I recently started doing wood work projects and I love how stains and BLO really accentuate the wood grains. Currently working on a mirror frame and this video gave some good tips on blending. I love the way this project you did, turned out. Its gorgeous!

I now know my mistakes
1. wiping back too hard.
2. didn't know I could build color.
3. trying to wipe off in straight lines.

Great Video! I've watched quite a few of yours now - really well done. I have a dining table I'm looking to do, but it is mahogany. Would the red tone in the mahogany bleed through? Have you ever used these products on mahogany? I've used FMP and SFO before, but never on this big a project. Thanks!
I am sorry I never saw this comment until just now. 😬 yes I have and it can tend to have a pink undertone, the more you layer the more you will get rid of that. It didn’t bleed, but the tone of the mahogany did come through the first few coats. Once I layered up more coats I was able to conceal that.

Traci Ramirez hi Traci - it’s perfect for a kitchen table - it’s a stain and top coat combo - it has exceptional durability. If you want to increase sheen you can use the natural color over it. It has excellent resistance to abrasions and can be washed over and over once cured. Thank you so much for watching 😀
I have about a 5 to 6 foot long dresser top. Any suggestions on how to keep a straight line for that long.

Thank you! Oh yes you sure can, you will want to invest in a mister/water bottle that will help your blending efforts incredibly!

Hi, I’m planning on doing this exact finish on my dining room table. I’ve already purchased and used Raw Silk on another project, and found it to be a perfect match with my kitchen cabinets. Can you recommend the grey and black colours that you think would go well with Raw Silk?
So raw silk is a warm white so if you want to do greys in the top stick with a warm grey - if your doing stain use fusion SFO in driftwood with ebony
Would this technique work on knotty pine? Not sure what type of wood is in the video. I’m doing a desk top and I don’t want that yellow hue from the pine to bleed through
It works on any wood, some will just take more coats to get the coverage and look you want. Pine is more porous and takes stain really well. I have done this on pine and it comes out great.

I love the look. I just purchased all three colors but in a different brand. What would you suggest I use for a sealant for a stair tread.
Ms. C so this particular brand has a topcoat built in and is extremely tough. If you went with a different brand that does not, I would stick with a water based topcoat as an oil based will yellow or amber the lighter color stains.

I would like to do this treatment with these exact colors on a sanded down to bare oak. I am worried about the yellow/orange coming through. Do you ever apply a green wash to tone down the orange on wood before either white-washing, staining or painting. Ie: I also want to do a Algonquin wash over oak and fear the orange coming through.
I have and I have also used a clear shellac to prevent tannin bleed - works well

Since this product can be used on a painted surface I'm going to try this on a not glossy laminate ikea desktop. Do you think this would work? It's laminate with wood grain, orange color "wood". I've been looking for a way to update it but did not want to paint it and topcoat it-- too much work. This seems a bit more easy.
This isn't a hard look to achieve, it just takes practice. I wouldn't say its any easer or harder than painting and top coating. I haven't ever done this on a laminate, the concern is that your putting an oil based product on top of a laminate and it the product is just going t sit on top of the laminate, unlike wood, it penetrates the grain. My concern would be dry time it may take a lot longer and the adhesion could be an issue, not sure if it wouldn't just scratch right off. Again, I don't do it this way, but I know people do paint a base coat or you can prime your piece so the product has something to grab and hold on to and then apply the SFO.

Good afternoon. I stained a table i bought weathered great before w=I watched any videos and the table top is blotchy now. Ive been looking into how to make it looke more weathers and I also want to add some aqua to it. So how can i fix this without sanding down the top again?
For the best results - sanding to bare wood when you have an existing finish that is failing. Using the stains I did in the video give the piece a more polished look. If you want a weathered look try you hand at dry brushing paint and you can add your turquoise color too

How long to really cure for a kitchen table? Gorgeous!!
So the Stain and Finishing Oil has a 10 day cure time! I always tell my clients to use with caution the first little bit!
You say you usually do two coats, after doing such a beautiful blend, do you use natural SFO or blend again? Thanks
I do two coats of each color, repeating the blend. You can top off with the Natural if you want added sheen or more protection - keep in mind it can yellow the white though. This product is enough on its own though - the finishing oil is the top coat and once cured dries super hard
I want to do this in warmer tones. Any suggestions that will go well together?
Yes, you could use cappuccino and white, blended these would create a warm look.
can i use these colors with blending on solid cherry wood? or will the reddish color come though
You can,, I have used on cheery and mahogany - I would suggest using a clear shellac after sanding and the applying the stains
Paula - You have commented before and unfortunately you must not have the comments enabled on your channel and it will not let me reply to you! I hope that you see this. You can try with Dixie Belle, however it is not the same type of formula and gel stain is a bit thicker. The key to using the Fusion SFO is the open time it has which sets it apart from many other stains. This 10 minute open time allows you to work and blend the stain much easier. You could give it a try with the Dixie Belle Gel stain, but I would suggest a test or sample board first.
Would u put a clear top coat if u wanted a more durable finish?
This is durable enough on its own, it has a built in topcoat, but yes you add one if you like!
Do u do second coat just as first with the colours.
Yes you can, it all depends on the look you want, I have done many pieces with just one round and many that I wanted more coverage on and just repeated the process with 2 coats
Would you work the same way with oil based gel stain? And how would you brush on a vertical 6 feet long in one stroke?
So this stain has an open time of 10 minutes (much longer than most other oil based stains) typical is 2-3 minutes - making it much harder to blend like I did here with this and water based dries even faster. So I would say no, getting this look with a gel stain is going to be more difficult to blend.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique thank you for replying! So even though gel oil stains take up to 48hrs to dry they are not workable after 2-3 minutes? I did a test on a very small piece (before I saw your video just to see both colors) one side with gray the other with black and wiped it to a thin coat. I touched it 18hrs later and it was still slippery once on my fingers. This is in a dry electric baseboard heated room. Maybe because it is made with natural oils and doesn't smell. It's SamaN gel stain.
@@JazzyScat of course. that’s correct, dry time has nothing to do with the open time (workable time) a product has. I’m not sure what product your working with, but it should be dry to the touch before 18 hours, most stains are dry to touch within 12-24 hours depending on climate. I used to use gel stain years ago often and never had that happen 18 hours later.
Can this process be used on mfg wood that has been buffed first?
I can be used over bare wood or previously painted surfaces. I have another video that shows how I use over a painted surface.
Hello. After watching your tutorial, I’ve decided to use this technique on my kitchen table. I love the way it looks! My first problem (and it’s a pretty big one, lol!) is that I have already prepped my table but I can’t find Fusion near me in NJ. Is there another brand that I could use to do the same technique? I was leaning towards this brand because I like the fact that it doesn’t need a top coat. I have a fear of the whole “yellowing” that might occur. My plan is to paint the whole table with a lighter gray and do the blending on the table too in the same stain colors you used (gray, ebony and white). If I have to order online, it’s difficult to know what color gray to chose for the table that’ll look good with this color comb for the blended top. Do you have any suggestions on what shade I should order in Fusion or in another brand that might be more accessible to me?
So I don’t know of another brand that is as durable (this was made for floors and is extremely durable once cured) as well as the open time (most stains are 1-2 minutes) which makes it hard to blend. I just haven’t used other brands to create this exact look so I’m sorry I can’t recommend another brand. So in my experience with this looks it looks best paired with ash, coal black, white, sterling, soapstone. Staying simple with the paint color in the same tone is key.

Can you do this blended look on hard wood floors?
Yes you sure can - this is an incredibly durable product - but expensive I would imagine for very large areas
Would this be good stuff to refinish a table top? Would it stand high traffic use?
Absolutely. That primarily what I do this look on. This product is extremely durable - it was originally made for flooring.

can i use this on mdf shelves?
So this needs something to grab on to, I would suggest painting first and then doing this over the painted mdf surface. I have a video on here showing me using this stain over paint.
Isn’t the paint ( the white that you use) water-based? Is the SFO also water-based? I’m confused because I thought the SFO was oil-based.
It is and you can absolutely use oil based products over water based products - you want to paint - let it completely dry and then do in with your stain - no issues at all

It doesn’t have to be but for best result I always do. I like to see the natural wood grain. With stains being sheer you will see what’s underneath

You can certain wood species can bleed so after sanding I would clear shellac them to avoid thst then stain

Would you use this material and technique on hand rail and nosing?
You could, my opinion it’s looks better on a large flat surface to really see the blended look. On something like a railing I’m not sure you would see the effect as well for all the work and product required

@@Remeiko There are a number of grey stains that would work nicely, they won't give you the effect that using 3 colors blended will - but general finishes has a water based stain called graystone, varatehne has weathered gray, aged barrel and many more. Hope that helps

@@Remeiko I’m a big fan of General Finishes and Varathane. Varathane one hour stain is more of an economical choice but still a great product, I use all the time. General Finishes oil and water based stains both great, a little more $, but worth it. It boils down to color selection and cost. I use both of these brands regularly
Does that product work over a veneer as well as raw wood?
Yes, clean and scuff sand, or you can sand veneer to bare wood as well, just be cautious not to burn through. when not working with bare wood, it can take longer to dry as it’s not penetrating the wood but I have done it many times no problem.

What are the downsides to doing this over paint? Will it come out this way?
Sarah Miller I don’t normally do it that way, I have tried once and didn’t like it as much. People do it all the time and have success with it and only do it that way. I just prefer to sand to bare wood for the most flawless finish. It has never chipped or flaked she place on bare wood, but I have heard differently when placed over paint.
I use the SFO over paint and have never had a problem with chipping or flaking
Sarah Miller you know I have done it once over paint and just didn’t care for it as much. It came out fine. Took longer to dry (which is what I hear a lot of people saying - stays tacky so long). I just prefer to sand to bare wood and get a fresh crisp look. Works for me best and never a chance to chip or flake over the painted surface.
Glenda C I am glad to hear, I belong to a lot of paint forums and have heard this happening before, not every time or anything but have read some experiences with that happening. The biggest thing I have heard is the tacky feeling for days, as if it’s not drying or curing the same.
Can you do this with minwax oil stain ?
@@MarianneCarlson-vg1tn you could try - I have never had any luck with that - the open time is 2 min as opposed to this formula that has a 10 min open time - which allow blending much nicer

@@BorninaBarnBoutique ok but I did staircase afternoon so I brush it just grey and it's not cover with brown lines. So I use sealers one coat. But then just saw your video was nice. If I remove the sealers. And how will I make a grey mix with white? Should I leave the grey and put the white on and wipe out 5min ? Will it looks beautiful?
@@georgem3188 it really hard to say without seeing it and knowing the products used. I would let dry what you have applied and then scuff sand and use the products I used here in the video

You did not state what type of wood it was. In addition, when you are demonstrating what the stain result will look like, it needs to be done on bare wood, not a previously washed stain that was sanded. How are we to tell what it will look like if we don't know which type of wood you are using or we don't have the actual natural color of the bare wood that was sanded.
Ok first - this is just a sample board I had laying around my shop and it’s not relevant the type of wood it actually is (it was pine). This can be applied on any type of wood using this technique and it comes out the same (certain woods may require more coats) but you don’t have to have the same type of wood I am working on here - I have done this look on many many different wood species. Second, as I mentioned I used a wash but sanded it off. Lastly, this product and technique does not have to be sanded to bare wood to be used to achieve this look or other looks as well. If you asked me to show pictures of all the times I have done this on different wood species or over a painted surface - you would not be able to see any difference.
