 997 turbo auto, it's cheaper and it can hold 800hp n/p.
One thing to keep in mind is that with manual gearboxes you can mechanically overrev the engine. Too many people have gone into 3rd rather than 5th while accelerating hard and ended up damaging the engine. I believe on Porsche you can check how many times the engine has gone into mechanical overrev.
Most of the time, with sports cars or sporty cars, I’d prefer a manual for that extra element of connectedness to the vehicle and driving experience; however, I know what you mean and have felt the same way about other cars including the Audi B5 S4 and the Mk7 Golf R. The auto gearbox (whether true auto or DSG) can be the better way to go. For the B5 S4, with its softer suspension, the car would porpoise during gear changes while the tiptronic would not - the latter being more controlled and having a more seamless stream of power, too. Not to mention, the less than ideal shifter feel of that manual Audi gearbox. The same gearbox issue is present with the VWs, but I’d say even more so, the reason for choosing the DSG in the R, is the fact that the DSG seems to be a better pairing to the R’s motor characteristics - if that makes sense.
Tip suits this car better. Not a high rev motor, and it’s quiet, so no need to wind it out. 1st and 2nd gear come and go way too soon in a manual turbo, and you really need both hands on the wheel if you modify one of these. That’s just my experience and opinion.
Same case as the hate the automatic mkiv supra gets from people. It’s not any less potent but it makes the milk runs/ school runs more bearable. Cog swapping is great and all but I have come to re-love autos/tiptronics
A manual 997 cab is such a dream car for me, I’d love a C2S as a semi sensible daily, but a turbo would definitely be fun to try out even if I am a RWD guy
@Chritopher O'Grady shouldn't take long to save for one. Cabs go for about £9.99 because they're awful. And you would be lucky to get the top down 1 day a year in uk. Put it down go up the road pull over 5 mins later put it back up because its raining again. Lol
'generally' the ones that bag the Tip are the ones who have never driven one. The Tips are great and despite manual purists talking about the slower speed of shifting when compared with the PDK (which is true BTW), the Tip shifts faster than the manual (True) and you don't up banging your clutch knee on the dash, or get leg ache in traffic.
I just sold my 991 C2S with a manual as I have a left ankle injury and can no longer clutch. So I am in the camp that needs an auto. But Tip? No thanks. PDK for me. Tip is just not sporty enough.
I own a 997.1 Turbo tiptronic and simple words this gearbox makes this 911 a road eater rather than a track monster. Two things not to do with it:take the gear to the red line or shift up, down too fast,in generally speaking it works well, in traffic and leaving the city is heaven!
Jay, no disrespect but the tiptronic is not in the same league as the pdk, I had a 996.2C4 tiptronic (for whatever reason ahahah) and a 997.2 C4S pdk and there were on a different planet; yes tiptronic on auto mode in town n road cruising n motorways is pleasant but in manual mode it was unresponsive at its best; on the contrary the pdk could be happily used on a track/circuit in manual mode just as it could be as in any driving mode (manual/auto) for road, town, aggressive driving etc. But at the end nothing like a manual gearbox just as I have right now on a 997.1:-) good channel btw, keep it going
If think if I ever could afford a Porsche i wouldn't really car what box I had in it as I'd be using it for grand touring and in that case the auto would be best
There are different tiptronic boxes and ecu's for 996/997's. If you get the chrono sport plus package regardless of car you get different ecu settings and sport clutch packs etc. Why some are lazy and others are high performance.
I had one a 2009 in black my only gripes were the seats felt too narrow and the button gearchange interface was annoying though a 997 paddle conversion would have been cool
As a purist I always thought that a manual Turbo would always be superior to an auto. However last year I had a test drive in a (beautiful) 996 Turbo and was very underwhelmed with the quality of the gear change. My conclusion was, maybe the auto might better suit the character of the car. As a footnote I also once drove a 996 C4S and felt that the Tip box ruined that car. 🤔
@@Aurum458 Hi, I drove the 996 Turbo for a friend that was looking to acquire the car. He agreed that the gear shift and engine sound was inferior to his 997 Carerra so decided not to buy the car.
@julianadams2206 cheers for replying to such an old comment. Thanks for your insights. Where i'm looking at buying one eventually (Singapore), 997.1 Turbo Tiptronics trade for roughly the same price or slightly more than a 997.2 C2S PDK...not sure which would be better but leaning towards the Turbo because Singapore is a city state with straight roads. Only one real winding road to really explore the limits of grip.
I had the 996 turbo and went from Switzerland to italy (Venise) to buy a 997 turbo tiptronic. I was so disappointed that I came back by train. Even if the stats are way better tant the 996, the feeling doesn t come close. I had the feeling I was riding a à hoover
I sold 997 new at a dealer many years ago and HATED Tip gear boxes - except in the Turbo, that engines works really very well with that box. 👍
What’s wrong with the tiptronic on base 997?
What's there to hate? I owned a 2011 panamera 4 for 3 years with first gen dual clutch pdk and now own an 03 996 tip cabrio now for 3 years aswell. As a matter of fact the time lag to change gears is the same, can't notice the difference. As a daily driver tip is great and bullet proof!
Apparently PDK without Sports Chrono is fairly similar to Tiptronic.
Work good on 996 TT too
Owned manual cars for many years and no longer keen on driving them in traffic. On the open road they can be nice but in town they're a pain. In any case this car has a huge amount of torque low down the rev range so one can execute ferocious overtakes without even changing gears. I'd take the tiptronic without hesitation.
The tiptronic because the wife drives us home from the pub.
I'll use that excuse but also because I prefer auto...
Truer words have NEVER been spoken
Good man!
Nice, but the Trip S equipped 997s are still one hell of a great ride.
Underrated comment
Thank you for the comment. It’s great to see actual experience rather than speculation reviews 👌🏻
Same here, Not only that a few C2S tips are always at the front of that pack too.
A very beautiful and capable car regardless of the gearbox.
My opinion!
The best looking 911 turbo. Wheels are perfect 😍

Used to love em but they’ve aged to my eyes if I ever I’d have bbs like on 997 gts models
Totally agree with you!👍
One thing that nobody talks about with the five speed tip Tronic is you don't have to worry about doing a clutch job that could cost you 6+ thousand dollars to do
Dude I don’t know where you get your car worked on but a manual 997 GT3 clutch is $3000.
This is true until the torque converter packs up!
The Tiptronic S is an upgrade to the original Tiptronic, with the ability to adapt to driver's behaviour, and also allows driver to change gears without entering manual mode. In manual mode, if there is no driver input for a period of eight seconds, the system reverts to automatic mode.
100K!! You did it! Huge Congratulations James! Looking forward to the content that'll take you past 200K!
Does it have the shifters on the wheel? The only tip I've owned was an is300 and they were on the steering wheel which was nice.
100% agree.
5-speed auto 'box and turbo torque. Imagine how much of an effortless cruiser a 997.1 Turbo can be.
I had a 997.1 Turbo tiptronic, I thought it suited the car perfectly. The tip allows you to focus on driving instead of shifting, which is nice when you're going 100+ mph
I had a 996 turbo stick and now have a 997.1 turbo with Tiptronic and love it.
Thank you for your comment. It’s very well explained and obvious I’d agree 👍🏻
I appreciate your comment. Then again I would be that person to go for the v10 manual combo xD
Stephen owen - Agree . Btw what kind of steering wheel you used to replace de original ?... Anything with shift paddles ?...
The Turbo has Tiptronic S, it was the first Porsche with auto that was advertised as quicker than the manual to 60.

For higher hp-numbers (750+) the tiptronic is the better way to go, as it can handle much more power than the manual transmission.
The other way arround, the manual is stronger

I've been seriously looking into one of these as a daily driver and you post this Jay... 😁

It would definitely sell 👍
I was a manual man but after loosing my right leg above the knee I am afraid a auto with left foot excelerator adaption is the only option now 😥
I always thank you and all who think like you for keeping these excellent cars somewhat affordable.
Ive the tiptronic 997.1 turbo i can say i like it even more than pdk :) that thing can hold huge amount of torque and power without any modifications into it
I also like the tip for the smoothness around town and in traffic. PDK grind a bit at low speeds
PDK has “character” - Tip is probably better objectively.
@@cw4744 I'd rather have the manual .. but it is easier and cheaper to up the power with the Tiptronic, since for moderate HP increases (
Been driving a manual for a while now, honestly would prefer a semi automatic for 'all out attack' seems like it's quicker shifting and can focus on steering better
pdk is what you need need !
Having 5 long gears and turbo torque sounds fantastic
I installed a Tubi catback in my 997.1 Turbo and it did improve sound and hp, it's worth every penny
I'm going to go ahead and congratulate you on 100K subs...well deserved!!!
Welcome back, and thankyou
Interesting, I've heard others say the Tiptronic actually suits the character of the Turbo a bit. Never driven one myself.

No, it’s about price this time. These mannies don’t come cheap
"General bimbling duties", love the description of average driving 😂
I drove a 996 Tip at Bedford Autodrome - had a paddle sift conversion and simply refused to downshift
It was the only car I spun on the day - and I drove there in my own Porsche!
The 996 tiptronic wasn't as good as the 997
I always find it strange that a " cheap 911" is often the convertible with the auto box.
As a driver who isn't about to attack the ring or book a track day,yet am attracted by the pull of the Porsche badge, the spec above would actually attract me to it.
You find it strange that most people don't share your preferences?
Auto cabs cost more new so it’s objectively odd they’re considered cheap…
The tip gearbox is great for the base Carrera as well. I don't get why people don't like it
Torquey engines work with all sorts of torque converter autos really well.
Brilliant comment, thank you 👌🏻

If we compared 5 day old tulips to 5 day old carnations then this would have been a far better comment 👍🏻
There is also a 20k (50%) price difference which may also make your comment to some a little out of scope.

tiptronic is better in every way, it's faster it never misses a shift, and doesn't lose tenths of seconds every shift that you get with a manual.
What you mean is, it's faster. It isn't "better in every way"
Congrats on 100k man, love your vids.
Yes you can indeed and this is another great reason to have a tip or PDK. Idiot proof.
My mate had a 991 Gen 2 turbo with a DMS tune and over 750bhp. It's silly quick but given the choice for a spirited drive I'd still take my R8.
Yup disappointingly low redline and they sound quite uneventful in std form - very German and ‘sensible’
I prefer something with more emotion.
They may be AWD but they drive in a very RWD manner
@Chritopher O'Grady shouldn't take long to save for one. Cabs go for about £9.99 because they're awful. And you would be lucky to get the top down 1 day a year in uk.
Put it down go up the road pull over 5 mins later put it back up because its raining again. Lol
Not terrible.. that is high praise 👏
Also massive congrats on 100k look forward to seeing your play button 👍
The only good thing about the tiptronic box is that it makes the first generation PDK feel space-age [tonque-in-cheek]
Guess how many times i have had that mental conversation. Still waiting for a manual
I just sold my 991 C2S with a manual as I have a left ankle injury and can no longer clutch. So I am in the camp that needs an auto.
But Tip? No thanks. PDK for me. Tip is just not sporty enough.
So not just the tip?
Tip is much better for city driving.
Just the tip is not enough for this man.
I own a 997.1 Turbo tiptronic and simple words this gearbox makes this 911 a road eater rather than a track monster. Two things not to do with it:take the gear to the red line or shift up, down too fast,in generally speaking it works well, in traffic and leaving the city is heaven!
Used the gearbox in the xkr till 2002. Good gearbox went in the slr McLaren because of the torque.
100k subscribers looking likely by the weekend. Congrats in advance 👍🏻
Being from the States and watching these videos of the cars coming at you on "the wrong side of the rode"
gives me anxiety....
Well done Jay. The sky’s the limit now!
I know this comment is 3 years old but did you manage to try out a Tiptronic Turbo (996 or 997) at some point after that?

Hi, I drove the 996 Turbo for a friend that was looking to acquire the car.
I would rest my case on this tiptronic perspective!
Congrats on 100k Subs!!
I think you were mistaken and a turbo S was available in the 997 MY
The auto in the 928 is also a Mercedes unit. The answer is simple, MB was always making the best autos so Porsche always bought their autos from MB.
What's maintenance one one of these is it a hassle? How much and what to look out for?
Both my hip joints are FUBAR. Lower back slightly less FUBAR. Auto trans for me now.
