  • The leadership of Gen. George Gordon Meade, from the Battle of Gettysburg, through the conclusion of the Civil War, and beyond into the post-war years is examined. Meade, the longest tenured commanding general of the Army of the Potomac, who's army defeats Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia at the Battle of Gettysburg, is often overlooked by Generals U.S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and others after the Civil War. His shifting reputation is examined in this lecture.

I appreciate all of these NPS Gettysburg videos but have to be critical about this one. Not on the speaker, she was great and very knowledgeable. The problem I had with it was the fact that the camera angle prevented us from seeing the slide presentation and since the camera was static, the speaker was frequently out of the shot. This could certainly have been filmed better.

would have been nice to see the slideshow with the presentation. I've become a huge fan of Meades since watching the battle walk series etc. I can't Imagine what it must have been like to take command of an army and a couple of days later be engaged @ gettysburg

I complained about that too. The past 2 presentations they have uploaded the camera isn't even zoom out enough to show the slides. But all of the other lectures do show the slides. They must have a new cameraman.

Great to see Meade getting the recognition he deserves. I do not believe anyone else could have performed as well at Gettysburg.

General Meade is maybe the most underappreciated figure from the Civil War. The last time I checked, he won the major battle of Gettysburg and defeated General Lee after having his job for a few days. Whether he could have destroyed the Confederate Army is doubtful. He lost 20,000 men and many of his major generals. He should be considered a hero and respected as having a key role in the outcome of the war.

Sad to hear that his statue was taken down and pretty much forgotten and even worse, vandalized for 15 years.
No, Meade wasn't perfect, but he deserved better.

To be clear, Meade didn't attend the surrender at Appomattox because he was sick, he didn't attend because he was physically separated from Appomattox Court House because of the opposing battle lines. He was unable to attend.

Unwatchable without seeing the slide presentation. Why waste my taxes putting on such a poorly done show? I'm very interested in the topic, but if you can't afford to have someone sit behind the camera and pan to the screen don't bother posting the video.
The PS has done a great disservice to the presenter and the public.
