One thing that's cut from the anime is how Paul "can't keep his promises." He'd vowed to not touch a woman until he saved Zenith. He failed in that and it's had a heavy toll on his mental wellbeing. The party had encountered a succubus on the way to Rapan and Paul is the party's principle damage dealer. Shierra (the robed woman) was too frightened to use detoxification on him, not to mention having a PTSD attack from her time at the bandit camp from seeing an aroused and violent Paul. Lilia gave herself to him to get him out of the status effect.

The culture quickly adapted to having warrior women among each traveling group, both to eliminate the attacking succubus, and to relieve the men of their status effect.

Great episode! As for the spells you can use in the cave, it is convenient to use ice. If you use land spells and distract yourself, instead of generating the earth with magic, you can accidentally use the earth's land, which could cause landslides.
The sub I watched said a party saw someone that resembled Zenith IN the labyrinth, not that she traveled INTO the labyrinth. We heard she was deep in the labyrinth before anyone went to rescue her after all. It’d be weird if she left and went back in.
Being this uncomfortable about the mere mention of sex makes the fact that they're planning to watch Monogatari hilarious. I can't wait to find out how far in they'll get before dropping it.

It was so much worse in the LN. She spends most of her time despairing in a small hole, having to decide if she'd rather stay and starve or make a run for it and probably die horribly.
The LN has her reflect on her life as she's trying to figure out her next step. The scene shown was her last attempt at breaking out, but the monsters had sussed her out and strategized to keep her trapped. She regretted what she'd told Jenius, she regretted not seeing her parents again. She would die alone and nothing would ever be found of her. Her rescue was an outright miracle.
5:45 Talhand checking out Rudy was an odd thing to add in here. Basically after the succubus incident Elinalise talks about how effective they are against men and if they dont have detox magic then they'd sometimes end up banging it out of their system as a result. Then she makes an offhand comment about how Talhand was immune to them and found their phermones offputting just like the women members did due to personal reasons. So basically implying he's gay, and I guess that was thrown in here too? Not sure if the LN was more direct on this but the WN just briefly mentioned this
i would have prefer they take more time with the reunion with paul, it's been forever since they seen each other. I would prefer more chat between father and son, also more conversation with Lilia. i felt this episode the most rushed ep yet
@@reignmansDirection isn't bad, they just have to make do with the limited amount of screen time they have. It's 3 volumes for 12 episodes, there's a lot that gets cut. In season 1 it was mostly travel so it wasn't a big issue (hell, they cut out a fairly important part from Millishion), here it was a much slower pace and focused on interpersonal relationships so you feel it more.

If someone follows you their 30 minutes would pass at the same time, just with the difference of enterig the circle, no? The time lag only applies if two individuals are traveling away from or towards each other and not if they travel with each other (even with slightly different entrance timings). Did anyone else notice a considerable drop in animation quality and overall direction in episode 20? It felt so jarring when I first watched it. It's full of these awkward close-ups that don't make sense and weird low detail static shots. It feels like the studio ran out of money and decided that this will be the one episode they will sacrifice in order to keep the quality high for the other episodes.
Personally I don’t like how young Rudy looks compared to the ln where it says he was the same height as Paul when they reunited which made it hit even more in my opinion

I was going to say the same thing. Most reactors don't remember or even pay attention to details like that because they are too busy "trying to be reactors" instead of just naturally enjoying a show. A natural reaction to something is much more enjoyable to watch than seeing someone purposefully overreacting, and that also almost always leads to more insightful discussions.
its a combination of reasons as to why elinalise is angry/hates paul. they were obviously having relationships. with her and ghislaine at the same time. paul to her was cliff before cliff. Paul basically founded their ragtag party "fangs of the black wolf" and brought everyone together, an adventurers group full of people that were either exiled or weirdos not accepted by others. the fangs of the black wolf became their home, their family. then paul met zenith. got her prego, retired as an adventurer and asked his family for money so him and zenith can buy a house and settle down. so basically not only she had special feelings for paul.... but the abandonment stung twice as hard, he left, their relationship was over, but also the group lost 2 very valuable family members and the party got disbanded.
Having read the Paul Gaiden's full transcript, I can give some insight: Paul recruited Elinalise into his party after him and Geese roped Talhand along and Paul adamantly refused to have a sausage fest party. She turned him into a mummy with the "recruitment interview." During their first outing together to conquer a labyrinth, they ran into Ghislaine and managed to convince her to join the party after defeating the labyrinth's boss (a Red-Hood Cobra), thus giving the party its famous name. Paul was friends-with-benefits with her throughout her stay, but she went for every man she came across while he went for every woman he came across. Ultimately he took advantage of Ghislaine's mating season and started sleeping with her on the regular as well. Then they met Zenith. Zenith reminded him of his late mother by appearance and personality, so he fell in love with her over the months they raised her to A-rank so she could join the party. When they went on the labyrinth dive that secured their S-rank status, they confessed their feelings. Not long after their promotion they had their night together. Yoko Ono situation came about. Paul tried to straighten up, stopped picking up women and sleeping with either Ghislaine or Elinalise. They both understood why and didn't raise a fuss. What they did raise a fuss about was Paul's nagging about everyone's shortcomings that went on for two whole months. During the meeting about it, Zenith passed out and they found out she was pregnant. Paul declared his intent to disband the party that very moment. Here's the grudge: Paul not only disbanded the party without consulting everyone, he distanced himself from the others, claiming he never needed them in the first place and can easily walk away from them and what they'd built together. And he told them he's taking the reward money for their latest job and keeping it. So that's what he went and did. Talhand and Elinalise had to be held down so they wouldn't outright attack him as he walked out with Zenith in tow. Some five months traveling later, Paul reached Roa and begged Philip to give him a job. About two months later Rudeus was born.
Nah, her relationship with him was purely sexual only. What Elinalise was really upset about is the events surrounding paul and zenith, getting her pregnant and disbanding the party and moving away leaving everyone to their own without consulting, just like that . Talhand, Geese, everyone else in the party was also upset about paul not just Elinalise. It's like they all have finally been given some place where they think is home, someplace they belong, each of them has their own dark backstory before being invited by Paul, especially Elinalise, then paul just destroyed it like that.

10:55 Elinalise was supposed to tell Paul about Sylphy being her granddaughter here, and Paul storms over to Rudeus asking why she's saying such insane things, until Rudeus confirms it 16:10 consider it ironic and the universe having a cruel sense of humor that after being teleported from the Fittoa Teleportation Incident that Zenith gets stuck in a labyrinth themed entirely around teleportation
If major plot points this important are cut, you can assume they've been adjusted for the adaptation. Either the story has been adjusted or it's been moved to a different scene. I would refrain from talking about this kind of cut content until the end of the season, since there's no way to know for sure.
The light novel covers the Roxy's month stuck in the labyrinth. Yes, she was eating dead monsters and drinking conjured water. She had a hiding place where the monsters couldn't get to her, but it was not only cramped but wouldn't help her escape. So after each rest, she'd venture out and try to find a way out of the section she was stuck in. But the monsters weren't entirely mindless either, and they started taking measures to block her in and trap her. What was in the anime was her last attempt. They had cut off her escape back to her hiding place and they stood between her and any teleportation circles she could possibly get to in order to try to get out of the labyrinth. By the way, in the light novel, Rudy smelled her. That's how the novel described it, and that's how Rudy knew to blast through walls to finally get to where she was trapped. It could have been some other sense or magic detection that came across as smell, but it was described as smell.
I'd buy maybe 2 weeks of that, 1 week would be a lot more believable. 1 month is just silly. I think the author made a mistake with the whole 1 month thing. If it was rudy with his abnormal mana capacity...maybe 1 month is believable.

I mean your day is basically : Exploring and fighting until your mana is like 10% -> Grab one or two corpses to eat --> Conjure water -> Sleep until you have full mana --> Repeat. I really hope next episode they go more into roxy's situation and her struggle to survive the month alone, In the novels it was almost an entire chapter and I feel like they just skipped over it.

as someone who read the LN, this episode was downgraded greatly. some scenes became bland and the suffering of Roxy wasn't shown. I understand that we only have atleast 4 episodes left but still....😢 still like the animations though
What i like in the LN was the explanation of their role that was sadly cut from the anime. Elinalise being the tank, Paul the secondary attacker. Talhand can be a magician or secondary atracker and Rudeus the main magician and also the healer

well the easiest answer as to why zenith would be partying up is that she needed money. she teleported into some crazy hard continent. its not like she can get on a bus. she'd have to get her bearings, make a bunch of money, and then book a journey home. look how little they made on the demon continent per mission. she would have to adventure quite a bit to get money together, plus she'd probably have to hire people as escorts too, which is even more money. shes a healer after all.
i dont think she ever was in any party, i mean when roxy meets kishirika she was trying to find zenith and couldnt pin point her... it was going underground which probly means she got teleported straight into the labyrinth
A thing to note is they kind of DO know Zenith is "somewhere" in the labyrinth. Some differences between the show and novel possibly due to translation for subtitles: Novel: was seen by adventurers in the labyrinth stuck in a stone Show: Went into the labyrinth with some adventurers RECAP, in S1 Finale, I believe, Roxy asked Kishirika Kishirisu where Rudy's family was, and she saw Zenith on the labyrinth city of Rapan.
Novel: Geese said he'd heard of some adventurers seeing a woman of her description within the labyrinth, but the party got wiped out a little while ago.

I agree I was kinda back and forth with the whole regret thing like yea he could miss the birth of his kid or at the very worst someone die like his parents or Sylphie in childbirth… but I feel it’s still somewhat of a net positive that he was able to save Roxy and if he hadn’t come when he did she would’ve for sure died and I think he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself had he never went in the first place

The time lag only applies if two individuals are traveling away from or towards each other and not if they travel with each other (even with slightly different entrance timings).

Did anyone else notice a considerable drop in animation quality and overall direction in episode 20? It felt so jarring when I first watched it. It's full of these awkward close-ups that don't make sense and weird low detail static shots. It feels like the studio ran out of money and decided that this will be the one episode they will sacrifice in order to keep the quality high for the other episodes.

in the LN arent they like the same height at that point and time? they've definitely made him shorter... i mean he is almost the same height as sylphy back home and sylphy is supposed to be pretty short (5'2-5'3) at this point rudy is supposed to be around 5'9 to 5'10

I'm pretty sure zenith WAS NOT IN A PARTY that went in that labyrinth. You can thank the crunchyroll subs for that one. It should have been "Zenith was SEEN by a party that went in there." If something doesn't add up in any anime you watch, it's usually a crunchyroll mistake.

I was going to say the same thing. Most reactors don't remember or even pay attention to details like that because they are too busy "trying to be reactors" instead of just naturally enjoying a show. A natural reaction to something is much more enjoyable to watch than seeing someone purposefully overreacting, and that also almost always leads to more insightful discussions.

they were obviously having relationships. with her and ghislaine at the same time.
paul to her was cliff before cliff.
Paul basically founded their ragtag party "fangs of the black wolf" and brought everyone together, an adventurers group full of people that were either exiled or weirdos not accepted by others. the fangs of the black wolf became their home, their family.
then paul met zenith. got her prego, retired as an adventurer and asked his family for money so him and zenith can buy a house and settle down.
so basically not only she had special feelings for paul.... but the abandonment stung twice as hard, he left, their relationship was over, but also the group lost 2 very valuable family members and the party got disbanded.
In what way would zenith fit the description of a weirdo outcast. She’s nobility.

Having read the Paul Gaiden's full transcript, I can give some insight:
Paul recruited Elinalise into his party after him and Geese roped Talhand along and Paul adamantly refused to have a sausage fest party. She turned him into a mummy with the "recruitment interview."
During their first outing together to conquer a labyrinth, they ran into Ghislaine and managed to convince her to join the party after defeating the labyrinth's boss (a Red-Hood Cobra), thus giving the party its famous name.
Paul was friends-with-benefits with her throughout her stay, but she went for every man she came across while he went for every woman he came across.
Ultimately he took advantage of Ghislaine's mating season and started sleeping with her on the regular as well.
Then they met Zenith.
Zenith reminded him of his late mother by appearance and personality, so he fell in love with her over the months they raised her to A-rank so she could join the party.
When they went on the labyrinth dive that secured their S-rank status, they confessed their feelings. Not long after their promotion they had their night together.
Yoko Ono situation came about. Paul tried to straighten up, stopped picking up women and sleeping with either Ghislaine or Elinalise. They both understood why and didn't raise a fuss. What they did raise a fuss about was Paul's nagging about everyone's shortcomings that went on for two whole months. During the meeting about it, Zenith passed out and they found out she was pregnant.
Paul declared his intent to disband the party that very moment.
Here's the grudge:
Paul not only disbanded the party without consulting everyone, he distanced himself from the others, claiming he never needed them in the first place and can easily walk away from them and what they'd built together. And he told them he's taking the reward money for their latest job and keeping it. So that's what he went and did. Talhand and Elinalise had to be held down so they wouldn't outright attack him as he walked out with Zenith in tow.
Some five months traveling later, Paul reached Roa and begged Philip to give him a job. About two months later Rudeus was born.
Nah, her relationship with him was purely sexual only. What Elinalise was really upset about is the events surrounding paul and zenith, getting her pregnant and disbanding the party and moving away leaving everyone to their own without consulting, just like that . Talhand, Geese, everyone else in the party was also upset about paul not just Elinalise. It's like they all have finally been given some place where they think is home, someplace they belong, each of them has their own dark backstory before being invited by Paul, especially Elinalise, then paul just destroyed it like that.

Makes one think whether she stumbled around and stepped on a trap herself.
If major plot points this important are cut, you can assume they've been adjusted for the adaptation. Either the story has been adjusted or it's been moved to a different scene. I would refrain from talking about this kind of cut content until the end of the season, since there's no way to know for sure.
The light novel covers the Roxy's month stuck in the labyrinth. Yes, she was eating dead monsters and drinking conjured water. She had a hiding place where the monsters couldn't get to her, but it was not only cramped but wouldn't help her escape. So after each rest, she'd venture out and try to find a way out of the section she was stuck in. But the monsters weren't entirely mindless either, and they started taking measures to block her in and trap her. What was in the anime was her last attempt. They had cut off her escape back to her hiding place and they stood between her and any teleportation circles she could possibly get to in order to try to get out of the labyrinth.
By the way, in the light novel, Rudy smelled her. That's how the novel described it, and that's how Rudy knew to blast through walls to finally get to where she was trapped. It could have been some other sense or magic detection that came across as smell, but it was described as smell.
I'd buy maybe 2 weeks of that, 1 week would be a lot more believable. 1 month is just silly. I think the author made a mistake with the whole 1 month thing. If it was rudy with his abnormal mana capacity...maybe 1 month is believable.
@@gil749 Your mana replenish over time so honestly even 1 year is possible. Horrible yes, impossible not really. I mean your day is basically :
Exploring and fighting until your mana is like 10% -> Grab one or two corpses to eat --> Conjure water -> Sleep until you have full mana --> Repeat. It's fricking miserable but yeah it's possible
@@gil749 Why would that be impossible tho, she had food n water, she had shelter, and it wasnt like she used up all her mana every time, she had rest. She could probably go on for way longer if the monster hadnt ambushed her. The only thing unbelievable is the timing of when Rudeus arrived n saved her, but it s all "fate" in this series.
Such a wholesome episode, it put a smile on face seeing everyone acknowledge Rudy's growth throughout the episode.
I really hope next episode they go more into roxy's situation and her struggle to survive the month alone, In the novels it was almost an entire chapter and I feel like they just skipped over it.

as someone who read the LN, this episode was downgraded greatly. some scenes became bland and the suffering of Roxy wasn't shown. I understand that we only have atleast 4 episodes left but still....😢 still like the animations though
What i like in the LN was the explanation of their role that was sadly cut from the anime. Elinalise being the tank, Paul the secondary attacker. Talhand can be a magician or secondary atracker and Rudeus the main magician and also the healer

well the easiest answer as to why zenith would be partying up is that she needed money. she teleported into some crazy hard continent. its not like she can get on a bus. she'd have to get her bearings, make a bunch of money, and then book a journey home. look how little they made on the demon continent per mission. she would have to adventure quite a bit to get money together, plus she'd probably have to hire people as escorts too, which is even more money. shes a healer after all.
i dont think she ever was in any party, i mean when roxy meets kishirika she was trying to find zenith and couldnt pin point her... it was going underground which probly means she got teleported straight into the labyrinth

Novel: was seen by adventurers in the labyrinth stuck in a stone
Show: Went into the labyrinth with some adventurers
RECAP, in S1 Finale, I believe, Roxy asked Kishirika Kishirisu where Rudy's family was, and she saw Zenith on the labyrinth city of Rapan.
Novel: Geese said he'd heard of some adventurers seeing a woman of her description within the labyrinth, but the party got wiped out a little while ago.
