i know it's not at all the point of your video lol but it's been really cool to see how much your editing has been improving stylistically ! personally my oscars darling is past lives because it just scratches a particular part of my brain that loves small scale human dramas but i agree that american fiction is also a beautiful movie that deserves more recognition !!

American Fiction reminds me vaguely of Randall Park’s Shortcomings that came out last year, similarly questioning and critiquing how minorities are represented in film but ultimately acknowledging that both nuanced and stereotypical representation can be loved and appreciated at the same time

It’s looking like American Fiction is winning Adapted Screenplay and it deserves it! Jeffrey Wright is my favorite of the best actor nominees too, but I doubt he’s winning over Cillian Murphy. Great video- what’s your Letterboxd? I searched your name and nothing showed

I think the family drama instead of working counter to the movie actually is it's strongest asset, With the satire feel very naff. The Movie perfectly lives by example by instead of being a story of black struggle in deprive communities to assuage the guilt of white people. The movie is just mostly a drama about a middle class black family with ordinary problems and baggage that are depicted as privileged in some way but still face real problems in life, it feels like a movie for black people who don't feel their entire existence is connected to the hood. In this way the movie really nails what it is going for especially with the great performances.
However I do feel that the outdated comment isn't without merit. To say the movie would have come out 10 years ago is wrong, but it does feel like it addresses a pretty outdated stereotype of black media made for white people. Like pointed out in the video we now have things like Get Out or Atlanta and the media shit that came along with their massive success. So for the movie to think all white people want are the most 'real' and 'socially conscious' tales from the hood, does seem like it hasn't really been keeping up. Not to mention the book that it is based on was written in 2001 so there might be some carry over there that held back the satire from hitting the mark.
The movie does have a point but I think the intentional ambiguity and switching narrative realities at the end sort of gave people the impression that it was floundering, something I'd more chalk up to sloppy editing and pacing. Like the back half of the movie really has a problem with keeping the tension up between the main plot and the family drama.
Also way too damn the movie with faint praise by saying the 'the cinematography does it's job' not exactly thrilling stuff. Not that the movie tries to be but the video does have this slightly condescending tone where it is almost trying to imply that the other movies are only getting praise because their cinematography really draws attention to itself. Then bringing up Euphoria as if the other nominated movies don't also expertly use their cinematography and stylistic choices to tell their stories and enhance everything else in the theming and tone. At the end of the day the movie is pretty good and deserves all the credit, but it is simply ludicrous to say it should win best picture in a year where so many really great and boldly interesting movies came out. Sure it can be admired for being culturally and politically significant but that doesn't make it a more worthy piece of art on its own.

Agreed with you on most of this,
I will say I believe the point on the cinematography style was moreso being that it’s effective and powerful without needing necessarily be this extravagant look, while it does indulge itself in parts I think it all feels very motivated which to me matters more, however I can absolutely see the condescension in my tone (as I cut a ton of shit out) which is a bummer, hopefully that point wasn’t lost ultimately.
While yes I can agree that the message was speaking to an older generation of black media, I will say that type of content has been consistently pushed particularly through social media, which I wouldn’t say was brought up in the film but certainly alludes to that need for content.
And I will say if I had to personally choose Best Picture the most important film I’d say would be Zone of Interest for a million reasons I’m not quite qualified to articulate but yes I do agree that pitting films against each other, particularly ones with larger messages to communicate, is certainly counterintuitive to any greater dialogues on the subject matters, def wasn’t trying give that vibe, but if I did then that was not the intention. Just thought I’d glaze a great movie,
      Preciate you watching though!!

Watched the video. I liked it, but I can't get with you here completely, but maybe I can't experience the movie in it's totality. I'm not African American, so I don't have the cultural background. To me the movie was FUN and FUNNY; I openly cackled in the theater. I agree that the drama added to the satire in a symbiotic manner; to me the best scene to show that is when MC runs out of the restaurant looking stand off ish, because he is worried sick about his mother, while the movie producer saw it as him doing Big Bad BoiTM stuff. I'm queer, and honestly from that lense I enjoyed the movie, for it's tragedy when the son is dancing with the mother, and for its hillarity when the throupple is enjoying the wedding. In a way I connected to this movie because even if some Yte people and media have moved on from the conversation in the movie, I am not watching the movie as a reflection of historical events in 2024, I am watching it as a story that is plausible and does well in the narrative of the movie; to report on the status of Yte People's Biases in 2024 I follow multiple contemporaneous black creators; and I guess i liked that of the movie too, I didnt feel like it was teaching racism Bad, the movie felt like Theres Racism and Theres a Subset of Middle Class Black People living in a Racist World. If this movie was a manga, I would have felt it was a fictional slice of life, where some items are exaggerated because Plot and Manga, but overall it's about regular people existing. I also LOVED the scene of the MC being in the office talking with the characters, I know it's bunkers if it happened to a family member, but it was so much fun to watch it on the screen as an author interacting with his characters. And that joy of writing I think is what the ML saw in the book, and why she liked it, for the artistry of an author writing, not because it was a pandering book. I don't know if the movie is worth Academy recognition, but I do feel like it deserves a special place in pop culture similar to Forest Gump: a silly movie with some hard moments and it's there for the viewer to enjoy the experience. I almost loved that the end was bittersweet, with that final nod between the author and the actor; to me the movie said "we are all forced to live under capitalism and make do to make a living that fits our needs". I don't think the movie was revolutionary, instead it was a movie about satirizing the status quo. And that is fine with me, really. I would re-watch.
