Chris Buck is the single most inspirational "new" player I've discovered over the past several years. Not only a charming individual but I don't believe I've ever heard him play a note that didn't make me want to practice more and harder and deeper. Always, always a treat.
So much time for this guy. As a 50 something guitar teacher I can be quite cynical about younger players but Chris is one of those that really has something that cuts through all the ticktock BS. Seems like a genuinely lovely guy and apart from the great musical timing, great comic timing.
Lee - bear with me here. I am 75 in June. Been playin' since I was 13 (1960 folks). Hank was the reason I started. Eric was my inspiration and mentor but... there you are with THE finest guitarist on the planet today - and my new inspiration. Chris Buck! Wonderful to see/hear and listen to him (Friday Fretworks is a MUST!)
Im only 30 been playing since 4 or 5 cant quite remember. Hank was the reason i started and Stevie was my mentor. Absolutely agree 100% chris buck is definitively the best alive today
Bear with you? Are you in Canada? Best advice step back slowly (make sure there's nothing to fall off as you walk back like the edge of a cliff) - TBH if bears are like people they'll probably only eat meat when it's younger so you're probably reasonably safe. Unless it's mating season or you anger the bear by saying you like Eric Clapton (They are all Peter Green fans)
I've often thought that. As well as multiple others I've seen on UA-cam, most of whose names I've forgotten. I think it shows just how much guitar playing has moved on...technically. I see people doing things that nobody had even thought of doing in the 70s....or maybe we just didn't see them! One thing though.....it doesn't mean that the actual music is better now. I wonder if that ship has sailed.
The new Revstar can easily compete with some boutique guitars I own, costing a fraction. I'm totally impressed with what Yamaha has achieved here in build quality.
I agree. I've got a Standard series with P90s and it's stunningly good for the money. Like you say, a fraction of the cost of some of my other guitars. I'd rate it as the best value for money electric I've ever owned.
I recently sold my Gibson Les Paul 1959 60th Anniversary Custom Shop. The weekend after I went to my local guitar shop and tried the black Revstar RSS20T £699 guitar. I genuinely enjoyed the sound and feel of that guitar more than the £5699 Gibson I owned. Litterly 5k less!!! Really tempted to pick one up.
The Revstars are excellent and Chris Buck is an astonishing talent. It’s a pleasure to hear him play but it has to be said that Captain’s Anderton’s rhythm playing behind it was spot on the the money during the opening jam. Really great work all round.
Played one of these today at my local guitar shop - the gold P90 model. What a nice feeling and sounding guitar. I generally don’t like a 24.75” scale too much but this one felt great. I loved the sound of the P90s. This guitar offers a ton of value.
Great fellas! Chris yes, but wow The Captain Lee shows us delicious licks too. Fluid and expression is terrific. I love Yamaha guitars in total. They always make exceptional, easy to play, with sound that is top pro level regardless of price point. I will have one! THANKS!
I bought my RS502T after being inspired by Mr. Buck and his soulful and fluid playing. I even copped a lick or two from his video with Justin Sandercoe. #justinguitar Everyone says that guitar just sounds better than any of my other guitars. I'm picking up a custom T-style later this month, so it will be interesting to see if it still keeps the top spot after the initial 'new guitar' excitement wears off. Regardless, it's great to see Chris and #CardinalBlack getting the recognition they deserve. Congratulations the new addition to your family. As a father of 3, all of whom are adults now, I can tell you it only gets better.
He’s great. I love his playing, but I’ve yet to hear him display the range of improvised ideas of,say, Robben Ford. His ideas in the final jam were kinda limited to my ears. Early days yet for CB I think.
Chris Buck IS truly inspirational, it’s interesting to watch his unique style and phrasing creep into other great player’s playing in recent years. I don’t understand why Yamaha apparently missed the most obvious combination of features in the new Revstar lineup. That being a P-90 guitar with a stop tailpiece, similar to Buck’s original Revstar.
I wish Yamaha would introduce a 24 fret version soon. Chris is definitely the right guy to promote this axe. You convinced me to get one even though I'm more of a 24 fret kind of player.
Would love to hear Chris playing an original SG2000. I've had one, and SG1820 and a revstar, and whilst I'm no Chris Buck, I know which one was a level above.
I wanted to get a revstar but got the golden jv Tele instead... But I belive these yamahas will be around next year so I can still get one... Probably the blue p90 one
I was excited at revstar 1 launch at Yamaha and hated the neck. I like D necks. I hope they have changed. I have a Gibson les paul double cut with P90s which I love. I have 2 Yamahas Pacifica and Cpx. Lee your playing is getting better and better good on u
Revstar Schmevstar. Yamaha has produced some beautiful and practical electric guitars over the decades. But nothing has topped the SG2000. It is every bit as good, if not better, than anything else out there.
I am listening to these licks repeatedly Great tone, great playing How to get the tones played by Chris? What pedals to use? Can someone please help me on this?
Okay, my 2 cents right here. I've watched a dozen videos of how great these are, for the price. Finally decided to go to my local music store to try one. I've never owned or played a P90 guitar so I was curious. Let me say this, don't buy into the hype, this is not a PRS killer, or not punching way above its paygrade... I tested the RSS02T Standard, which retails at around $800. It sounded nice, but the electronics felt cheap, there was some crackle when turning the pots, the tuners felt extremely cheap, the stainless steel frets (which are listed as jumbo or medium jumbo) are tiny and the fret ends are pretty sharp. The bridge looks like its made of tin, and the guitar is pretty heavy despite the chambering (yeah, I know it's for resonance). On the plus side, these pickups sounded great. It's just - my Mexican Tele plays better, sounds better and feels much more premium... And I bought it for $699. So yeah, these Yamahas are pretty interesting but far from the Holy Grail of affordable guitars... If you upgrade the tuners, polish the fret ends, change the pots, and swap the tunomatic bridge, this guitar will rock, but then again, it would cost 1000+. As it is, I would say it's fairly priced, PRS SE offer better quality in my opinion, as made in Mexico Fenders (not a fan of the brand by the way).
According to Andertons' original video, it was to allow the chambering. I've had one a few weeks and it's a really comfortable size. The surprise, though, is that it's not all that light - my chambered Elcaster weighs a feather compared with the Revstar.
Yes, they are still heavy. The body wasn’t small in the first place. There’s a balance between too small or large to be comfortable sitting down and standing. They didn’t really need to make it larger, especially since weight is an issue. Chris looks right with a guitar that size because he’s tall, Lee looks like he’s playing his dad’s guitar. Oh well.
I’ve just watched an interview with John Frusciante immediately prior to this. Reading all the adulation for someone who is good but so overrated. On the other hand Chris Buck really is the real deal. Possibly the greatest contemporary guitarist. Just stunning. Brilliant talent.

Not a fan of John McLaughlin, huh?
well this is not what i had queued up for my lunch break but i guess this is what i’m watching
