    Make sure the gear selector is hooked into the correct position when putting back together.

    I think it would be wise to tell everybody the size of nut or bolt that is being used on this lower unit so you know what size socket or ranch to use.

    Removing is easy. Lining up the splines when you re attach is always a pain. Techniques how to put it back on would be helpful.

      It better be in forward or you get 🤬. Even then that damned little shoe on the drive needs some help lining upon mine sometimes. Having a rolling work jig is much faster than lifting from in your lap. Of course I still use that 😡 method like a fool for last 23 years and I discover I’m net getting any younger.

    Thanks for the video and sharing your experience however; your camera movement is choppy and probably should use a tripod for most of it and hand held for detailed view. Also, you tend to talk a lot and slow causing it to take longer.

    I could use your advice. I have taken apart my lower and the bolt with the star washer on the rear (under the anode fin) snapped. The bolts holding on the lower were very corroded with calcium. Any tricks to get the bolt out? Do I really need it when reassembled?? I have a merc 3.0. I tried to drill it and am not having any luck getting it to back out.
    Can I drill the whole thing out fill with marine jb weld and drill, or any advice? I am hoping my upper case where the bolt is stuck is not trash now.
    I use your videos for all my servicing!! Thanks in advance.

    Would a leak at the quad seal cause oil to leak from the weep hole at the bottom of the lower unit? Also, would a lack of water flow through the exhaust ports nearest the transom indicate a closed thermostat or a faulty impeller? Thank you a great video!

      Ik this is 4 years late, but would you happen to remember what fixed that issue? Cause that is current issue I am experiencing

    • @bigsqueezy661
      @bigsqueezy661 2 роки тому

      @@patrickharlow7724 in my case the impeller was worn and not pushing water through the water jackets in the exhaust manifold. I also had a torn seal which contributed to the oil leak out of the weep hole.

    HI, thanks for the vid. I ruined my lower unit. How to I tell what lower unit I have. Boat is a 97 bayliner with 4.3 vortec. Says alpha one but not sure if its a gen 1 or 2. Looking at your website I think its a Gen 2. I'm looking for one on ebay.

    14:30 mark in the video shift housing. I replaced my housing and noticed there is a little play in the rod moving up and down. Is this normal? It seems like my gear doesn't go far enough up into the upper housing. And help is appreciated.

    Thanks for all your videos! I noticed oil on the shaft when you separated the lower. Is that normal? Or is the upper seal leaking or something. Mine is doing it and I feel like I need to rebuild the upper... I would appreciate your input. Thanks again!

      These drives have the vertical drive shaft and impeller housing immersed in oil. That's why you have to drain them first of all. But you get a little residual oil as you noticed but it's normal.

    Should the trim be down when you start this job or does it not matter

      Down.. then take the trim cylinders loose...that is if your taking off the complete sterndrive

    Do you have a video on replacing upper drive seals on a 1998 Gen2? Our's is leaking drive oil through a weap hole between upper and lower unit and although I've been told this is a normal venting area after filling the reservoir and taking the boat out it is again below the ad line on one outing....your thoughts? Seems like excessive leakage to me and can't be normal?

  • @KingTurtle23

    I sure do appreciate you sir. I was missing that ⁹/¹⁶ bolt and couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Is it normal for water to be in the oil? It also looks like its had the entire insides rebuilt as far as water pump and seals.

    • @davidjessee7701
      @davidjessee7701 2 роки тому +1

      It is not normal to have water in the gearcase.. a common place for water to enter the gearcase it when fishing line gathers infront of the prop and gets in the prop shaft seal... its very important to take of the prop and the thrush washer to make sure you don't have fishing line wrapped around the shaft..

      I appricate the knowledge man. I've already given it back to my uncle and he's getting get it done for me though. Will be here for the next guy that has the same questions.

      Water in the gear oil is really bad news because it'll sit below the oil meaning those highly stressed drive gears will eventually be running in water or emulsified thinned oil causing rust and wear. Also why it's a good idea to change the oil end of the season to avoid the risk of freezing of any water which could crack the gear case.
