Day 1 and 2 of the bassmaster open here on the James river a couple weeks ago. Had a great time, learned a ton and caught some fish! Do you guys think I should make a run at fishing these bigger events as a boater in the future? Let me know down below.

Everyone should aim to be like Steve that man fishing bassmaster classic like it's just another fishing with his buddy. The other guy definitely was putting himself in a position to catch fish and not you but Steve was all about sharing, offering to help with every fish , super cool dude
People used to give me crap for finishing near bottom àt some Superbike races. I just asked them where did they finish? You fished in a bassmaster event. That's pretty cool!!!
Im not good enough to be fishing tournaments but I like watching the tournament videos. Good job you caught a limit in a bassmaster open thats pretty awesome.
First day was hard one to watch, appreciated the honesty.
The learning curve can really slap you in the face sometimes. The next one will be an amazing success.
Trash 🗑
That guy on day 2 took good care of you. Seemed way kinder.
Also, what boots are those things you and everyone else is wearing now? 😅
xtratufs for the win (thanks lawson lindsey)
@@SBFishing Fucking salty guys, making life easier for us all.
@@jacenchrisbaker lol us salty guys love our xtratuf boots, they’re made to repel fish blood and oils and saltwater so y’all freshwater guys get a long time outta yours. My last pair only lasted for a year after fishing almost everyday last year in my kayak and on boats.
Steve really is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. You got a great draw getting to fish with him.
I haven't stopped talking about fishing with Steve since I stepped off his boat. Truly a class act, one of the nicest guys I've met and honestly just had an awesome day fishing with him.
Congrats on making it this far Man!! That's a dream for some people just qualifying
You literally know nothing about tournaments. You don't have to qualify for a bass master open you literally pay the entry fee and your in. 🙄 Idiots think they know everything because they have the internet
Dudes a co angler you pay some money and they put you in another guys boat.
Looks like you got backboated on day 1, good job coming back on the second day
You're fishing in the big leagues now. You've come a long way from when I started watching you do most of your fishing from shore. Keep going.
Despite not catching the fish you wanted I appreciate you bringing us along for the ride and keeping it real. I feel like you’re one of the few bass guys on YT that doesn’t just pump out clickbait videos or try to make a bad day on the water seem good or anything. The honesty is refreshing and determination inspiring, go get them next time!
I'm such a big fan of yours man. Your attitude stays so even and light, it's super refreshing to see.
Came back to watch some river fishing videos, man this whole video was great. Steve “boater 2” was great and you were working the back of the boat like a pro. That boat looks huge on GoPro too 😂
Super interesting !
My Anticipation is constant for these tournaments !
Cool! my next local kayak tourney is partnered with BASS, very excited!
Dude on day 1 looked like he was angling the boat to prevent you from being able to cast at anything...
Atta boy! Way to bounce back after a rough day 1! Killed it on day 2 homie! 👊🏻
You can’t always control the outcome, but you can control taking the risk and giving it a try. That will put you ahead of most. Loved the video and hope you do some more.
Great bounce back. After seeing some of your angles on the first day, no surprise you almost got skunked. Thanks for the vid, man.
i bet that feels awsome bassmaster is huge
really encouraged to watch you fish this tournament. i think you did awesome considering it was you first foray into tournament bass fishing. really fun to hear the banter between you and the primary anglers.. please keep fishing these tournaments, i believe you could have a really good chance at advancing if you weren't back boated by your partners and it seems like you didn't have that problem. as i said they both seemed to be stand up guys. keep fishing my friend.
Great video. I'm learning the James and chik. Definitely not tournament ready, but this gives me hope
I'm a local here. Would love to jump out on the James with ya and learn some things. I personally prefer the chik lake. But have fished many tourneys on the river. Keep chasing it my friend. Watch all your videos.
Hey Matt, I enjoyed watching the video. Proud of you for taking the shot.
Awesome video. Love seeing the process even if it didn’t go to plan. You did it, and saw it through till the end, which is the first major step. I hope you keep doing these, love the content.
You were in the race and that in itself was a Learning experience. Now is the time to get on . Get back to doing what you did a couple of years ago and have fun. When you have fun we have fun . Get your old buddy from the 50 state trip and rejoin him as you two were a fantastic team . You don’t need Pro Bass tournaments. Just be yourself .
Man, I love fishing the chickahominy river and James river for bass. Great place to catch big bass !
Really good stuff. Gonna be fun to watch the Open journey
That's awesome Matt that you got to fish the tournament that you wanted to. Hopefully you will keep going and maybe one day I'll get to meet you at one . Awesome video bro
Congrats man. Be proud of yourself, good accomplishment to even be apart of a BASS open! Love to see you do more! If your ever back in Ohio around salt fork area let me know, love to fish with you brother!!
Talk about getting back boated by the first guy! I guess that’s tournament though
Loved seeing that spinning rod in your hand more the second day, that's the deal out of the back of the boat. Great job Matt.
Definitely a mistake I made on day 1 was not fishing the dropshot/ned enough.
@@SBFishing na blame it on the captain for not finding that clearer water! Your a beast, keep it up. Love your tournament vids
Hope you still had a good time. Enjoyed watching it man.
Thumbs up for even stepping into the coangler ... been watching videos about it and it seems tough. Keep at it!!!
Glad you had a good time, it looked fun. Looking forward to seeing more tourneys.
Good work, man. Honestly...even just BEING THERE and competing puts you on a level beyond 99.99% of bass fishermen.
Loving the videos, taking your advice for my high school fishing team starting in the fall!! Thank you for the great content!! 🎣
I haven't fished the Chick in some years. Would love to get back there!
Looking forward to seeing your next one! Love your positive outlook!
Nice bro! Good to see you out there grinding. Keep putting in that work and it’ll pay off🤙🏻
Hey man, I fished a creek on the James that week on Saturday. I was kayak fishing and I’ll tell you what, I did pretty good up in the creek a ways. I know you’re at the mercy of the boater so that’s tough. Enjoyed the vid!
love your vibes bro always having a great time
I feel your pain.. I fish BFL Phoenix Big5 Cowboy Division (Texas) as a boater came in 32nd place out of 277....but then I zeroed the next day... Such a roller coaster ride but DAMN it's fun!! So proud of you man .... ^5 !!! Rock their socks in the next one !!!
So cool! Would love to here a few of those tips you learned. Good luck on the next tournament, can’t wait to see the video.
Fishing as a co angler is rough. Great job Matt and keep your head up.
You should definitely do it again! I really enjoyed the video!
Me too. Was waiting on it
Would love to see some more open video for sure
Definitely gonna try!!
Good for you! Keep grinding Matt you’re gonna get there. Love the videos!
Gambler boater baby! Go in it vintage style!!! Good second day!
wow amazing fishing, new friend from asia watching you, stay tune
As someone who co anglers a lot, I felt the pain of trying to stay cool, collective and supportive (referring to day 1). As a second line in the water, you only think of how not to get in the way, catch biggins and contribute what you can. It goes a long way when your captain considers your view and puts you on or at least gives you the chance to. As a captain, I know the pain all too well so I’m always making sure we have even grounds covering water.
Awesome video man, can't wait to see more tournaments
i enjoy your channel very much and really like that u r a local to me i fish the Potomac river mostly mattawomen creek and enjoy ur vidz but i really like the tournament vidz teally enjoyed this video and would really like to see u do this sometime as an angler in ur boat i know u mentioned it at the end of the vid i think it would b cool to see.
You guys put in at Osbourne landing? That's a haul to the Chic from just east of Richmond. I thought the tournaments usually went out of Hopewell?
Good to see you culling in a Bassmaster tourny. Better luck next time.
The first guy nosed the piss out of you so you couldn't make catchable cast. Catching one while the guy was jacking with the light was awesome. I've been a sub since 8K you're my go to fishing youtuber. Keep up the good work.
Yes! More tournaments! Love the content
You can learn a lot fishing as a non boater upping your game big time quickly. At the same time meeting great people making new friends.. Some people are dam good at fishing tournaments and than some are just good at fishing. To me the two are different.
Glad you were at least able to fish the co angler side
Back of the boat is always tough
wow awesome dude!!!!
Glad you got in even if it’s as a co angler still awesome!
Grind, grind, grind... You got this!
Doesn’t matter how you did. You got out there and can only go up. Good luck on the next one.
I do think that the Chick has bigger fish but dang that's a long ways to run vs the time you could spend fishing in the barge pits or other oxbows or creeks between there ......but lotta money won on the Chick so I guess I can't argue too much.
Keep grinding! Name of the game!
Second day did you put your big fish on the boater side lol 😂 love it
dang talk about being back boated, too bad steve couldnt land a fish in the front of that 20 foot boat
Good effort man. Keep it up.
great fishing as always, i remember a while back you talked about some people trying to get lake M reopened to the public and news on that? What can people who are local do to help?
Awesome vid SB!!! 👊👊👊
The james and chick has always been good to me
Glad you had some good redemption on your 2nd day man!!
Matt, that was pretty good ... I really liked it. Great that you had a good time too. Oh, and I bet you learned a lot for sure! My, if you didn't pick his brain and soak up what he offered ---- oh, then my friend - you missed! Always lookin' forward to the next. Be Safe
Any way you can go into detail about your Ned rig setup with the baitcaster?
Great video and great experience!
Not bad better luck next but what an experience you had though. 👋👊🎣🏆
My boy made it in!!!!
Also how did that caymas ride? Heard they are super comfortable.
Always up in the air I'd assume fishing as a co angler. Takes some balls.
How was fishing out of the Caymas vs the Skeeter?
Both were extremely nice boats and I'd be happy with either. Steve's Caymas was literally brand new, boat is laid out perfectly and I'm a huge fan.
Living the dream... 👍
Is that the NRS Bib? I have the same one, I love it.
Not NRS, but Gill! Huge fan, they’re really comfortable, super water proof and lightweight. They are 100% nylon so they don’t get way too hot to wear when you’re fishing through late spring/summer rain but have enough room to layer up underneath when it’s cold. Check them out!
www.gillfishing.com/tournament-pro-3l-bib/
Looks freezing!
Nice job on the limit as a co angler brotha
Tale of Two Tourney Days!
Nice!!!! I see you are from Va. too i just SUBSCRIBEd!
Ned is good but try shakey heading spotremover 6 inch yumdinger greenpumpkin neon. 11am to 4pm.
I'm from Canada so I'm unsure of how this worked. were you in the tournament but as someone who tags along with another angler? Are you able to make calls on spots are at the mercy of the other fisherman? Also wouldn't the other fisherman be worried that you might land a big one taking away a fish they might catch? love the content!!
You nailed it on the head. Boaters fish against boaters, and co anglers fish against coanglers. There is no incentive to having a coangler in your boat as a pro, and it's up to them if they let you make any calls. I assume that yes - the fact the guy in the back could catch one of their fish is always in the back of their minds, but it's just the way it goes!
VERY NICE
Good Job!!!!
Give us that Jon Boat Touny Vid!
Way to grind out day one and put a good limit together on day 2.
this is what i like to see
Nice job!!
Did you stay in the chickahominy the whole day on day 1 ?
What happened to TH-1 Marine don’t you have to do that and then come up?
The chic can be a difficult place to fish! I know folks that lived on it have troubles with consistency
I didnt know bass masters elite series did team competitions?
I thought the boater was his teammate until he went to weigh in and only weighed his one fish. Is the boater just another person in the tournament? They do that to reduce amount of boats in the water, or how does that work?
Do you not use nets in these tournaments?
