I’m not an expert in the Nigerian music industry, but I can say that her growth and development is organic, not forced. It’s been coming for decades. Nigerian contemporary Afrobeats began to take shape in the early 2000s. It began by the artists realizing that the best market was the local market. They saw a huge appetite in Nigeria and they set out to satisfy this. There was no agenda. The only agenda was to make money off of the huge local market and it was individual artists doing their things and learning from one another’s success. They stepped up their game and Nigerians started appreciating their music.
Mention must be made of Mohits (Don Jazzy, D’Banj and co), Kennis Music, Tuface, etc.
There was never a talk in Nigeria of banning foreign music and I’ve never seen a Nigerian blog or channel moaning about foreign music dominating the Nigerian market. The Government, local artists and DJs never held any meeting about local content. There was a time when Nigerians were paying foreign artists huge money to come perform.
Afrobeats artists are making waves worldwide, but they first began by conquering the home market. This happened over time and it was not forced. Nigerians grew to appreciate the quality of work of these artists. Also, Nigerian artists do not work based on sentiments. They have mastered the business side of music. They can work with anybody, anywhere and adopt any sound as long as it promotes their craft. They don’t have any agenda to dominate any country or continent; their agenda is their pocket and that is enough motivation to put in their best in their craft. Since the local market is very competitive, they know that they have to constantly evolve and meet the evolving needs of fans in order to stay relevant. There was never a meeting of producers or music executives or even artistes, but they all have some things in common- drive to make money, attentiveness to the needs of the fans (to what sounds), dynamism and openness to new ideas.
The Nigerian “superstars” are not necessarily the most talented in Nigeria, but they’ve been at it for at least a decade- that shows consistency, tenacity, hard work, and determination - Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa, Don Jazzy, P-Square, Tuface, etc…
More stars in the making, because they have seen that music also pays 💵.
Afrobeats will keep evolving- for instance, the producers realized that Nigerians like the Amapiano sound from SA and they are starting to incorporate it into their sound. At every point in time, their first goal is to blow locally.
What I see about other African countries is a desire to compete with Nigerians ( which is not necessarily a bad thing), but without realizing that there is a process- you can’t jump through hoops and expect to be on the same level as one who has gone through a process spanning decades. You can’t cram a decade worth of development and growth into a few months or years.
King Promise is a talented lad- I like him a lot, but it’d be unfair to him if you compared him with Davido or Wizkid(guys who have been at this for at least 10 years).
I’d advise other counties in Africa to trust their own process, respond to the musical needs of their people, be open to new ideas, and learn from others without negativity.

Now we getting shine everybody wan hate and suddenly become musicians now by either copying us or dissing us. It's pathetic.

My observation is that Nigerian music is far beyond Shatta Wale's hate speeches. If you make good music, regardless of where you come from or what language you speak, people all over the world will vibe to it. I was at a client's house who was listening to Nigerian songs, I told him I like the beats, then he asked where am i from?, I told him Nigeria, then he said he's a Ghanaian. If you want to grow, you've got to be deliberate about it, work hard, collaborate strategically with artists from other Nations, etc.

The Ghanaian music industry 🎼🎤should be thanking Nigerians 🇳🇬🇳🇬 in the comment section for giving them FREE and VALUABLE advice on how to improve their music industry because, we all know say if na consultation fee starting $100 per hour for this kind advise. Sometimes I wonder if Nigerians should leave them in their perils because they seem too arrogant to take valuable advise. Plus we also know you are using Nigeria’s name to catch views & comments , but this Negative way is not the right way to go about it.

Ghanaian artists should learn exploring and find a sound that’s not just appealing to the Ghanaian audience alone.
They should maintain originality while doing so, I believe if y’all stick to highlife then refine it, trust me it’s going to explode.
Promotion and branding too are key factors, content creation and anticipation too, invest on new talents with fresh sounds, people get bored easily so learn to always evolve with your sounds.
Sign to Nigerian labels no shame, they’ll rebrand and push your songs. No body wan lose, don’t try to copy Nigerian pattern as it will be the worse decision, you can’t beat us at it

Ghana leave entertainment/music industry for Nigeria is their heritage, Nigeria is the heartbeat of Africans when it comes to music be it secular or gospel, just like Kenyans being the best in marathon race, Jamaicans good at track and field, Chinese good at technology, England having the best media across the Europe, South Africans being good in swimming and rugby. So enough of all these Nigeria and Ghana banter because Nigerians are just getting started. Nigeria music has made Africa to be recognized globally via music sector. Blacks outside Africa are now proud of Afro beat and the vibes.

My dear Ghanian brothers, sisters and Africans in diaspora, let me make this simple for you all as a Nigerian and a fellow African. There was an awakening that started in the late 2000 about the world becoming a global stage for all to future, which gave birth to the current globalization of the African music experience that we are experiencing right now in Africa and the world at large, which everyone is now scrambling for a fair share of this movement and the benefit that comes with it.
What we did as Nigerians is that we looked into our culture, our way of life and our story telling ability which is embedded in our Africanisms knowing fully that we cannot be like anyone else on the global stage of music but ourselves as Africans. So, we took advantage of our sounds and started experimenting with new tech in music fusions and WE EVOLVED and made progress with the understanding of what type of sound the world at large wants hear, listen and enjoy when it comes to African music. So, what we’ve done with the Nigerian Music is called differentiation.
This understanding is what has paved this pathway for us and it came with a lot of hard work, Sacrifice and orderly thinking that has birth new ground breaking sounds that bridge cultures on a global scale. Simple!
We are still working hard at it; we’re not going to stop but continue to make progress with new learnings, because we’ve learnt a lot along the way. So, there’s still more to do and learn from. PLEASE START YOUR JOURNEY AND STOP THE CRITICISMS. Stop feeling entitled and drowning yourselves in self-pity but look inward for every resource available to you and start refining, defining and put in the work progress awaits you on this journey. We move...

Great dialogue. I would say like y’all said, it’s the important “behind the scenes” things of the music industry side that we don’t really have working for us. It’s not about the artiste or the sound, we make good music too. Another problem is that there are a few artistes we have that make really good music. I don’t think any other African country, not just Ghana, is going to reach the level Nigeria is at when it comes to their music quality and influence. Let’s be real.

Music isn’t just about singing. Music carries swag; music carries message. As a musician, ask yourself what your fans associate you with.
The reason Davido got so big isn’t just that he sings good music. He was able to define himself as a rich kid who just wants to enjoy his life and not be disturbed. This subliminal message resonated with millions of Nigerian youth who wished for the same kind of life. That’s why Davido is known as OBO. It’s not just because he sings good music. Lots of artistes in Naija sings good music too, eg Victor AD. But they will never be as big as Davido, because they haven’t defined themselves and what they represent.
Study all Naija artistes and you’ll see they all have something they represent. As an artiste, your style and essence must appeal to your fans. If you behave like a yahoo boy, your songs will appeal to yahoo boys. If you behave like slay queens, your songs will appeal to slay queens. If you behave like a boss, your song will appeal to millions of people who wish to be a boss someday. Likewise if you behave like a tout, your songs will appeal to touts a lot.

The beefing and fighting spirit in the GH music industry needs to stop too. It's childish and makes artists feel they are doing something when they are doing nothing that counts. If Shatta was not the type to cause trouble would there not be a track with him, Stonebwoy and Sark already? Would it not have banged? He even goes for the veterans. When he came for Tinny, I was so annoyed. I thought how dare he! It's like someone coming for 2face, trust me Nigerian fans will end your career if an artist tries that. GH artists are shortsighted and put energy in the wrong things. Nigerian fans would NEVER stand for that behaviour from our artists. Even if Nigerian artists don't get along, we don't expect it to be made our business. We don't like wahala from our artists. Ghanaian fans seem to love it though, which is unhelpful.

Nigerian artists are liberal and aims staying relevant, as well earn as much - that drives their passion to exploit every available options. They aren't negatively competitive, rather healthy.
One more secret about 9ja artists, is the openness to carry along and invest in younger artists, sometimes freely.
Burna Boy recent love and collaboration with young Black Sheriff should give you a clue.
He has seen something exciting and hopefully evolving from that young man's brand of talent, and has jumped in to push him - of course which will eventually payoff for both parties.
Once that brand of Sheriff's new trend hits the larger audience, through this Burna collaboration - I bet you, 9ja artists will healthily fine tune and add more craft to that trend..
    That's it.

Facts are Ghanaians artists are doing pretty well. My candid advice is that they should not always be at their comfort zone if they want to be known. They are too layback. When you rove out of your comfort zone, good things happen sometimes. The Nigerian artists you always see in Ghana don’t come because Ghana is too beautiful.

That is what the Ghanaians don’t know. They think it is too beautiful that is why our artistes comes there. Their jealousy and hatred for Nigeria won’t make them come because they know Nigerians don’t support haters and as long as we don’t support, they are going nowhere

@@timmarshal72 I think this issue of Ghanaian music not making waves continentally and globally is the nature of their music. If u look at it Ghana has never had any legend that was know across African. In the 70's we had Fela from Nigeria, Alpha blondy from Senegal, Manu d bango from Cameroon, Salif keita from Mali, Papa wemba, Kofi olomide, Awilo from Congo, Maria makeba from south Africa etc. But Ghana never had such individuals that gave them global presence.

@@Osas4Ray Copying Nigerian pidgin and slang like all these Ghanaians do is not helping them. They are always too timid to push their own culture unlike the Nigerians. Thats why they rely on copying Nigerians and Jamaicans not realizing no one knows them for them because the are too scared to be their true selves. Fela Kuti would never have created Afrobeat and pushed it in the UK/US if he were a Ghanaian instead of a Nigerian.

Y’all are not getting it! Just advice your artist to change their style of music, make international music, if you know what it takes to make international music then the problem is solved!!! Why was Shatta Wale not speaking Ghana language in the track with Beyoncé ? Because it’s international right? So get it right

The problem with my country Ghana is that, nobody wants to hear the underground. The songs I hear everyday in studios are 🔥🔥 but the industry people don't want to see them. If Banky didn't take that chance, where will WizKid have been? So the big artist need to blend downstairs and stop looking down on the raw talents. The hits are all in the ghetto studios ma people.
