This is one of the best science videos I've seen. Clear, well presented, and fun. I came here from a page explaining why the sun's equator spins faster than its poles.
Partially agree : if you only care about projectiles, it's okay. But to comprehend the effect fully, the practical experiment here is utterly misleading, it doesn't explain vortex. Even the plane flying north across USA is compared to a projectile like if the air (weather conditions) could be ignored, you can't fly a plane for real and obtain the proposed result 100%, not a good analogy IMO. Not everything is a bullet many times denser than air, and projectile drift due to Earth rotation isn't as dramatic as that tennis ball relative trajectory. You can actually observe the effect with various water drainage device, then go bigger and bigger til the scale of a hurricane across dozen of states, only then you'll understand why the atmosphere seems to get stick to the Earth while being subject to the effect, the human eye doesn't just see it right away, it takes hours to unfold. In this kind of experiments, you must use one or more of three tricks to demonstrate the effect : - speed : go fast enough to reach great distances in order for the human brain to compute observations before loosing track. - scale : reduce the area/volume of experimentation to make things observable - focus : on one observation at a time to ease understanding of each concern. The experiment here reduced the scale of Earth to a mere park playground, and only focused on the kinetic part of a projectile. That's only 5% of everything at play in the Coriolis effect..... I'm afraid most people will only remember the parabolic trajectory of something thrown, then will babble something alike to try to explain vortex in their closet and storms.... very incomplete grasp of the phenomenon.

Thank you very much for this great work and video. The Coriolis effect is also a wonderful analogy for Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. When the speed of the rotating reference frame changes, meaning the Coriolis field changes, a rotational gravity appears around the platform, similar to the electric field induced by the change in magnetic field density, which is a principle of electric generators.
AA 516: Thank you for the great video. The video reference in both the rotating and non-rotating frames definitely helped to reveal the conversion of trajectories between frames. Some videos or demonstrations only show one reference frame, such as the rotating and just denote a Coriolis force that acts in the reference frame and causes trajectory deflection, but that doesn't provide much intuition on the connection between trajectories in different frames as this video did.

the direction of deflection depending on where you're aiming. you're assuming the on the northern hemisphere you're aiming south to north, and on the southern hemisphere you're aiming north to south. but each direction will yield a different result, west and east actually changing the apparent "height" of the projectile
I have a great example of a practical use for the Coriolis Effect. I am a measurement technician. Industry uses Coriolis Mass Flow meters for metering fluid. These meters use this principle to measure water, oil, gas or any other fluid by weight. (Mass) They are some of the most accurate and dependable meters that I have worked with.
Enjoyed your video but had a few questions? Isn't the earth and the air above it rotating in lockstep? And if so, wouldn't this make the merry go round demonstration not comparable to the spinning earth. For example, when you lifted the drone and hovered it over the merry go round, it never drifted away because of the earth's rotation, but if you lifted the drone off a railroad boxcar traveling at 30 mph, it would not land back in the same place. To equate the merry go round Coriolis to what happens on earth, wouldn't all the conditions have to be the same? The air above the merry go round is not rotating in lockstep with the rotating platform.
Coriolis effect says it all in Atmospheric Meteorology, Geology, Physics, and a few thousand other phenomenon. I have used Coriolis in all of my Weather Observations and attempts at predicting entire seasons. And for this qtr of the year, in the northern hemisphere, it will be colder than it was in summer, with likely snow events all over America again.
The frame at 7:05 nails it. All motions, for all directions in the CCW rotating frame, appear to bend to the right. The balls paths are not really curving but appear to curve. Now imagine any pendulum swinging in any plane in the Northern hemisphere. Every swing, although actually straight and true, will appear to curve to the right. There's your Foucault Pendulum!
Young man excellent presentation excellent preparation to teach a Coriolis effect. This video is a bit older and maybe you’re not even checking comments anymore but if so, just wanted to point out excellent job. I’m familiar with the Coriolis effect but only about a year and just started looking into it so there’s gonna be people all the time they’re gonna wanna know a little bit more. again thank you.

AE 512 spring 2024: Awesome video! Really all your videos are great. This video in particular helps adjust our intuition when solving these problems. It'd be interesting to see the paths of the objects if the merry-go-round was accelerating, but I'm guessing this may be too much for the participants.
AA516: Forgot to comment on this when I watched it the first time but the demonstration of the coriolis effects really helped me understand beyond just the concept on what is physically occuring
What an amazing effort to explain this simply. I sort of remember omega cross omega cross r from engineering class...but never really thought about this being a perceived force.
I think it's a demonstration that will actually mislead more people to misunderstand the effect, based on the visual representations and the wording. It is represented in a manner that is showing trajectories shifting. Although it does note that the point of reference is what changes the appearance, but Coriolis isn't about point of reference. There is no trajectory that is curving left or right(horizontal axis). There is a straight line trajectory with a projected termination point that is in motion. In the case of the shooter correcting for Coriolis effect it isn't aim to the left in the Northern and right in the Southern hemispheres. It is correct based on the direction you are aiming. If you are in the Northern hemisphere shooting North to South and correct to left you will miss even further to the left, South to North if you correct left the target will travel into the projectiles path. This is because the projectiles do not curve (on the horizontal axis), as is stated in the video, but the rotation of the planet has the target in constant motion.
AE512 This was a great way to get my feet wet into the Coriolis effect and what will be a more in-depth dive in the next video. It was great to have the different angles from top down as well as on the merry go round as well.
Excellent discourse. Don't know if you had considered it, and maybe you did it and I missed it, but I would love to see you offer an analysis of how this would affect artificial gravity in a rotating space station.
Excellent ! I am really very happy to see it because it was well explained. I need one more clarification. The photograph taken by satellite for showing Coriolis effect on earth, I assume satellite must rotating with same angular velocity as of earth to record the phenomena. If satellite is stationary then it will record that molecules are moving in just straight line. Please help me to understand it. Am i right ?
AA516: Not only was this a great demonstration, but I grew up on this playground so it blows my mind to be learning physics with the same merry-go-round I used to play on as a kid! I am also curious as to how you were able to sync the rotation of the drone with the merry-go-round. Is there some type of feature on the drone to do that? Thank you for a great video!
an object moving in a straight line in the air (inertial reference frame)seems to deviate when viewed from the non inertial reference frame (spinning platform) pretty easy !
Does this mean that if you are competing with bow and arrow, you need to compensate for coreolis effect if you shooting north to south and vice versa. And if you shoot east to west and vise versa you shouldn’t need to compensate? Please i need a answer…

Fascinating. And your set-up at the beginning with a fixed and a moving frame of reference touched in the principles of Relativity. Einstein would have been impressed. Have you thought of a lecture on General and Special Relativity? I’m sure you would make it very understandable.
Then it also mean that if i target shoot from east to west the bullet hit the target faster than if i shout from west to east? Micro time of course but still?
Nice, I see you're getting ahead of the game. If you want to proceed faster keep in mind that while we'll mostly be following the FlightMech series, we'll have occasional modules that are in other areas such as Matlab, Optimization, etc.
What I got out of this is that you calculate how long your projectile will take to reach the target, then you calculate how far the target will have moved during that time, and you aim that far ahead.

Some videos or demonstrations only show one reference frame, such as the rotating and just denote a Coriolis force that acts in the reference frame and causes trajectory deflection, but that doesn't provide much intuition on the connection between trajectories in different frames as this video did.
Finally a good video on the coriolis effect!
How could I have missed this amazing channel!! Love from Sweden 💛💙

AE512: Watching you have fun with this demonstration made the topic infinitely more interesting, I suddenly want to go find a merry go round near me.
This was fun. Enjoyed it bunches. Give us more like this, PLEASE!
🥺
🙏
AE512: love the hands on demonstration with props!
This is the best video I've seen on gaining an intuition for the Coriolis effect! Thank you!
Oh my god, this is the best channel, you just cleared my doubts
Doubts about what?
the direction of deflection depending on where you're aiming. you're assuming the on the northern hemisphere you're aiming south to north, and on the southern hemisphere you're aiming north to south. but each direction will yield a different result, west and east actually changing the apparent "height" of the projectile
Jason-AE512: I can't imagine lecture video can be this insteresting and detailed.
AE 512: Great explaniation. as always, appreciate the effort put into these videos.
[AA 516] Really helpful demonstration of why rotating frames affect vectors, I liked the arrow overlay demonstrating how the "curved" path occurs.
Will, thanks for the feedback. Please let me know how things go as the quarter progresses!
AA516: Experiments using marry-go-around clearly showed how the Coriolis effect works in real. It was so helpful and fun!
AE512 Those slow motion captures with arrows really helped my understanding!
I love this visual demo. Thank you so much!!! It helps a lot for my physics course.
I have a great example of a practical use for the Coriolis Effect.
I am a measurement technician. Industry uses Coriolis Mass Flow meters for metering fluid.
These meters use this principle to measure water, oil, gas or any other fluid by weight. (Mass)
They are some of the most accurate and dependable meters that I have worked with.
AA 516: It was a very good explanation, especially the weather section.
Those analogies are busting me up!
Jacob, thanks for watching, we'll keep the analogies coming in the future videos, standby...
AE 512 Great example of the Coriolis Effect.
Really awesome demo! Also I'd like to see more Gus in future videos because he is a good boy

Thank you, Christopher Lum. Good explanation of the Coriolis Effect.
AA 516: Great explanation and demo of the Coriolis Effect!
AE 512 spring 2024: Awesome video! Really all your videos are great. This video in particular helps adjust our intuition when solving these problems. It'd be interesting to see the paths of the objects if the merry-go-round was accelerating, but I'm guessing this may be too much for the participants.

The visual captured here is extremely helpful in understanding Coriolis
AA516: Forgot to comment on this when I watched it the first time but the demonstration of the coriolis effects really helped me understand beyond just the concept on what is physically occuring
What an amazing effort to explain this simply. I sort of remember omega cross omega cross r from engineering class...but never really thought about this being a perceived force.
My thanks! Wonderful, thorough work!
Within a half minute I new this channel was pure science meat.
After I watched I was satiated with my updated understanding. Thanks.
ps I subscribed
Pretty good, well done 👏🏼
AA 516 Very innovative Explanation !!
Great video. At 11:20, that's Wisconsin, not Michigan. HTH.
Excellent video.
@8:25 Vacuums doesn't "suck". Three air molecules will not be "pulled" into a low pressure system. Words do matter for understanding.
Trust me bro ,I'm a master's student but I sucked at understanding at deep level andmu did it, damn ur the best
love you for your effect ....its called lum effect
brother, can i use your method to teach my students?
AE 512
Very cool to see real life examples that match up with theory.
They did it manually. If you pay attentiom its not perfect
@@stevekal2303you replied to a bot
@@User-jr7vf are you sure about that?
@@stevekal2303 look at the pattern. Very suspicious.
@@User-jr7vf look at what pattern? I think your a bot.
an object moving in a straight line in the air (inertial reference frame)seems to deviate when viewed from the non inertial reference frame (spinning platform) pretty easy !
Counter clockwise, what are we counting? complete rotations ?
If someone was shooting a rifle would the Coriolis effect change the trajectory of the bullet?
Fistful of Dramamine for Brian!
Really great explanation! Thank you so much! :)
Does this mean that if you are competing with bow and arrow, you need to compensate for coreolis effect if you shooting north to south and vice versa. And if you shoot east to west and vise versa you shouldn’t need to compensate? Please i need a answer…
AA516: Brian has good aim!!
Excellent explanation and work
Fernando, thank for the kind words and for watching, I hope it was helpful!
AE512: This definitely helps clear up some of the unintuitiveness surrounding Coriolis effects.
AE 512: This was great to reference while watching the next lecture to see what the math was doing.
Do snipers need to adjust for the Coriolis effect?
No. They don't.
Depends on the shot
AE512: Very enjoyable to learn and entertaining along with your video. :)
Great explanation!!!!
Thanks a lot for your kindly help to make me understand the unbelievable force with best wish to you.

Fascinating. And your set-up at the beginning with a fixed and a moving frame of reference touched in the principles of Relativity. Einstein would have been impressed. Have you thought of a lecture on General and Special Relativity? I’m sure you would make it very understandable.
😂 the jerk Einstein,
i really enjoyed this video.
AA516 It is very good demo, it would be good to have a view on the top without rotation. Po
Damn. That was interesting! Thank you!
awesome video !
Family sitting in the background waiting for these grown ups to finish blocking the merry-go-round...
How about in spherical trigonometry? Quaternions?
🥳🥳🥳i got it....not only coriolis but also how low and high tornadoes are forms 🤩🤩🤩
Then it also mean that if i target shoot from east to west the bullet hit the target faster than if i shout from west to east? Micro time of course but still?
Excellent work kids... excellent.
AA 516: Fun demonstration!
