I was diagnosed just over a year ago at 24 and it definitely is scary at first. Especially because we found it by accident on a random blood test. Diabetes has been a learning curve but I’m thankful for the online diabetic community in making me feel more at ease.

@@marycomeau it was crazy, I’ve had my A1c checked for years because there’s a super strong family history of diabetes on my moms side and in less than 6 months I went from normal A1c to diabetic, we found it on blood work I’d had done for what was going to be an egg donation. It was crazy but I’m glad I haven’t had to deal with dka but extreme highs are awful

I was diagnosed at 7 turning 8 in 2018 I was skinny to the bones and I kept chugging water and didn’t want to eat long story short after shopping with my aunt I had a hotdog and 2 bottles of Fanta because I was so thirsty my mum took me to the doctor after and I was rushed to the hospital so stupid us walked to the hospital because we walk to the doctors and she said no the the ambulance because it was around the corner. A few moments later she was carrying me because I could not move. And you know how it feels to be high you vomit feel week and you feel like your about to collapse so we go to the hospital and I had sugers of 40 point something or 30 point something but get this my ketones were 7.8 and 2 week or more we were finally aloud out of hospital 😢

3 years ago (I’m now 16) I was diagnosed and my sugar level was 65mmol/L! (1,200mg/dl) found out 4 days later when I woke up from a temporary coma as it took a further 5 days to get my sugars back into normal range, and at one point I’d lost so much circulation that they had to cut off a literal piece of my finger to get blood! All fun and games, but three years on I share the same setup as you (ie dexcom G6 and omnipod dash) and am loving life, not letting diabetes stop me doing the things I love! Just goes to show how important an early diagnosis is and you helping raise awareness of the symptoms puts out an amazing message! So thank you

My sugar was 518 when I was diagnosed and I was actually in a very similar situation, Passing out in the doctors office being told by the doctor to rush me to the hospital or go by ambulance. I couldn’t imagine 792. Now when I see over 250 I freak out. I had symptoms for years prior to my diagnosis at 14 but we just overlooked them.

I got diagnosed at age 2 and a half, I’m 28 now. I was so sick, the doctor thought it was just the glue going around. It was Labour Day weekend. The biggest saving grace was one of our dogs who never, and I mean NEVER, came upstairs and tried to get my mom’s attention. She said I looked like death warmed over, dead eyes and whiter than Casper. She looked at my dad was like we gotta go NOW. Long story short, I went to the hospital and got helecoptered to a better hospital 3 hours away. Thank you, Duke, I miss you.

My husband was diagnosed with diabetes at 10 years old and I thought this isn't to bad, nothing to serious while we were dating and even first married but I remember the first time he went very low and had a seizure when our daughter was 1 month old and it became very real and scary. Our daughter is now 3 and was diagnosed with diabetes 2 months ago, a month before her 3rd birthday. The stress I feel now that I have to take care of a toddler, who can't fully understand why I have to poke her daily and change her dexcom, is beyond me some days. Trying to figure out how much to give her and why things are happening they way they are is so frustrating, and I have to be careful with who can watch her so I feel trapped sometimes. I remember feeling so angry a couple days after her diagnosis cuz she was high and I couldn't get her blood sugar down and my husband went low and almost had a seizure and the only other person in the house with me was my 18 month old son. I felt alone and scared and for the first time since being with my husband, angry that he had this disease and that now I had a child, a very young child, that has it also and that I was having to take care of both of them. Nobody that isn't living it or taking on the care of someone living with it will fully understand what it's like. Also, two weeks after her diagnosis we found out she has celiac disease so that makes things extra complicated.

You are so right. Even those closest to you don’t fully understand. People, including myself for many years simplify it to just carbs and insulin. But it is so much more complicated - exercise, temperature, time of day, hormones, stress, adrenaline. So many things affect the BG levels. It is all consuming when trying to get it under control. I have learnt that sometimes I have to let it go and start again the next day.
Great to see more T1 on UA-cam. Nice to watch someone that totally gets it. 😊

My babe just turned 4 when we found out he was diagnosed. First symptom was bed wetting since he was so young we didn't think much of it but it was just over night and was unusual. He was dry every morning for a while. Next I noticed him going potty a lot! Then I noticed he was drinking water constantly! At the time I worked at night. So one night I was off I changed him into jammies and noticed how much weight he lost. He's not a very big guy so any weightloss was a concern. For my peace of mind I decided to check his glucose. Well I didn't get any peace of mind and his numbers were almost 500. To the hospital we went! He's been diagnosed for just over 5 months now! I love watching your content, it helps me understand and learn somethings!

Hi there ❤ I was diagnosed in 1981 when I was 5. It all started when I had a bad fever. My five year old body couldn’t take it and my immune system went berserk.
The doctor diagnosed me after examination. My mom thought diabetes was only for adults, but she and I were properly educated afterwards.

I am 16 and was just diagnosed in May of this year! It has been such an adjustment figuring all of this stuff out especially since many things in my life are changing because of the age i am atm but I just found your channel and let’s just say it was an immediate follow! When I was diagnosed I originally went to the eye doctor because I was having some vision problems and I had been really thirsty but we thought nothing of it. My eye doctor told me that my eyes hadn’t changed much but my mom is a worrier and told him she was concerned for diabetes, luckily my grandma had type 2 and was living with us so we checked it on her monitor and it was 467! We rushed to the hospital and luckily we caught it pretty early. It was definitely a very shocking experience considering nobody else in my family has type 1 (that we know of) it also made a lot of things make so much more sense like i would get shaky after i did activity and now i’m realizing my blood sugar was probably low. I’m currently still in my honeymoon phase and i’m a little scared for what it’s going to be like when i get out of it but thank you for sharing your story! It’s really cool and helpful to see someone who has lived with it for so long!

I got diagnosed about 4 months ago, I'm 31 y/o. My dad was also diagnosed as an adult (38 y/o).
I actually was diagnosed by accident, I was having some of the symptoms, but since I have hypothyroidism and other conditions that ALSO can present those symptoms, I only went to the endocrinologist to check on my thyroid.
But here in Brazil it's standart procedure that you check blood sugar levels while fastening, do a full blood scan, cholesterol, all that stuff, so luckily I found out before something worse happened. I was really lucky, seriously. My other body part not functioning well (thyroid) might have saved me 😂

I was diagnosed at age 10 and it started with migraine-like headaches. We went to the hospital because we had no clue why I had these headaches. I went to my local hospital and they did nothing. I then went to a hospital in Hamilton (yes, I'm Canadian) and they were smart enough to check my sugar. I was 30 something (same measurements Mary uses). I was also told that if I hadn't come into the hospital that night, I wouldve ended up in a coma and I probably wouldn't have woken up the next morning. (Not trying to scare anyone but that's the truth with some people). I was also extremely hungry and thirsty. I couldn't eat food fast enough, I couldn't drink enough water to clench my thirst. I was also going to the bathroom a lot (but we figured that was because of the water I was drinking). Now looking back on pictures, I look so pale, exhausted, and sick during the days leading up to my diagnosis. I've now been diagnosed for 8 years.
To anyone who thinks they have diabetes, if you have migraine-like headaches that cause you to scream in pain, that might be a reaction to a high blood sugar.

I was diagnosed with Type1D last year in August 2022. In June's first week, I experienced this symptom of thirst. Ignored it thinking that just because of dehydration. Later in July/Aug, it went terrible, I had mouth ulcers where I lost taste & eventually started eating lots of fruit juices, chocolates, cakes, etc. Lost around 9 Kg in a span of a month. On 28th Aug 2022, I checked my BG & it was 415mg/dl. Booooommmm being an athlete and a consistent fitness enthusiast I had the very first thought, I can't get diabetes, even it's I'll get rid of it significantly sooner through good nutrition and physical exercise. after 14 days underwent all the tests and finally it came out as me being a Type1 Diabetic. Since then life's been a roller coaster full of ups & downs. Yet making all days count in life. More power to everyone out there.

I constantly have to monitor my glucose to make sure it doesn't drop lower than my normal, because I've gone into a coma from it dropping. Mom and I would check ours together, it was an odd bonding habit, but it made me hyper aware of my body and what it says.

I am type 2, have reactive hypoglycaemia and insulin resistance, i had felt unwell for a long time but this one time i ate some pizza and felt awful, spookily i found a blood sugar testing kit that I think i got for free somehow and it was 33! I saw my GP the next day and showed her the reading and was instantly put on medication. Ive avoided insulin so far but i am on 2 lots of tablets and an injection and now my levels are pre diabetic again.

My mom was taken to the hospital overnight by my dad when I was 6; my mom would have died if she wasn’t taken in that night . She is fine now and has never cheated! She said she never wanted to go through that again .
Is it hard living with people if they are always bringing home treats ?? My mom dealt with it all the time with my dad but again she never cheated!!

Hi Mary! Thanks for your videos! My daughter is a fan! She got diagnosed by the end of june this year! T1D... even if she had all of the symptoms, I couldn't believe it, since she had blood works a couple of years ago, and nothing bad came out back then!
When I brought her to the hospital, she didn't feel good at all. Good lord I had a glucose monitor and I tested her! My machine screamed "Hi!"
It's really not easy! You can't eat whenever you want, you have to make calculations, and all. She just got her dexcom G6. We are now waiting to get on the pump.
    That will make life easier!
    And hypos are sooo scary!!!
And she too have other issues, NF1, ADHD, etc.
Well, thanks a lot! You have a lot of energy!

MARY! Both of my sons have Type I and all that you say here is very similar to our experience with them. Our youngest was Dx'd when he was 3 1/2, similar story to yours however he got to ride in a helicopter to the Children's Hospital! That was 20 years ago!! Our oldest was 15 when he was Dx'd and only because we had been through it before did we think to get his sugar tested. That was 10 years ago! They both use Medtronic equipment and are successful at keeping their sugars under control, however as a parent needing to provide the care for them when they were younger it can really be A LOT sometimes, so I'm mindful of what they may be experiencing. Thanks for being the giant, beautiful person you are and putting an amazing face on T1 folks! Wishing you all the best!! (yes I Subbed, ok? really such pressure!!)

And as we did a Prick my sugar was 33.3. I had to stay in the hospital for 3 days as my sugar levels were everywhere . I was lying on the sofa all day and my stomach was aching

I agree with you, getting diagnosed as an adult is so hard. I grew up for 26 years, eating, and being a bit carefree, now it just seems overwhelming. Even four years later, they have to count carbs, watch your diet, even the sad realization that you can’t enjoy the foods that you once did.

I was also caught late. My sugar was about 684 I believe. I was only 9, and we found out at a running thing at my school. I was dropping weight and I couldn’t run two laps. For an energetic third grader, that is really bad. My mom made an appointment and I peed in a cup and the doctor was like leave right now. Go to the hospital. I remember my mom crying calling family and I was in the back seat saying it will be okay. I’ll live, it’s fine. And yeah. 8 years later, I’m doing great!

I got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in July of 2017, I got super sick one night after drinking a bunch of soda and sweet tea and it got to a point where I was feeling drunk and ended up passing out on my neighbors floor. Long story short they got me to the hospital where I was mentally unconscious while my body was awake for 3 whole days, and tbf I should of died bc my blood sugar upon arrival was 1067. The fact that I'm alive now still amazes me...

Sometimes our bodies make choices that we are not aware of. Four years ago my mom experienced an aortic ruptured aneurism. She somehow knew something was wrong and that she needed to go to the hospital. One thing to know is that this has a 10% survival rate because it is so hard to catch before it’s too late. Her body knew something was wrong and didn’t fight it. And that is part of the reason she is alive today.

Thanks for sharing you story. I was diagnosed with T2D after 55lbs of weight loss and thirst so strong it only felt good when I held near frozen liquid in my mouth. I was on medication at the time for another issue and the side effects of that was basically the symptoms of diabetes - except the weight loss, but I saw that as a positive. Interestingly, and perhaps because of the weight loss, I felt better with my blood sugar in the high twenties than I do now with it under control. Even now, I don’t feel it when it’s too high but man do I feel it when it is too low! I see you sweating and shaking and it’s like a mirror. Anyway, thanks for sharing, eh.

I was diagnosed six months ago a age 62. I went to the doctor for a blood pressure med check and he ran a blood panel. My blood sugar level was 530, my A1C was 13.2, Cholesterol at 2700 and Triglycerides at 4100. Oh, and icing on the cake, my blood pressure was 96/60. My doctor called my numbers "near death" but I was not sent to the hospital. He felt that that would be a waste of money for something that could be medicated away. I had done a blood test six month earlier and while my A1C was 5.8, it was not concerning. A year prior, everything was totally normal.
I have been lucky. I started on insulin, but was taken off after 2 months. I spent the first two weeks on meds never once going under 400 (the max that can be read by my Libra 3). Today, my numbers are very good, never out of the safe range of 70 - 180 unless I do something stupid (which I do occasionally). I am on Jardiance, Glipizide, and Metformin and in good control. My only issue is if I forget to eat something right before bedtime, I be awakened by low blood sugar alarm about 2 yours later.
It has been a learning experience for me, and the continuous monitoring devices have been a god send. I have no idea how I would have gotten things under control had I not had the constant input to watch the cause and effect relationship of my actions to my blood sugar.

I am 14 now and was diagnosed at 13 with type 1 diabetes. And it was terrifying. The second me and my mom walked into the emergency room the front desk saw me and instantly call for an ambulance to rush me to Riley Children's hospital . While I was in the ambulance they were putting in Iv`s in my arm. As they were putting in the Iv I blacked out and the last thing I can remember is being in the hospital with 4 Iv`s in my arms and hands and my mom was standing next to me and broke the news to me. And I was terrified and started balling my eyes out and it did not help the fact that I had no clue what was going on. Fast forward to today I now have my omnipod and dexcom and have started to get over my fear of needles. And I am so happy for my dexcom because without it I would still be waking up at 3 am every night to finger stick. To thoes of you who don't have diabetes it not easy. And diabetes does not mean you can't have SUGAR.

I asked my dad to test me but he said it's nothing he also said that about my stubbed toe and 2 days later we found out it was broken. When i ate a cupcake at a Christmas party in my school i felt so thirsty and drank my water bottle refilling it multiple times. Luckily I have a blood test in February.

I was diagnosed in 2011 when I was 19. It was also "accidently" because I felt a little sick but the most annoying was that my view got blurry. So I went to the eye specialist and he said my eyes were perfect but I should go and let the family doctor check my bloodsugar. It was a crazy time and a few month later I was in the hospital because I got a ketoacidosis with sugars about 900.

i know this video is super old but i was recently diagnosed with diabetes a few months ago, and unfortunately i had experienced immediate kidney failure. it started with a fever, and then vomitting episodes. being diagnosed with abdominal migraines, my mom and i thought it was normal. but after having an iv (which i normally due with my abdominal migraines), my mom said i didn't feel better. she took me to the doctor, and i started to feel hazy and i could barely see, everything was like a bright light. the doctor said i did have the flu and the next day, i also had strepthroat (unsure how to spell). they kept me overnight, and i started acting "out of it". they took me to a children's hospital, and started pumping medicine into me for around 5 days. the medicine actually made my kidney worse, according to my mom. i don't remember much from that hospital, but i woke up in the icu. i stayed there for about 5 days before transferring to another hospital to take care of me. that's when i found out i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. at first, i didn't really think much of it. i was discharged from the hospital about after 17 days, and that's when i realized how hard it would be to adapt. a few months later (now), it's actually really getting to me. even with reassurance from the doctor that i'm healthy and not sick, i can't help but feel like it's my fault or if i could've done something to prevent it. i always sleep with super cold temperatures, so maybe if i had taken a minue to make it warmer in my room the diabetes would've never come out. i'm honestly still super scared, and i want to be "normal" again, not on a sensor or insulin. i turn 14 on august 11th, and i've heard about pancreas transplants and how they've been going well so far. i know that there's a chance i might not even be qualified to do it, but i'm really praying that i can. i hope everyone who has diabetes is doing well right now, and that people who don't have it should never have to go through this

Yeah that's people not understanding the difference between type 1 and type 2. My brother in law has type 1 diabetes and he always smiles when someone says something and I'm right there already explaining why that won't work. I say well the difference is he is a growing boy who needs carbs but his body doesn't make insulin like your and my body. that would only work if you and I were eating more than our body can naturally make. I don't think that applies to him. I feel so bad for him. Eating is such a chore now instead of something he enjoys and I see when he's burned out. I relate to the burn out when it comes to epilepsy. The alarm to go to bed gets old, medicine, doctor appointments, and getting poked every 2 weeks to a month is exhausting. I can't imagine having to do that every day. You are amazing!

This is a bit morbid, but diabetes killed one of my friends. She was diagnosed in her mid 40s, was in the hospital for something else. When she came home she fell and could not get up off her bathroom floor. Turns out her blood sugar was sky high. They got it under control, she was super excited to be able to walk to her front porch again but she kept mistaking her longterm and short term insulin and that's what did her in.
My last conversations with her was her commenting that she was just incredibly thirsty and I remember telling her that it was a sign of high blood sugar. She checked it and was high and she stated she had to hop off to deal with it. Never heard from her again and not a day goes by to where I don't miss her.

I am not on insulin because my A1C remains between 5 and 7, and my pancreas produces insulin, but I am considered to be diabetic nonetheless. It is a very weird diagnosis and, while extremely grateful that I don't have to take insulin, I have several conditions that are caused by diabetes and could not understand how that could be the case. My endocrinologist explained that diabetes is an autoimmune disease and that having related health issues does not mean that I have failed or done anything wrong. Too many people still see diabetes as something fat people get from eating too much sugar.

My dad got diagnosed with type 2 in early 2000s. Didn't take care of it at all! Didn't do proper monitoring or anything. He would lose his leg to diabetes and eventually his life to diabetes and cancer. There is a difference between type 1 and type 2. Know the difference! Type 2 is everything about diet and sugar intake. Don't mess with that stuff, it wrecks a whole lot it your body.
