Can't Find The Time To Tell You Compilation

- This is a compilation of 3 wonderful renditions of a beautiful song. I mis-labeled the video. The correct title is Can't Find The Time. It was originally done by a Boston area group, Orpheus. Originally released in 1968 the song became a brief and modest hit. It almost fell into oblivion but for the cultish few who truly appreciated the beautiful tune for its main strength, its lyrics. My wife (then girlfriend) Janice and I became acquainted with the song when a group known as The Exceptions used it in their routine. They were a local club band that performed in the Philly suburbs and down the Jersey shore. In 1971 another virtually unknown group Rose Colored Glass covered the song again with only limited success. In 2000 Hootie and The Blowfish performed the song for the soundtrack of I, Myself and Irene. My recollection is that the song was much better than the movie. The wonderful lyrics; so many things to say I could fit it in a book of a thousand pages, I look at your pretty face and I fall in love with you every time I see you, nightgowns of regal lace. Perhaps after listening to this wonderful compilation your should "Find The Time," to tell the one you love how much you do. I am sure Orpheus wouldn't mind if you borrowed a few of their lyrics.
(Ba, da-da-da da da da) I can't find the time to tell you
(Ba, da-da-da da da da) I can't find the time to tell you
So many things to say,
I could fit 'em in a book, fit 'em in a book
of a thousand pages, yeah
So many people say,
that I couldn't tell a lie, couldn't tell a lie
in a thousand ages
Baby you're wrong, baby you're wrong
(Ba, da-da-da da da da) I can't find the time to tell you
(Ba, da-da-da da da da) I can't find the time to tell you
I look at your pretty face and I
fall in love with you, fall in love with you
every time I see you, yeah
Nightgowns of regal lace that are,
flowin' to the ground, flowin' to the ground
in a mist, around you
Baby you're wrong...baby you're wrong...baby you're wrong...baby you're wrong!
(Ba, da-da-da da da da) I can't find the time to tell you,
(Ba, da-da-da da da da) I can't find the time to tell you,
(Ba, da-da-da da da da)
(Ba, da-da-da da da da)
(Ba, da-da-da da da da)
(Ba, da-da-da da da da)
Bruce this song will always touch our souls.
I’m 67 and this song still moves me . I never understood how it wasn’t a huge hit other than in the New England area . Disappointed that the original wasn’t used in the movie .
I just listened to all 3 renditions and then this showed up in my feed. Thank you. Such a beautiful song
When I was a boy, my family lived in Philly and I remember hearing this song played. My parents had a lot of friends in the Philly music scene in the late 60's and early 70's. It brings back very fond memories. Thanks for posting it.

I am friends with Bruce Arnold, writer of the song and Jack Mckenes. We played together in the folk days. Nobody has ever done it better! Bruce has reformed Orpheus in California with the original studio rhythm unit, Bernard Purdie (who played with Steely Dan and others) and Joe Macho on bass. Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra have remarked that nobody can sing it like Bruce and they would not attempt. Very glad and proud to have known and played with these guys.
I agree Orpheus sang it best.
was this song really offered to Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra Tony got mad at Columbia records when they wanted him to record Janis Joplin songs and started His own record company IMPROV records the actor playing Frank Sinatra in the made for TV movie was yelling at Mia Farrow turn that garbage off when she played a Yardbirds record
I had only heard the RCG version until a few month ago and while I really do like the Orpheus version, I like RCG the best. Maybe more used to it so Hootie and Orpheus sound good but not better .. thanks for putting all 3 together.
Here's to you Fanny, never felt this wat any other woman
I met Tim who played saxophone with them sometimes he was surprised that i had them in my over 44,000 item collection
To this day I could never understand why the original song by Orpheus was NOT # 1 worldwide. It was only popular in the Boston area, because there was a big push back then of the Bosstown sound with groups like Beacon St. Union and other groups. In New York, AM radio never played it and I heard it on FM radio. Payola may have stopped the pay for play, but to this day, big business in the music industry still controls the success of all recording artists. Orpheus should have been very big!
I grew up in western Ohio and when the sun set and the local radio stations powered down I could pull in the signal of Boston's WBZ, A.M. 103. Deejays Juicie Brucie Bradley and Dick Summer made me a life-long fan of Orpheus. Still have their first 3 albums in my vinyl collection.
Great song...remember it well.
Glad to see nearly 50 years later, it still hits the soul.
it sure does! :)
A Great song that plays OVER AND OVER in my head....
Heard this song once, on way to Sullivan County upstate N.Y. never heard it again till recently, I was back in that car once again, never forgot it, should have been monster hit, I guess record producers were getting high too!. Song defined the best of a wonderful but tough era
Great song, I have never heard this song till early this morning as I was driving, listening to 87.7. I love music! 9/29/16
3 renditions. By far the greatest and biggest hit was Rose Colored Glass from 1971. I love it.
I remember the convertable top down wind blowing her hair nothing like being in Love thank you Orfeus for a musical gem that is forever timeless
I'm surprised to find out this was not a runaway hit when it came out. Great song. Rich Scott, you made my day because of the info you gave above about the song. My memories of playing my 45, hearing the song in record stores, on tv , on elevators (lol) just flashed before my eyes and I smiled. I thank you for posting it.
2004mojo I am really glad you enjoyed it. Orpheus released right around the time I came home from Vietnam. I had other things on my mind at that time but discovered this beautiful song about 10 years later. I am now retired and drive a limo to keep myself busy. Any time I have a bride or even a groom in the car, I MAKE THEM LISTEN to this beautiful love song. I somehow believe that would make Bruce Arnold Orpheus smile.
Thanks for your nice comment but the credit certainly goes to Orpheus. 🎼❤️
WHAT A GREAT SONG --FAV WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL
This was a song I sang in High School -"Can't Find The Time To Tell You",,, great song
1968 was a great year for Orpheus
@PhillySouth
Personally, I've always thought it lacks the power of the RCG cover. That recording is, well, as they say, magical. Just pure magic. Rare to get that.
GREAT SONG FROM THE 70-S great words and cruisin in the summer
MICKEY STEWART one of the greatest love songs OF ALL TIME
WOW! I'm hearing Rose Colored Glass's version of this song for the first time tonight since the early 70s!! THIS is the version that I remember hearing at the beach and throughout the summer of '71. It is clearly pop, but when you listened to AM radio back then, that's what it was. So, between this song and Tommy James and the Shondells 'Crystal Blue Persuasion' jamming the airwaves that summer, both were burned into my 11-year old brain and never left. As much as I appreciate the original from 1968, the remake by RCG is the one that "one of America's GREAT radio stations" in Erie, Pennsylvania blasted the airwaves with. btw - I laughed when I saw the 45 record label marked with 'INTRO : 10' because this told the DJ who was playing the record that he had 10-seconds to 'yap' into the song before the vocals started. In the radio industry, this is called "running it up to the post", which they did a LOT of back then. Anyway, THANK YOU for posting these!
One of the best songs ever
ROSE COLORED GLASS THE BEST FOR HARMONY AND DEPTH
Actually, we performed both "She's Not There" and "Walk Away Rene" live.
Bruce Arnold is there a video of either or both. I can hear in my mind your voice on Rene. Tx super fan! 🎼 ❤️
They're all great versions, but if I had to list them from first to last, it would be Orpheus, then Hootie, and last Rose Colored Glasses
Thank you for your insight. I am sure it will help those who now know this fine music better understand its origins. I agree that the original is by far the best. I also appreciate the professional fashion in which you corrected and criticized my well intentioned description.
How many of you think that the version by Rose Colored Glass sounds like it could be Cornelius Bros. and Sister Rose, or maybe the Friends of Distinction? One could easily mistake it for one of those groups. It kind of also sounds like The 5th Dimension. Anyone agree?
CAN SOMEONE LIST ALL PLAYERS OF THE STUDIO VERSIONS OF THE TWO VERSIONS?
Orpheus's original version of this song was true magic & a glimmer that there was some hope out there in the bleak time that was the late sixties. RCG"S version was two poppy & just plain sucked. The original version was great no matter if you were straight, stoned or tripping. Rsg's version was for vomiting on Boones farm. Hooties lacked the great orchestrations of the original Thanks for sharing. Peace.
I drank Boones Farm a t Woodstock and ate steak Catfish had a song about Boones Farm at the Fillmore
The original (by Orpheus) is still the greatest, as they say! There is another version (unreleased) by Orpheus as a
rehearsal accapella; that would be nice if someone could share it
Try this version by Bruce in 2010

Absolutely!
The Rose Colored Glass cover is about as white bread as you can get. Bruce Arnold's original version with Orpheus had a groove and his inspiration Billy Stewart's 1965 hits "I Do You Love You" and "Sitting In The Park" were even slower. Arnold had soul, which is why the R&B and Lowrider crowd adopted his version and skipped this silly cover.
Right there with you. I'm guessing that fans of the RCG cover from 1971 never heard or didn't remember the Orpheus original. Compared to Orpheus lead vocalist Bruce Arnold RCG sounds shrill and schlocky, like something performed by Up With People at a halftime show.
The Orpheus version heard here must be te original album cut. WABC(Do I have his user name right?) has a video of the 45 rpm and the instrumental break near the end is removed. First time I've heard the full version
Is it baby you're wrong? Doesn't make sense. Baby your right makes much more sense. Or maybe it could be, your eyes? As a song writer myself, Baby your wrong doesn't register....
@cmulwee001 From what I ve been able to figure, the 4 members of that short-lived group were 3 men & a woman; & yes, The could have also been The Seekers, We Five, & Friends of Distinction. All I know is that it's a great, great song, no matter which version! Wolfsky9
What a treat! Thanks much! Are the lyrics supposed to be "Baby, you're wrong" or "Baby, you're mine"? The second one makes more sense to me!
Craig Rigby I think you must concentrate on the lyrics preceding "baby you're wrong." That really establishes the basis for the "wrong" lyric. Try it and see what you think!
Contrary to this video's description, with the exception of Arnold's arrangement of "Don't Be Cruel", (which was only performed before the group was signed to MGM Records), Orpheus did not perform cover tunes live. Their excellent studio versions of "She's Not There" and "Walk Away Renee" were left off their live set list. There are rumors that Arnold and Orpheus had recorded arrangements of Len Barry's "1-2-3" as well as Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" but again, these were not done live.
Thank you for the clarification.. I was misinformed.
GREAT LOVE SONG 1971 BIG HIT SUMMER HEARING WHY CRUISIN..
The answer is on the Wikipedia site - the record manufacture was in financial straits and could not release product. The DJ's would not give playtime to records that their listeners could not buy.
Indeed it was. It is the third rendition on this video.
omg was there a heat wave melting the tape when rose colored glass recorded this. it’s a nice rendition, though. sort of a cross between friends of distinction and fifth dimension.
3:33 RCG
@orpheusreborn
Thank you for the correction. You are obviously more familiar than I . I truly appreciate it.

@bonez5624
Indeed it is the best. The other pale in comparison.
What a treat! Thanks much! Are the lyrics supposed to be "Baby, you're wrong" or "Baby, you're mine"? The second one makes more sense to me!
