would have been nice to see the slideshow with the presentation. I've become a huge fan of Meades since watching the battle walk series etc. I can't Imagine what it must have been like to take command of an army and a couple of days later be engaged @ gettysburg
I complained about that too. The past 2 presentations they have uploaded the camera isn't even zoom out enough to show the slides. But all of the other lectures do show the slides. They must have a new cameraman.
I appreciate all of these NPS Gettysburg videos but have to be critical about this one. Not on the speaker, she was great and very knowledgeable. The problem I had with it was the fact that the camera angle prevented us from seeing the slide presentation and since the camera was static, the speaker was frequently out of the shot. This could certainly have been filmed better.
One problem I have is I wish you would of shown the pictures and slides. Usually you have the camera showing both the slides and the speaker. But this time it's zoomed in too close.
General Meade is maybe the most underappreciated figure from the Civil War. The last time I checked, he won the major battle of Gettysburg and defeated General Lee after having his job for a few days. Whether he could have destroyed the Confederate Army is doubtful. He lost 20,000 men and many of his major generals. He should be considered a hero and respected as having a key role in the outcome of the war.
I would really like to know what was so funny about the picture at 5:04. I'm sitting here wondering "Is it George Gordon Meade in drag or something? Rocky Horror Picture Show with Meade as Dr. Frank-N-Furter?"
I love this lecture series but... who is giving the lecture? Her name is not included in the description, we can't see the slides..... the lectures good, the production quality sucks.
Why can’t you see the slides which were a part of the lecture series. Other lectures become boring if the lecturer refers to a slide. Poor quality production.
I agree that her PowerPoint production should’ve been included as she obviously had worked on it. When all you see is the lecturer and those in audience in front row is a slap in the face to the presentor
Sad to hear that his statue was taken down and pretty much forgotten and even worse, vandalized for 15 years. No, Meade wasn't perfect, but he deserved better.
To be clear, Meade didn't attend the surrender at Appomattox because he was sick, he didn't attend because he was physically separated from Appomattox Court House because of the opposing battle lines. He was unable to attend.
Unwatchable without seeing the slide presentation. Why waste my taxes putting on such a poorly done show? I'm very interested in the topic, but if you can't afford to have someone sit behind the camera and pan to the screen don't bother posting the video. The PS has done a great disservice to the presenter and the public.
The lecture is fine but why photograph peoples heads and the podium rather than showing her slide show ?? Is there no camera person just a fixed video camera. Poor quality production.
@@brianbirrer2373 Such an a*hole comment. If this person lives in Alaska, it's a long drive. Also, why not provide a link to the schedule? Again, A*HOLE comment.
Based on these comments and current events, we have a country of spoiled complainers. We can hear a lecture on a computer that fits in our pocket, but all the commenters do is whine. Thanks NPS for posting this lecture.
Meade was Grant's puppet, for he told him wherever Lee goes,so you will go. So that tells anyone that Grant is going to send his troops into a meatgrinder.
I’ve heard this woman before. She over used “ guys” in addressing the audience. We know his title thank you. I’m not disputing her scholarship but her public speaking needs improvemrnt
Listened another time why she refers always to her book. I don’t like watching the bald heads of audience. Lee’s statue should be down in statuary hall. Meade should be there instead. This woman is not that good she’s dedicated to repeating entire names. We know his name !! If she’s a professor god help her students

Too cheap to hire someone to move the camera?
Yes that would have been nice
Great to see Meade getting the recognition he deserves. I do not believe anyone else could have performed as well at Gettysburg.
Production quality is poor. Nice lecture but I would have been great if the accompanying slide presentation had been included as in the past.
Seriously! They could probably find people who'd do this for free!

Speaker was very good. Not seeing the slides was very bad. Lets get with the program NPS!! We want to see what she is talking about as well !!!
They use to show the slides in these presentations like 5-8 years ago
One problem I have is I wish you would of shown the pictures and slides. Usually you have the camera showing both the slides and the speaker. But this time it's zoomed in too close.
I concur with the other comments in this thread , it would have been great if the accompanying slide presentation had been included as in the past.
Is this Dr. Jennifer M. Murray, who is writing a book on Meade? I'm thinking so.

So was general George Thomas...he never lost
Thanks for showing us the slides ...
Pfft
This happens a lot in these lectures. The presenter prepares the pictures with a purpose
6:00 I'm super curious about what the image shown here is. It's too bad that the recording didn't capture it.

I think meade deserves something better from history than he has gotten.
Awesome presentation! I wish they would share the slides would be easier to follow.

Interesting! But it killed me inside every time she says ‘ this is a cool photograph.’
This type of production is often good for the speaker to monitor the quality of the talk. It was a very good talk. I also like to see her pictures.
Couldn't see the slides so I got half a lecture. Do better please.
Sad to hear that his statue was taken down and pretty much forgotten and even worse, vandalized for 15 years.

I’d rather hear the lecturer and see the slides. Missed so much here. Otherwise good presentation.

Exactly
Why don't you get off your butt and attend a lecture if you care so much? You should be thankful you have the video at all instead of nothing 😁
I'm so said "George Gordon Meade" nearly every time she said his name. I kept forgetting and thought I was watching a lecture about Margaret Mead.
This presentation with powerpoint, for the people in attendance may be fine; but poor at best, for representation as seen here, on you tube ,
If you had a drinking game based on her saying “George Gordon Meade” you’d be hammered ten minutes in!
Totally agree. It's so annoying. Meade is just fine. Or even General Meade.
@@tberkoff I have just sobered up...
You need to show us the slides. Nobody can follow his without them
Sound and video coverage of speaker was at least good
The lecture is fine but why photograph peoples heads and the podium rather than showing her slide show ?? Is there no camera person just a fixed video camera. Poor quality production.
The most horrible part of her wonderfully done presentation is not being able to see her slides!!
Stupid without the Slides - can’t follow the narrative properly - may not watch further 🧐
How do i get to go to a lecture series
look up the schedule. drive to Gburg and attend.
Thanks

Who is the speaker? Thanks.
Why not simply "George Meade"? There's no other George Meade of significance in the Union armies. Harping on George Gordon Meade sounds simply weird.
Horrible job of not showing the slides.
just fixed camera
Those photos were indeed a treat ...thanks for nothing !
I would have liked to observe the slides, and not the bald head, good talk otherwise
amateur video coverage. No slideshow!
*conscience
Maybe whoever uploaded this lecture and wrote the title, was mocking the idiot lecturer. Listen to this "scholar" pronounce conscience 3:24

Yes, a very inelegant habit.
As does your spelling.
Meade was a dude.
Worst. Editor. Ever.
I didn't realize his name was GEORGEGORDONMEADE. One word. So annoying. Meade is just fine.
She says George Gordon Meade too much. Just George Meade or Meade would have been enough.

When is your next presentation, Mary ? I'll take notes.
