That's one of my main complaints with guitar demos - of which I have many complaints - "I'm going to demonstrate this great tone to you" then the first thing that happens: they start the drums, drowning out any chance of hearing the tone of the guitar amp.
I learned so much by watching this video, and not only about Plaits, but also how one might apply LFO's to a module. I don't know why anyone would give this video a thumbs down, but I am grateful. I programmed the opening notes of Bach's Art of the Fugue into my Mother 32, patched the KB out into the V/OCT input on Plaits, modulated the "Morph" and "Timbre" of the Wavetable Oscillator (thanks for explaining what "interpolation" does in this context!) using slow LFO's (one from the Pittsburgh Double Helix, and the other from the Mother 32). I then ran the main output and aux output into the Strymon Magneto and proceeded to have a lot of fun with just these few elements. Thanks again for the wonderful video. As a novice in synthland, it is very much appreciated.
Excellent Demo! Thanks for such a clean and detailed walkthrough!!! Perfect viewing for when you have a Plaits due for Delivery tomorrow!!!! Can't wait to get some tracks going with it!!
Good thing you talked about the built-in low pass gate (LPG) right from the start. It took me months to discover that, and it's one of the most important features. [It does not do anything on the three drum algorithms, though.]
great review! @48:00 you mention how you have the Level patched to your sequencer to get accents on the drum sounds. Does that mean you are sending triggers on the hits that you want to create accent on. If so how does this relate to your trigger pattern that you are using for the Trig input.
Awesome, you just sold me one. You seem to be the only one who demoes this as an oszillator instead of just playing back all the presets using the trig and lpg.
Thanks for a great demo! Definitely going to check this out more thoroughly in VCV Rack, but pretty sure there will soon be a HW one in my little rack before long! hahaha
I just abandoned another video by a famous guy who began by explaining his elaborate patch, without saying what the module does - but you have a proper introduction.
What filters play well with Plaits? I love the module so far from using in VCVRack and want to put one in a real system but not sure what kind of vcf and eg to pair it with.
You know, the beauty of Eurorack is that you can really blend anything with anything. If you already have VCF and EG modules, try those. If you don't like them, there are so many alternatives out there. And fortunately, Plaits is one of those modules that does so much on its own that you don't even need a VCF or EG to get started with it...
Such an excellent explanation and demonstration, I saved a copy to re-watch. Side note: Are you a Red Dwarf fan by chance? You have a similar voice to Mac McDonald: Captain Hollister.
I'm not using a computer sequencer in conjunction with my Eurorack system, if that's what you are asking. My most used sequencer is the Doepfer A-155, but I also have a number of other units I have built from kits. If your Keystep or SQ-1 have analog gate and pitch outputs, you can control the Plaits unit directly. Otherwise, you would need a MIDI-CV converter to go from the digital signals to the analog voltages required by modular.
Hey Bart - we talked once around 2012 regarding Tapulous. Funnily enough, I've been audio director of Disney Publishing Worldwide since shortly after that. Small world!
Under the Big Tree dude that’s crazy! Do you know nick gallant? Btw, I got plaits this weekend and having so much fun with it thanks to ur tutorial. Modulated the wavetsble, laid down chords, created a cool robot vocals track
Glad you got into Plaits - it is a powerful module for sure. Nick G and I work together constantly. He covers games, I cover publishing, story telling, Alexa, Google Home - lots of linear and interactive media - basically any audio production required by Disney Consumer Products that isn't games.
I have two clones and the sound is great (clone clouds and clone elements, They sound the same as original.) .. But I have the original Plaits, a use one.
You can get so many nice sounds out of it, but then what? How do I turn it into a melody or lead? Do I go into a VCA, control that with an envelope? Sound design is great but Can it be played ? Can sentences be constructed with the voices and words?
Howdy! You’re the reason I bought the Verbose Complex-which is my favorite oscillator. Which leads to my question for you: is it redundant to have 2 verbose complex oscillators or should I get a different complex oscillator so they can compliment each other in the mix? Thanks.
Well, now that is an interesting question. I am of two minds. First of all, I like having duplicate modules that I really like, because I've done all the work to really learn it, so I can leverage that work to use the duplicate to its fullest. On the other hand, there is something to be said for having a lot of flavors. It's tough, because it is a significant purchase. Let us know what you decided to do...
Well, I use a lot of different things. For this video, I recorded the Plaits into a Bitbox sampler. Great sound quality, and very easy to record into. I then sync it up to the video afterwards.
In that mode, the level jack is used for accent. So if you send a pulse into level, then it will play a drum sound that is a bit louder, and possibly a bit brighter or slightly different sounding, than ones that are triggered from the trigger input. This notion of accenting drum sounds is extremely important in creating more musical rhythms, because it separates the pattern into strong and weak beats. Check out my video on clocks, pulses, and musical time if you like - I get into this quite a bit there.
Err, it is pronounced "platts", as in to plait your hair and not "plates", since it is an evolution of "braids", as in to braid your hair. Schoolboy error haha.

I'm 4 seconds in and he's already mispronouncing the name.
@@nickmoran1 why the weird, annoying religious scolding?
Awesome walkthrough! No fussing with external modules (as so many modular so-called tutorials do!).
Straight to the point! Keep it up man! CHEERS!
Thanks, and I will do so!
agreed, also throwing drums to every walk through....brrr
I don't like that either

Had Plaits since yesterday, one of those things you keep thanking yourself for choosing.
The best Plaits demo thank you, I have just ordered mine
Thank you so much for this video, showing all features of plaits!! Really great! 😀 I'm mesmerized by all the sounds it can make!

This fascination with all presentation!!! So missed on other channels. Please keep going!
Thank you! Will do!
This is an amazing intro! So excited to add this to my evolving synth rack!
Nice. full, complete tutorial .I just bought Plaits and this video it is what I need
The Plaits sound engine has been added to the free Surge XT software synth, for those interested.
great review!

awesome tutorial !!! thank you very much !!! is there a reverb outside the plaits ?? (i.e. at 38:00)
Great rundown. I think it was that British guy that said it best. It could use a fine tune knob on the harmonics knob.
Great run through. Thanks.
Your my favourite Eurocrack anchor. Nothing but good news here!
👍
I wish I never found out about Plaits because I've been wanting to build a modular synth ever since >_> I do NOT need to fall down this rabbit hole.
Best demo on this! Thank you!
i really love that his is open source for my minilogue xd thank you mutable

awesome review, just anlittlebit sas witherspoon the reverb on , specially on the drums! would’ve made sense if it was a part of the module

Nicely done walk through!
Appreciate the feedback - I will use this approach as a guide for future module walk throughs.
great demo
What is the sequencer you are using? Could I use an arturia keystep or a korg sq-1 to control the oscillator? How would I do that?

What do you have going into the level while you're covering the drum sounds?
In that mode, the level jack is used for accent. Kinda skimmed because I've already bought one and done all of this, but this is the kind of review I look for.
Thanks, Warren - that's great feedback. People seem to be digging this presentation style, so I'll be sure to do more of it.
great video, thanks

Braids keeps in my Modular!
I just ordered a clone off reverb
damn , you sold it to me , eurocrack i'm addicted :/
great video I love my new Plaits... Japanese Gamelon? lol..
All that is in that little box ?? Dem French is soooo crafty

I thought the Make Noise tELHARMONIC was cool nut now it seems like a one-trick pony. Thanks
Thanks. FYI, it's pronounced "PLATS" ;)
Unless you're using it with a TR-8S. Platts before Plates, except before Traits.
plaits will do , who cares ?!?!
Its actually pronounced "Throat wobbler mangrome"
It's "plats" if you're Scottish, mate. It's "playtz" if you're Californian, dude. If you live in the American Midwest, it's "dishes."
