Many of them don´t see a contradiction in raising a pig for 1-2 years, lovingly taking care of it and acknowledging it as a friendly animal that's almost a pet to them, before butchering it and serving it for christmas, for instance.

Chris: (comes in holding a shotgun) "So do you want me to take it out back?" Brian: "No. You'll never take me alive." Brian takes Stewie hostage.
