    It’s always annoying when they make the protagonist stupidly OP yet still a damsel in distress somehow. Like, at least have some consistency guys.

    • @urgon6321
      @urgon6321 3 місяці тому +11

      We're not allowed to have real damsels in distress, because it's sexist. So one of the valid workarounds is to make damsel into Mary Sue, and then distress her a little. Not too much, or else it would be BDSM fantasy, and who needs that. Adding a few swears to add tension. So your protagonist can say something like this:
      "I am the goddess of this world! I have the power of life and death, and a power of baking the best chocolate chip cookies in the Universe! Oh no, my hair is distressed! Curses!".

      She has to be physically capable because that's cool and edgy, but at the same time, we can't subvert conventional gender roles too much or it won't work for the heteronormative romantic pairing we're going to force her into 😉

    • @urgon6321
      @urgon6321 3 місяці тому +6

      @@Butterfly-ql4pg, in other words she must be strong, but not too strong, otherwise she would have to move the damn couch herself. On the other hand if this is proper Mary Sue story, there will be two love interests, one of them mysterious and brooding, while the other one will be self-sacrificing couch mover. In the end she could be as strong as the author likes - she will need her powers only when rule of cool applies...

    with all the Hunger Games ripoff novels out there, if they wanna be bad stories so badly, they could atleast give the characters overly complex anime powers or something. like, if the story and characters suck, atleast make the fights sick, lol. like "I fight with a club, but on every 7th hit, my 'lucky seven' activates, causing a critical strike!' or something. (also please dear god as you said, make there be a threat of death if the stakes of the story are 'win' or 'lose' after a kidnapping)

      @@x-xPhobia anime takes itself seriously while having fun, creative powers, so i'm sure novels can do it too. afterall, LOTR takes itself seriously with dragons and weird frog gremlins with a drug addiction for jewellery. what i'm trying to say is, imo, all fiction could stand to embrace the fact that it's fiction a bit more; it'll still be an enjoyable story.

    Only a few things I have to say is 1. This new format was hilarious and I loved it because you're not actually dead. Now for a reply and a rewrite suggestion to help anyone trying to write this kind of story. I hope this is useful.
    2. If Loom trained her whole life to fight monsters it would make sense to lose against other people or struggle more against them. If she's cripplingly afraid of the beasts that's kind of hilarious. I imagine she knows how to kill them from simulated combat, but hesitates against the real thing. Not completely frozen because then she would never kill any of them alone. This hesitation would also explain her needing someone else to give them their beast corpses to win. It's weird she wins in the end though and that she's fighting for her freedom like the right to leave the city and no one follows her, but that's fine if she ran away her dad would try to find her. If he's the absolute rule follower type of villain might not try to find her though if she leaves legally. He only tortures her when he thinks she's doing something illegal implying he believes in following the law and harsh punishments for even suspected law breakers. An extremely harsh authoritarian.
    Re write suggestion if it's meant to be a 2 book thing
    What if she entered the trials to face the beasts in a less risky situation? By letting go of her fear Loom can then run away into a world filled with them, now fearless and highly trained. If anyone comes after her they'll need to fight her way through the beasts. Maybe she enters the trials under the guise of I want to impress my Dad. Maybe the trial's reward is a trophy, status, bragging rights, and money. If the last trial is to kill the most beasts and she would have lost without help that also makes sense in the rewrite. Loom looses the trials, but overcomes her fears and can now run away. She disappoints/lets down the old man, but it doesn't matter she's overcome her mental block and can now escape from him. Maybe she meets a boy her age from a poorer family and gives him the beast corpses so he wins the trials instead.
    She gets a character arc of I need to overcome my fear to escape my abusive father, I have met people who have it way worse, I helped someone, now I will run away.
    Book 2 she is on the run from her father trying to hunt her down. Maybe he wastes so many soldiers going after her that his army rebels and he's replaced. Loom indirectly starts a revolution by making her Dad an obsessed paranoid dictator chasing a pointless objective and getting his soldiers killed. Or so many leave to chase her that an uprising is successful.
    If it's a stand alone just throw in the option to leave the city anytime you want for as long as you want into the reward pile.

A better way to write this would be to have to character be aware of this and find smarter ways to kill her opponents. Like using a gun or to a lesse extent a bow. I do agree that our OP main character needing to be saved every 5 pages is a bore.
