- Coriolis and Eotvos Effects: What are they, what causes them and how do they affect aircraft and projectiles?
NOTE: The mathematics here are simplified to the extreme, this is not a simple trig problem, it is a calculus problem. Here is why- An assumption was made that the full force of coriolis at 2000 yards held for the entire 2000 yards. That is untrue technically. Viewing coriolis with the analogy of the 'crosswind' during the first 100 yards of flight, the bullet had a crosswind of more or less zero, during the last 100 yards it was at 0.21 mph, with each 100 yards experiencing more an more cross wind until it reached the full 0.21 mph. Second, the bullet would slow, spending more time in the last 100 yards than the first, again increasing in time spent in each 100 yard segment from barrel to target. When all of this is factored in (please post a proper answer if you calculate one) the end result will be about 6-8 inches I suspect rather than 14. I used maximal numbers to illustrate the point (due north full difference in rotational speed) to demonstrate the maximum possible effect.
Easter egg. I'm having a contest for the best facial hair in FE, Vote 1 for Miguel and 2 for Red Pill. We all know I have the best stach in science.

Hey there is one correction to be made. Though this is a very understandable way to explain this, it is not the full explanation and I was incorrect in one place as a result. It makes no difference in what direction you shoot. Coriolis will make the round curve right in the n hemisphere and left in the southern and the amount of curve is only dependent on your latitude.
Pretty sure it's pronounced "oot vosh" or thereabouts. The final s is less the silibant and more like "sh".
Your explanation was clear and concise enough for a kindergartner to understand. Unfortunately I don't think it's possible to make where a flat earther could understand it. Have a wonderful day Bob.

@S̷H̷I̷L̷L̷S̷ ̷V̷S̷ ̷S̷H̷I̷L̷L̷S̷ Why don't you try and refuting both the Coriolis effect and the eotvos effect then? These two effects can be observed by anyone at any time, it's as if the things science tells us are true, imagine that! If the earth was flat there would be absolutely no reason for these two effects, they would simply not happen, but the do because the earth is a globe and rotates around it's axis.
@S̷H̷I̷L̷L̷S̷ ̷V̷S̷ ̷S̷H̷I̷L̷L̷S̷ You flattards do not even know what the word fact means. Pathetic cult of ignorance.
@S̷H̷I̷L̷L̷S̷ ̷V̷S̷ ̷S̷H̷I̷L̷L̷S̷ a compass disprove the globe?? OK try to explain that! Write it down in an ordenary way, and without any fler talking points.
@S̷H̷I̷L̷L̷S̷ ̷V̷S̷ ̷S̷H̷I̷L̷L̷S̷ A compass does not debunk the globe. What you will find is that you don't understand a bunch of stuff and are then thinking those things don't or can't happen. There are NO holes in the globe earth model only holes in your understanding of the globe earth model.
Again, there's nothing in science that says will or won't happen which turns out to be incorrect or false. I think you will find that it's impossible on a flat earth to have a magnetic field that would be exactly the same shape as we observe it to be on a globe earth.
US Marine here. BULLSHIT... I'm not even infantry. I'm a POG (personnel other-than grunt). We learned about the basics of the Coriolis effect, and the fact that it does not come into effect under most combat situations. Only at very long ranges does it come into play.

Also, thank you for your service Bob.
You can see the effects of Coriolis at 500 you could be about a MOA off, at 1000 yards that could be you not hitting your target even close to centered. At 2000 yards that can been feet off. Once you get into Ultra long range the difference is drastic.

Some interesting points to this guys story (fairy tale). I am a Marine, there is no such thing as a former or ex Marine, period. Marine snipers are selected from the top shooters across the Corps, not real sure a machine gunner would be selected as a sniper candidate. Marine snipers are a two man team, a shooter and a spotter so I doubt if you would be ale to "flank" a sniper team. I also had in the past shot high power rifle competition. never ahd to factor in coriolis as 500 meters was max range for me. During practice and competition you have, what I refer to as, a weapons "dope" book. This is to recird all the variables for each shot such as time of day, sun position, wind speed and direction, air temperature, range to target, etc. I would go as far as recording the ammo lot number for competition. There was also a section for your sight in shots usually a three shot group at 100 yds. for your initial correction factors (moa sight adjustment) with same type information. fairly certain a dedicated sniper would have the same type book with a lot more information and any coriolis effect would be eliminated with the adjustment for the aforementioned variables. Finally, Wolfie6020 posted a video last week on the coriolis effect on aircraft. Apologize fir lengt of comment but flerfrs who claim to be sniper savvy in this subject irritates the hell out of me. The hours I spent practicing to be a fairly proficient shooter pales in comparison what dedicated snipers spend honing their skills. I apologize for length of this comment. As always a huge fan of your work. From the depths of the bayou I bid you adieu.
thank you for your post and your service.
I would also like to point out that firing at a different target would not change a correction due to Coriolis given that correction is not based on the location of the target but on your own location. So he's very clearly talking out of his tailpipe.

A point of correction. As sombody who has had to fire the Barret in anger I can say that it was never designed to be a "sniper" rifle. Its purpose is a anti material weapon. The semi auto with a barrel that recoil makes it very inaccurate at long range, especialy if you need to fire a 2nd shot. The barrel never recoil back to the same postion. You can thump a engine block from 2000 yards away but good luck on hitting bad guy. Yes it's been done but it's not a normal thing. We used ours mostly for dealing with VBID/ IED and personnel behind cover (wall or steel plate).
What accuracy at long range then the Accuracy International Super Magnum (L115A1) is your weapon of choice. It will reach out and touch the ones you dislike the most. Had 2 at our FOB in Afghanistan and they can put lead on target out too 1900m (our best) with confirmed kills out to 2475m by a British Soldier.
Edit:
Also, the CheyTac M200 is a nasty weapon also. It can hit out to 3000m but due to the bullet going from super sonic to trans sonic to sub sonic at those ranges the round becomes unstable. Only fired the M200 20 times and that was at a finalization range out to 1500m and was nats ass accurate.

We call them Walt’s. They wear uniforms and even medals to ceremonies and have no right to do either. If I met him I would talk about how in the UK we have service numbers (mine ends 3873) and ask if they do the same in the Marines. Having asked what his number was I would wait a few minutes and then repeat the question. You could wait ten years between asking for my service number and I would give the same answer.

Excellent video as always, Bob, greetings from Norway :-)
Well done Bob. One minor point of improvement: It's worth reinforcing more strongly that even at sniper ranges where coriolis has a noticeable effect, that effect is often smaller than the inherent accuracy of the weapon. Which means that factoring in coriolis force does not make the difference between hitting the target and missing it, it improves the probability of actually hitting the target. Eg: if you're shooting at a tall target 20 inches wide, with a rifle of an inherent uncertainty of 20 inches off centre, you have a 50%-ish chance of hitting it. But if coriolis force has an displacement of 10", for example, ignoring it means your 50% has just become 25%.
I remember reading somewhere a comment from the DoD about ultra-accuracy on sniper rifles. It said, roughly, the goal is to do the training and provide the equipment to hit exactly where you want every time at any range. There's many relatively obscure forces in addition to coriolis forces (eg: spindrift) that can be factored in without burdening the shooter too much, however, even measuring wind speed and direction can be subject to so much error, that the obscure forces get swamped, so at least at the basic sniper training level it's simply not worth teaching the obscure stuff. But the true experts push themselves beyond the basics to get the best possible results and are willing to expend the effort to "do it all". There are manuals for those too. I think I did find coriolis in the advanced army manuals, not the basic ones.
You didn't say much about battleships, despite the intro. I found this gem:
The necessity of accounting for the Coriolis force by battleship gunners is discussed in Marion's mechanics book. The relevant paragraph is quoted here:
"During the naval engagement near the Falkland Islands which occurred early in World War I, the British gunners were surprised to see their accurately aimed salvos falling 100 yards to the left of the German ships. The designers of the sighting mechanisms were well aware of the Coriolis deflection and had carefully taken this into account, but they apparently were under the impression that all sea battles took place near 50 degrees N latitude and never near 50 degrees S latitude. The British shots, therefore, fell at a distance from the targets equal to twice the Coriolis deflection." (Classical Dynamics of Particles and Systems, Second Edition - by Jerry B. Marion, Academic Press, Inc., 1970, p.346 fn.)
I did exactly that in the video
@@BobtheScienceGuy I know you did - I saw it go past. But given how important the point is, and it deals with (oh my gosh, the horrors) "probabilities" you have to put HEAVY EMPHASIS on the "it's not generally NECESSARY to apply coriolis (or spindrift or the other ones) forces in long range sniping, but it will sometimes GREATLY improve your chances of hitting what you're shooting at".
The WW1 Falklands battle snippet is a great example.
Besides, the high end sniper scopes (we're talking the $15K and up ones) calculate this shit for you

This is a very good video.
A few other, perhaps insignificant, details about planes and bullets.
A bullet is a ballistic object. It gets its impulse at the starting point, and from the moment it leaves the barrel (or maybe I should include the exhaust from the barrel), its path is described by the mass, velocity, and the external forces acting on it.
An airplane is not a ballistic object. An airplane is propelled by engines that are part of the object itself as it flies through the atmosphere. Though it is also subject to external forces, it is able to exert force to counteract those external forces and does not have to rely on momentum alone. Even in non-powered flight, an aircraft is able to exert forces on the air around it, and should not be considered a ballistic object.
Can you do an addendum for falling objects? That would be very enlightening. All Nathans will enjoy it too.
Thanks for the information Bob, I found it very interesting and informative.🖤
Being English and never been near or ever needing a gun.
I would never of thought that the earth's spin made a difference on a bullet that is going so fast. But I have wondered about if it made a difference over distance especially for snippers. Being I play a lot of video games that are first person shooters, where I am often a snipper.

As an ”expert ” on classical Mechanics I really like the Coriolis Effect (and the Foucault pendulum): Principle of Least Action, Lagrange equations, rotating frame of reference . Just beautiful! Well the Eötvös effect is actually a component of the Coriolis force. The Coriolis force has a component parallel to the surface of the earth (the “normal “Coriolis effect) and a component pointing in the direction of the radius of the earth ( up or down) . This is the Eötvös Effect. The explanation with added centrifugal force is of course also correct. Some mathematics explanation....

Richard Feynman:
“When I was in high school, my physics teacher called me down one day after class and said, “You look bored, I want to tell you something interesting”. Then he told me something I have always found fascinating. Every time the subject comes up I work on it.”
Feynman’s teacher told him about the “Principle of Least Action”, one of the most profound results in physics.
Feynman received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965.
I think BoB did a great job at pointing the relevant fact: Coriolis effect is real, but is small so there are other factors that often "mask" the effects. People deal with the other effects and take care of the coriolis at the same time. It only comes in to relevance in some cases like the artillery. In short, it is always present, but often not big enough that it requires adressing. Great video Bob.

As far as I know, that is not nearly far enough for the effect of Earth's rotation to change your shot. If I am not mistaken, most shots made by snipers are 500 meters and closer.
Also, what kind of range does this guy have where he can set up shots 600 yards in two directions?
we have 600 here. Just one direction. Thanks for your service
If you really need to hit a specific human sized area at maximum range with your first shot, you have to adjust for everything you can. If you are suppressing, have a large target, or going after something that can't move, you can just walk the shots.
You spoke of 600 yard targets as if it wasn't a big deal. Maybe not for you but I know that most of us would love to hit that distance like it's no big deal also but thats just not the case for most of us.
A sniper once explained to me how he did this very test to demonstrate eotvos on a salt flat. More than enough room to fire due east or west 1km. Under identical conditions of time equipment, distance, shooter etc, he explained how the ranging computer used the inbuilt azimuth of the computer to adjust the elevation accordingly. Recording his shots by somehow having a phone showing what he was aiming at ( to show he was being consistently accurate to the best of his ability) he fired both east and west. When he applied the elevation adjustment recommended by the computer he matched his accuracy of firing east to firing west. When he did not, he consistently dropped short.
Just takes experience and good equipment that you know how to use
You always make all things clear. Great job on this one.
During World War 2 the British had to recalculate their ballistic calculations as the manufacturers only provided calculations for the Northern hemisphere
1:00 This guy has probably never even served in the military. And if he did, it was more than likely as a cook or a book keeper.
I was in the ARMY and it matters not what you did, you served.
Not my point at all.
@@ReneeNme implied by your comment.
You're reading in between the lines. Not helpful in common commentary.
@@osonhouston he's obviously referring to the claim of him being an expert sniper just for being in the military, because of his friend. At the same time while admitting not being a sniper.
Hi Bob. Greetings from Southeastern Lower Michigan.
Iron Mountain is a cool place to visit. Whitefish Point is a great semi-on-the-way stop if time allows.
Great video. This has got to be the easiest to understand Coriolis effect explanation I've heard. Thanks for doing this for us and for covering the effect on airplanes. I was hoping you would include them, I was already hearing the protestations from flerfs otherwise.
Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing your completed, new studio. Please do a quick tour video update if time allows.
once I work the bugs out and catch up I will. It is done on the cheap and might be useful to other content creators.
That was most informative, thanks Bob
Well done, Bob.
Great job Bob as usual! Thanks for taking the time to put this together.
I often wonder why these idiots don't take the time to read up on the subjects and phenomena they claim don't make sense instead of creating a simple-minded version they can understand but i think the answer is then they woulds have ro admit their foolishness and that can't be true.
Nice explanation indeed. Thanks!
Thank you Bob. I have tried explaining this many times, but my articulation was lacking.
Awesome guide to those, thank you Bob :) ThatGuy could use this lesson, he pipes on about this all the time....
Oh yeah, I em making a 3D Flat Earth model in Blender, to show that it can not work the way they say. I em also making the 3D Earth. I em Also a 75th Army Ranger, I am also a sniper and weapons person The longest shoot made is only 2,475 m (2,707 yd) shots (confirmed by GPS) in November 2009 that wouldn't even come close to the Curve of the Earth. When I get done with my 3D model I will send it to you. For your Channel. Peace and love to one and all
thank you for your service. That was a Canadian BTW I believe. Something to think about if he covertly deploys there. They might get pissed.
@@BobtheScienceGuy If I remember correctly, they utilized US ammo that time.

Here you go Bob...
The Canadian sniper has never been named as far as I know...
He was a Joint Task Force 2 sniper, an elite special forces.

"The longest shoot made ..." 2702 yd was by a UK sniper in 2009. This record has been broken twice since then :

" Less understood and less predictable is the Coriolis Effect. This is not an aerodynamic
effect, but the slight pull of earth’s rotation on a bullet, pulling it a tiny bit right or left. Seldom considered by riflemen because it’s only a concern at extreme ranges, this deviation varies according to where the shooter is located, and the direction of his fire. It’s greatest on the poles and least on the equator, and the closer a shooter is to firing directly east or west, he can minimize its impact. However, again, calculating the effect requires a ballistic computer and, I suspect, most snipers make their best guess and take the shot"
Excellent analysis. If flerfers could do maths for themselves then maybe Coriolis wouldn’t be such a mystery to them - of course then they’d have to recognise that the earth IS actually revolving...
I’m surprised that the Barratt only groups to 1.5 MOA. I would have expected better. Maybe that’s worst case for a cold barrel shot followed by a warm barrel shot. Then again the M82 is semi-auto and I’m more accustomed to a single shot bolt action which should (in theory) offer better accuracy - especially if you develop your own loads.
Absurd Moustache Man: "So uhhhh, I don't actually have any REAL experience of this but I was taught something by someone who wasn't actually qualified and then I unofficially claim to have used a long range weapon that I wasn't trained to use so therefore flat earth". Uh huh.
Hi Bob,
Cleary is waving his "spatula" at you , looking forward to his re- education hehehe.
Good. I actually appreciate the effort he put into that video. All his bluster aside he did manage to do some decent science. I’ll address when I take down pea brain
As a fellow pilot, well done!
I love this channel, clearly I subscribe to all the others aswell but I really love this one. It's just so point blank, keep the videos coming.
"basically a bazooka man"
so many memes start like this
Very informative! Well put together. I believe variation adds together rather than subtracts, "11:15 Within the accuracy the rifle". Coriolis, in this example, almost doubles the error of the gun at that distance. Well, technically it shifts it. Not a difficult adjustment, but I would still compensate for it nonetheless vs just ignore it.
Not sure what the deal is between you and the weirdo from the beginning. But that's none of my business. I hope you guys worked that out though. Lots of anger and discontent scattered around UA-cam on this subject. Peace brotha!
Bloody hell while I am still a European I wish to say that chap did not point at Europe right there...
Thanks for this video. Physics is fun and interesting and worth understanding.
Great presentation as always
That waving dude at the end looks creepy though
The Eötvös effect is only noticeable when rockets go horizontal instead of straight up. That is why we never see rockets going all the way into space.
I had a video yesterday of a rocket going all the way to space.
If you're correct, then SpaceX is wondering how the resupply capsules go UP with food and equipment, and COME BACK with garbage and broken equipment. Martians?
@@BTFOOMNY The equipment probably garbage going up, broken coming down.
The Coriolis effect is not supposed to have any tropical storms in the equator, and storms in the Southern hemisphere are always going clockwise, right? Why didn't this happen in 2001 with the Southern hemisphere Tropical Storm Vamei, which traveled through the equator, and was going counterclockwise? Naval Postgraduate School, in Monterey, CA did a tiny paper on it and said that other oceanic forces prevailed, such as the narrowing of the South China Sea, temperatures, and winds. So even with our small 60 year recorded history of these storms, the Coriolis effect doesn't seem to hold true all the time. Other oceanic factors seem more important.
Ura Lier and quite frankly do you think a single tropical storm which did something unexpected invalidates the effect? Well your next step is to come up with a theory that covers this storm AND all other storms better than Coriolis. Until then we have a pretty good mechanism
@@BobtheScienceGuy My guess would be momentum. I cannot see winds change direction by 200 mph (100 mph counterclockwise to 100 mph clockwise) in a mile, or two, simply because it crossed some imaginary line. Not a physics major, but know just enough to keep me from believing the earth is flat, and gravity is fact.
Crystal clear explanation, easy-to-follow maths and some entretainment. Flat Earthers can't ask for more
Pablo del Monte: The mathematics is still way too complex for a flatard to understand. You've to remember, flatards need to take their shoes off to count twenty. Any number greater than that, doesn't exist because they've run out of fingers and toes 🤪.
That dude was a marines? My parents were in the military, he doesn’t have the “feel” of a military service man. Everyone who’s ever been in the military has a specific swagger or exude a specific type of confidence. I would look that dude up for stolen valor.
Great video, Bob. This is how a flat earth debunking video should be. Cold hard facts, working examples and nicely explained with a touch of charisma. Too many other channels quickly descend into incredulity and insults. No flat earther will allow themselves to be convinced of anything whilst they are being insulted.
They won't allow themselves to convinced otherwise period......
Apparently there are some that have come in from the cold! I think videos like the ones Bob does are the best way to make them turn their backs on the nonsense.
I bet 100 usd that that guy in the video isnt a vet. I showed that to my dad and he almost collapsed laughing.
Mr. Bob, interesting video and prop marine.
When I was stationed in Aberdeen Maryland Proving Grounds in a small Marine Detachment in said Army Base, the military rivalry was hot and heavy just like it was in the Nam where those Marines that failed the top secret ballistics school on canon trajectories would get shipped straight to Danang airport and be reassigned in that hellhole to some hot LZ.
Watching your video, which I liked but not loved, gave me flashbacks of over 55 years ago when I went into the head (boys room back then; when foxholes were round and not oval like today) to take a piss and with the hot rivalry between army dogs and marine jarheads, I wasn’t going to stick around to respond to the usual army dog slurs on marines mainly because I was far outnumbered. After taking a healthy piss from drinking the Pabst Blue Ribbon beer for 25 cents out of the beer machine, an army dog asks me loudly: Hey! Don’t you Marines wash your hands after taking a piss?
The air went quiet as the group of army dogs awaited for my response, and I answered:
IN THE MARINE CORP THEY TEACH US NOT TO PISS ON OUR HANDS! And I booked out of there, but could hear some boots behind me and a roar of laughter from the majority group of the Army dogs all crowded together like bitches going to powder their noses and put on their makeup, but I guess that’s common practice now that you get high heels and lipstick in your C-rations (MR. Es, or whatever they’re called now). Upon exiting the bathroom door I halted and swung around to punch the first army dog square in the nose and blood exploded from his face, it was the army dog that asked me the question loudly in front of his buddies. I then swung around again and booked into the forest in my natural environment. A few minutes later, Marines were front and center in front of the Marine barracks with an Army dog with face all bandaged up trying to identify the Marine that hit him with a “club”, or “sap”. It was my fist only and I was scared shitless. I still hadn’t turned 18 years of age and I was the smallest kid in that bathroom. It reminded me of junior high (middle) school when entering into a white bathroom only and I am very far from being an albino.
A few minutes later, MPs and Provost Marshal closed the bar and thirty marines stood front and center for a long time until they gave up the perpetrator (still hiding in the forest). By the way, back then, those Marines would’ve given me up in a flash. The only Marine brothers are made in combat.
Looks like A.I. might have messed up my text, but either way, back to the Coriolis Effect and the curvature of the Earth that said effects are perpendicular (90 degrees) to each other and thus combined effects use trigonometric functions to calculate the total effect from each; excluding the plethora of other known and yet unknown variables.
I wish I had your technical prowess in making videos, but since I don’t, I can only request for you, if so kindly you put up the equations involved with the two variables discussed.
For example, put your map of the Earth, but only the northern hemisphere, and at 45 degree latitude, mean sea level, 59 degree Fahrenheit, 50% relative humidity, and 29.92 inches of mercury with zero wind shoot out to 1,000 yards at an azimuth of zero degrees, and thereafter, shoot same distance but increment the azimuth by 1 degree until you go all around a circle firing 359 shots then plot on a graph the deflections both vertically and horizontally then make your video claim and explain why the graph is lying.
Do not shoot 360 rounds because zero is a number; similar to binary math where an 8-bit counter has 256, but only 255 steps because the zeroth step (the floor) is a number.
I liked your video and will follow, but I don’t totally agree, and I’ve been wrong three times in my life, I’m on my fourth marriage.
Thank you for the great video and for the flash from the past.
And don’t thank me for my service because I didn’t serve, I sacrificed too many friends that took care of me and I looked up to them and I had to tag and bag them in forty pound body bags to send what ever pieces were recoverable back home at an age that I was too young to smoke and drink alcoholic beverages, but were accessible on base with no proof of Identification. Voting? Had to be 21 back then.
FJB Out!
