WOW! Blown away by the variety of complex sounds coming from this module. I feel I could stand to lose a few modules from my rig if I had this. So glad I held off and never got Braids.
i honestly never heard a fully sounding chord from the module, of course poly is a hassle because any good polysynth usually combines each voice with a tuned LFO/VCO2 giving you more overall frequency body and a fuller sound.pre filter, pre-vca). unfortunately, while very versatile, to achieve this with modular (especially analog) takes a little more than just microtonal pulse-rythms sped up by a few 100x (which the braids seems to perform here.... ... hat tip to adam neelys video about harmonic polyrhythms )
REALLY AWESOME!!! It seems like they scaled back the complexity of Braids (no menus/screens) and also added some very streamlined versions of Clouds and Rings. ALL AT A VERY REASONABLE PRICE and SIZE!!!

Fantastic video as always, Ben. I preordered yesterday, but I have this feeling I might end up with more than one in my case. The built in LPG emulation is stellar. It borrows from so many other MI modules, yet doesn't quite seem like a direct replacement for any. That being said, I never did get around to getting a Braids and this appeals to me much more.
i was always so sceptical of this module because literally everone has it and it has become a hype - which i usually think of as a negative. but now that i'm looking for just a VCO and skimming through various VCOs, nealry all of them doing the same boring standard square, sine, saw stuff with some pwm added, i find myself drooling over this when i see it doing so many different things.
Loving your vids. Truly been a massive help in my Eurorack journey. Best thing about them, is I'm using them as video manuals doing all the hard work for me, when I've not got time to deep dive. Not only that, I've just forgotten about Plaits since I put it in my rack, so cannot wait to dig back in after a quick rewatch. Can't say my partner is a big fan, though :)
Here we go...I ended up here as I am looking for my first vco and you are selling me a plaits...what a brilliant module! ( and brilliant video! ) Obviously now I am more confused than ever...plaits? Twin waves? A111-2? I want them all!! Lol
DivKidVideo yes, I was ready to order a second Rings because I love it so much, but this makes more sense in the long run ... great demo as usual, cheers mate 👍🏻
Thanks for the demo ! I have a rather mixed feeling about the Plaits, on the one hand as such it is a very good module, but when I compare it to Braids I am disappointed. Too many noise banks have replaced the incredible sounds of Braids. I solved the problem by having both modules, very complementary in fact. But Plaits will never replace Braids, whose production stoppage is a loss for the Eurorack world.... A tip: the Spanish company Codex Modulex still manufactures the Braids in 8HP version with original firmware for a very low price. If you can only buy one module, prefer this version of the Braids rather than the Plaits!
This is one of the most musical modules available at the moment I reckon - granted, I don't know every module released - but in terms of how many sweet spot, musical tones it can morph between and land on so easily, I don't think there's much else out there that offers a similar experience?
This definitely strikes me as a "new to Eurorack" comment. They don't call it "Eurocrack" for nothing. There's all too many wonderful, amazing, delightful, musical modules: but this is a very versatile, great module at a wonderful price. I'm trading in three modules I don't have room for for this one in a few hours, and I'm very excited! Thanks for your videos, as I'm hoping to figure this one out a bit more quickly than I spent figuring out the ones I've got. It's not going to happen the way I want, probably, but I'll get there eventually. If the OP meant "is this a great choice for a starter oscillator," absolutely. But there are fifty great modules for every module one knows about, at least. If not three hundred. So many fantastic choices: that's what made Eurorack hard for not-rich people. It's a challenge to stop wanting more.
Want! And I don’t even have a case! Just got a Kilpatrick Phenol. Looking to expand with a few choice modules, loaded into a TipTop Audio Happy ending. Plaits looks like a candidate.
I think a lot of people will currently be looking at expanding semi modular systems with some eurorack. It's a great time with a tonne of options for doing so.
Hey Ben another great demo your channel is invaluable to those who doesn't have a modular shop down the road. Just a quick question. Is it possible to get the envelope out of the auxiliary?
Hi Gareth, really appreciate that cheers! You can't get the envelope out of the Aux output. It might be possible with an adjustment of the code. So when it becomes open source and people start to adjust it and make alternate firmwares that may be possible.
DivKidVideo thanks for your reply. I hope so, it would come in handy for me at least. :) Going to try get a pair of these when they next become available.
The discrepancy in the pronunciation is because in American English the word related to braiding the hair is pronounced like "plate": dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/plait
It would be really cool to see what the CV is doing in videos like this - It's sometimes hard to see how a CV input is working when you can't tell what's coming in.
Good morning, I do try to get modulation and/or audio onto the oscilloscope (Mordax DATA module) as much as possible. What would help is watching a lot of my other videos about modulation modules. It's not just about the modules themselves but the patching, synthesis and how they work. I know that doesn't help immediately, but if watching a few LFO videos really gives you grasp of some potential LFO uses then you hear some modulation in a video like this you'll recognise what's going on. I do often do patch breakdowns that zoom the camera out and look at the wider patch exclusively for my Patreon supporters that might help. All that said, I'll try to bear that in mind for a more direct affect for you.
I mean, I feel like I know reasonably well what you can do with LFOs and modulation in general, but with a video like this (and pretty much any gear video over 10:00), I'm generally jumping through it, trying to get an idea of what it can do, rather than getting a complete overview (I suspect this is something a lot of people do). So a lot of the time I'm going to miss the part where you explain what modulation sources you're using, and it's pretty hard to jump back and find where you describe what you're using, because it could have been 30s ago, or it could have been 10 minutes ago. Time stamps might help, but I guess that would also be quite a bit more work. Can't you do 2 audio and 2 CV channels with the Mordax simultaneously? I mean, the pitch/trig input are pretty obvious from the audio, so it's basically just the timbre/morph channels that are interesting here...
I've been time stamping and making indexes with time links in the latest lot of videos so that should help. You can input anything on the DATA but they all share the same time setting. So a time set to show and LFO won't then show audio with any other than a thick messy waveform. Slowing the time down on the DATA to show the audio wave then wouldn't show you much of the CV signals. So unless I went for two DATAs I can't show both on that at once.
Yeah, right, fair enough. Well, what you do present is definitely appreciated, and I look forward to more, and maybe improvements as the tools improve :)
I’m thinking of getting into modular. Would this be a good first module you reckon? I am in process of bidding on eBay auction for a second hand DFAM, and I have another hardware with trigger outs also.
Hey I love your videos ! Maybe 'cause of you I decide to drop the computer to go to Modular Toys. I was wondering how modulate MODEL parameters with a certain range... ? Thx !
I use the maths to modulate the model parameter. I generate an lfo and adjust the corresponding maths channel attenuverter to control how far the leap to another model is (negative will scroll backwards and positive will scroll forwards). Any lfo coupled with an attenuverter should do this.
I've been wondering about opening the wallet for this (I could still be considered fairly new to eurorack - so still in the dizzying awe stage at the level of variety and options available) but this video has helped, so thanks! Do you plan to do anything a little more in-depth with Plaits?
I absolutely loved your video of braids you did for future music. That module is the main motivation for me wanting to start a modular. I noticed it's discontinued now and a much cheaper plaits has been released. I'm not sure what plaits offers that braids doesn't and what braids has over plaits. Which one should I get? I'm not sure if plaits is 'braids lite' and has vastly reduced sonic possibilities. Both seems awesome though and very inspiring.
I believe after comments from some users, Tony from Make Noise and general feedback that Easter eggs and bonus hidden modes are gone from all new modules.
hello. i once watch a video by schneidersladen (it was part 2 of mutable instruements): There he clicked on some buttons on that module, then there were crazy realistic water splash sounds.... how tf did he do that? thanks in advance, drachenlord
I had my rack all planned out now I can't decide between this and rings! I'm leaning more towards Plaits because it does have the rings mode and the chord mode looks fantastic... Plaits look like it's the best part of Braids, Elements, and and Rings all shoved together
Hmm... I think I'm gonna go for Plaits because of the versatility, but telharmonic plus rings would be beautiful. ARGH! I have an optomix so could I get that plucky sound from rings I like... so I'm probably going for the Plaits. Thanks m8
Hi i controlling my plaits with a beat step pro, I wonder why my sounds dies whenever I plug in gate from beatstep to trig on plaits? Can the trig input being damage or just u function, as zoon as I put the cable to levels the sounds starts again, Anyone that recognizes this problem?
no it can't. But it's a bonus thing really as opposed a main key feature. You can modulate the level input though so using another envelope you can control amplitude more freely.
Coool. I love oscillators. My favorite is Verbos Complex. Which leads to my question for you: is it redundant to have 2 verbose complex oscillators or should I get a different complex oscillator so they can compliment each other in the mix?
not at all. I have a Braids and a Rings and both are capable of so many things that I often feel like I want a 2nd. I think this will fill that need on both accounts.
I feel braids is a more lo-fi, crude and quirky... and with the bit reduction and drift and such. There's a warm place for braids in my heart. Still holding back on bees in the trees, but it's coming.
Ok, good to know. Any way that can tie into the oscillator function? Plaits follows on Braids nicely in terms of weaving hair, weaving sound type thought processes.
Wow. Very cool. The range of sounds seems to rival Elements, minus built in reverb, and for way less HP. Any thoughts on ditching my Elements for this puppy?
It's not Elements at all really. Tonally there's some similarities as there is with Rings and also Tides as an oscillator. Elements is the only module that offers it's left hand side, a complex and varied exciter section to go with a resonator. I think that's really under looked. Of course in use if you're finding it similar, go for it.
No, but if anything it's a bonus to be able to turn this into a voice on it's own. It's a module, so get it into a VCA/filter/folder etc and use modulation to get things moving nicely. You can put envelopes into the level input, so any CV-able envelope will do the trick. Just bear in mind it's a bonus feature for quickly getting percussion that's all.
DivKidVideo sure, but in terms of easy results from one module i don't need cv over mode, but more decay. i see you manually modulating this param all the time in the video. if they simulate an lpg and praise it as a feature, i guess it's more then a bonus. it's always nice to free my real lpg/cvEnv for other purposes.
While I get your point I do disagree, this is an oscillator an improvement re built version of the macro oscillator concept that Mutable originated with Braids. You can use LPGs, VCAs, envelopes etc external to the module. If you lost features from the core tone/mode controls you wouldn't be able to replicate those with other modules. I aren't sure they advertise it as a main feature particularly, but I haven't kept up with how that's been presented by the company.
haha :) please familiarise yourself with the differences in English English and America English pronunciation. dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/timbre :)
on each mediocre comes a stellar one! The jams that often seem mediocre to me are the ones that are almost totally mono. My ears get saturated too fast when there is no stereophonic sound or any dynamics. So I am really pleased that you use the stereofield and proper dynamics in this demo! ;)
Totally understand. I really like mono for a lot of things, but no reason not to explore stereo when given the chance. This isn't meant to be stereo in anyway but some of the modes definitely work great patched that way.
I bought a Plaits just today and I'm blown away by the number of different oscilators. Great demo.
Thanks, it's definitely packed with a wide range of sounds and they modulate nicely too.
Worth it for the chords and speech mode alone. Pumped for this one.
Nice to see those expanded on.
Just setting out in genuine modular (after some time in semi-world) and this looks to be THE must-have. Great demo!
WOW! Blown away by the variety of complex sounds coming from this module. I feel I could stand to lose a few modules from my rig if I had this. So glad I held off and never got Braids.
I do like a module that comes along and makes you take a few things out sometimes. There's usually a few a year that have that wow factor.
braids is cool to , has phase distortion ( casio cz ) and vosim synthesis, which are missing in plaits
Chords mode alone makes this a nearly must-buy for me.
Braids and the WTx4 mode got a lot of use from me so I can see doing the same.
i honestly never heard a fully sounding chord from the module, of course poly is a hassle because any good polysynth usually combines each voice with a tuned LFO/VCO2 giving you more overall frequency body and a fuller sound.pre filter, pre-vca). unfortunately, while very versatile, to achieve this with modular (especially analog) takes a little more than just microtonal pulse-rythms sped up by a few 100x (which the braids seems to perform here.... ... hat tip to adam neelys video about harmonic polyrhythms )

So 3 modules that’s it?
Plaits as in the French word for Pleases.
Maybe. I'm hoping I can pick up a cheap used Elements now that Plaits is out there
Hi John. PM me and we can discuss a fair price.
That's helpful. Thank you. I definitely could still dive deeper into my Elements. I'll give it some time before jumping ship.
ssshhhh, I want a silly-cheap Elements ;-)
Yayyy! 😎
Cheers Tony.
the decay is not cv-able? :(
No, but if anything it's a bonus to be able to turn this into a voice on it's own.
Fuck! So good.
nice one.
wooooowww
10:33 : instant aphex twin
I'll take a reference to something sounding like Aphex Twin.
Had this experience last night with the 2op FM, the module is instant full stop, only just got the module btw, amazing.
How
Sum many muds
Tom brah
tom brah ... tim berrrrrr ... tam bu ... tam bru
I wanted to trust your pronunciation of "plaits", but then I heard your pronunciation of "timbre"... :)
haha :) please familiarise yourself with the differences in English English and America English pronunciation. dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/timbre :)

Get used to this vowel and speech synthesis - you'll hear this often in many mediocre eurorack jams in the near future.
harsh commentary on the youtube / Facebook modular video scene :)
on each mediocre comes a stellar one!
