How to remove a broken dowel

  • In this video we can watch a simple woodworking trick about how to remove a broken dowel. We usuallt try how the pieces fit before we glue them, and when we use dowels sometimes they break when we dismantle the pieces. With pliers and with one screw it is very easy to remove the broken dowels if the pieces are inside the holes.

    Hey Sergio, great tip! If the dowel still proves to be stubborn try a heat gun to loosen the glue a little. Keep up the great work!

    • @billfromelma
      @billfromelma 8 років тому +1

      hummmm I'm not sure. I know heat will loosen hide glue and may work on this glue too, alls I can say is give it a try on a scrap when you get a chance.

    • @raphaelbianchi
      @raphaelbianchi 8 років тому +3

      As far as i know, most glues melt with heat.
      Had an ideia, what if you insert the screw and then heat the screw touching it with a solder iron? It would heat exactly the area that needs to be heated.

    Hello Sergio and thank you for your smart videos!
    My suggestion is that you first drill a tiny hole into the dowel, in order to avoid the dowel to become expanded.

    I misplaced my dowels THREE times! Before I watched this video I used pliars with no screw on one dowel and it broke off, which is worse than splitting. For that one I hammered the rest of the dowel all the way in and used the screw as a chisel until it fell out in pieces. That improvisation took 20 minutes and was not fun. THIS method here is MUCH better.

    Sergio, do you accept video suggestions? You'll probably have a solution to my problem and i think it would be a great video.
    I make eletric guitars and, as far as i don't have the proper tools, i have problems to make the wood perfectly flat to glue it side to side. So, the suggestion for a video is ways to make the wood perfectly flat.

    • @raphaelbianchi
      @raphaelbianchi 8 років тому

      Yes, i didn't know the best way to express that in english.
      I think it was the first video of yours that i watched. But do you think it works great for long pieces of wood?
      i'm going to do the same you did to the plane to a hand belt sander.
