  • Sweden and Finland have formalized their NATO applications. Despite previous combative rhetoric from the Kremlin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the Nordic countries joining the western military alliance would make no difference. However, Turkey has said it will block the move. Interview with Ian Bond, Director of Foreign Policy at the 'Centre for European Reform' think-tank in the UK.

A previous headline and a question in the video incorrectly suggest that Norway wants to join NATO. Norway has been a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. We apologize for the mistake.

Similar to Finland and Sweden, it would be great if Russia could apply and join NATO to maximize its southern security and thus bring complete peace in Europe and Asia:--

why not create a new defence alliance: ATON, TONA, ONAT or something- reuse the NATO documentation etc except the rules for joining.
Finland and Sweden applying to join wouldn't have even been discussed if Putin hadn't invaded Ukraine. There are some reasons not to rush this. However, Sweden, Finland and the UK have signed a mutual defence agreement on 11th May 2022 in case any of them are attacked. In practice that would mean the Joint Expeditionary Force, a coalition led by the UK with Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden,Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania and the Netherlands. It was set up in 2014 (when Russia invaded Ukraine, annexing Crimea) to provide a fast multi disciplinary response capability focussed on northern European defence with like minded countries as members. The last major exercise was at the end of March 2022. All of these countries now use NATO interoperability standards and procedures.
And some people might be surprised by how well armed Finland is, and the huge number of bunkers across the country.
Finland was invaded before by Stalin, and even before that had been annexed by the Russian Empire.
Also, some people forget that Finland is already part of the EU which includes the commitment that *" if an EU country is the victim of armed aggression on its territory, the other EU countries have an obligation to aid and assist it by all the means in their power, in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter."*
Being part of NATO means that there are more countries, it's not essential but it would be additional valuable insurance (Putin having already shown he will break into other people's houses, kill, and steal).

we simply as turkish people dont want to defend sweden when they continue to support our enemies its that simple every nation in nato should respect security concerns of eachother since its a defence pact not an economic one... and turkey has %100 working democracy (people elected him and the same people elected opponents of AKP in every single major city just a few years ago) only thing that turkey lacks is LIBERAL democracy and it can not be achieved without time+support from outside but all the western governments do is trying to replace democraticly elected leader with junta (they did it 2 times and tried it many times since turkey joined nato and started to progress its democracy and oh boy they done a lot of damage to our democracy)

Turkey has a genuine grievance, that we have no real way to know how valid it is but the question is 100% valid as it relates to national security
Sweden has always been a advocate for world peace, human rights, and a very valid interpretation of our general constitutions they couldn't turn the immigrants over to Turkey without violating their own interpretation of constitutional rights. Since neither are wrong and neither can fully concede, members should have looked for concessions we can make in Swedens place months ago so we could have resolved this before the application

And Turkey's geographical presence is as difficult as its political presence. Therefore, if a step is to be taken in this war game, it will be taken from Turkey. Since Turkish politicians are aware of this, they will use every opportunity to get what they want. Considering its military power, Turkey is an indispensable part of NATO. Yeah but the thing is, Finland's president called to every Nato leader and asked if they have any objections. Erdogan said that he has no problems with Finland. Now instantly as the application is put forward the blackmail begins

Erdogan didn't make these rules up. If theres gonna be a conflict because of Sweden and Finland joining, Turkey would be dragged into it automatically. So they should also have the right to deny them joining NATO if they see it provoking a possible unnecessary conflict. Also remeber this is Erdogan so theres always the possibility that if he says "no", what he might actually mean is "make me an offer"...

I agree that everyone has the right, but if he wants something he could have asked for it earlier and not make a huge deal of it :D There's enough chaos in the world media already.

Erdoğan's regime is facing inflation rate spiraled to near 70%. So, I don't think the obstacle for Sweden and Finland is caused by either of the applicants. Erdoğan has mismanaged Turkey's economy for decades, and is simply trying to survive. Kinda like Putin.

As Turks we know that Westerners can be either very ignorant or that they are simply pretending not to be aware of facts that are as clear as day. How exactly would Turkey benefit from Finland and Sweden's membership? Sweden has sent $376 million and arms to the enemy of Turkey, a NATO member. Finland sanctioned Turkey due to its operation against the YPG/PKK. NATO doesn't need Finland and Sweden, it's the other way around. Turkey has NATO's second-largest standing army and is centrally located in a strategically significant region, which makes it indispensable. Sweden and Finland's membership to NATO will only aggravate Russia even more and increases the risk of WW3. I don't want our soldiers to die for the protection of people who support our enemies, who are responsible for the deaths of 40.000 Turks. Let the PKK/YPG protect Sweden and Finland if Russia were to invade them.

This is a perfect example why unanimous consent is a very bad idea. It allows one nation to hold another nation for ransom for any reason. Good or bad. I really don't like Erdoğan. His human rights violations have put Turkey on my places to avoid list. That said, he's not wrong. Finland has racist organizations that have too much political power for my comfort. As do Turkey and the U.S.) However I believe that the real reason Erdoğan objects is sour grapes over trade sanctions and political ties with Putin. Members should be allowed to object and state why. If it's a good argument, others will back it. If not, it should be possible to overrule the objection.
