I’ve got a few Honorable Mentions:
• Frozen: Christophe Beck
A score showing Elsa’s magical powers and Anna’s quest for true love is enough to warm any frozen heart
• Ice Age: David Newman
A journey with Manny, Sid and Diego returning a baby to his family makes us want adventure the Ice Age ourselves
• The Nightmare Before Christmas: Danny Elfman
Not only did Elfman gave the singing voice to Jack Skellington, he also gave a excellent Halloween and Christmas score to both holiday towns
And
Epic: Danny Elfman
Epic maybe one of the most forgotten action animated flicks, but it’s score throughout the film is just as the title says Epic
Definetly "The lion king" by Hans Zimmer
The Nightmare Before Christmas, Danny Elfman
My favorite Disney film comes out on top again! 👏👏👏👏
The Loud House Movie: Christopher Lennertz
The fact that How to Train Your Dragon is only an honorable mention is…a choice.
Yeah I honestly think it's one of the best 👌
The word you want is travesty. 😝
It's definitely one of my favorite. I think its better than Shrek
EXACTLY like the sheer disrespect, I expected it to be top 5 at least
It is definitely my favorite movie of all time🐉🐉🐉🐉🐉🐉🐉
Shame on you for not making HTTYD number 1 The music made that trilogy FLAWLESS!
One of the best ever! Not just animation, but any soundtrack. There are essays written on how flawless it is.
No kung fu panda was the best trilogy
The scene where Toothless draws Hiccup and Hiccup walks around it and Hiccup does the hand touch on Toothless for the first time is *chefs kiss*
HTTYD is my second favourite after TLK. Both are worthy of number 1.
Yeah, why does it always have to be The Lion King or The Prince of Egypt?
Not that they're bad movies, they're just talked about too much.
Alan Menken and Hans Zimmer went hard for the scores to Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt and we're all very grateful. The Pocahontas score is so memorable to me even as a kid watching it, I just get chills especially in the ending scene. Add Stephen Schwartz to the mix of these two composers and you get MAGIC!
Let's just say that any animated movie that has Hans Zimmer in the composer (Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, The Lion King and many more) has the best score in animated movies. Just by the thumbnail alone, I knew Hans would be number one, this man can do no wrong 👍
Thomas Newman’s score for Finding Nemo is a noteworthy choice. The score makes you feel like you’re in the underwater world that is both beautiful and dangerous.
bit nowhere close to the score of how to train a dragon. come on! I was really quite disappointed with this list.
How is How to Train Your Dragon only an honorable mention???
The fandom is too quiet these days to mobilize unfortunately 😑 I even have the CD deluxe editions of the first two movies, and I met my husband through our love for these movies
Because Mrs. Mojo/Watchmojo have no rhyme or reason for the way they do their lists. I swear they just throw darts at a corkboard and use those results to make their lists.

How is Pixar's Up not on this list? The music brilliantly depicted the life-long love story of Ellie and Carl within minutes. Also, Hercules?!? You hear the trumpets at the beginning of "Go the Distance" and it give you chills. If you have been to Disney world, that some is a staple in the fireworks and just fills you with hope. Finally, Huchback of Notre Dame should also be on the list.
This honestly should be a top 20 since there are so many good ones. John Powell doing the How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack and Michael Giacchino for The Incredibles are among my favorites. Powell for httyd absolutely killed it. Forbidden Friendship will forever be one of the greatest scores in animated movies
While not as popular as some of these other movies, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron had an amazing score, and for a movie with a main character who DIDNT talk, the music was a nice compliment and did amazing with portraying his emotions through music and narration. It also had the amazing talent of Hans Zimmer and Bryan Adams.
Spirit stallion of the Cimarron is Hans Zimmer is his best work the playfulness of spirit and rain and the crescendo of Orchestra playing when Spirit does his leap across the cannon makes my heart 🥰
Love it so much.
yes! I was so disappointed not to see it on this list!
I was looking for this comment ^^
thanks for saying such wonderful things about this movie its the first one i ever saw!!!
Can't believe there's no love for Jerry Goldsmith's score for Mulan.
That haircut scene?
That avalanche scene?
His theme for the Huns?
It was so good it got an Oscar nomination too!
Can we talk about Spirit Stallion of the Cimmaron tho, every single song in that soundtrack is FLAWLESS
Beautiful heartwarming music
Hans Zimmer's score on The Lion King is truly fantastic! It can really show how much work he has put to make this movie a masterpiece. It also shows the emotion how we can feel during the scene of Mufasa's death. We get to feel the loss of a father just as how Hans Zimmer felt. Truly emotional!
How is HTTYD only an honorable mention?
It's often cited as one of the best written movie scores of all time!
IT IS A COMPLETE AN UTTER *CRIME* YOU DIDNT INCLUDE THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME'S SOUNDTRACK ON THIS LIST. To this day, it still gives me goosebumps!
My favorite composers are Michael Giacchino, The Newman Cousins, Alan Menkin, John Powell, Hans Zimmer, John Williams and Danny Elfman
I'm a huge fan of Hans Zimmer, love his work. Just love how talented he is when it comes to music.
I love Joe Hisashi, soundtracks, how beautiful they are from most of the Ghibli films directed by Hayao Miyazaki like the Wind Rise, Spirited away, Princess Mononoke and more.
One of the greatest musical scores for an animated movie are in my opinion are The Land Before Time from the late James Horner, Inside Out from Michael Giacchino and the underrated Batman: Mask of the Phantasm from Shirley Walker. They're epic, emotional and were robbed for an Academy Award. Truly beautiful and worth hearing.
I'm so happy that *BRAVE* made the list, it's such a beautiful score! I listen to it daily as a way of relaxing, and just to cheer me up when I'm sad. For me it's just one of those score's that you listen to and you play the film in your head as its playing.
The hunchback of Notre Dame deserve to be at least in the special mentions
Ahh, I was praying that HTTYD would be number one. John Powell created multiple masterpieces.
I never thought I would say this but Hans Zimmer always does an amazing job in composing music scores in both Live Action and Animated films. That's pretty awesome, good job Hans!
Anything composed by Alan Menken is amazing!!
Agree with the Lion King. The soundtrack was a big part for me when growing up, I remember I had it on cassette tape. "Under the Stars" is probably my favorite. Alan Menken is brilliant as well.
Alan Meknen's score for the hunchback of Notre Dame is my favorite. It's thrilling listening to church piano inside the soundtrack.
Imagine making an animated movie and have Hans Zimmer, Sir Elton John and Tim Rice to make the music. That's the beauty of The Lion King
The Lion King is known as the best animated movie of Disney and the score is one of the reasons
The Lion King 1994 is and always shall be THE BEST!
@@chasehedges6775 1994
@@SpacialRend7 Sorry
@@chasehedges6775 You’re good.
I'd add, at least as an honorable mention, The Little Mermaid. The music put you there, and I would argue neither Beauty and the Beast nor The Lion King would have happened without it.
Hans Zimmer Lion King is a masterpiece and I love every musical score that in it. The movie wouldn’t have been the same without Hans Zimmer composing for the movie
Thank you for putting The Prince of Egypt on this list, I love its music! Wish The Book of Life and Coco made the top 10, though.
httyd should be way higher than just a notable mention. I mean let's be honest
I feel like James Newton Howard’s various Disney animated scores deserve a mention: Atlantis (“The Submarine”), Treasure Planet (“Silver Comforts Jim”) and Raya and the Last Dragon (“Running on Raindrops”) all stand as some of his best work.
And How to Train Your Dragon deserved far more than an honorable mention. It’s easily one of the best musical scores ever written.
Why wasn't the Spirit: Stallion of The Cimmaron sountrack included?
How did Dinosaur's score not make this list. That's one of my favorite James Newton Howard Scores
Hans Zimmer is one of my favorite film composers while everyone likes "The Lion King" but to me I always LOVED "The Prince Of Egypt" as his greatest scores soundtrack.
Hans Zimmer is my favorite music composer in animated films! His take on a great many of his contributions are nothing short of grand and epic proportions. The greatest example is The Lion King with its African influence and engaging musical segments.
I would have been very upset if Hisaishi wasn't on the list. His music is always so haunting and stays with you long after the credits roll. My favorites are actually "Princess Mononoke" and "Castle in the Sky." The first movie that made me want to buy the soundtrack because of the score, though, was "Mulan." I just love its music. Jerry Goldsmith did it very well.
Speaking of game-changer, Don Bluth's animated film The Secret of N.I.M.H. is also one because it was the first animated film scored by Jerry Goldsmith. And he was the first composer to score an animation as if it were a live action film, that is to say, to eschew the Mickey Mousing that had traditionally accompanied these things and rely instead on giving the picture a real dramatic core. The approach was, of course, brilliant, and that's the way that most animated films are being scored to this day.
Not even an honorable mention for The Hunchback or Notredame! Absurd!!! The best animated score in my oppinion.
Po, a cartoon bear who makes people laugh and cry, but mostly laugh and amazed.
This should have been a top 20, since you left many other scores (Up, Soul, Howl's Moving Castle...)
As much as I do agree with the list, these are my top 10
Chicken Run from Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell
The Incredibles from Michael Giacchino
Finding Nemo from Thomas Newman (though Wall-E is close)
The Prince of Egypt from Hans Zimmer
An American Tale from James Horner
Coralline from Bruno Coulais
Corpse Bride from Danny Elfman
Up from Michael Giacchino
Star Chaser from Andrew Belling
Spider-Man into the Spiderverse from Daniel Pemberton
I know some are stop and claymation but I still count them as a form of animation.
How is How to Train Your Dragon is in Honorable mentions only??? I know it's a tough competition with Lion King (no. 1 totally deserved) but he should be in first three - I always get teary eyed when I listen to the Forbidden Friendship track.
And Ratatouille should be in the list - you can literally hear Paris in the score.
I adore Zimmer's score in Kung Fu Panda, Giacchino' Incredibles, and songs from Road to El Dorado - Elton John rocks!
I absolutely LOVE the music in Spirited Away.
I think Madagascar 3 deserves atleast an honourable mention. The way Hans Zimmer made Dubois theme song was just so scary, it's like the villain is absolutely a death threat for the characters and for the audience. Also I know this isn't part of the composing work but it's still a music anyway, Frances McDormand's singing in that movie was absolutely perfect. Till this day I still can't believe that a movie like Madagascar can get a high class composer like Hans Zimmer to make it
💯💯
Madagascar 3 was 🔥
The Lion King wouldn’t be this amazing if it wasn’t for Hans Zimmer, Sir Elton John, and Tim Rice.
Don’t forget the beautiful animation and voice work from the cast
@@chasehedges6775 And the powerful coming of age story.
I find the lack of Mulan disturbing. That score was EPIC. Also Treasure Planet, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Atlantis, all three of the Cartoon Saloon movies - hell, you should make a Top 20 list and then some.
Quite disappointed that you haven't listed How to Train Your Dragon on the list, they are amazing and beautiful it makes me cry just hearing the soundtracks.
James Newton Howard when he orchestrated Disney’s Dinosaur (whether or not it’s animated): The Egg Travels is an emotional track and somewhat brings a tear to one’s eye. Atlantis: The Lost Empire is another good example. The Crystal Chamber is my favorite one: when Princess Kida walks towards the crystal, the music in the background is uplifting, dramatic and majestic with a heavy choir. James Newton Howard is one of the greatest movie composers of all time, second to Hans Zimmer. There’re those composers out their who make themes so majestic it would make the listener cry (for joy or sadness).
I just made a comment about Dinosaur!! Stand Together, The Egg Travels. And Yes!! That Crystal Chamber score from Atlantis though
Flawless film scores missing from this list:
- Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas by Harry Gregson-Williams
- Atlantis: The Lost Empire by James Newton Howard
- The Nightmare Before Christmas by Danny Elfman
- The Land Before Time by James Horner
- Beauty & the Beast by Alan Menken (if Zimmer can have multiple entries on this list, why Menken can't?)
- Although How to Train Your Dragon by Powell recieved an 'Honorable mention', it is amongst the best
Finding Nemo and Ratatouille are masterclasses in emotion, just wonderful pieces. Love this list.
The first movie my son saw in a theater was How to Train Your Dragon. It's perfect! Funny, moving, inspiring, and the music still can make my heart ache, bring me to tears, and give me goosebumps. My son, who is now 16 years old, said someone had to be soulless to not include the score from How to Train Your Dragon in the top five. Personally, I think you need to reconsider...for the sake of your soul. Thank you.
Also James Horner's efforts for the Don Bluth animated films should also deserve some mention:
The Land Before Time
An American Tail
An American Tail 2: Fievel Goes West
Between Lion King, Finding Nemo & Beauty & the Beast, they all have the best scores of the whole animation industry.
My top scores for sure are Lion King, Beauty & The Beast and Spirited Away... just hearing the music transports me into those movies. Spirited Away in particular is the immersive experience it is in a large part thanks to the score
Anybody else shocked that How to Train Your Dragon didn't even make the actual list?
I love film scores they’re really amazing I went and saw spirited away with my boyfriend yesterday and the score to it is really awesome. Joe hishishi work on that is super intense I love his work that he did on other films that I’ve watched like Ponyo and my neighbor Totoro my favorite film score would have to be the lion King honestly I went for my phase of listening to the soundtrack to that and also like in the movie and I still love that movie today you guys should talk about top 10 video game Composer‘s on your next list which would be really cool
I adore the soundtrack from "Tangled" and I feel like it is ignored! The music is breathtaking and emotional and just beautiful. I agree with others that "Up" and "In and Out" should be on this list, and that "How to Train Your Dragon" definitely should have been more than an honorable mention. Thank you, though, for such a great list! There are a few that I'm not as familiar with and would like to explore more.
I meant "Inside Out"
Dan Romer with the Luca score is super underrated. Take me gravity gets me motivated.
I agree so much! And Telescope is wonderful too!
YOOOO EYYYYY TOH FAN HEY MAN😊

When will you do Top 21 best animated movie villains of each year (2000-2021)?
Hans Zimmer is definitely one of the best. My fav (which I was hoping to see/hear) is the score from Kung Fu Panda 2 during the fight with Shen.
Lion king and the Prince of Egypt, you can't get better than that. P.S I'm glad you mentioned How To Train Your Dragon. That music is EPIC.
The Lion King is great, don't get me wrong, but HTTYD and The Prince of Egypt just make me feel so many emotions 🥲 True masterpieces.
Top 3 (In my opinion):
1. Finding Nemo
2. Kung Fu Panda
3. The Lion King
According to how long it took me to comment, this was the toughest choice EVER! I had six movies to choose because their music so God damn good, it was so difficult to decide, and I apologize for the long wait. This is where I finally made my choice, both Finding Nemo and Kung Fu Panda are the best scores I've ever heard but the reason I put Finding Nemo at the top spot was it was so calm and relaxing, the smooth music was so powerful, I loved it better than the Chinese music in Kung Fu Panda, even though their music was unbelievably outstanding. I would say the music is best used with violins, flutes and of course pianos. The lion King also was worthy enough to take the last spot because it so catchy and amazing with its African music, it is definitely worth listening to over and over again, however, the reason I lower it down on this list, and that goes with other movies on this list, was because some music was used in songs, I am judging this based on their musical soundtrack or background. And there you have it, and like it was so difficult, it messed up my mind. Can you guys figure out what other movies I had in my mind? I'll give a hint: it has a connection with one or more of these movies on my list. Let me know. :)
It is an absolute crime that How to Train Your Dragon is an HONORABLE MENTION. That is one of my favorite movie scores of all time. This list is filled with some amazing composers, most of which are my favorite, but the fact that HTTYD didn't even MAKE the list...
I am upset.
The music scores in these animated films are all absolute masterpiece! the composers are just genius!!!
I know its very classic orchestral arrangement but James horners land before time score is amazing and deserves at least a top 20 spot.
HANS ZIMMER IS A KING AND WE ALL KNOW IT... such a treasure. I am proud to say he was my 1st concert experience ever in Sydney 2019!
Love these! Do a top 10 Thomas Newman's scores!
I did not just see How to Train Your Dragon in HONOURABLE MENTIONS
I was hoping to see Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron on here. At least an honorable mention
No love for AKIRA? Come on, that soundtrack was easily one of the best of any movie!
How To Train Your Dragon ONLY AN HONORABLE MENTION!? Should have been at least #2
WatchMojo Top 10 Best Voice Celebrity score video on the top and this MsMojo video below it proves it I'm a big fan lol.
Pocahontas being on this list is an actual insult, and leaving hunchback and how to train your dragon 1,2, and 3 off is just plain wrong.
There is nothing wrong with Pocahontas’ score. Your comment is an actual insult. You’re just upset because Hunchback of Notre Dame’s score didn’t make the list.
The fact that neither Up nor Inside Out made the list is a crime. I get that only ten spots are available, but they’re some of the most emotional and powerful scores in any animated movie and deserved at the very least an honorable mention
Hunchback of Notre Dame. It didn't win any awards, and that's criminal because, in my opinion, that score is one of the best that Disney has ever come out with. Considering that it's on my list of Maybe 4 movies that I don't really care for from Disney, that really probably should say a lot.
I also think that How to Train Your Dragon should be higher on the list because that score really moved me.
SPIRIT- Im Free
Very very great epic list I like it a lot very great job mis mojo one of my absolute favorite list ever 💗
That’s amazing!
One of my favourites is the score and soundtrack of Wolf Walkers. Great movie and great music.

6. Tangled
7. Frozen
8. Frozen 2
9. Prince of Egypt
10. Joseph King of Dreams
Oh, and I forgot to mention, that I ADORE the music from Wall-e. Thomas Newman is a genius! Definitely would be in my top 10.
It’s a CRIME that How to Train Your Dragon is only an honorable mention
I would like to go 5 minutes, just once, talking about Pocahontas without bringing up its historical inaccuracies. It's gotten too much hate for it.
Ik no one would talk about it ,buy the tales of princess kaguya has the best score of any animated movie,it is so beautiful mesmerizing and captivating.
It brings so many emotions:sadeness ,happiness...
It just feels like LIFE .that's its beauty
Sooo animated movies have good music.
Not me crying through this whole video, including the honorable mentions 😶 all of these scores are number one for their own reason
I'm so glad Kung Fu Panda is on here, I love the music in that trilogy! It's so underrated! How is How To Train Your Dragon, not on this list!? I thought it would be number 1! It's a lot better than Pocahontas!
The Angry Birds movie 2 soundtrack is pretty awesome, in my opinion. Especially tracks like Submarine and Up to Speed.
how can you not nominate UP!!!!
that movies music is sooooo sooooooo soothing!!!!
my list:
10. Finding Nemo (2003) by Thomas Newman
9. Ratatouille (2007) by Michael Giacchino

1. The Lion King (1994) by Hans Zimmer
What about the music in Howl's Moving Castle (2004)?
So many good movies
The Nightmare Before Christmas - Danny Elfman
How to train your dragon is only an honorable mention, one dislike coming up
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, SHREK, KUNG FU PANDA, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT AND THE LION KING are my favourite ones. Including EPIC.
was this top for me? cause i saw that " Lion king" was at #1 and that's one of my three favorite disney movies of all time! anywho, happy wednesday Ms Mojo, and take care, God bless you and i hope to see you soon for more tops like this one, greetings from Colombia.
I feel like Inside Out should have made the list, The music in that movie really adds so much Emotion (pun intended) to the movie and it’s very pretty music! Good list though ^^
This could've been and should've been a top 15 with the honorable mentions that were in here.
