  • What does it mean to be white? MTV’s ‘White People’ is a groundbreaking documentary on race that aims to answer that question from the viewpoint of young white people living in America today. The film follows Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and filmmaker, Jose Antonio Vargas, as he travels across the country to get this complicated conversation started. ‘White People’ asks what’s fair when it comes to affirmative action, if colorblindness is a good thing, what privilege really means, and what it’s like to become the “white minority” in your neighborhood. For more information on ‘White People,’ and to join the conversation, head to race.lookdifferent.org.

      +Howl AtTheMoon 1)Africa is not and was never one big homogenous country. 2) African leaders enslaved their enemies not based on race and did not enslave their offspring. 3) Whites in Europe already had indentured servitude. 4) Whites in America enslaved them based off the sense of racial superiority and enslaved and sold the offspring of slaves.
      In short you are really an idiot about history.

      +Lineage2MediaCom 1 ) Ending slavery because it was politically convenient and following it up with legalized racism is nothing to be proud off.
      Welfare was given to slaveowners not slaves.
      Having a black minority president is again nothing to be proud off.
      Whites are not the sole contributor of western civilization and justifying past atrocities by saying that blacks are not in worse conditions when things could and should be better here is a stupid argument.

      I come from the Middle East (I'm not Muslim) and people there put alot of focus into faith and the reason for that is that Faith can be changed but with the West, there's racial issues and you can't change race as it's genetic compared to faith.

    The Scholarship girl is a great representation for many of comments below
    She believed she was being penalized for her race based mostly on the fact she didn't get what she wanted.
    Then when the facts were given to her about how scholarships really work, she suddenly was the victim and felt attacked.
    Basically some people aren't even capable of talking about race without getting defensive and playing the woe is me game. Hell, this documentary was created to give white people a voice on the issue of race, and many folks still got defensive and felt attacked. Not to be mean, but many of you wouldn't last a week in the average minority shoes with that kinda mindset.

      TheDalinkwent spawktalk.blogspot.com/2015/07/do-universities-discriminate-against.html
      Many people believe that universities discriminate against white people in admissions and in the giving of grants. According to the MTV documentary “White People” this is false. According to MTV, whites are actually 40% more likely to get a private scholarship than non whites are and this refutes the idea that universities discriminate against white people. In this post I will show that MTV presented information dishonestly in their documentary and that the very study they cite actually shows that white people are discriminated against in the grant giving process. Then I will review the academic literature showing that even greater discrimination against white people exists in the admissions processes of elite America colleges.
      MTV bases its claim off of the paper “The Distribution of Grants and Scholarships by Race“ by Mark Kantrowitz. In this paper Kantrowitz looked at the proportion of different kinds of grants given to a nationally representative sample of 214,000 American college students between the years 2003 and 2008. As MTV reported, the analysis showed that Whites are more likely than non Whites to be given a private scholarship. What MTV did not report, however, was that the average private scholarship given to a minority student was 18% larger than the average private scholarship given to a white student. More importantly, MTV ignored the data from the same paper on all grants, rather than just private scholarships, which showed that non whites are roughly 10% more likely than whites to be given a grant. Clearly then, MTV cherry picked data from the study that supported their narrative and ignored results of the very same paper that contradicted it.
      Curiously absent from MTV's coverage is any mention of discrimination in the college admissions process. Many colleges put a premium on Black and Hispanic students such that they are more likely to be admitted to the university than an equally, or even more, qualified white student. In fact, a recent survey of 338 American universities showed that one in four colleges openly admit having such policies. These effects are the most extreme among highly selective colleges. This isn't surprising since, by definition, non selective colleges admit almost anyone. One recent survey of officials from 68 highly selective colleges found that “ membership in an under-represented group” tied with “exceptional talent” as the top pick for what makes a student “fit” their university.
      The best work on this subject was carried out in 2004 by the Princeton sociologist Thomas Espenshade. Espenshade's study utilized data on 124,374 applicants to 10 of the most selective universities in the whole country. He found that if you control for differences in SAT scores, whether or not applicants had alumni in their family, and whether or not they were involved in college athletics, black applicants were 5.2 times more likely than white applicants to be admitted. Hispanics were 3.5 more likely than white students to be admitted and Asians were 0.7 times as likely. Similarly, a recent report from the Association of American Medical Colleges found that if you look at students who apply to American medical schools with MCAT scores of 26-24 (a bad score) and GPAs between 3.2 an 3.39 Blacks were over 7 times more likely than Whites to be admitted while Hispanics were 3.7 times more likely to be admitted. The reason that MTV chose to ignore this literature is obvious. It clearly demonstrates beyond any reasonable doubt that there is severe discrimination against Whites (and Asians) in elite academic institutions.
      One effect of this pro Black discrimination is that Blacks can get degrees without being as smart as the White people who get the very same degrees. This was demonstrated in 1992 by the Department of Education's National Survey of Adult Literacy. The NSAL interviewed a nationally representative sample of nearly 14,000 Americans and tested their ability to read, understand documents, and use math in practical everyday scenarios. The test of mathematical skills is the most revealing: the NSAL found that Blacks in graduate school scored, on average, in-between Whites who never went to college and Whites who went to college but never received a 2 year degree. Blacks with a 4 year degree scored the same as Whites who never went to college at all.
      One obvious consequence of this is that it means that if you compare blacks and whites with the same qualifications on paper the white individual will tend to be significantly more competent than the black individual. This may be why, as liberals so often like to point out, if you have whites and blacks apply for a job with identical resumes white applicants are usually preferred over black ones. Thus, it may indeed be racism that explains the results of these experiments. Only that racism might be anti-White.
      MTV's attempt to deny that universities discriminate against White people was pathetic. It is the only kind of anti White discrimination that everyone knows about and their own sources clearly showed that it was real. They cherry picked numbers and lied hoping that no one would notice. In so doing MTV has demonstrated for us another prevalent form of anti White racism: the media is constantly trying to push the false narrative that society is structured in such a way that Whites are illegitimately more successful than non Whites and, as a result, White people owe something (or everything) to non Whites. The fact that they have to result to blatant lies to prop up this narrative is telling. The narrative is bullshit and the harder they push it the more obvious that becomes.

      TSwiftfan88 Sigh...the point was the girl was whining that she felt slighted because she didn't get any scholarships and that minorities had a advantage and yet data proves white people are 40% more likely to get scholarships than minorities.
      Now you're saying its because they work harder than blacks, which you have no way of knowing besides pulling it directly out of your ass.
      Whats so goddamn frustrating about reading comments like yours is folks of your ilk are quick to dismiss any type of racial bias, but then will spew racist bullshit as a argument. Unless you've personally witnessed the work ethnic of every white and black student in the nation then you couldn't possibly know why whites are more likely to get scholarships than blacks.

    A scarily significant number of people are missing the point of this documentary. It's not meant to shame white people or make us feel guilty for being born white. The point of this documentary is to highlight the significant differences between being white in America vs being a person of color in America. If watching this documentary made you feel angry or guilty or shameful, then dig real deep and ask yourself why that is. Because unless you've thought or done something worth being ashamed of, the volatile reaction you're having isn't normal. Acknowledging that we benefit from white privilege doesn't mean people want us to "take responsibility" for things like slavery. It means acknowledging that the system our society was built upon unfairly benefits white people more than people of color. Collectively, no matter what race you are, we should make an effort to change that injustice.

    • @nokorihi
      @nokorihi 9 років тому +65

      ***** Because a lot of white people do live in their own little bubble. It wasn't until my college years that I even realized that most of my friends, acquaintances, etc. are also white. There's never really a "token white friend," so to speak. We live in a society where a lot of people, either consciously or subconsciously, view being white as the default, so they never question why it is that they don't have many or any friends of different races. Again, it's nothing you should be ashamed of unless you are actively and purposefully avoiding any sort of relationships with POC. It's just another one of those things we should take the time to discuss and think about why it's more likely to encounter a white person who only has a handful of friends outside of their race while someone whose not white has plenty of white friends - sometimes more than people who are of the same race as them.

    • @nokorihi
      @nokorihi 9 років тому +60

      *****
      Why are you so fixated with black people? They aren't the only minority, yet every example you've given is "black people" this and "black people" that. Additionally, a black person doesn't have to live in "inner city areas" to have a majority of friends who are also black.
      Again, there's nothing shameful about someone admitting they don't have a lot of friends outside of their race - to say that they live in a "bubble." But it's important to think about why that may be. It could be because they live in an area where there aren't a lot of other races; therefore, it's within reason that most of their friends are the same race as them. But if that's not the case, then asking why their group of friends is only or mostly one race is an important question. And like I said, this seems to occur more frequently with white people.
      If you're offended by that, then I don't know what to say. No one is trying to offend you. And honestly, no one is saying anything offensive. They're just speaking up on how this society works. You can't just be "offended" by something because talking about it happens to make you feel uncomfortable or guilty.

    I'm Black. When I was younger, I went to a predominantly Black school in a more rougher area of my state. I never really thought much of race, mostly because I was younger and it never really popped into my head that much. My parents raised me to be a respectable, law-abiding, and nice person. So I spoke proper, didn't use any slang, and had a strong moral code. Because of that, a lot of the black kids around me who either weren't raised as such or just didn't care, always called me "White". I got called White for following the rules, reading at my grade level, and doing my work.
    Then I went to a more predominantly white school in the seventh grade in a nicer area of the state. I had a lot of white friends, but not very many black friends. A lot of the black kids in that school were acting up, causing trouble, blah blah blah. Now of course there were the fair share of white kids acting up, but it wasn't as much of the white populous as it was the black. However, there were significantly less black students than white at my school. There were black students that weren't causing trouble like the others were. But by the populous that regularly acted up, didn't do their work, and spoke with slang, I still got called white. Then some of the white kids would say "Wow, you're really nice for a black guy" or "You talk really well/white". After a while, I started to go along with it and I'd introduce myself as a an "oreo" or a "really white black guy".
    It wasn't until I got into college that I realized, after a talk with my dad, how messed up that joke was. Basically, the entire premise behind it was that black people were the ones causing trouble, not doing work, and being bad, while white people were the exact opposite. And because of that, any black kid that did their work, spoke properly, didn't listen to rap, and didn't cause any trouble, was white, and vice versa. I realized that joke was stupid and it perpetuated a stereotype that needs to be stomped out, or at least people need to realize that not all black people are trouble-makers or slang-talkers. It can be really easy to think that because those are the ones more predominantly shown in the media, but honestly, if white people were shown to be acting up on a more regular basis *like* a few unfortunate members of my race were, then people would be more likely to think that toward white people.
    Basically, what I'm saying is that if you refer to yourself as a "White-black person" because you're nice, upstanding member of society that does their work and doesn't cause trouble, that's not right. Even if it is a joke. Because all you're doing is just furthering the stigma that all black people are the trouble-makers you sometimes see on the television. There are black people that do so much good for society, and there are black people that don't. There are white people that do so much good for society, and there are white people that don't. Every race has their own group of people that don't do right and act foolish. That doesn't mean we should let that group define an entire race, even if you do happen to see them on the news committing crimes more than another. Just because a few black and white people run gangs and talk like they're idiots, that doesn't mean that's what the entire race stands for and that *definitely* doesn't mean that's what the entire, or even a majority, of that race is like. This extends to *all* races, not just whites and blacks. You should not define an entire race just because certain people do or have done certain things. Slavery does not give any black person an excuse to be cruel or unfair to a white person *unless that white person has taken you as their slave right here, right now.* Just because yes, a vast majority of white people *back a long time ago* were slave masters, slave owners, or just flat-out agreed with slavery, doesn't by any means mean that all white people back then *and* today are like that.
    All that matters is you figure out who *you* are. Not this stigma of "Black people are ghetto" or "White people are stuck-up and boring". Just do you, and look back on great leaders of our respective races that pushed for rights, equality, and progression. That's what it means to be a certain race.

      Now, I never claimed to be disliked by the entire African American race. Just the few that had skewed perceptions of the world and wanted to keep me down. But every race has members like that. It doesn't mean those few people are the definition for the entire race, and I never said or implied that they were. I'm well aware that the some of the Black kids I went to school with that wanted to bring me down to their level didn't like me for my personality as well as my education. But what I'm saying is after a while, I decided I didn't need their approval, because they were what the African Americans weren't about. It's the upstanding ones like Martin Luther King Jr, Maya Angelou, and James Armistead, and even some of the Black heroes alive today that are what our race should be about. Progression.
      And as if your arguments weren't long themselves.

    To white people from a Hispanic American. Don't be ashamed of who you are. You are OK the way you are. Focus on your becoming a better person, not apologizing for who you are or for what your ancestors supposedly did. Many Europeans came to the US without as poor and unprivileged immigrants. They had to work hard for their families and for their communities. Embrace your heritage, American and European.

      {cookiemonster} Stu:Dio Hispanic is not a race. I’m Hispanic by ethnicity, but my race is white because I descend from Spaniards, whom are whites. I suppose the type you are describing are the ones that look like Mario Lopez and George Lopez. Those people’s race is called mestizo, which is a mixed race between White and Native American. So I think you really meant “what about mestizo?”.

    • @antisocialA

      trinity Dowling Hispanics were originally Spaniards and Portuguese for thousands of years. The US made up this make believe “Hispanic” race in the 1970’s they use for mixed race mestizos, mulattoes and triracials from Latin America. Jennifer Lopez is triracial white, Native American and black, but she is European dominant. Both Mario Lopez and George Lopez are European dominant mestizos (European/Amerindian mixed race). George has only like 4% black and he is mostly like a mix of white and Native American. Mario Lopez, I recall was white and Native American. Most Latin Americans in the US seem to be European dominant mixed race people. In Latin America, most seem to be either white (mainly in South America) or mestizo (white/Native American mixed race).
      Originally, Latinos were Europeans. First, they were central Italians, but then became mainly Southern Europeans from Spain, Portugal, Italy as well as the French and Romanians.
      But in the US, the words Hispanic and Latino, which are European identities that belong to whites have been incorrectly used to refer to Latin Americans of any race, many times excluding the real Hispanics (Spaniards and Portuguese) and real Latinos (Italians, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Romanians).

      Like he even says this in the quote saying that skin colour and so on is due to numerous factors like climate, which would directly affect your DNA structure. That is why whites became white, due to them living in a colder climate and needing to absorb more vitamin D in colder climates and blacks being darker to regulate that, being in a warmer climate. Due to this, strong differences can be seen in the DNA and is why, scientifically, not all humans are the same. Also, Lexy he doesn't work closely with DNA often, he is a Mechanical Engineer.

Y’all would scalp the Native Americans and sell their hair and most likely getting paid more if they have evidence on killing them. We couldn’t even vote until 1924, forced sterilization on Native Women until the 1990’s. In Alaska we were only given 10% of our land and let’s not forget that we are the biggest state in America, Native Americans were forced off their own land that was given to them by the government. And the government is literally throwing waste on the little land they have left. Also, we have the highest police brutality than any other race today, our women are being murdered and have gone missing. And here no one bats an eye, this has been our land for 10,000’s and Thousands of years.

It's not all about the past as it is about white people today RECOGNIZING that they BENEFIT from the privilege that stem from racism, slavery, and the oppression of an entire group of people in a country that was widely created on the backs of black slaves. After White people accept that fact, then it will be much easier to have the conversation, heal ALL OF OUR WOUNDS, because white, black, native americans, etc., are all hurting from what has happened in the past, and we can figure out a plan for everyone to finally live EQUALLY in OUR country.

    • @ChrisH124
      @ChrisH124 9 років тому +4

      I fail to see what that has to do with anything, listen, the problem with white people is that most of you fail to grasp the simple concept of acceptance. We live in america. AMERICA, which was built on the backs of black slaves. And white people refuse to accept the simple fact that many of your Fortune 500 companies benefited or were created through the selling, trading, and the exploitation of other human beings! The white privilege that you benefit from to this day stems directly from slavery! Black people still were not viewed as equal even when slavery was abolished (JIM CROW), and we JUST earned the right to vote in 1964 and didn't have to worry about being killed or take bullshit literacy tests that the average American wouldn't pass, or pay bullshit poll taxes. It is your white privilage that allows you to sit behind a computer and tell me that essentially slavery in America wasn't "that bad" because slavery happened in other places too. In no other place is the enslavement of black people felt more strongly TODAY than in America, period. How about you go do a history lesson and see how your ancestors treated mine, wake up, and then you can comment on a post about racism in America.

    • @Ciscogrande

      Chris Beauchamp I believe you guys fight between brothers, Americans vs Americans, when the reason why you guys had legally slavery is because of the British heritage, in Spanish territories it was totally forbidden by law since the Catholic Kings in 1490's.
      Be grateful to live where you live today, 90% of the world population would kill to be born there in the US, being WHITE OR BLACK, with those opportunities being brought ALMOST equally to both razes. I say almost equally because it is true that sometimes getting our of poverty can be really hard, but the amount of black people being able to prosper and get rich is big enough to claim that both have many opportunities, that simply, in other countries would be impossible.

      Just to correct a few things, minorities do NOT get more privileges than the wealthy. Hence why we're the minorities. According to this documentary, we DON'T get free college tuition. And being on public assistance is not anything good to look forward to. Majority of the people on public assistance are on it because they HAVE to and genuinely need the help. Nobody WANTS to be on public assistance. When you get it, it limits the jobs you can get and apply for, resulting in people staying on it for years with no way to get off of it. And as for the jobs, we definitely do not get handouts. We apply and go on interviews just like everyone else but due to the fact that we are minorities, we don't get it. Here's a fun fact... did you know that if two people were to hand in the same resume with the same exact experience and credentials but were signed with "white" and "black" names... the "white" name would be more likely considered for an interview?
      So don't sit here and say that minorities get jobs handed down to them when there are 15,16, and 17 year olds out here looking for work so they can save up for college (because after all.... we learned they're less likely to get scholarships) and even adults with great resumes who won't even be considered just soley based off their skin color.

    The thing that pisses me off is in the beginning segment that they say that the only thing about being white is the skin color, but being Asian, Africa etc. is having a cultural heritage. As well as them saying that white isn't a country. Black isn't a country, Asian isn't a country, and Native American isn't a country, but they all have countries in them that have very rich histories and fascinating cultures that should be celebrated by their descendants, no matter where in the world.

And thank you so much for including native Americans in this! I'm plains Cree from Canada and our people are always left out when we were here before shit went down. It's really amazing to see us in a documentary, thank you. I wasn't going to watch this but curiosity took over. I think it was done in a way that works. It adresses white privilege in a non attacking way that white people will actually watch. It also uses facts compared to experience which needs to be done more. Especially loved the bit where it talked about being "colour blind" always thought it was a little bullshit.

      Moe Lester Oh this wishy washy bull. Then what right does anyone but native Americans have to expect rights ? If you go far back enough in human history you will find everywhere people were waring, slaughtering and displacing each other. Human rights are a relatively new invention....I'll give you a guess as to which group invented them including the constitution which all this liberal and equality stuff stems from ? Clue...it even rhymes with "rights".

    • @KS-kp4fo
      @KS-kp4fo 9 років тому

      Moe Lester I mean are we really going to pretend that if the Chinese or the Mayans or whoever else conquered North America that they would be very peaceful and come sing kumbiya with the natives ? In a world where we all played by the rules of survival of the fittest, it just came to pass than certain groups proved fitter than others.
      In the case of white people we proved to be especially ingenious in advancing quicker than other groups and then we set about doing exactly what they would have done to us if they could (and did, Europeans were slaved by the middle eastern empires for example). That's just history and you can guarantee than every group come from bloodthirsty, ugly histories. What you can't guarantee is that if another group had proven to be dominant that we would live in a world were things like "human rights", "liberty equality fraternity" and anti animal cruelty societies would exist. Nobody in fact other than whites has shown any appetite to look after the interests of anyone but themselves.....yet whites through their good nature have fought for lofty ideals. And it's this you benefit from and spit back in our faces ?
      I don't really care about that. For me it just boils down to this.
      Others : "Whites stop looking after your own interests! Live lives of guilt and shame and join the back of the que !"
      Us after another few years of this.......
      " No."
      What you gonna do about it ?

Decreasing the property value of those black peoples homes, decreasing wealth and generational wealth to give to there kids,while white peoples homes gained property value and they made more money from this allowing them better opportunities? The whole thing is rigged and it only add unnecessary blame on black people who were the actual victims of a system. Do you want me to provide evidence? Because I feel it would do you one better if you actually looked it up. Now black people have to face people with thousands of dollars in head starts on disproportianatelly unlevel playing to where its nearly impossible to bridge the economic gap. Wight Power There have been multiple amendments to that act. Most specifically, the 14th amendment, which was implanted right after the civil war. This granted citizenship to people born within the United States and subject to its jurisdiction regardless of their parents' race, citizenship, or place of birth.
      Native Americans weren't enclosed in this amendment but two years later that was changed.
      There have been many other changes throughout the years including granting Pacific Islanders citizenship, and in 1952 when the Immigration and Nationality Act was passed, making it legal to come to America no matter your race or sex. Sure, it was edited substantially in 1965, but it was not implanted in 1965.
      (Also, the laws were changed all the way back in 1795 when the time was increased from 2 years to 5 years. So don't act like the laws were never changed).

      Kind of like US media. Why doesn't Whiteywood ever hire an actual Native American or Asian American in their movies as lead actors? If a demographic of people feel like they are being neglected to be integrated into "white" culture then of course those people will lash out. They're blamed if they do and blamed if they don't assimilate. Movies like Last of the Mohicans and Last Samurai were both played by white men as lead actors in movies not even about cultures where they needed white actors. It's the equivalent of seeing an Asian man in Braveheart as the lead actor and then to have that movie being taken serious as Scottish culture. If white people are unaware of what is going on, then integration is utterly futile. I fear the worst as media has become even more polarized with less diversity instead of more inclusion since the 1980s until today.

In this idea's essence, it suggests that people of different race should draw dividing lines between themselves, and see their differences as irreconcilable. Hitler shared this idea. The Confederacy shared this idea. Isis shares this idea. It is revoltingly racist at its very rotting core. All cultures, all traditions, and all peoples are beauteous in nature and we should embrace them if we so desire because at our cores, we are all human, no matter how we label each other, and these ideas, these cultures and these traditions do not and can never belong to any single group, for they have all come from one place. The mind. They are part of a collective human bank of ideologies which has its origin in the brilliant mind.

It's like "hey everybody, why don't we all feel bad about things that other people did that we had no part of and had not control over! That way, groups that have their own agendas can predictably coordinate our actions to benefit them by making us feel like our efforts are making up for a burden we shouldn't be bearing in the first place!"
    I'm tired of these political efforts trying to make everyone feel bad about shit that they have no responsibility for. Why can't they try to work towards unifying us by stressing that were all inherently the same and that were fundamentally good by nature? Building a foundation on a positive would have such a better impact on people than making them feel like shit about things they never should have felt responsibility for in the first place.

      The message I got from it was: White people should not be ashamed of being white or feel offended by white privilege, but they should realize that white privilege does exist, largely because of our complicated history with race in America. White people, along with everyone else, should not be afraid to talk about race, and should try to ensure that as a society we are treating everyone equally and fairly. It's fine to feel a certain way but before believing things based on our own feelings or experiences alone, we should do our homework and see if the facts match our feelings, correcting ourselves if needed. Lastly, the US is a melting pot and has had many different waves of immigrants and will continue see more. We should all be welcoming and respectful of each other and try to put ourselves in each other's shoes.

I am a proud Hungarian, and this I can say in any country in almost any circumstance without getting funny looks. And it's totally the opposite of how I feel we should be going as a society, we're just regressing back to how our country used to be, except now the shoe's on the other foot. Generally speaking, the problem with non-white people talking about "white people" is that they tend to assume there's some broad homogenous identity we ALL cling to. I think many of you non-caucasians are thinking of the classic W.A.S.P. (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant). This implies a distinct Central European heritage/allegiance.
    Technically speaking, many Arabs are "white" (though primarily phenotypically, not culturally)... Also, many Hispanics and similar groups (i.e. 19-20% of Mexicans) also fall under the legal (for documentation) and physical (phenotypic) category of "white".
    Much of the REAL difference is in cultural values and heritage. It is unfortunate that many of the Caucasians they interviewed here are either 1. Camera shy, or 2. Woefully uninformed of their own national heritage and background.

People of other nationality and ethnicities are actually way more conservative and holds biases towards their own race, religion, region and are very proud, showoffs and certainly un/knowingly more racist compare to average white american. But such hypocrites can never see it and accuses others for the same. As an asian American born and raised in the states, I have met many white Americans who would begin to talk to me in slow english because they assume that I am illiterate and to them, thats okay to do. However, if I were to speak back to them in the same tone, they would see me as extremely rude and condescending. There is clearly a double standard there. What these people fail to realize is that I am just as American and just as human as they are and that not all minorities are non-english speaking immigrants.
    The sad fact is: Many white people (especially in america) will never know how minorities feel when faced with subtle racism in their everyday lives.

      +Nicholas Moriarty, I do not think the documentary was intended to depict whites, european, or caucasian racial backgrounds as evil or to demonize them. I think it was intended to open the minds of others that may not see or understand what society is teaching us without the human race actually being aware! Race is a touchy and sensitive subject. However, if we as humans act like it is not a factor in everyday life, it would be a fallacy, and a horrible disservice to ourselves and others! Being mindful of discrimination, racial prejudice and our own racial privilege is not a bad thing. I totally understand how you (i assume you are white), can feel "biasly" targeted by this video. But keep in mind this is from true accounts of people like yourself (race) that want to let others know what's going on in the world that they also had to find out themselves! I understand as a fellow human and I also know I can't completely understand exactly how you feel because i am colored! But i do know that it is hard and if we learn from each other and progress, we can make huge strides to being a more knowledgeable and understanding of others different from us! Racism is not born in us, it's a learned act! I coming from an loving and accepting place, and only wish to try to learn and teach more people! ALOHA... Have a great day or night

    The only 'privilege' in life is being born to two good parents. Two good parents who are both mentally & financially stable. Two committed, mature adults who are in a healthy long-term relationship and are greatly motivated to raise their offspring in a strong family environment. Races with poor family values are the ones who are 'struggling'. Try to find out which races are more likely to bring kids into this world, raise them in unfit conditions, and instantly place them at a disadvantage in life. Once you do that, then you can talk to me about 'white' privilege. And before you attack me, take note that I am not white.

    • @Bete_Noir
      @Bete_Noir 9 років тому +15

      Chet Lemon "Races with poor family values..."? So, in your fantasy universe, all people of color are from dysfunctional families and all whites are from families that are "both mentally & financially stable"? I sincerely hope you're under the age of 10; otherwise, that's just uninformed, lazy thinking.

    • @chetthedebt2169
      @chetthedebt2169 9 років тому +12

      Bete Noire You completely [and probably intentionally] misinterpreted what I said. Your 'argument' attempts to personally belittle me, puts words in my mouth, and also goes to the sarcastically ridiculous extreme to try to prove a point (which you failed to do). Lets put it like this.... Statistically, some races are less financially stable than others. Statistically, some races have very high teen pregnancy rates. Statistically, some races have high rates of single parent households. Statistically, parents of some races are more likely to abuse their kids. There's plenty of info that points to some races placing a much higher emphasis on the family environment than others. A black man from a stable middle class household is at no more of a disadvantage in life than a white man from a stable middle class household. A black man born into poverty is at no more of a disadvantage in life than a white man born into poverty. The confusion comes from certain races having a higher poverty rate. Being born into poverty isn't a problem with 'privilege' or 'the system', it's a problem stemming from parents bringing kids into unfit conditions. NOTHING will ever compensate for an unmotivated, irresponsible or unwilling parent. NOTHING. It's NOT up to society or the Government to compensate children for the irresponsibility of their parents.
      If you seriously wish to debate this further, chill out with the ad hominem and keep your responses similar in length to mine. .

    • @StudzMcSexy

    • @chetthedebt2169
      @chetthedebt2169 9 років тому +6

      Bete Noire I am not making any inaccurate statements about 'entire races'. As 'Studz' said, you have interpreted statistical trends as all inclusive. This is an error on you, not on me. I'm not sure why you've chosen to interpret information in that manner, but that's not what's being stated. If you want to talk about any specific stat I mentioned, let me know, I'll provide sources or we can just go down the list one by one. I am not attributing behavioral characteristics to race, but pointing out a cycle of self-inflicted misfortune happening within racial groups. A cycle that will continue until it's acknowledged and steps are taken to break it. Teen mothers are more likely to raise teen mothers, smokers are more likely to raise smokers, an abused child is more likely to abuse their child, welfare parents are more likely to raise welfare parents, single mothers are more likely to raise single mothers, drug users are more likely to raise drug users....it's a seemingly endless cycle. Unfortunately, we live in a society that yells 'RACIST!' whenever the shortcomings of any race are blamed for happenings within that race. It's much easier to hate the white man for all the problems in the world. Placing the blame on systematic racism is simply incorrect.

Especially the white youth bc it's always harder for whites to talk about each issues then any other race. What happened in the past happened, it still affects us today, it's still happening today. Ignoring it, calling talking about race "racism" and "communism" and saying "get over it" doesn't address the issues. It's a cover up to hush the topic bc the one surpressing the issue feels uncomfortable. Nobody is saying feel bad bc ur white, no one is saying don't b proud to b white, we're just saying acknowledge there is a privilege that comes with it. That is where change begins.
