  • Several solider letters and accounts will be examined from the battle, not only for surface level descriptions, but also for patterns to soldier observations, underlying clues to soldier psychology, and deeper cultural messages. This lecture will draw attention to the hidden meanings below the surface.

Im blown away and moved. I need more "deep dives" like this in my life. This lecture provides REAL understanding of the Civil War and our ancestors who fought ...and why. So many facets of this war made me remain curious and perplexed for years. This man gave me real conclusions to burning questions. I'm so pleased with this program.

Wow. One of the best speeches I have ever heard. You know how to make a girl cry!!! One, excellent way to describe PTSD. I really felt the horror from the battle field. Two, you brought back many lectures from my American and Brit literature classes in college. Thanks for making me feel 20 again by the way. Three, I remember that slow motion after being in a car accident and when my children fell. Four, I'm an Ohio Stare Buckeye. Go Bucks! Every year the players say the same thing days before the game. The upper classmen can not get the newbies to understand how loud that stadium is. "Oh, it can't be that bad. I can handle it." Then they are crying for mom at the start of the game like in your speech. It's why it takes a while for the Buckeyes to get into a rhythm. Well PSU needs to get rid of that lion roar. And everyone knows the loud speaker is way above regulations and PSU never gets fined. I had to get that in. Sadly, I don't know your name. The description on my phone cut off the info. Can you please tell me who you are? I would love to bring up your videos and read your materials. Thanks.

This presentation was absolutely riveting! Thank you for making that time period come alive. While I don't enjoy the horrors of it, it helps to understand, appreciate, and value the nameless faces on both sides of the war ... in all wars.

Visited Gettysburg and was lucky enough to have Troy lead a short tour. One of the best storytellers the park has.

Listened to this at work a few days ago and want to listen to it again with no distractions. This is the type of talk I wanted to hear for a long time mainly because someone finally mentioned the influence of the Romantic movement in the lives of 19th century Americans during this period. The Romantic movement was not just a literary or visual arts movement it influenced all aspects of 19th century life in Europe and America from the Revolutionary period in America and France through all the movements for Liberty in many other countries. So much of the writing of the Civil War finds its "color" / "flavor" in the Romantic movement. The sentimentality, the language in the letters, etc. How many letters or other written material have you seen the expression "Oh...." As in starting a letter home with "Oh mother if you could have seen..." or even from an earlier period "Oh say can you see..." The harkening back to the Medieval Period or the Revolutionary War. The chivalric attitudes/manners/etc in battle, toward women and children, animals and fellow warriors. There is so much more I could say on this subject, really it's the book in me I'll never have time to write.

We tend to view old letters through the lenses of the Information Revolution and communication efficiency. I started to enjoy reading old letters more when I began to look at them as a form of artistic expression. It's like sometimes when you make small dance moves as you walk through the house. Yeah, I need to walk to the kitchen, but my soul wants to dance. So I do both.

The low audio needs to be addressed.

Again the audio is awful making it difficult to watch. I don't understand why this can't be addressed. It's not the first time you have done this

Have you tried listening with headphones or earbuds? I listened with earbuds and the sound was fine. Also, Addressing Gettysburg usually records this on their own, so you could try watching on their UA-cam channel later.

May we ask what device you watch our live streams? We have tested the audio of our streams on phones, tablets, computers, and TVs and all of them come through clean, clear, and easy to hear. We look forward to your response.

NPS, The critism is widely true across lots of these lectures. Fixing the problem could potentially improve engagement/views. It's "fine" with earbuds or when playing back in very quiet environments, I agree. But thats with volume turned up. When listening to it with any kind of background noise, you either need to compensate with a speaker, earbuds, or just give up.
A good audio engineer can fix this with a single visit and teach you how to make the settings properly. You have multiple gains that need to be maxed before clipping, and the final or initial input is likely you issue. You could also have a bad cable or interference, but audio equipment is generally misunderstood until someone teaches you. Plenty of local pro-audio people out there work at music shops etc. This is a cheap fix with big benefits to the park service mission. Good luck!

I would recommend you add some graphics, maps, photographs to this talk. You are mentioning places and railroad cuts, but you never show any of them. This talk would be much stronger with a series of illustrations.

      Lol. 44:15
The teacher himself was confident with his expressions to paint all the pictures you need. Listen to this again with your eyes closed. It's that kind of lecture. That's my take. I'm on my 3rd listen like that. You might find it more suiting like that.
